The What's For Dinner Thread - May '09(recipe index in OP)

Hey Y'all,

:grouphug: This is for all the :cool1: & :yay: and good thoughts over my dr's visit. Y'all are great!

I did go out for dinner it was okay, a nearby italian rest. Although DH's van is not nearly as comfortable as DD's car. By the time we reached the rest. I was already hurting.:sad1: So that bummed me out because I had big ideas of getting out of the house today.

Laura, That flounder dinner sounds delicous! :thumbsup2

Laura & Becky, I know the Liam Sisters & family will have a fun weekend with lots of good food!:goodvibes

Vicki, Boys will be boys! :goodvibes

Ann, Sounds like a great day! Have fun!

Janice, I hope your weather improves, so you can enjoy grilling those steaks!

Lauri, I'm glad you are feeling so good!

Aimee, Glad you had a good day off, you deserve it! We get those Round Robin commercials but we don't have any around here. Bob gets mad seeing them because the burgers look so yummy!

Kat, I know the upcoming months are going to be hard! Just remember you can always call me for support. I know how hard it is to see your only child go off to LSU.

Nan, I'm sorry y'all dinner out wasn't a good one! Your dinner & cocktails on the patio has me thinking of doing the same. I should be able to have a one little cocktail since I've been off the pain meds for almost a week!!!

Many, many of you -bless your hearts - have asked about sending Jay cards and care packages.

I finally have his address if you would like it please PM me. I don't want to post it here as it is a Public board but I will be more than happy to share it with you if you PM me.

All things are welcome. Cards, baby wipes, jerkey, magazines, gum, videos etc. Any and everything is appreciated.

Let me know.

I have Ethan today as Elizabeth is in Kerarney. We are going to bake cookies. So I have got to run. Wow, does he keep my busy - I love it!!!

WFDT~ Grilled pork Chops, Sweet potatoes and a green salad

Hi, everyone! I didn't get on yesterday....too busy!

Here in Utah, we celebrate the 24th of July, as the day the pioneers entered Utah in 1847. It's a huge deal, here with parades, etc. It's like another 4th of July. Anyway, my neighbor and I decided to host an impromptu neighborhood get together in the common area behind our houses. We frantically sent emails around, and then spent the rest of the day getting ready. I made ranch potato salad, cinnamon fluff, sour cream cucumbers, and marshmallow brownies. At 7:30 we all gathered. It was so fun! There were about 10 families that came. We grilled burgers and hot dogs, Alan made homemade root beer, and we just gabbed. The kids wolfed down their food, and then played games in the common area! It was great to hear their laughter!

At dusk, we pulled out lawn chairs, and watched the men shoot off fireworks. It was really a spectacular show! The kids loved it, and I thought Timothy was going to jump up and run, he was so excited by it all! Darling!

After the fireworks, we watched "Kung Fu Panda" projected on the back wall of my neighbor's house. It was so fun to see the kids all cuddled up in their blankets on the grass. We passed out brownies, cookies and licorice to everyone, and settled back to enjoy the movie. What a great day! I just love my neighborhood! My neighbor Carol commented that she and I produced a great party on just one day's notice. Imagine what we could do with more time invested!!! Next year!

Today, we're just kind of lazing around the house. Katie has a birthday party this afternoon, and I think this evening we might take the kids to a drive-in movie. We'll see. We're just happy there's nowhere pressing that we have to be.

Dinner tonight will likely be something on the run. If not, I'll make a chicken salad. We'll see!

Glynis, I think that the best parties are impromptu, it seems that it worked well for all of you! I wish my neighborhood was like that.

I am cleaning and while I look at it as a lick and a promise, it is going to have to do.

When we tell him to get our nose, he now grabs it and then expects us to say "beep beep" too cute!

That's just too stinking cute!:goodvibes

I am also going to make cocktails to enjoy on the porch before dinner and maybe some Nuvo or Rosa after.

That sounds wonderful.....:cloud9:

Again, you paint another perfect picture. It just doesn't get any better than that!:thumbsup2

Hello all. Just here catching up. Took my DN's to see G-Force and dinner at Pei-Wei, then did a little shopping. Tomorrow my sister and I are going to see Harry Potter.

Went to 5 Below and found these mesh sling chairs that are used with a pool noodle for $3. My cousin had some and she and I would float in the pool for hours in them but they disappeared sometime over the winter. We have both looked everywhere for them. :yay:

I want to live in your neighborhood!!

Today was busy! Met up with friends this morning to hit the Wisteria outlet (www.wisteria.com) and Sam Moon (discount purses/jewelry/etc). Had lunch at PF Changs in the middle of our spree and had a good time.

This afternoon/evening was a lake day at some church member's home - I don't "do" lakes but it was shady and not so hot under their trees (it was 102 here today!!). The kids had a blast. The couple made burgers for everyone, which were tasty!

Good Rainy Morning All! Yes, it is rainy again today. Thunder and lightening and rain during the night and coming again this afternoon. Right now it is muggy and overcast.

Sheryl- I am so glad that you are well enough to enjoy a cocktail!
Aimee- I see how hot it is down there, I hope that folks are not getting sick.

Dinner last night did not happen......I reminded Buddy to take at least one of the propane tanks to be refilled and he was a little feisty, he knew he needed to refill it  So cleaned and did laundry all day, scrubbed the porch and washed and disinfected the toys that Marisa picked up for Nola.....took a shower and then asked my DH, who had napped on the chair for a few hours, to light the grill. You guessed it....no gas :rolleyes1

Dinner was eggs for him. Chicken stew and brown rice for me. We did enjoy the watermelon martinis posted here. YUMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!

I have to pick up something for this evening. I have chicken for grilling but I am not going to stand in the rain, I'll turn it into chicken salad. Maybe that will be dinner.

Kady never got to see the movie Thursday night. The station oversold the sneak peek tickets by 200 people! She was disappointed but did not let it show because her little friend was almost in tears. Anyway, Kady has a date with her Uncle Donny this afternoon to see it and I think that Marisa and I are going to see the Proposal. I also want to get a pedi today, my tootsie are a disgrace!

Vent- Marisa told me that some parents wer crazy mad at the theater. I understand being angry that your child was upset but taking it out on the movie help by using foul and offensive language is :sad2:. One lady lost it completely and threatened the poor ticket takers and then used language that would make your hair curl in front of a lobby filled with children.

Nancy I just heard on the news about the weather you all have. What is going on with our weather this year?
Those parents need to see a video of themselves. What example are they giving their children? Yell scream and embrass all around you so you can get what you want?

No clue yet on dinner I just finished breakfast and I don't want to think today :rotfl:

Morning Y'all,

I don't know what's for dinner! I think I definitely overdid it on Friday. Yesterday I stayed home & did little so maybe I feel better today. We had a movie night with the Mummy & the Day the Earth Stood Still.

Nan, I didn't bother with cocktails, but I did have a small glass of red wine. :goodvibes Sorry Kady couldn't get in the movie. It's sad the way some people behave.

Glynis, I REALLY want to live in your neighborhood! My goodness your descriptions made me feel as if I were there & now I want to be!:goodvibes

Aimee, Glad you had a good day! Try to stay in the shade or the AC!

Ellen, I hope Ethan didn't wear you out! Even if he did I know you enjoyed it! :goodvibes When I'm able to do all my shopping again, I'll have to get Jay's address & send him some goodies.

I will go to church & then maybe lunch out if I feel up to it.

Y'all have a good one.

Kathy I was just watching the Cubs game when one of the LSU coaches came on to sing during the 7 inning stretch. :rotfl2:

Before I forget look what I found on the budget board https://www.pfchangs.com/account/
You can sign up for 10% off your bill through 2009 It is their version of a dining card :cool1:

I'm such a regular there, they sent me one...:sad2:

Dangit I wanted to see that, I got busy in the kitchen making a Hot Fudge Pudding Cake. Got the recipe from another thread, if it's good I'll post it! Hopefully I can see Coach on the news singing.:goodvibes

:rolleyes1 Buddy. Sounds like something my DH would do!

I'm sorry Kady didn't get to see the movie. I hate when places oversell things! I know they are doing in to get a full theater/plane/etc but it sure does disappoint a lot of people in the longrun.

DH is going to a minor league baseball game tonight with his old colleagues. I declined. It's hot outside! I will sit at home in the AC. I'm trying to do more liquid diet from now on in order to make that prep easier so I will probably just have tomato soup.

Mommas - thoughts please :goodvibes This morning, one of my smallest toddlers was hit in Sunday school twice by the same little boy. She's precious, and just recently moved into that room. She's an only child, no cousins, never been to daycare or another church nursery. Mom and dad are sweet but slightly overprotective. These kids are just turning 2, which as you know is prime time for biting, hitting, pushing, etc as they don't talk much. Little boy sat in time out for two minutes and she was comforted. I spoke to mom and dad several times between SS and worship and after worship about the incident and how it was handled. I also told them that this age doesn't talk so they respond with physical actions - it's a normal behavior, but not acceptable (though I'm afraid they read that as 'it's normal so get over it'). The SS teachers told them she was fine, it was just a passing incident, etc.

Well, after worship they ran into the wife of one of the SS teachers in that room and dad unloaded on her about that 'kid in that room who beat up his daughter, and something needed to be done about that kid' and things were not okay and she had a mark. They had to point it out to this woman, evidently she has a little red mark on her cheek and we think he just scratched her in the process. She's very light skinned.

SS teacher is going to call them since he was in the room and saw the incident. I'm not sure what else to do. They are toddlers... there is nothing wrong with the little boy who hit her because she wouldn't give him a toy he wanted. It's perfectly normal behavior for a child that age. She is just fine. This is a new experience for them, and she is their pride and joy, and they don't understand normal child development. I didn't dare tell them that biting is also common at this age

Should I call mom halfway through the week to see if things are okay? Or should I let the SS teacher speak with them and see how that goes? I fear that I didn't act like it was serious enough at the time - I explained what happened, apologized, and told them how it was handled but this is just a normal everyday behavior for that age group that I didn't treat it as gravely as they did. I'm worried they thought I was flippant about it. :sad1: I also wonder if they will consult their parents on the incident and perhaps one of the moms will speak up about the normal development at this age and talk them off a cliff.

Any words of wisdom?

Hey,

Glynis - Your bit sounds great.I love you all spend time with your neighbours.Where I live used to be like that but our bit has become quite a commuter town and lots of city folks have moved out here.

City folks just dont mix the same as us country bumpkins !! :confused3:laughing:

I had an awesome weekend !!

Scotland is havin a year of " Home Coming " events in 09.

Basically trying to get 2nd and 3rd generation Scots from all over the world to visit the home land.

This weekend was The Gathering, the biggest ever gathering of clan societies and we went along on saturday.

The main event was in Holyrood park at the bottom of Arthurs seat (Arthurs Seat is a volcano right in the centre of Edinburgh) so the setting its self was brilliant.

There was Highland games, pipe bands and highland dancers from all over the world.

All the Clans had tents where you could go and find out about your Clan, tartan and coat of arms.

The day finished with all the Clans walking up the Royal Mile from Holyrood to Edinburgh castle.

Now...Im not usually into all this shenanigans but it was pretty impressive and the bairns LOVED it.

I have some pic's if any one would like to see.

Then today we went back in but this time to climb Arthurs Seat.

I tell you what it some climb....

But the sun was shining,we took our time and had an absolute blast.

Running up bits, rolling down others and just havin fun with ma kin folks....it doesn't get much better.

Hope youse fine lassies have a great evening....V xx

Vickie- Pictures pictures pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kat- the cake look so good! Can you tell me if it holds up if baked a little early? Kady wants to make a dessert for Buddy and we are thinking blueberry pie, but this sounds like a nice chocolate cake she can make until i pick BB's again

Sheryl- take your time trying to get back to normal! Rest now an you wilol not pay later

Janice- the weather is crazy this year. It is thundering now and raining. Thunder has been rumbling all day long, was storming early this morning and the weather forecast only has one dry day this week. :sad2:

Aimee- I really have no advice. I think that kids are kids and that it takes time to teach little ones proper behavior. Some parents just fly off the handle, and I think this parent overreacted. :sad2:Maybe some of the younger Mom's here have more to offer, I think you handled it correctly.

Dinner was good. I made my version of a Bertucci dish a friend had a few years ago. WW rotini, sauce was a bruchetta with a lot of garlic and basil and wilted spinich, topped with a good Peccarino Romano cheese. I used a rotisserie chicken as the protein. We also had garlic bread and salad. watermelon martinis to start.

This dish was served as a cold salad and topped with grilled chicken. OI have served it at room temp, it is still really good!

Nan- I think the cake would hold very well. I wish someone would get over here and stop me from eating it..........:rolleyes1
