The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Morning y'all,

Janice, I'm glad it was minor!! I was getting A ready when Bob told me, I was worried about you! Whew.

Ann, I'm glad your Mom is doing well! I know Alexis brightens my days!

Kathy, We did get to see it on tv, Bob recorded it! It was great to see the players having such a good time!
I guess giving up was the right choice. Friends that were ahead of us by 20 mins, didn't get across until 8:40! They were able to catch some of the parade. Waited an hour in the ferry line to come back & then had someone come pick them up. It was 1:30 by the time they got home!

Kathy, Looks like we are going to get this chilly weather in WDW! Can't say I'm happy about that, but I am finally feeling excited about the trip.

Aimee, Continued prayers for a speedier recovery!

Lauren, It's been an impossible couple of weeks for you. I hope you can get some rest!:hug:

Still have prime rib left, I'm going to make sandwiches for dinner.

Becky, That soup looks great! Is it Mario's recipe? I found that one online a long time ago & love it!

Oops, posted here by mistake!!! I thought I was posting on the perfume thread...anyway, dinner will be cheezy spicy beefy macaroni. Fattening but comforting in all this snow!

Nope, it is another Barefoot Contessa recipe! I have been cooking a lot from her books this week. I found it on the foodtv site too. Why do I buy so many cookbooks when all the recipes are online for free? Here is a link:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/ribollita-recipe/index.html

I used pepper bacon instead of pancetta, did not add the amount of recommended salt, tossed in a couple of parmesean rinds with the chicken stock, and did not add the bread she calls for at the end since we were having my homemade bread on the side, but otherwise it is the same recipe. It was very good. It makes a lot though! I have two more quarts of it in my freezer.

Mario's was meatless & I usually add whatever I have in the house. Otherwise the recipe looks really similar. In a pinch it's even great with store-bought big croutons.

Reporting in from earthquake central. Everything is ok. It seems we get minor tremors every so often. This one woke me out of a not so sound sleep. I thought with all the wind and snow a plow hit something.

.

I saw this on TV and was so worried about you and Alex. Thank goodness you are okay!

Sheryl- I saw that you did not get to the parade but then saw Bethany and Lauri's reports adn figured that you were probably one of the luckyt ones! I am glad that there was such a good turnout though, says so much for your neck of the woods :thumbsup2

Ann- you will never be sorry that you are so close to your parents. WHat you are showing your children is priceless, that gift goes both ways. I know that every time one of my kids shows up when we need them I cannot even explain how I feel. Glad your Mom is doing so well and hope that the other medical issues she has are going to be corrected

Michelle-I am so sorry to hear that your neighbors prognosis was not more optimistic. I know that they are going to appreciate your support as tehy get through the treatments.

AImee- NO TACO BELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl:I am so happy for your DH!

KAt- post away! I was not able to see the links before becasue I kept losing my connection. Now I know I won't miss out!

Becky- our kids should have had that 1/2 day that you put in. So far just snow fluffies here.

VIckie- how is The Boy doing? I think dealing with that kind of violence is shattering for young people, adults cannot grasp it so how can kids? I was sad to see that your nephew was still struggling, how are his parents holding up?

Lauren- I have not forgotten you and your family. :grouphug:

Hi Everyone! The kids are going to be home in a few minutes. They are closing the schools early ahead of the weather. It sounds like it might be pretty bad here and even worse where Robin is.

Robin -- I'm sorry you are having so many issues right now. I hope everything looks better soon.

Aimee -- I'm so glad to see you back here. Big congratulations to your DH on the new job! That is fantastic, and I know it is a huge relief for both of you. I'm glad you are doing so well.

Ann -- I'm glad your mom did well yesterday. My kids are a real source of joy for my parents too.

Gretchen -- I'm sorry the house isn't moving along right now. I'm glad Kenny is trying to work things out though. Good luck!

Sheryl -- I'm excited for your trip. I hope you have a great time! I'm sorry you didn't get in to see the parade. I saw some of it on the news and it looked crazy! Fun, but crazy.

Michelle -- I'm so sorry to hear about your neighbor's prognosis. I'm sure just knowing you are there and thinking of them is a source of comfort. The family must be overwhelmed right now.

Maria -- I'm sorry you aren't feeling well again. I hope the bug passes quickly.

Janice -- I'm glad you're okay!

Dinner is going to be pot roast (the PW recipe), mashed potatoes, and green beans. Comfort food for a snowy afternoon!

ETA: I knew I would forget some things...

Lauren -- I'm glad you're home. Hugs.

Vickie -- I'm sorry your nephew isn't feeling well again. Prayers that he gets better soon.

Nancy -- I wonder if the snow missed you? We are starting to see flakes here.

o I have a sad little girl here. She did her no school dance: put a spoon under her pillow, flushed an ice cube down the toilet, yelled snow day intot eh freezer four time. No school. Now there is still no snow adn she was dressed like the kid in Christmas Story :rotfl2:. Well after sulking for an hour she gave up and is playing some game with Buddy and has just changed the rules again :rotfl: I have no idea how we will get her home if teh snow ever does come, Buddy needs to be in Hartford before 6:30 tomorrow to fix the other wrist so she cannot spend teh night.

Dinner is American Chop Suey, our snow day standby, and corn muffins.

Last night we had pan seared chicken, stuffing, and green beans

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers for our neighbors. Such a sad situation.

Kathy- I love watching those clips, thank you!

Lauren- Still thinking of you and your family.

Ann- your kids are getting such a gift by getting to know their grandparents like that. Sadly Mike's parents live in Denver and only see Zachy once or twice a year and my parents live about an hour away but don't really interact with him. They're much more of the kids should be seen and not heard school of thought and visiting with him basically means he should play by himself while they watch and have adult conversation with us. And also at their convenience. My mother has not yet seen him before noon because she takes exercise classes in the mornings and refuses to miss them and then wonders why he's always tired when he's past nap/bedtime. I've seriously been considering trying to move to CO so he gets exposure to more involved grandparents. The joy from that type of relationship is mutual to both.

Dinner tonight will be baked ziti and spinach sauteed with cranberries and pine nuts. We're just starting to get some snow here but for once I think my part of the state won't get too much compared to other places.

Nancy, I guess I hope for Kady that you do get snow! ;) We had an interesting morning here. I had two left school shoes this morning, no right shoes! She has two pairs, one that's supposed to stay at my house, but they both ended up at her's. :confused3 She had a field trip this morning, so I coudlnt run to her house for the shoes. Hopefully little ones don't get demerits for being out of uniform!

But for all of you adults, I pray the storm won't be as severe as predicted!:flower3:!

Michelle, I'm very sorry for your neighbors. So sad for such a young family.

Michelle I am sorry to hear that about your neighbors. How sad.

Nancy I can only laugh at the image of Katie doing her snow dance.

Alex just wants school to end. He informed me yesterday that it is 73 more days and he really hopes for NO snow days. That would only extend the school year.

In defense of our city's ability to handle crowds, they are estimating the crowd numbered over 800,000 people!!! They expected around 350,000. My guess is that it was many, more people than the largest single parade attendance even on Mardi Gras day.

Reporting in from earthquake central. Everything is ok. It seems we get minor tremors every so often. This one woke me out of a not so sound sleep. I thought with all the wind and snow a plow hit something.

We had several about 20 years ago over a couple days time, be prepared for more.

I am only planning on staying at the office until around 12 since there is a storm coming.

Glad to hear it. The worst part of this one has not been the snow, although that's not too good either, it's the wind. :scared:

Why do I buy so many cookbooks when all the recipes are online for free?

That's why I am not going to buy the PW book, it's a nice book but I can go right to the site to get the recipes.

It's crazy outside, the wind is blowing like crazy! :scared1: That's what my hair would look like if I went out without a hat on.

It's so sad, Captain Phil Harris from the show Deadliest Catch passed away, he was only 53. :sad1:

You know it's bad when the news guys start talking about how the one shaves his head! :rotfl: The one guy has been on the air since 4am and he looks like he could fall off of the chair.

Lauren – I’ve been thinking of you, just haven’t had time to call, sorry.

Aimee – Please be careful what you eat! The city started planning the parade almost two weeks ago, I just don’t think they ever thought the crowd would even be half the size it was. I’ve lived here all of my life and have never seen anything to compare to last night.

Becky – Thanks for the scampi recipe, can’t wait to try it!

Sheryl – I can handle the chilly weather as long as it’s not raining and chilly! I’m getting excited!!!!

Nan – I’m laughing out loud at Kady and the game rule changing, Kyle was forever doing that when he was young.

Michelle – It’s sad to hear that your parents aren’t involved with Zachy. They are truly missing out on a very special relationship and equally as sad for Zachy.

Janice – I’d like to thank you once again for helping us take this Mardi Gras trip, if it weren’t for you we wouldn’t be going!

For all of you in the path of the nasty weather, please stay safe!!!!:grouphug:

Thanks to everyone for the kind words/thoughts about the house. I'm not terribly worried, I'm one of those people who believe things work out as they should. If Kenny gets it figured out, fine. If not, we'll try again later.

Michelle - I'm so sorry about your neighbor's prognosis. I can't imagine how difficult it is for all of them. And I'm sorry about your parents. I'm sorry for your child and for you. They don't know what they're missing.

Lauri - I hope to check out your pictures on FB when I get a minute.

Kat and Sheryl - Have a great trip!!!! I hate that you aren't getting "Florida" weather, but heck, it's vacation.

Nancy - I'll be praying that Buddy's second operation turns out as well as his first.

I'm sorry this is such a quickie/shoddy post, but I'm having a horrible day. I ask that you all please pray for Jessica. She is one of Hailey's therapists and she is currently in surgery. She had a car accident this morning and was carried to the hospital by helicopter. She has a broken jaw, several deep facial lacerations (which they hope don't have much nerve damage), and a crushed right upper arm. The jaw is supposed to be a clean break and they think they can wire it together. And they are putting a rod in her arm too. They don't expect her to be out of surgery until sometime between 7 and 9 tonight. I'm sitting here in my office, but I swear I didn't want to leave that waiting room until I knew she was ok. I may just leave and go back, I'm not really thinking very clearly anyway.

Oh goodness.

Oh Gretchen, I am so sorry. I will be praying for Jessica, please update us this evening if you can.

Gretchen, sending prayers. Please let us know when you can how she is making out. Hugs
