The What's For Dinner Thread - May '09(recipe index in OP)

I work in IKEA.

I work in storage.

I sell Billy book cases 5 days a week.

My big thing is to always tell folks to check the codes on the boxes.Ye dont want to get all the way home and have picked up the WRONG thing right ?

So theres no way on gods green earth would go to IKEA tonight and buy a Large Oak billy book case and small white door right ?

WRONG....Im thinkin its gonnae be a while before I live this one down !! :rotfl2:

:rotfl: I bought a small Billy bookcase! Got the right one, although when I opened the box here at home last night I had a moment of "did I get the right one?"

Glad you and Courtney are doing good. I always seem to be on the go. huh? I know...I can't sit still. I am not one for down time...if I ever take a nap during the day, it means I am sick.

I heard about that incident...I feel so bad for that family. That poor baby...I could cry.
Take it easy my friend...I will say a prayer that the aide situation works out.

Hey girl, I'm not saying you need to nap, just slow it down a bit!:goodvibes

This situation is very sad. The investigation is still ongoing, this is a very good neighborhood. Older homes but most are well kept & in good shape. My Mom, Aunt, Brother & DD are on 2 and 3 streets away from there! The police investigation is still ongoing, the neighborhood is not overrun with rats! So there are still lots of questions. It's just so awful & hard to even comprehend how this could happen. :sad1:

Sheryl- GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I hope the Bob gets this straightened out so that you all don;t have one more thing to deal with. Keep resting!

Becky- The kit that Welby has been using is Heron Bay and she gets them at a beer and wine hobbyist store. I will get you the info for the ones that we used yesterday. Three different manufacturers so we are keeping notes to see which we like the best. The kit was more money than the Heron Bay but she said that she got the wine kits for her wedding here and really, it is delicious! Making wine is not as fussy as making beer. I understand that it is more forgiving than crafting beer.

Laura- those socks were stinky! That room reeked so I think that at least one other girl had some lucky articles of clothing that had been spared the washer :lmao:

I made a summer chicken stew. It s a basic stew but I used more chunks of onion, carrots and summer squashes instead of winter veggies. I like it but Buddy is going to gag. I bought him nice fresh rolls so he can have his sandwiches :rotfl:

Thanks for the GRRRR!!! I love it that you get so mad for me!!!

I'm surprised Buddy won't like your stew. Is it the summer veggies or stew in general? Bob is grateful for days when I make stew, any kind of stew. I don't like it, so he rarely gets it.

Tomorrow night is Lamb chops. I have never fixed them before so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And please remember that I am not as gourmet as all of you, so make it easy. TIA

Got to get Sunday's bulletins ready. I'll BBL

Ellen, I like to marinate lamb chops it takes away that gamey taste. I usually use lemon juice. evoo, lots of chopped garlic and a greek, italian or lebanese seasoning, lots of herbs, (rosemary works well as Laura suggested ) salt and pepper. Then I grill them until med. rare. But since those were so pricey I would use a cooking method that is most comfortable for you. If you usually roast meat in the oven, do them that way, if you broil..etc. Good luck!

:Sheryl -- That is so sad about that baby. Just awful. I'm glad Courtney is recovering and you are too. Thoughts and prayers the aide situation works out for you. You don't need added stress!
.

It is awful.

Thanks for the prayers! Bob has told me not to think about it, he is handling it! Although he still didn't have an answer this evening.

Sheryl - I hope you are still kickin back and taking it easy.

1 Tango Orange wall,1 bright red wall and two the bluest of blue walls..oh yes and ALL glitter paint !! :cool2:
I dont know how he sleeps in there,my head hurts takin in the laundry !! :headache:

I'm tryin to kick back!

Oooohhh that does sound bright! You are a very, very good Mum!!!:thumbsup2 I don't think I could have gone for that!

I'm still wide awake, due to opening the mail this evening and seeing the insurance papers for my surgery! :headache: I don't know why we pay for medical insurance. They are supposed to cover 70% but they are paying only about 25%!!! "The charges exceed the allowable limit" Right so a carpal tunnel surgery & a discectomy, bone graft & fusion is supposed to cost only $4000! Yeah right in another world! Sorry I'm venting, but now I'll go take my meds & go to sleep. Night Y'all.

Sad sad sad :sad1:

*************

Buddy hates stew/ Years ago when his Dad was rushed to the hospital i got up at the crack of dawn to make meals before we all went to Mass. I made a beef stew, some kind of casserole and dessert. His sister told me "We don't eat stew." Okay, toss that sucker out then. Buddy ate it but I know now he hated it :lmao:

He was raised on meat and potato kind of meals. My mom made a lot of one pot meals so we are really different when looking for comfort food. I want soup and stews, casseroles and braised meals. He wants mashed potatoes, gravy, roasts, roasted chicken, and burgers and dogs :confused3 with sauerkraut, of course :thumbsup2 And then he never met a sandwich he did not like!

The highest one happened to be our friend's and it's as solid a deal as can be. He's an investor who's been doing this for over twenty years and knew as soon as he looked at it that the potential was unlimited. Still won't believe it until the check is in my hands.;)

I'm sorry y'all I haven't had anytime today to catch up, not sure when I can.:guilty:

I am so glad that this is working out! Don't worry about posting, just get through this week!

Nancy- We let the boy pick his colours for his room and boy did he run with it !!

1 Tango Orange wall,1 bright red wall and two the bluest of blue walls..oh yes and ALL glitter paint !! :cool2:

I dont know how he sleeps in there,my head hurts takin in the laundry !! :headache:

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

So far so nice here today! It was raining and really windy until about an hour ago and now it is beautiful! I am not sure what we will do for dinner, I want to go out but I think Buddy will want to stay in. Maybe Marisa adn I can go to a movie, then we will both be happy. He can watch TV (snooze in front of the TN) and I will be out :thumbsup2

Hi all, quick check-in ...I did not want anyone worried I did not check in yesterday! I do not know were my day went to, before I knew it was time to put everyone to bed.

Good news DSIL is finally home. It is spinal arthritis. She has Dr. appointments over the next couple of weeks with her GP, and a back specialist to plan a treatment method. They sent her home on Oxycontin and an anti-inflamatory. She sounded so much better just to be home. She was telling me alot of her increased pain was do to delays in receiving meds on time because of staffing issues. :confused3

I won't be one much today. My DM is cooking lunch for a couple of my brothers and I, it is kind of a Friday tradition. Whoever is in the area drops by. Todays menu is stuffed flounder, salad and corn on the cob! :cool1:
Then I need to get to Target for DIAPERS...looking forward to DS being potty trained and only buying one size diapers.

TGIF...have a great day all!!!

WFD- not sure depends on DH.

-----------------------------------------

Kathy, sending good thoughts and prayers that closing proceeds with M&D house. I was so thrilled for you to read that.

Ann- I am so glad that there is finally an answer for you SIL, now there can be treatment. Have fun at your Mom's today!

/
Morning Y'all,

I get to go out of the house today! :yay: Yes I know it's the dr, but it's still out of the house!

Ann, I'm glad you're SIL is home! That is good, but sad to hear she could have felt better a lot sooner if she had better care. I don't know anything about spinal athritis. I hope she has an excellent dr who can get it all under control.

Nan, I understand Buddy's aversion to stews. I'm just starting to eat them again. I thought I hated all stews, but now I've realized my Mom just didn't make very good stew!

Lauri, How are you feeling? You've been quiet lately.

Gotta run, have a good day!

Becky- this is the kind of store that we went to to get wine making kits. WE bout three different brands so I cannot remember which ones they were, althought they were all in the $100 range. I did not want to start with the "premier" brands that were almost twice as much.

http://www.beer-wine.com/index.asp

Welby has used Heron Bay products in the past.

ETA no matter how long the kits suggest you really need to at least double the time before bottling. Most people have said triple the time. Then depending on the variety you must let the wine stand, for instance the Ice wine or some reds really need at least 1 full year before you should drink them.

Quick fly by.......

Sheryl - enjoy getting out today!!!!!

Gotta get some work done, hit the gym, change cell subscriber then hopefully dinner out on Lake Pontchartrain with a huge Mai-Tai in hand!:cloud9:

bbl......

I'm still wide awake, due to opening the mail this evening and seeing the insurance papers for my surgery! :headache: I don't know why we pay for medical insurance. They are supposed to cover 70% but they are paying only about 25%!!!

Contest it. They are hoping that you won't go to the trouble and will just pay it.

Becky- this is the kind of store that we went to to get wine making kits.

Thanks! I am going to look into this.

Dinner last night ended up being omelets with roasted peppers, bacon, tomatoes, onions, spinach, and parsely. Well, John got an omelet. I completely broke mine when flipping it, so I ended up with vegetable egg scramble. It still tasted good!

Forgot to say: Kathy, I am so excited that you have a closing scheduled! It's great that it's a friend, and also someone with developing experience! Fingers crossed that all goes well.

...WFDT ~ Lamb chops. I do have the marinating and I think I will grill them - so wish me luck. Man oh man I hope they are good. I am really looking forward to them.....

Hello my friends,

Last night I made an asparagus, herb quiche for dinner & had a tossed salad.

I did tell him that if he wants to eat that stuff instead of my healthy stew and whole grain rice I was going to increase his life insurance :lmao:

I hope your nice weather makes its way here. It is miserable! I keep hearing crashes out on my deck from the wind knocking over my herbs. As if they needed more encouragement to give up and die.

Sheryl -- You must be feeling really cooped up if a trip to the doctor has you excited. I hope all is well.

Ann -- I'm happy to hear your SIL finally has some answers and is home. I hope they find a treatment plan soon. Enjoy your day!

We are having some kind of fish today...if I ever get myself going here. This weather is making me sleepy. I had a lot to accomplish today, and so far, I've managed to eat breakfast and catch up here. :rolleyes1

Well here is pre trip days and day one. If you aren't interested please go to the next post. I do warn you it is very wordy.

WDW 2009
June 15 - 24, 2009

Who: Me – Ellen
DH – Doug
DS – Matthew
DSGF – Ali

How this trip came about
We were NOT going to go to WDW this year. Just too many things that needed to be done around the farm, plus I just didn’t feel like I wanted to spend the money. We had gotten hit pretty hard with the Stock Markets falling and I was trying to be real cautious. Well you all know the saying – the best laid plans . . .LOL

So around the end of March, Matthew was asking when we were going to WDW. Um, sorry Son not this year. WHAT!!! He just couldn’t comprehend a summer without a trip to WDW in it. Now Doug and I have 3 children – Elizabeth (our oldest) loves Disney, Stephanie (our youngest daughter) likes Disney, but Matthew (our baby at 19) well, Matthew totally gets Disney. He is as much of a fanatic as Doug and I are. So a summer without Disney was not at all what he wanted to hear.

About 3 weeks later, he and Ali (his girlfriend of 4 ½ years and we love her like our own) sat Doug and I down at the kitchen table and pleaded with us to go to WDW. Well what was a Mother to do but say – OK. “But you and Ali have to buy your own park tickets.” They were fine with that – so the planning began. I also told them that we were going to go on the cheap. I thought that might do the trick but they were also fine with that and we called and made reservations at Pop Century. Plane tickets were the cheapest I have ever seen them, at $159.00 RT from Omaha. We decided on only 4 ADRs – Tony’s Town Square, Sci Fi, The Plaza and Tappen Edo. We opted for late lunches and this worked out real good for us. Finally at about 3 weeks before we were to leave I tried to get somewhat of a plan for the 10 days situated. I have no idea why, but this trip was the most laid back trip we have ever done.

Okay
Room reserved – Check.
ADR’s made – check
Park passed ordered – Check
Flights made – check

Now all we had to do was WAIT for the big day.

2 days before we left – Saturday, June 13th
Our Church has a Church Wide Garage Sale each year with all of the proceeds going to a very worthy cause. This year it was going to Doug and I for our Mission Trip to Panama. We are leaving 5 days after we get home from WDW. We had worked for the previous 2 weeks getting it all ready with a lot of help from the parishioners. We were up early to get everything ready to open at 8 am. We had a GREAT day and over $1000.00 went into our fund. We left a bit early, as we needed to be in Kearney to get our pre trip haircuts. Ali and I also got pedicures. We had to get back fast as we had a 70th birthday party to go to. We had a ball, but got home much later than we wanted to.

One day left – Sunday, June 14th
Up early, as we had Church. Doug was Liturgist and we had Bells to play. Went out to lunch with some friends and the hurried home to get the last of the packing finished, because at 5:00 we were going to a surprise 50th Birthday party for Ali’s Dad. Oh the fun we had – probably too much, but oh well, we were already in vacation mode. Home around 9 with a flurry of last minute things to do. Ali just stayed the night with us as we wanted to leave around 7 and going to pick her up is really out of our way. We were all finished around 11, but decided that we weren’t even close to being able to go to sleep so we played cards. The 4 of us have a running game of pitch going, and at the moment Doug and I are beating them. We played 2 games and decided it was time to go try to get some sleep whether we were tired or not.

Day One – Monday June 15th
WooHoo!!! The day is finally here. I know I didn’t get much sleep. I kept looking at the clock to see if it was time to get up yet. Finally at 5:30, I gave up and just got up. I went and made some coffee and hit the shower. When I got out Doug as sitting at the table drinking his first cup of coffee. We sat and talked about what the next 10 days were going to be like. We really didn’t think we would be going and we were so excited that we were. Doug got in the shower and I got the suitcases closed and by the front door ready to go into the car. At 6:30 I yelled upstairs and asked if anyone wanted to go to Disney World today? I hear these 2 little voices say – YES!! It sure didn’t take them too long to get ready. Doug and Matthew sailed through chores this morning in record time. They got the car loaded and we were finally pulling out of the driveway at 7:25. I had to stop at the bank and we were on the interstate at 7:45.
We drove to Grand Island (about 75 miles) for breakfast. Back on the road and got to Omaha about 2 ½ hours later. We parked the car in Long Term parking, grabbed the shuttle and was checking in about 15 minutes later. Got through Security ok, well all of us except Doug. I have no idea what it is, but that Man is stopped every time. He was behind me and I turned around to see where he was and they were wanding him. I thought the guy was getting a little friendly with him. When he finally got over to us he whispered to me, “Wow, I think I need a cigarette”. LOL The guy kept saying, “Oopps, sorry, oh sorry” OMG I just about died laughing. The kids just stared at us. We got to the gate with about an hour to spare. We sat and took silly pictures and just talked. We boarded early and we were in the air a good 20 minutes early. This is great – I am off to my Happy Place. We landed in Detroit at 4:30 and had just enough time for a bathroom break and to our gate. We left at 5:20. Next stop Walt Disney World. Mickey, here we come!!!
We landed about 15 minutes early and I saw my first Palm tree and knew I had arrived. We took the Monorail over and got our luggage. We headed over to Magical Express and checked in. This is the first time we had used this and I was a bit skeptical about it. But remember we are on the cheap this year so Magical Express it was. We waited about 20 minutes and finally boarded a bus to just sit there. I kept fidgeting and Doug kept saying to sit still. There was the cutest little girl sitting behind us and she kept asking her Mommy how much longer was it going to be. Her Mommy just kept saying, “Not much longer.” I finally turned around and said. “That is what you said 15 minutes ago”. The whole bus clapped. I was so embarrassed but REALLY, come on. We sat on that bus for 45 minutes before we left. But the bus driver did say that Pop Century would be the first drop off. YEA!! It was pitch black by the time we got to the Resort. It looked so pretty when we pulled up with all of the lights on. I was just glad to get there. We had checked in on line so I was looking for the desk and found it to be full, so I was waiting when another CM helped me. I had requested a room in the 50’s or the 70’s and when I asked him if it was granted, I know he laughed at me. Well of course we were stuck in the farthest building there was. I have yet to have any of my requests ever granted. Oh well we were here.
We dropped our luggage off in the room and headed for the Food Court. We were starving. Except for the peanuts, cookies and pop we had on the plane we hadn’t eaten much since breakfast. We bought a new refillable mug and we brought our 3 Pop Century mugs with us. Matthew got a Cheeseburger, Doug got the Salmon, I got the Parmesan Chicken and Ali got a noodle bowl. We didn’t even talk until we were finished we were that hungry. I don’t think any of us could believe we were really here. It just amazes me how you can wake up in Nebraska and a few short hours later be in Florida. I love flying!! We sat and talked for a bit and slowly went back to the room. We got all unpacked and the suitcases put away. Okay now I feel better!! LOL We all got ready for the next day and one by one fell asleep. Not me, I was wide awake. The room was hot, my pillow was huge and hard as a rock and the light from the alarm was like a strobe light. But I was happy – I was here!

I swear Doug and Buddy are long lost twins. Listening to your stories is my life completely!! Someday we need to get together my friend.

Janice ~ You are in Illinois right? Have you been getting these terrible storms? Wow the last 2 nights have been horrible here in Nebraska. If so hang on - they are a coming again today.

I think it is a farm boy thing :lmao:My husband is a country boy, no getting around that :rotfl:!
*************

I am embarrassed that I have been whining about weather here, i know that you all have had some devastating storms your way.

Well here is pre trip days and day one. If you aren't interested please go to the next post. I do warn you it is very wordy.

You make me see this trip unfold! Keep talking girl!

Okay, we have the two samples of Kady's paint choices on the walls, two coats. She thinks she is going to go with her first choice and I think that she is right. It's funny, she knew pretty much exactly what she wanted.

I have ordered her a blue and white seashell bedding set to go with her 'Ocean" theme. I also ordered the butterfly daybed set and some matching pillows that will be in sometime in September. I want to give her a "sitting" room as well as a bedroom, she shares so much space with Nola that I need to give her a place to get away, especially if she wants a friend to visit.

Maria- when is Lily going to the eye dr?

Kathy -- I am so glad this is such a solid deal. I know you're still holding your breath until the 4th, but I hope you're planning a celebration.
My realtor and I both said we're going out and kick back a few...:drinking1 immediately following the closing!
