A quick post to say thank you to all the folks who presently serve in the military and to those who have served in the past. And especially to the families of those who sacrifice their time and sometimes their lives to protect our freedoms. God bless you all.

The 4th annual picnic at our house was a great success. Sue counted 33 people this year. From all appearances, everyone had a great time. Thanks to all who were able to come and make this a special weekend. And for those of you who couldn't make it this year for one reason or another, I guess we'll have to try again next year. No more ankle surgeries for you Liz.

Between all that walking around at Cedar Point and our house this weekend, I've decided to spend to day with my ankle elevated and iced.

Good morning, all! More grey skies, but luckily, no rain is falling. Good thing--my church choir is singing in a special Memorial Day service for the 15th year in a row! There is a small monument to the armed services in our little town and the VFW and American Legion do a little service and place a wreath there every year. We will be singing the National Anthem, a medley of the different armed services songs as well as Battle Hymn of the Republic--my personal fave (it's an awesome arrangement!) Pray that any impending storms hold off till noon!

To all who will be attending gatherings today, have a great time, hope you have wonderful weather!

To all who are stuck at home, feeling bored or alone, check out that new computer game! You'll be amazed at how fast the time goes!! And you'll be improving your eye/hand coordination too!!

To all who are under the weather, hurting in one way or another, or just plain lonely, I'm sending out prayers, pixie dust and lots of

Thanks, too, for the movie reviews! Not sure what we may do this afternoon besides go get some more Disney Dollars to put away for our DL trip! That in itself is fun--love wandering around TDS!! Never know WHAT might find it's way home in my bag!!

Ya'll take care. Mad, mad love and hugs and kisses to all!!

Many many prayers and thanks to our military for all you do, all you've done, all you give, and all you sacrifice... and Memorial Day best wishes to all YaYas who are enjoying time with friends and family today!

A hello to Jerrysboy, welcome to the Dis... :)

Glad to hear the picnic went well and all attending had a good time, TC! :bounce:

One more day and I guess my internet will go poof... until that new modem decides to show itself. Sigh. :(

Hello to Beth, Liz, Dave, Nancy, Elaine, Kristy, Betty, Rose Mary, JRKaren....

Have a good day all! :)

Morning, yaya's. Hope you're all taking time with your families today and remembering all those who have served and are currently away from their families serving our country.

We're having a barbeque today, rather, we're having people over...the thunderstorms are supposed to arrive at 3, same as our guests.

Eight viewings, no bidders...blech....

Sounds like everyone's doing cool stuff this weekend. We went to my going away dinner last night.

Gotta hit the market for a few dinner items and my marinade fixings!

Yep, and EIOP. Someday, I'll be able to do monster ketchups again!

Suzanne

 Happy Memorial day and many thanks to all who serve and have served to protect our country and our freedom. A special prayer for my dad who took great pride in serving his country before and after his retirement from the Army.

TC glad to hear the meet was such a great success. Hope someone posts some pics soon.

:wave2: Liz, yeah I'm pretty :bounce: about next weekend but, also stressing. I always do that before a trip

Kimmie, hope your modem shows tomorrow. I know what it's like to be without access to my friends :( . Have a great day.

 Betty! Sure wish you would stop in more often. :D

Beth, sure wish I could come to the service sounds like it will be wonderful. Sing proudly for us, ok?

Ok, off to find something to eat.
 and puckerup: to all.

Good morning :wave2:

Hope everyone has a good day today. Thought I would add a little Memorial Day trivia.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconcilation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act, P.L. 90 - 363, in 1971 to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

Moina Michael replied with her own poem:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war.

But most Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. People no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. Many think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country.

To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps."

Happy Memorial Day! My thanks to all who have served and are currently serving. :)

Slept in till 10 this morning. WOO HOO!! :bounce:

The picnic yesterday was a BLAST! I had so much fun. :teeth: John (& Sue) thank you so much for once again opening up your home to us. :)

The weather was gorgeous, up until about 8:30, then it poured down the rain.

And, yes, Amanda got her cheesecake. A very BIG slice of cheesecake. ;) :teeth:

Good morning all... awful storm came through last night... cable was not working quite right for a while.

Nancy, that was a wonderful post there :) Very nicely said.

:wave2: Hi Dave!!!

Liz, storms didn't get bad here until very late last night. I will go outside soon and check out damage if any. I don't think any happened though.

John, I am so glad you all had a great time yesterday! I will definitely do all I can to come next year :) Sounds like a great turn out!!

Beth, I hope all goes well for you today with your singing :)

Kimmie, I hope you won't be offline for long  Remember if you miss the internet, you can always do AOL for a month for free ;)

Suzanne, I hope that all goes well for your picnic. Sending tons of PD your way for the house to sell.

Rose Mary, I hope you have a wonderful day... what a sweet thing to say about your dad :) I feel the same about my cousin and other family members who have served.

Oh and Nancy, nice sig ;)

Sherry, so glad you had a great time yesterday!!!

off to check outside since it is no longer raining and get some lunch :)

Nancy, Thanks for the Memorial day trivia. I received a poppy yesterday from a veteran and remember my dad giving them out for donations but, didn't really remember what the symbol stood for.

Sherry glad you got to sleep in. Cheesecake, yummmmmm!

Hello and Happy Memorial Day! I just wanted to thank the Ya Yas who were at the NEOhio DISmeet yesterday for making Josh and I feel so welcome! Everyone was so friendly! We had the best time and will definitely be attending more DISmeets in the future (especially if there are microwaveable s'mores)! ;) BTW, the cheesecake was excellent!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Hi Colleen! :wave2:
Glad to see you popping in. Pop in anytime. :)
Colleen is total YA YA material, y'all. :)
We had a total blast yesterday!
NEVER gonna eat microwavable s'mores again! :rotfl:

microwave s'mores!!! I might need to know how to make these! I LOVE s'mores!! My favorites are from Prime Time!! Oh so yummy!!

I don't think you want to make the kind of s'mores we made, Liz. :rotfl: They were kinda awful. They had us :rotfl: all night long, though, and there are pics and video of us making fools out of ourselves trying to eat them. :o :teeth:

Thanks for the invitation, Sherry! I am so worried about those pics and the video being shown. We looked like complete freaks. People are going to think there is something seriously wrong with us! :rotfl:

I think people have thought there was something seriously wrong with me for awhile now. :o ;) :teeth:

Pirates news from the RB:

Keith Richards to Star in 2 Pirates of the Caribbean Sequels:

Johnny Depp has said he would love to have the Rolling Stone's Keith Richards play Captain Jack Sparrow's father in the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean as he based the character after him. Well, ComingSoon.net reports that Depp's wish will come true as Richards is signing up for the next movie in the franchise. And the news doesn't end there. Dark Horizons reports that a third Pirates movie will be filmed back-to-back with the second one and that they will be released six months apart, similar to the way the second and third Matrix films were done.

How cool is that? :bounce:

Just a quick hello to everyone this afternoon! I hope everyone is having a great day. I'm heading out shortly to go see the Mickey statues in Boston with my nieces and nephews.

Karen

Have fun, JRKaren. :wave2:

Gotta go get ready for a picnic at our friend's house.
