Things not going well with the DDP changes

I go in Early FEb.

I booked through AAA.

I have not received any brocures about the changes.
I was not told about the changes when I did ADRs.
My AAA agent did tell me about the changes.
The disney website for dining packages is currently "Sorry, the page you are trying to access is currently not available. "

http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/tickets/packageDetail?id=PackageDetailMYWDiningPkg07Page

that is the link I get when searching the disney site, notice the "07" in the link.

I have switched $300 of my spending money to cover the tip for the trip.

We are also going in early feb, we also went with AAA and Nope, we did not get any info about the "changes" nor did our AAA lady tell us about the changes (She was pretty clueless when it came to WDW info)
If I did not read Disboards I would know nothing about it until we got to WDW.

this is more an observation than anything else, I am not talking about the servers or decisions by disney, but all this discussion makes me wonder when tipping became such a set in stone fixed amount? I have always taken "gratuity" to mean the money I am leaving the server because I want to show them I am "grateful" for the good service they have provided me during my meal and appreciate the extra effort to make my dinning nice. I do try to tip well for good service. I know that servers make terrible money and depend on tipping to make a living wage, however I want to be the one to decide what that tip will be. If a restaurant is asking me to pay a manditory % of my check to the server, then I am essentually paying a portion of that persons wage and that is the employers responsibility not mine. Somehow the trend of tipping a certain amount has morphed into you HAVE to tip 10/18/20% not just as Disney ( they are just the ones to list it on paper) I know this is disney policy now and they have the right to make company decisons as they please. I have just noticed that many people posting have spoken of tipping elsewhere in the same terms and wondered what others thought about it.
I think there are actually two different scenarios...at least.

At most destination resorts I have visited in the last 10 years or so, the restaurants usually have a mandatory "Service Charge" of at least 15%. 18% mandatory is at least as common as 15%, and I have seen it as high as 22%.

When you go to a restaurant like that, you have a clear choice -- they've stated their policy, you either eat there and pay it, or you go somewhere else. That choice, incidentally, is exactly the choice parties of 6 or more and all DDE diners have at WDW -- the policy is 18% mandatory...eat here or not.

Most places we dine other than destination resorts there is no mandatory "gratuity." But there is an expectation that people with good manners will leave a reasonable tip.

Why? Because the national minimum wage for servers is very low...I've seen as low as $2.19 per hour. In Florida, where WDW is located, the minimum wage for servers is $3.65 per hour. Add the fact that most servers are not allowed to work a full 40-hour week, and you can see they have very little guaranteed income for a job which is both physically and emotionally demanding.

If you ask patrons of the restaurants, they will usually give you a range of 15-20% as being what they consider an acceptable tip. 10% is low -- not in my "good manners" range for acceptable service. 10% is actually the tip I would leave if service was really lousy and I wanted to insult the server. Great service? More. Rotten service? Certainly less -- maybe zero -- and almost certainly a complaint to management as well.

Anyone with experience in restaurant management knows that the servers had little to no input on this - it was absolutely a management decision. And it is not the servers fault if CRO didn't tell someone about the changes. Anyone that would fail to tip their server out of spite is classless.

When I called in December to book my January 08 trip, I was told multiple times that the Dining Plan had changes and what they were.

When i booked my September trip back in August I was told several times of this change.

Also, part of these changes were negotiated with the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Union. While Disney Management may have proposed the change of dropping the included tip, the contract had to be ratified by Disney employees.

The topic of tipping policy in America is not the subject of this thread. Lets stick to the topic of how changes in the DDP are impacting the customer.

Some great points have been raised in this thread. Thanks everyone for raising the valid points.

Funny to see the FAQ change in response to this thread:

Q. Are gratuities included with any of the Magic Your Way Dining Plans?
A. Gratuity is not included except for Dinner Shows and Cinderella's Royal Table. Merchandise or photo-imaging products that may be offered at Character Dining Experiences are not included, except at Cinderella's Royal Table.

Truthfully, they could have done a better job getting the word out, especially with such a big change. I tested a travel agent recently asking for information about the dining plan. They sent information about the 2007 plan. :sad2:

The best laid plans of mice and men...

Funny to see the FAQ change in response to this thread:

Yep! I was pleased to see this as well.

I still think it's sad that it took 2 days from the time you posted it until they started to fix it and that they didn't bother to read & fix the rest of it at the same time!

Good point. This was a major change in a plan that has been around for years. Would have been better if the renamed the plan. Then they could have had links to new and old programs.

Hopefully, they will improve in their communication (not that it will help folks who have already gone or are going soon)

I knew about the changes because of these boards. I booked the bounce back offer in Sept. for free dinning. When I was talking to CRO because we had to switch resorts, I found out I had a code by my name and asked which way should I go. With the code or free dining? She said " oh the free dinning. You get an appitizer, entre and desert and your tip is included. " I said I think they took the appitizer and tip away, and she said? oh no they didn't" So I think alot of the problems are not everyone is trainned right. We are going to try the DDP. but I don't think we would do it if it was not free.

I think it's more that the FAQ was changed in response to the issues currently occurring AT Walt Disney World with the DDP Guests (which of course should have apparently been done sooner); we just THINK the DIS members have such a major and prompt effect on what Disney does :teeth:

Ah, but isn't that more a reflection on the Travel Agent than on Disney? :)

I'm reading this thread from the end (page before your post) to the front, so forgive me if I answer something that wasn't really asked.

But if you just swap "8" for "7" in that URL (something I learned to *try* when working customer service at amazon.com) you get the right page. The URL for the page that you get to is here: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/tickets/packageDetail?id=PackageDetailMYWDiningPkg08Page&bhcp=1

I know that there's more in that URL than yours, but really, all I did was go to your link, put in 8 instead of 7 and clicked go, and bingobango there it took me.

I booked our February Disney Trip in August through AAA. My AAA lady made sure that I knew of the changes with the 2008 DDP. It also specifies it on my invoice.

Copied & Pasted from my invoice:

"DISNEYS DINING PLAN INCLUDES: 1 COUNTER SERVICE MEAL 1 TABLE SERVICE MEAL AND 1 SNACK PER PERSON PER NIGHT FOR THE TOTAL OF 10 PER PERSON FOR YOUR ENTIRE STAY. GRATUITY AND APPETIZER NO LONGER INCLUDED."

well, as far as my opinio goes...I think it really stinks for the servers. but we had to see this coming...Disney is not here to fatten our wallets-it only is there for itself. It is a business everyone!! Also-with all the message boards out there with people talking bout how to MAXIMIZE the plan and always get the most expensive things...why would Disney keep allowing that? WHen I first learned of the plan I saw so many posts telling how to maximize it get your moneys worth. haha What was most shocking were the people getting the FREE dining and they were concerned with getting the most out of it. I mean, I agree that Disney needs to change something about this..it is slowing down tables turning over and is really going to cost them some good waitstaff. but on the other hand...maybe all the bad servers will quit because I know I have had a couple who would have never made it in the real world of serving where tips are not included.

I'm not sure how a trip to Disney is supposed to fatten MY wallet, after all I am paying for the vacation. As far as maximizing goes, I guess it's fine for corporate America, the money-maker that is Disney, to find any and all ways to maximize their profits, but when a patron wants to get the most out of their vacation, it is somehow wrong.

We ordered a Planning Video for our May 2008 trip back in October 2007. The video said the tips and appetizer were included. This was the 2007 video; when I requested the video I said we would be going in May 2008. There was no mention there were changes to the plan for 2008.

My parents booked the DVC portion of the May 2008 trip back in July 2007. They were asked at that time if they'd be using the DDDP; no mention of changes.

We made ADR's in November for our 2008 trip; no mention of the lack of appetizer or the added gratuity changes.

The majority of folks visiting Disney do not get on these boards to find out this sort of information. I can almost guarantee you that Disney will not send me any information before my trip to inform me of the changes in the plan (they haven't in the past).

The 2008 Planning video should be available before 2008. Cast Members should be better trained and have up to date, accurate information. Restaurants should be finalized before 2008 as to whether they will participate with the 2008 DDP. If we are allowed to make ADR's at 180 days, the changes should be available at that time (yes, I understand that means in July of the previous year).

I read the times guide right away. The rest gets tossed to side until later.

However, I made sure to read the dining plan booklet ASAP during our last trip. The plan was new and I wanted to be sure I understood how it worked.
I agree that the first time we chose the DP (this past October) I scoured the materials to make sure I knew what was going on. However if I didn't have the DIS I probably wouldn't have done that again and would have been in for a suprise on our Dec. 08 trip.
This just should have been thought out and planned much better.

Just curious-when did the union vote take place before WDW knew they could/would make changes to the 2008 DDP???

I forgot to reply earlier when someone asked if I was mad at AAA or disney for the wrong info when I booked through AAA. Since it has been brought up again with someone else, I wanted to note -
I am not "mad" at either, but I have to wonder- how many packages does AAA book? I know in my region, there is one woman whose *sole* job it is to book disney vacations. So if there is a company who is
1. very closely linked with Disney
and
2. has someone who does nothing but deal with all things disney all day everyday
and she has no idea of changes, then I do see a failure on Disneys part to distribute this info.
