This is just so sad,,and makes me ask WHY would someone do this?? I don't call it 'playing'??

Just go to You Tube and type in La Comay December 18th.

Not to go too far off topic, but what is the deal with that La Comay show? A puppet head? Is the person in disguise?

I don‘t know what the deal with that show is. It was very odd. It was like a grown man dressed up as a full size, female muppet. And carried on full conversations dressed that way. It was hard to overlook.

I think when we brought up him not having children we are trying to rationalize his poor decision making. By no means do I think anyone here believes that is 100% the reason for this. Just another piece of the puzzle. I know I didn't realize all the potential safety hazards surrounding toddlers until I had one. Your mindset isn't there until you are responsible for one.

No doubt parents make bad choices. We are all human. I still can't believe some of the dumb things my parents let me do when I was kid. And I am sure I have made unsafe choices for my child too. That is EXACTLY why so many are invested in this case. To make sure we don't make the same mistake.

Exactly true about most of our parents! And I am sure I wouldn’t have to think hard for mistakes I made. Letting Dd turn upside down in the car seat I forgot to buckle in, comes to mind. And she was my third child and I was taking care of plenty of other people’s babies and toddlers at the time. We all make decisions or choices in a moment and sometimes do not realize till later the danger we put our child in. Unfortunately, this poor man has to live with that for the rest of his life. Whether he spends that time at home or in jail. It’s just so sad and so tragic and so very frightening.

Clearly you're not in the Christmas-y spirit either.

I was referring to the seemingly rude tone from the comments and calling people sick and saying something was wrong with them. That seemed extremely obvious but I guess you just couldn't help yourself could you from commenting (rhetorical comment here).

Thank you for also demonstrating what I was referring to :thumbsup2 (and yes at the moment I'm dipping into not being in the Christmas-y spirit).

Oh I am in a fine Christmas spirit! Thanks! I just found your mention of the Christmas spirit ironic (or maybe even inappropriate) when the discussion is about a child dying.

You were looking for something to comment and we both know it but nice try. Have a great rest of your day but please don't quote me again.

I just watched it. Dear God. My blood ran cold and now I feel sick to my stomach. There is no doubt, not a shadow or a hint, that the grandfather knew that window was open.

The show has been on the air, in one form or another, for decades. The character was created by a puppeteer to be a gossipy, trash-rag type but with time the show gained popularity and legitimacy. Now it tackles real news issues. It was (is?) Puerto Rico’s most popular show and was featured on The Daily Show, which is how I’m familiar with it.

So was that puppet the video from the ship. On la comya. Is the video still on somewhere

Yes, the muppet was one of the 2 on air commentators on la comya watching and discussing the footage from the ship. I just googled la comya/ royal Caribbean accident and watched it that way.

Funny you mention judging when you're doing exactly that. I wanted to watch it because I have a little one and I needed to know what really happened. My baby is very young and we want to take her on a cruise with grandparents when she gets a little older - I needed to know that this is not something that could happen if you're a watching your child in a reasonable manner.
Rest assured it is not. It has never, as far as has ever been reported, happened before in the history of cruising. The actual risk is absolutely ZERO.

What is wrong with some of you? Seeking out video of a toddler falling to her death? Why? To go through the trauma of watching a horrific video so you feel you can better judge a total stranger when no one on earth cares one bit about your opinion? It’s sick, it really is. I don’t understand why anyone would want to watch it.

I would not describe this as a "video of a toddler falling to her death" or "horrific". The video is from the inside of the cruise ship and shows the events leading up to the fall. I do agree that watching a video from outside the ship of her actually falling and dying would be very disturbing, but that's not what this is.

People have been watching it because they want to know what really happened. I mentioned earlier in the thread that if I were the parent in this situation, I would HAVE to watch the video because I would need to know the truth. There have been multiple different versions of the story and none have really made any logical sense, so video evidence is really the only way to know what actually precipitated the accident.

My feelings EXACTLY.

You can know what happened from what people have posted about the video. It reminds me of the compilation of photos passed around on Facebook of photos taken right before people died (except it’s a video and a child). No one here is on the jury.

So one person can watch it and thats fine, and everyone else just accepts what they say happened in the video?

Nevermind that multiple people seeing the exact same thing may relate what they saw differently.

Probably, but not absolutely. I have no intention of watching it. You feel people who watch it should be excoriated. We have both after (or not) on our feelings. People who watch the video feel differently - and don't deserve to be criticized for acting on their feelings.

I was one who watched the video, and I'm not sorry that I did, or that I posted a detailed description of what was in it. Allow me to go OT (again!) for just a bit...

Back in the Stone Age, before we had kids, DH and I were firefighters/EMTs/EMT instructors. In addition, we were members of our local Stress Team. What this team does is, they help EMS personnel who have been through terrible calls, to deal with their emotions. The problem is, when you have a horrendous call, you have all this "stuff", and no place to put it. Worst scenario: serious injury of death of a child. So, the stress team comes in and gives them a place to unload all that. We listen to them, we cry with them, we take on their pain so they can be free of it. Not everyone can be an EMS worker, and precious few can do what the stress team does. DH and I were specially trained for what we did. I have heard stories that I'll take to my grave.

So, more than most, I can handle stuff like the video. I'm in complete sympathy with those who choose not to view it, and respect their choice. As others have said, I'm more about seeking the truth than looking for gore--I've seen (and heard) enough for a lifetime, thanks. I would feel differently if people were seeking out photos from the dock, post-fall, or autopsy photos or stuff like that. That, to me, is ghoulish and unnecessary. Believe me, I've been on enough horrible scenes to have a pretty good idea of what it looked like, and I don't need actual photos kicking around my brain. But, if my viewing the video and reporting on it can help others gain understanding, I'm fine with that. I was completely shocked that my DH, having had the same training and experience that I do, broke down when he saw the video. But again, I understand why it's so disturbing.

I just watched the La Comay video. I can understand spanish as my family and DHs are Puerto Rican.

The commentary, essentially, is along the same lines as the prevailing thought here. In general, the hosts do not believe the story being given by the grandfather and the lawyer at ALL. They were quite scathing in their criticism towards the actions of the grandfather, saying it is very clear that he was OUT the window and that the child could not have possibly been in a position to fall outside the window if the grandpa had not purposely held her out of it. They also made some passing comments about how he "appears to be about 80, but is only 51, can you believe that?" They said that he had to feel the wind, hear the sounds and that there is no plausible way he didn't know the window was open. Essentially, they dump all over his claim by pointing out how far he is leaning out and that 18" would mean, at the angle he was leaning, his head would have smashed into the window, at the very least.

Later, they comment that he does BOTH things: perches her on the railing AND holds he out the actual window (he does this first, then brings her back in, sits her on the railing, adjusts his hold on her, then picks her up again to place her forward over the windowsill where it is clear (by her hand gripping the window frame) that her upper body is OUT the window, leaning forward. They also comment how there is a lapse in the time between the child disappearing from view and him collapsing. They wonder whether he just "couldn't believe what he was seeing" as an explanation for the delay, and say that they can't imagine he purposely watched her fall all the way to the ground before reacting, but that it was a bit of an odd reaction.

Finally the puppet guy makes some statements that this was not a blood relative, he was a step grandpa. He says it seems that the "pain" being experienced by the family does not seem to jive with their behavior in the immediate PR and lawsuits filed, and their insistence that the grandpa is innocent EVEN THOUGH no one in the family has seen the video. He says that they don't want to watch the video because, deep down, they know it will show them the truth, that the grandpa was negligent with the child and they don't want to face the truth. Both the puppet guy and the host seem quite angry at the whole situation and the fact that the family refuses to admit responsibility.

Just as a commentary of my own, these news shows in PR tend to be very dramatic and over the top (it's kinda par for the course for the culture, to be honest). HOWEVER, when watching this, I was struck by the very obvious tone of both hosts of what a shame and tragedy this entire ordeal is. They seem very genuine in their disbelief of the story being told and seem to have a huge amount of sadness for the poor child. They seem quite bitter towards the grandfather and seem to have absolutely NO sympathy for him, and they approach the opinion that this man knew exactly what he was doing when he was doing it and is now playing the victim card, which they don't take kindly to.

Thanks for explaining this. I don't speak Spanish, and find the puppet person to be very off-putting.

thanks DL gal for translating from the video I found interesting what they had to say about the GF and how things happened while the video was hard to watch it answered alot of questions

I can totally understand why the parents or family cant watch it but it would answer the question of what really happened bu then they would have to live with the fact that GF was responisble for what happend to their DD
