Thoughts on the Additional FP+s

Disney announced yesterday that you can now obtain more FPs after using your original three.

The additional FPs must come from a kiosk.

1. Many have complained that waiting in line at a kiosk is backwards and that we should be allowed to get new FPs from their iPhones. => I don't think you'll ever be able get to additional FPs from your iPhone, simply because that is a disadvantage to those who don't own an iPhone. Perhaps it'll be offered as a perk for on-site guests, but I doubt it. Then it would be a disadvantage to onsite guests who don't own a smartphone.

2. This is huge. You can now get a FP for another park, hop to the park, and have a ride waiting for you! This will change how people hop parks, and it makes park hopping a much greater value.

3. Many have complained that waiting in line at a kiosk is no better that the old FP system. => No way. The kiosks are all over the parks. Rather than having to walk across the park to the ride itself, you'll be able to get a FP from a location near you.

4. Many have wondered about FPs for Illuminations or other night time entertainment => for now, those viewing locations will be easier to get for people who are real big fans of that entertainment. If you don't really care about preferred viewing for Illuminations, don't make it one of your first 3 FPs. That makes it easier for people like me who really like Illuminations to get preferred viewing.

5. This should help with the FP return line length. Prior to this, people scheduled their FPs for later in the day (and the FP spots got bunched up). Now guests have an incentive to take some of the early FP slots.

6. I wonder how this will affect the Brazillian groups?

I wish it worked this way but sadly it will not. In order to get an additional FP for a park you have to be at that park. If you are in MK and want to hop to Epcot after using your 3 FP at the MK you have to hop then get on a kiosk at Epcot to book your 4th.

I, for one, think this is a start, but it still is very lacking. Sure, you can wait on line at a kiosk to get - what? All of the big attractions will be taken for that park that day. There is no way you can get an afternoon Toy Story Mania, or a Princess meet and greet. True, it is no different than if you physically visited the park and got FP the old way, but FP+ was supposed to be better??? This certainly does not cater to most people who park hop. In fact, they will probably find they will be selling less park hoppers because of it.

We took a Disney survey on this. One option that I think would have been better was to be able to reserve 6 FP in one day. As you use your first, the fourth becomes available. Use your second, the fifth becomes available, etc. This way, you can reserve the more popular attractions for later in the day at a different park, but it forces you not to get FP+ and not use them. Hopefully Disney will keep tweaking this.

1. I don't follow this logic. According to you, doing anything FP+ related on a smartphone would be considered unfair. Initial FP+ can be booked and changed on smartphones, I think it's a matter of time until the rolling FP can be as well. I imagine they are waiting until they either have (1) more confidence that the app can handle it or (2) the ability to ensure the rolling FP can only be booked once a guest is in the park. Possibly a combination of the two.

2. If I'm understanding what you're saying, you think it's possible to use 3 FP at MK for example, book an Epcot FP, and then head to Epcot to use it? Nope. The rolling FP can only be booked at the park you're in. You would need to hop to Epcot first and then book the FP.

3. The act of going to the kiosk is the same, but the new kiosks take much longer than the old ones did. Sticking a ticket in with a time popping out is way less time consuming than someone figuring out how to use the kiosk and selecting their ride and time themselves.

4. I don't know if they'll be easier to get, maybe they will, maybe they won't. They have a pretty low capacity compared to attraction FP+ that the number of people who no longer view them as a desirable option may not make too much of a difference.

5. No, it will just make them equally bad throughout the day (if they are bad to begin with), as people are using more FP throughout the day, not simply changing when they use the 3. The afternoon ones will still be filled, but so will the morning and evening. There's no reason to believe less FP will be used at the busier times of day.

6. They decide to visit Disneyland instead? ;)

I feel like it's just extra work & aggravation that I don't want to deal with on vacation.

They will able to reserve fastpass+ through the app, according to Orlando Sentinel. So, I don't see any problem in people who doesn't own a smartphone, go a kiosk to make new reservations. It's working like this right now. If you have a smartphone (android or iphone), which most people has, they have a facility, like much other facilities in own a smartphone.

Just so you are aware you have to be at the park to book your fast pass plus.... so you will not have a ride waiting for you. You have to book on arrival choosing from what is leftover from the day. :)

I disagree with your assessment of these two points.

1. If Disney were this concerned about perceived "fairness" to people without smart phones (because the app doesn't JUST work on iPhones), they wouldn't have enabled an app for FP+ at all. Allowing people to use the app to select additional FPs is no different from allowing people to use the app to change existing FPs. I believe it will only be a matter of time before app use is allowed for additional selections.

3. The advantage of the previous system of getting FP at the ride was that I could base my FP selection ON THE ACTUAL CONDITION OF THE STANDBY WAIT. So, for instance, I could show up to Space Mountain at 11 a.m. Huh, standby is only 15 minutes because the ride just came back up from closure? Great! No need to pull FP! Or...oh, the wait is 60 minutes. Let me pull an FP, ride COP, Peoplemover and Buzz, and now my Space window is open. With being forced to pre-schedule FPs or schedule them from a kiosk elsewhere in the park, I have to predict whether a ride will have a standby wait I'm willing to stand in or whether I need an FP. So, I scheduled my FP for Space 30 days out at 11 a.m., only to find it's basically a walk-on. That was a waste. Now, although I am allowed to reschedule that FP since I didn't use it, the only FPs available are for Stitch and Tiki Room...

Disney has said on their official blog that additional passes must be selected at kiosks. Can you link to the Orlando Sentinel article that says you can use the app, along with their source?

This ability will not released right now, but in near future. They are working on the app.

"The My Disney Experience app tied to the FastPass+ program will not be used initially to get additional passes.

"We are working on ways to make this available on the app," a Disney World spokeswoman said Thursday."

Thanks! Of course it doesn't help people going now. Thankfully our trip isn't until September. I hope most of the bugs are worked out by then.
