The What's For Dinner Thread - March '11 (recipe index in OP)

Hi Ladies - just popping in really quick -

Maybe you should have a NOLA Dis meet there. :thumbsup2 I've been once, so good and boy were we stuffed afterwards.

Marilyn – Thanks for the idea of a NOLA DIS meet at Melting Pot!!!:thumbsup2

Hmm - that sounds like a really good idea!!

Some of you mighe have seen that I posted on facebook that a bunch of food trucks have started operating around my office. I am very excited about this! Today I went to the vegetarian truck and got an eggplant sandwich. It was so good I took a picture:

Not bad for $5. Of course, then I sent the picture to John, so he sent me a picture of HIS lunch:

Always one-upping me, that wise guy! :laughing: :rotfl:

No offense Becky, but I'll take John's lunch over yours any day!!

I am at Elizabeth's this morning. Her and Jay have gone into Kearney for a Dr. appt. She is going for a Gestiational Diabetes test. She has to fast for 12 hours then drink 8 oz. of gluclose water. I think all of the testing they do now days is such overkill but afterall what do I know. I really thinks it makes the Mother/parents worry about things WAY too much, but again what do I know. :confused3

I wouldn't worry too much. Sara had to do this test, but her sugar was running high. She passed the test, but Matt has stayed on her about the sweets.

Quick flyby here! WE are leaving tomorrow morning for Myrtle Beach. I just want to let you all know that yesterday Donny suffered a grand mal seizure at work. He has been seizure free for about 7 years and has not needed meds for about 3. He is fine today and has scheduled appointments with his Dr's. at least I know that he is seeing his PCP. The neurologist is tougher.

Thats rough - I hope he's okay. Have a great trip.

Out of time - I see lots of new people - will need to come back say hi - gotta run for now!

No not a steelers fan... I am more of a college football fan... but I do like the ravens and the cowboys, I am from Texas....

That's good. :rotfl:

For right now I am a Ravens and high school fan. I have one godson who plays in high school and he has a brother who is in college but he is red shirted for this year. I will have to pay more attention to college once he starts playing. :rolleyes1 Unfortunately for us he plays for a Christian college in Kansas and doesn't play anywhere close to here, we will have to go there for any of his games. I am hopeful that one of his little brothers gets a scholarship and plays for the U of MD. I want to "Fear the Turtle" :rotfl:

Thank God that his employer insists that management keep up on emergency procedures so his boss knew exactly what to do.

I will check in this week but I am not good at posting on my new phione so I will ask Marisa to keep up here.

Take care all!

Oh honey. What a way to start of your vacay!

:hug: for you and Donny.

Have a wonderful and RELAXING time!

Thank goodness for his employer. Seizures are scary things. I hope they found out why he is getting them again. :hug:

Try to have fun on your trip

We are turning into ducks here. It has been raining since Sunday night. I am pretty sure the ground has taken in all the moisture it wants. I scheduled some stuff for my lawn that they can only do when it is dry. Of course this would have been welcome after they were done. I am having the lawn aerated and them to put down some more grass seed.

Dinner last night was clean out the frig night. I am thinking of stir fry something for tonight.

I volunteer to take your rain.

Jen – The crockpot chicken sounds so good, recipe please? You really do live in a small town…no McDonald’s? Good luck to Tooter today!

UncleR says this is her recipe:

One chicken, coated in bunches of garlic powder, salt and pepper. Peeled carrots, turnips, onions and potatoes.

Put it all in the crockpot. Set it and forget it.

It is soooo good.

Jen - I remember when the town I grew up in got it's first stoplight, and shortly after that, a McDonald's! It was a huge time for our small town! I remember walking to the McDonald's after Jr. High and ordering fries and a hot fudge sundae. It tasted so good, then!

:lmao:

All 10 people in town will be waiting in the parking lot when McD's opens.

Hi everyone.... :wave2:

I have not read thru all 187 pages but I wanted to pop in and see what it is all about.

Just some background on me....
Married, grown kids, DH and I cook everynight of the week and most weekends.
and we are always looking for something new to try.

So I hope I found the right place?

Can anyone give me a brief on the rules for posting here? Do I just list what we are having and the recipe, do I include pictures and a review after we try it?

Hi! :wave:

I'm Jen. I'm newly married to fellow DISer Uncle Remus.

We have a 15 y.o. son, J, and my cognitively disabled BIL, Big C, also lives with us.

And we love to eat. :teeth:

Howdy, all!

Today I am making kinky spaghetti and meatballs. Anyone remember that? It's a blast from the past :-)

In the spirit of my cooking challenge, does anyone have a fried pie recipe they'd like to share with me?

Kinky spaghetti?

I must have this recipe.

Sadly, the car he wanted was sold before we got there - it was a Chevy Traverse. He was pretty bummed. We are back to the drawing board...

I am seeing the doc today for another followup. Still not breathing well so we'll see what he says. Tonight's church so dinner is :confused3

Sorry about the car. Hope things work out soon.

And please, PLEASE get to feeling better soon. Let us know what the doc said.

:rotfl:
WFD: maybe nothing, after our big lunches!!

Both of your lunches look ahhhhhmazing!

Food is a competition in this house too. :lmao:

Last year, UncleR and I had an Iron Chef lasagna bake-off. She won. :rolleyes1

For dinner tonight we are having a pork loin with honey mustard glaze, green beans, and mashed potatoes.... now all of this is subject to change once I get home but we shall see....

I will post results later.

:lovestruc

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, Tooter was spayed today. And they took out her bad eye. She'll get to come home in the morning. I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight without her sleeping on my head.
:lmao:
Tonight's dinner is Aimee's sour cream chicken enchiladas. They're baking now. I'll take pics and post them later. They sure do smell good!
Hope everyone has a great Thursday!
WFD is my version of Mongolian beef. I am using the basic recipe but adding chicken and adding snap peas and spinach leaves. I only had a little piece of sirloin left and a bunch of veggies that needed to be used up
Jen Come and pick up this rain and bring it back with you:headache: We are sprouting gills here. The weather just said more rain coming probably through the weekend. Poor little Tooter, She? is going to be a little peeved with you for taking her parts.:sad2:
:rotfl2:
Jen those enchiladas sounded so good when they were originally posted. I hope your little puppy is OK. :hug:
She's a kitty. :goodvibes And she's the furry love of my life. :lovestruc
They are SOOOOOO good. I highly recommend them. I ate 4! :scared1:
I want gills.
She is going to be pissed. She was VERY vocal this morning because she couldn't eat after about 9 last night, and no water either. And she was letting me know she was none too happy about it. :lmao:
~~~~~~~~~~~

Here they are. :cloud9:

Hands down, the BEST sour cream enchiladas I've ever had.

I roasted my own tomatillos, so I don't know how they'd be with the canned, but they were amazing. UncleR has promised to love me for life. ;)

Thank you to my dear, long lost sister, Aimee. :teeth:

/
I'm all for THAT...as far as the table....:rolleyes1 Let's just say we won't be eating off of it anytime soon. The cat is still sleeping on the rug under the table.

Nancy - Have a Great time in Myrtle Beach!

Janice - Hope you don't float away!

Becky - what wonderful looking sandwiches!

Glynis - perhaps you should pick up a life jacket for Janice too!

I don't even notice those things because everything in my house is Disney! :lmao: But thank you. the other one is Mickey Mouse!

Welcome! Haven't I seen you somewhere before? :scratchin

:rotfl2:

Lindsay - What is kinky pasta?

Lori - Have a great time at HHI and F&W, I'm only a little behind you!

Aimee - sorry about the car. :hug:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WFD? I'm going out to an Oktoberfest at Disneyland and staying over night in the Villas at the Grand Californian!!! :cool1:
I think we have meet somewhere before...not sure. Maybe.
There are RULES for this thread????? :scared1:
:scratchin Don't I know you from somewhere....or is that just the bacon clouding my memory banks?
I will be at the F&WF is 4 days... does that count!
Only if you bring back serious food and wine food porn.
Would you adopt me PLEASE?????????:yay::yay::yay:
Get in line! I've been trying to get adopted for the last 18 months now.
Well everyone....I had the feeling that the snakes and spiders wouldn't go down well on this thread...but as I've been told before...POST! POST! POST!. If it's any consolation, I did hang on to those pictures for 4 or 5 days before deciding to put them up. I accept that I love looking at all kinds of animals and will have to admit that DS and I spent over an hour just looking at the snakes and frogs on this zoo visit. For some reason, all the reptiles were particularly active so there was lots to see and admire.
There has been a distinct lack of kitchen activity in my place for the last week. I've been really busy.....relaxing on my staycation and am hoping to not have to worry about cooking till Saturday. Not that it's a chore because I so enjoy cooking but I'm in such a holiday frame of mind that I just want to relax.
So...onwards with the Royal Melbourne Show, which is equivalent to your State Fairs. Alison has seen these before but I think you'll enjoy these better than my visit to the zoo. Coming up next....
Let me warn you now.....there are a LOT of pictures!
Royal Melbourne Show 2011
If it's September in Melbourne, it means spring, school holidays, Aussie Rules football finals and the Royal Melbourne Show. The Royal Melbourne Show is an annual event that has been held since 1848. Billed as "bringing the country to the city", this event includes animals & livestock, food & wine, arts & crafts, carnival rides, showbags, free live entertainment, fireworks and more!
It is held over 11 days, coinciding with the spring school holidays, at the Melbourne Showgrounds - over 19 hectares of indoor/outdoor space, all within 7 km of the CBD or a 10 minute train ride out.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow010.jpg
For the RMS, the showgrounds look a lot like this:
2011September25RoyalMelbShow006.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow041.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow009.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2220.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow159.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow030.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2003.jpg
I attended the show over 2 days; so you might see a variety of weather in my shots....from brilliant sunshine and blue sky on the first day; overcast, rain and wind on the second day. Typical Melbourne weather!
(Continued from Previous Post)
Bringing the country to the city folk means livestock. I love animals of all kinds so the RMS is a fantastic way of reminding myself that if life were different, I am NOT cut out to be a farmer. :lmao:
The usual suspects are always around....goats, sheep, alpaca, pigs, cows chickens....There are a number of 'sheds' where the livestock can be found.
The biggest one....
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2245.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2247.jpg
is for the cows, goats...
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2243.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2246.jpg
No toddler tiaras in sight....but the intention is the same.
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2248.jpg
There is another shed just for alpaca and chooks...
2011September25RoyalMelbShow172.jpg
We used to have these Bantams in the backyard when I was growing up....
2011September25RoyalMelbShow176.jpg
...and these Silkies.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow174.jpg
The favourite shed with the kids is the animal nursery...it's just a big barn where some of the animals are allowed to just roam through out the barn. Kids and adults allowed to pet them!
2011September25RoyalMelbShow158.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow160.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow162.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow216.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2189.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2190.jpg
And there are always younglings around...the baby was born the day before this picture was taken.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow214.jpg
If you're very lucky, the sheep will pose for you!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2191.jpg
(Continued from Previous Post)
The domestic animals are also there....
DH and I always go look at the cats. I think we may have settled on a breed of cat that we will want for our next animal.....the Bengal. Has a pelt, not fur! Now we just need to agree on the colour....
2011September25RoyalMelbShow150.jpg
or the silver version.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow152.jpg
The dogs are constantly on show....outside..
2011September25RoyalMelbShow154.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow177.jpg
...and inside.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow180.jpg
Each dog gets a space like this....
2011September25RoyalMelbShow179.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow178.jpg
Pretty comfortable digs for them; particularly when their human pets bring blankets from home.
For those of you horsey minded, I also did the rounds with the equines.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow132.jpg
Their type of parading is a little bit more up my alley...love the equestrian events!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2072.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2074.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2079.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2095.jpg
That big shed in the back is the shed for the cows and goats.
Never fear....humans are not to be outdone either....
Daredevil motor cycle riders.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow081.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow089.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow096.jpg
....and more in keeping with the Show....wood choppers. How much wood can a woodchop chop if a woodchop chop could chop wood?? Well, as much as it takes for a battalion of volunteers to clean up!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2196.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2199.jpg
The shows that I enjoy the most combine both humans and animals....
Animal wranglers...
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2136.jpg
...always pick a child to help them open this box from the audience...
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2140.jpg
....out of the box of Babes!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2142.jpg
Never fear! The bacon is always collected safely!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2150.jpg
Its a real cow.....and a real cowboy....no bull!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2156.jpg
One last smile for the audience...
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2155.jpg
And they ride off into the sunset....er....stage left!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2161.jpg
(yes...that is a bull he's riding this time!)
Leaving someone to clean up the mess behind them.
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2252.jpg
The other animal/human show I caught was Frisbee Dogs.
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2097.jpg
I didn't take that many pictures...of carnival rides. But there was all that you would normally expect of an event like this.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow001.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow139.jpg
Including a water drop...themed around pirates!
2011September25RoyalMelbShow140.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow029.jpg
I made the effort to head back the second day specifically to hit the equivalent of the Haunted Mansion. Horrorwood Mansion! I needed to get some pictures for the scavenger hunt!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2010.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2008.jpg
I was told that no photography was allowed; all bags to be left at the gate. But when they saw my camera around my neck, they told me to take it inside because they didn't want to have the liability of something like that lying around! I took that as permission to do flashless photography. It's a walkthrough about 10 rooms or so....all awfully dark; so a lot of times, I couldn't even take a picture even if I had tried!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2045.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2046.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2225.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2227.jpg
There are live actors in there; all Horror villians! This one turned out quite well and will nicely fit one of the hunt categories!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2226.jpg
And outside the horrorwood mansion?
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2221.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2222.jpg
I was quite pleased with the horror set. :thumbsup2
Anyone hungry yet?
This is the inside of the food pavillion. Yes, there are LOADS of food sellers outside and all around the 19 hectares....but the best food is usually found inside the food pavillion.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow034.jpg
There are also the normal food traders around.....lots of stands and stalls....very little table sitting space.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow052.jpg
Given that I'd just attended the Taste of Melbourne and taken heaps of food porn, I was pretty restrained inside the pavillion. I limited myself to the targetted scav hunt items...
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2050.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2054.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2060.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2070.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow053.jpg
....and food that we ate. :teeth:
Best deal in the house. A toasted cheese sandwich was $2.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow037.jpg
Brazilian picanha. So good!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2233.jpg
Paella!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2231.jpg
Seafood...
2011September25RoyalMelbShow047.jpg
and chicken and chorizo.
2011September25RoyalMelbShow048.jpg
Crepes!
2011September25RoyalMelbShow046.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2249.jpg
They didn't hand out cutlery with the crepes...so I didn't look very elegant scoffing this down!
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2250.jpg
Dutch poffertjes are cooked like this...
2011September25RoyalMelbShow049.jpg
resulting in...
2011September25RoyalMelbShow050.jpg
Waffles!
2011September25RoyalMelbShow061.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2064.jpg
And no show is complete without devonshire tea and scones cooked by the Country Women's Association!
2011September25RoyalMelbShow197.jpg
(Continued in Next Post)
(Continued from Previous Post)
The Show is also a place to showcase craft! Cake decorating, quilting (I thought of Marilyn when I was looking at these), embroidery, cake making, photography, painting....the list is endless....and every category is open to all and sundry.
Here are some of what I saw......
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2012.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2017.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2014.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2029.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2030.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2032.jpg
2011September27RoyalMelbShowD2031.jpg
And the Show is NOT complete without showbags. This pavillion is NUTS!
2011September25RoyalMelbShow199.jpg
....and in the bags for $$$$!
2011September25RoyalMelbShow204.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow200.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow206.jpg
2011September25RoyalMelbShow209.jpg
Hope you enjoyed the Show! I certainly did.
If there is a next time....DH and I agree....time to do the show at night!
princess::upsidedow
Very nice Pio! Your "Country Fair" is much nicer than the fairs I've been to. Cleaner, more things to look at and much better food.
The most special thing we have at our county fair is deep fried Oreos that are made by a county High School Booster Club. :rotfl:
School's closed so I am at work early. Didn't get to sleep until really late and I am soooooo sleepy. Hoping I can get stuff done and go home early.
PIO - Thanks for sharing your pics. I enjoyed seeing everything!:thumbsup2
Lauri U – It’s good to see you posting again, I’ve missed you!!!!!
Jen – Tell Uncle R I said thanks for the recipe! I’m glad Tooter will be home today.:hug:
WFD - PW's beef stew with mushrooms, egg noodles and oven roasted carrots.
