The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Good morning my friends.

I am so sorry I have been MIA. I had a Doctor Appointment on Tuesday in Omaha (3 1/2 hours each way). Took all day, and then yesterday I played catch up here at work. Sorry if I have missed anything. I will read back and catch up today.

I did want to tell Kat and Sheryl to have a GREAT trip. I wish I was going to.

WFDT ~ Basketball game food. I have brought a good and healthy lunch to work today so if I eat a hotdog tonight it will be ok.

I can't wait to start cooking again. I got my Cooking Light magazine all ear marked with things I want to try. Just get this darn play over with and maybe things will be normal again. I sure hope so. I am READY!!!

I will now go read back and BBL to catch up. . .

Good Morning! I had a nice long post last night, hit submit and it all disappeared :confused3

Laura- preayers for Gregg. Please update us when you know how he is.

Gretchen- any more news about Jessica? I have her on my mind as well

Bethany- Holy Smokes! I mean literally!!!!!!

Aimee- pleasse stay in and rest. And no Taco Bell!!!!!!! Congrats for your DH!

Michelle- your parents will never know what they are missing but they will wonder why the kids are not around when they are older. My own kids had a very close relationshipe with my Mom but my IL's were pretty busy with their own things. That was their right but when my mom needed them they were always available. They loved their Gramps and never refussed him and love their Meme but they are not as visable as they were with my Mom. I see that you are going to bring Zach to the senior center and that is a great idea. My kids met an older couple when Donny was 12 and they were more family than I can ever say.

Kat and Sheryl- I cannot remember when you are leaving so I want to wish you both safe travels

Maria- How are you feeling?

Good morning all, sorry I was so whiney the other day. No real problems here, just lots of tiny things.

Thinking of Greg today.

Aimee- Glad your escaping soon, congratulations on the job!!!!

Gretchen- Thinking of Jessica

Ann- Glad mom is doing well.

Gotta go, I'm on the library 15 minute computer. I won't be able to get back to the library for a number of days, wish you all the best.

If you could spare a thought or prayer I would appreciate it!

Sendin good vibes ower the water for Greg.

Thanks for all of your kind words about my parents. It really is more their loss but it does make me sad for what Zachy is missing too. .

Im sorry for Zachy.
My mum is very much in the boys life but she does favour my nephew.
Its never been a big issue really but as the boy gets older he is starting to notice.
Our trip to WDW in 07 was very hard.
DH is the most calm ,placid person you could meet but he was fit to be tied.
He swore never to go on holiday altogether again.
He has mellowed a wee bit but the fact we are gettin to go just the 3 of us in October is probably just as well.

I ate mostly normal foods today - my colleague snuck in Mickey D's for lunch and it went down okay.

Mickey Ds !!! :yay:

I am so sorry I have been MIA. I had a Doctor Appointment on Tuesday in Omaha (3 1/2 hours each way). .

Have I missed some thing ?

Are you sick ?

Busy day here.

Its FIL's birthday today so we are visiting there, then the boy has his first school disco.

He is so excited about it

He is just desperate to show of his " dancing skills "

Boy is a born show off !!

BBL...

Hi, everyone! Sorry I've been MIA. Long weekend, and lot's of crazy busy stuff. Anyway, I'm back, and all caught up. I know I won't remember everything, so I'm praying for y'all and sending good thoughts your way!

Michelle - I'm so sorry for your neighbor's prognosis. I think you are being very kind and considerate to let them know you are available whenever. A batch of muffins, cookies or a loaf of bread every now and again would be welcome, I would think! I'm so sorry that Zachy doesn't have grandparents that want to spend time playing with him. My husband's mother is like that. She likes to think she's the best grandmother in the world, but she loses interest after about 10 minutes. She loves them when they are babies, but once they are mobile, she loses interest! I like your idea of the retirement center!

Vickie - I'm so sorry your nephew is still sick. Many prayers going out for him! I'm also sorry that your son had to witness such meanness! Give him extra hugs for me! That kind of intolerance makes me sick! One of my best friends in college was beaten to death because he was gay. It was horrible. He was such a gentle man who would never hurt a fly! I miss him every day! His favorite drink was Mountain Dew, so every time I see a can or bottle I think of Gary!

Marissa - I'm so glad that those boys have you to advocate for them! I feel so sorry for the parents that they can't see the treasures that they have. Please continue to work for those boys. Sounds like they really need you!

Gretchen - How are things with your aide (sorry, I forgot her name!) What a horrible accident! I'm praying that she came through surgery ok, and that she will be alright! How's Hailey???

Maria - How are you feeling? Sorry that Emily is testing you. Teenagers can do that, and those that are "theatrical" are some of the best at it! I'm glad that you and Greg are getting away for some couple time. Make the most of it!!!

Laura - Greg has been in my prayers this morning. Please let us know when you find out how he is. My thoughts are with you as you sew Caili's costumes. What an undertaking! I stopped sewing for my kids after they turned 3. It just got too hard!!!

Bethany - I totally get it! 350 and 450 are definitely similar in looks! However, I do think that you need to get with Kathy when she gets back! I'm so pleased that your friends diagnosis was so good!!!

Kathy - I think I may have missed you, but I hope you have a wonderful trip!!! Enjoy and relax!!!

Sheryl - I hope I didn't miss you, too! Please have a great trip!!! Enjoy yourself, and relax!!!

Ann - Glad your mom is doing well! You are making such wonderful memories for Luke and Emma! They will remember this and you will reap the rewards in your "old age."

Aimee - Glad you are recovering well! Take it easy with the fast food, ok??? Don't want to set your recovery back. I'm so glad that your DH got a job. Where is it, and what will he be doing?

Marilyn - Hope you are able to dig out of the snow!!! Take care!

Janice - Wow! An earthquake!!! Glad you are ok!!!

For everyone I missed, know that I am thinking about you and loving you with all my heart!

Becky - I wish I lived closer to you so I could crash your house at mealtime! Your food always looks so good!!

Laura - prayers continue - keep us posted!

Ann - that recipe sounds really yummy and easy. I'll definitely be putting that on my to do list.

Ellen - you have some long commutes just to get to a doctor. I hope this was just a check up and that you are okay.

Michelle - Nancy, as usual, has a gift with words. My MIL is not a pleasant person, and we rarely spend time around her anymore. She always favored my son over my daughter, which still is a big issue. My sister gets along very well with her and spends more time with her than my DH, my kids or me. Course, none of us care to be around my sister either. :rotfl:

Robin, sometimes its the tiny things that send us over the edge. That's how I am, big things I can handle.

Gretchen - prayers continue for Jessica. I too, wonder how Hailey is dealing. I'm keeping all of you in my prayers.

Maria - I hope you are feeling better.

Vickie - I hope the boy has a great time at his first school disco!!

Glynis - good to see you posting. I hope all the kiddos are healthy again.

My boss told me this morning to keep an eye on the weather and if it looks bad for me to head home. They're saying sleet for sure and possibly 1-3 inchs of snow where I live and around here people just have no clue on how to drive in that stuff. Not sure about dinner. We'll probably pull something out of the freezer.

Have I missed some thing ?

Are you sick ?

No, not sick, but I have a condition that I have to go for shots every 3-4 months. They really take it out of me for a few days though. Thanks for asking.
So excited for the boy. Sounds like a lot of fun.
Sorry to hear your nephew is still struggling.

Ann ~ I am so glad to hear that DM came out so good.

Kat & Sheryl ~ Have a great time. Safe travels my friends.

Aimee ~ I am so excited for you. Each day should just get better and better. And DH got a job. WHOOHOO!!! See things are looking up all around you.

Maria ~ I WILL be on the next plane. Just say the word!!! Prayers are being said and I am holding you both very close my friend.

Michelle ~ prayers for your neighbor.

Bethany ~ great news about your friend.

Wendie ~ my dear friend. Call if you need to talk.

Lauren ~ Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you. How is the closing on the house going?

Marilyn ~ <--------------------throwing you a rope my friend. Are you scooped out yet?

Gretchen ~ prayers are being said for Jessica. Please let us know how she is.

I am sorry!! I know I have missed a bunch of you but I need to run to a meeting so I will BBL.

I don't have many details, but Greg is having surgery tomorrow. He is having a lump removed from his neck. I don't think it is anything serious, but he does need general anesthesia. If you could spare a thought or prayer I would appreciate it!

I'm a little late, but I've said a prayer for Greg too.

Thanks for all of your kind words about my parents. It really is more their loss but it does make me sad for what Zachy is missing too. I'm planning on starting to take him to visit at a senior center and hope that he can develop a relationship with some of the people there. At the very least we'll spread some cheer.

That's a sweet idea. I'm sure he'll have more attention and affection there than he knows what to do with. I used to take Hailey when she was a baby to see my Great-Aunt in the nursing home. Those women used to light up just at the sight of a baby.

Plan is to go home Fri when DH gets off work. I could probably go home tomorrow but I'd be stuck home alone on Fri and my dogs are a little high maintenance so we decided it was best for me to stay. Doctor is more on the cautious side and wants me on full food for a few days anyways to make sure things are okay. I figure I met my deductible and it's 100% from here on out so why not stay :confused3

I agree. You take care of yourself first and if you can stand an extra day in the hospital, I think it is wise to stay there. Especially since you would be alone at home.

WFD - Takeout of some kind while we wind up the packing. I'll try and pop back in this evening but in case I can't I'll talk to y'all when I get back next week.

Hope you have a wonderful time!

Michelle, I am very lucky with my parents but my ILs are a whole other story. My ILs have never met my children or me for that matter. Some people are strange and I just can't understand it. :grouphug: I totally understand how you feel.

You know Ann, I thought of this when I got your Christmas photo. I saw those two beautiful children and wondered how in the world any grandparent could willingly turn their back on them. I know your parents more than make up for Ron's, but I know it still hurts.

UGH, I just got a call from Tom that an exterminator is coming here for a quote between 10 and 2...I have to shower and go pick up Riley before that...gotta jump in the shower. Why do men do things last minute??? BBL

Because they love to drive us crazy. ;) That's all I can come up with.

My mum is very much in the boys life but she does favour my nephew.

I agree, especially if it is obvious enough to upset Colin. You all deserve a vacation you can enjoy. Hard to do that when you want to strangle someone.

Glad to see you. I was worried your nieces/nephews had you hog-tied someplace and we might not hear from you in a while. ;) They are gone and your house is back to normal, isn't it?

Becky - I wish I lived closer to you so I could crash your house at mealtime! Your food always looks so good!!

:lmao: Isn't that the truth?!?

All I know today is that Jessica got out of surgery in the wee hours of the morning. She is in the surgical/trauma ICU and I don't know when they might be moving her to a step down unit. I'm planning on heading down to the hospital after work, if for no other reason than to get an update. I know they won't let me in to the ICU to see her, but I'm hoping to at least speak with her Dad to see what the doctors are thinking.

So tonight Kenny is on his own for dinner. Which probably means pizza for he and the kids. It certainly doesn't mean he'll actually try to cook.

 So sad.

Back in finance but with foreclosures. Should be plenty of business  :sad2:

Still waiting to hear how Greg is...

If you saw on FB, I'm home. We are getting major SNOW here - abt 5 inches so far and still pouring down. They think tomorrow will be pretty icy so it was best to get home today. I'm doing well. Just the adventure of driving home in the slush, getting lunch and a RX, and getting in the house was tiresome  My dogs did SO GOOD though. I was very non reactive when I came in so they didn't get too wound up. Harley my baby is curled up next to me in the chair like normal and all is well. They have loved playing in the snow and I can see it out the windows from my chair. Beautiful!

Tonight's dinner with be take out as I don't want to buy groceries for him to cook knowing people are planning to start bringing over meals.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and prayers. I finally heard from Greg and he is doing well. He is staying with friends tonight, so he won't be alone. I guess his doctors wanted him to have supervision for the next 24 hours. Greg seems to think whatever they removed is a cyst, but they still sent it in for testing. He'll get those results Tuesday. Again, thank you all!

Aimee -- I'm glad you made it home safely. Please rest!

Gretchen -- My prayers continue for Jessica.

Glynis -- I'm glad you survived the weekend!

Ellen -- Have fun tonight.

Well, now that I am not pacing around worrying, I guess I should figure out dinner. Then I can pour myself a glass of wine.

Oh Laura, I am so glad that everything is ok with Greg. You so deserve a glass or two of wine. Prayers were answered for sure.

Aimee, I am glad that you are going home, and that you are feeling better!

WFD: I think I am making chicken, pineapple, and jalepeno skewers with sweet chili dipping sauce, rice, and avocado-orange-red onion salad. Assuming that sounds good to John.

We really didn't get much. There might be two or three inches, but no more than that. That's fine with me

That's because that sucker hit the ocean and started rolling over us! :scared: When they showed the radar on the news it came to an abrupt halt and just rotated here.

Hoping to get to work for a little while tomorrow, I need to get out of the house.

Marilyn ~ <--------------------throwing you a rope my friend. Are you scooped out yet.

Actually it's not too bad today. Because we have a wind break from another set of townhouses in the neighborhood the snow isn't too bad in the parking lot. We do have some interesting drifts between cars and in yards though.

Laura Glad to hear Greg is doing well. Having stuff done away from home and family is hard.

Marilyn I am glad to hear you are thinking about getting out. I was wondering how you were doing.

Aimee Glad you are doing well and resting at home. This is a wild winter weather wise. I hope spring and summer are good times.

We are having pizza nice and easy. It is Library night.

Hey y'all,

Busy day with yucky weather. Little bits of sleet this afternoon. It wasn't cold enough to even stick but people still could not drive. I was late picking up Alexis because of it & then she burst into tears because I was late & another kid had thrown up on her coat! Ugh.

Laura, I will definitely being praying for Greg! That must be so difficult not knowing exactly what's going on. I'll be praying for you too.

Oh gosh A is crying now & I can't think. She's fine... I hurt her feelings telling her to quit climbing & wiggling on the barstools.

We won't be leaving for 2 more days. TGIF cause I haven't packed a thing!

Laura- glad to hear that Greg is doing well. Enjoy that glass (or two) of wine!

Aimee- It must feel good to be home, there's nothing like the love of a sweet dog cuddled up next to you to make you heal faster.

Gretchen- I'm still keeping Jessica in my prayers.

Ann- I can't believe your ILs haven't met their own grandchildren. That really breaks my heart.

All of you thank you so much for your kind words. I love my parents but also will do anything to keep my baby from being hurt down the line. Like Nancy and Vickie said he will eventually notice. Its such a hard situation.

Well Zachy woke up nice and early this morning with a huge head cold. Thankfully he's being less of a baby about it then when DH had his man-cold. Kind of ironic since he actually is a baby. But since he was so miserable all day I decided to make hotdogs for dinner to cheer him up. I also made spicy curry chickpeas for DH and I and Zachy ate my entire bowl of them.

Have a good night everyone!

Michelle, Sorry that Z is sick!

Aimee, So happy that you will be going home tomorrow! I know you are more than ready!

Gretchen, We are still praying for Jessica. Hoping she is doing alright.

Lauren, Thinking of you & praying for you!

Marilyn, I saw that firehouse fire on the news! I'm sorry but seeing it on tv somehow makes your descriptions more real, really scary stuff to me!! Prayers that you & all of you getting this storm are safe!

Janice, You amaze me, if I had to deal with the cold weather that you do, I can tell you there would be NO library "nights"! Library would be reserved for warm, summer nights. You are such a good Mom!!!

Maria, I really hope you are feeling better!

Dinner tonight was the scallops & warm tuscan beans. I didn't really pay attention to the recipe I saved! So we had seared scallops with warm tuscan beans served separately from the spinach. Although not as pretty it was still really yummy.

I have not packed a single thing yet!!!:scared1: I have tomorrow & Sat. to get packed. I really need to do some shopping for warm long sleeve shirts for myself too. That might not happen.

Thanks all. I have learned not to let my situation bother me to much anymore. Like Michelle the important thing is protecting the kids, and not let them be hurt. Just have a hard time understanding some peoples actions or lack of.

---------

I will most likely go to my parents to do their laundry today. Dinner will be either baked chicken or pork chops.

Have a great day.

Good morning!

Sheryl, have fun packing! I always end up doing it at the last minute too.

Michelle, I hope that Zachy is better today. I had a cold earlier this week and it only lasted five days...not bad, as colds go.

Gretchen, how is Jessica?

Well, John nixed my menu last night saying he wanted comfort food so I made sandwiches and we watched Whip It, since Aimee said she liked it on facebook recently. It was really funny and cute. The sandwiches were good too. Here is mine, seared sliced chicken with pepper bacon, carmelized onions, fontina, arugula and mango chutney on anadama bread:

And here is John's--this is the cover recipe from this month's bon apetit magazine--braised short ribs (I made those on my "snow day" Wednesday)with carmelized pickled onions, montery jack cheese, and arugula on my homemade bread:

Not sure wfd yet, we have to bring our car into the dealer in the city for some maintenance this morning (which is why I am still home!), so we might go out someplace...but maybe not since it is Valentine's weekend....might be too crowded.
