The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

Hi All!

I am all caught up and hope that I do npt miss anyone

Ann! Welcome Home! I loved your TR and have a wonderful vision of Luke entertaining the four teens! Disney and little one = :cloud9:

Sheryl- I am so glad that Angelina is feeling better. I know she was disappointed that there was some pain, I would want it all gone too.

Kay- Wonderful house news! Praying that this one is the charm :wizard:
Also, I am glad that you heard from Wendie, I have no idea how she has managed this past year, it must be overwhelming

Bethany- Don't listen to anyone who wants to rain on your parade! Do what sounds right for you!

Peggy- trips are a nice diversion but I agree with Bethany, you would rather have your furry friend and be home.

JC2- hey! You aren't leaving now are you????? We are just getting to know you so stay and post often.

Gretchen- prayers continuing for your Dad. Don't worry about cooking or anything else for that matter. It will all wait. How is Sweet Hailey doing? She seems to be so intuitive and must sense your sadness.

Dinner last night was grilled pork chops, mashed potatoes with no gravy (I heard about that),steamed broccoli, corn, and a green salad.

Tonight is chicken soup. I also have some chicken simmering in gravy and mashed potatoes for Buddy. Kady cannot have it because it was the leftover curried chicken which has some butter.

Kat, Thanks for keeping us updated with Wendie! Let her know we are thinking & praying for her and her Dad. Tell her again she doesn't have to keep up, we need to take care of her right now. She doesn't need to take care of us!! Send her my love & prayers.

Peggy, I've never heard of any of those places. :confused3 Check with the girls on the Nola thread.

Since we lost our Smokey 3 years ago, I decided not to get another dog. He was special & I know he can't be replaced. I also can't handle evacuation again with an old sick pet, it was just too stressful. So far now we are pet free.

DH agrees with all of you about eventually being petfree. He said once our Gordon Setter passes that is it. It was just so hard to deal with the passing of our last dog, already 4 months.:sad1:

There has been so much illness in everyones family lately. Hugs, prayers, and strength being sent to all of you.:grouphug: Poor Wendie, we are thinking of you. And like everyone has said no need to catch up just stop by for compassion and distraction when needed, we miss you.

My DM just called and said my Aunt was going to the hospital for chest pains.
So her and Dad are off to be with her. It is such a gloomy rainy day here, looks like DS & I will be taking an afternoon nap.

Maria, please post orchid photos. I would love to see them.

So it started out as a beautiful morning, now it's pouring.

Sheryl- Your post "sounded" really happy. I'm sure it's frustrating for her though, a couple of years ago the ladder my husband was standing on broke and he thought the minute the cast came off he'd be back to normal. Nope. She's home already? I needed a new battery this weekend too, but for my car. I just took my mom's car instead, she's not here anyway. I'll worry about the battery later.

Nancy- I have started not to make gravy on purpose just to see if it gets a comment. Sure they taste awsome with gravy, but you know what, sometimes I just don't feel like making twenty different things.

So my parents have 2 houses, one in the town I live in and one where I grew up. They never use the one I grew up in so they are finally selling it, after living there 40 years. Anyway, they have a very interested buyer so I'm going up for the last time patriot's week (MA school spring vacation) for a couple of days. I still have things there that I don't even remember. So here's the question part:
Do you think chicken parm would freeze well if I made alot tonight? My husband is staying home, he has to work, and litterally needs to set a timer to make ramen noodles. I'm trying to come up with ways to keep him fed and my house still standing. I'm only going to be gone 3 or 4 days, but he really needs to learn to fend for himself.

Ann, thanks for the trip report! It sounds like you had fun despite the crowds.

Here are pictures. Friday night I made cocktails--this is a kaluha colada. It tasted like ice cream.

Robin -- I've frozen a lot of things like meatballs, lasagna and stuffed shells, but I've never tried chicken parmesan. Maybe someone else knows.

Beck -- Why aren't you at the doctor? I see your light on...

I heard from Wendie yesterday. Poor girl has SO much going on. Her Dad has stage 3 colon cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes and will be having 6 months of chemo. Yesterday was her Mom's birthday.:sad1:She feels like it would be impossible to just jump back in and figure out what's going in with us. I told her we don't expect her to know what's going on with us, we just want her to come back home so that we can comfort her.:grouphug:

Do we need to mail you some jars of gravy so that child can get her gravy fix? ;)

I forgot to post dinner. I am hoping the rain will be gone and I can light the grill, going to make salmon and asparagus on there. I'll also have some angel hair pasta with it.

Maria- I forgot to ask you to post teh orchids. I would love to see them. How are you feeling lately?

:lmao::lmao:

First--------------are you supposed to be at the Dr young Lady???????? Hmmmmmmm????

Second- how on Earth do you two stay so slim? If I ate that wonderful food I would be as happy as a clam but I would be the size of one of those giant clams I see on TV ;)

Ann, Prayers for your Aunt. :flower3:

Becky, Yum, Yum & YUM!! :worship: What a spread Laura had for her birthday! I soo want to be a liam sister! ;)

Becky, Tell me about this coconut curried corn sauce! Was it as good as it looks? if so recipe please!

and listen to your Sisters, Get Thee to the doctor!

Robin, You think I sounded happy? Well, yeah I guess I am! :)I think I'm just really relieved that Angelina's surgery is over & that she isn't in too much pain. She only took tylenol this morning & that was for a headache! So I think she is doing amazingly well. She is discouraged though, I asked her when her follow up appt was so that I could write it on my calendar. She wondered why. I had to tell her to go check her post-op info, that she can't drive until after the appt. She wasn't very happy about that. But that tells me she is really feeling pretty darn good!

Becky Just how many people do you cook for? That food looks like it could feed a small army. How do you make the Kalhua colada?

Happy Monday, everyone! Today is a beautiful spring day here! The daffodils are blooming, and the grass needs mowing! Yeah!!! We are supposed to get a storm on Wednesday, but they're saying only rain. I'll believe that when it happens!

Dinner tonight will be Chicken risotto, or as Katie named it, "Chicken Rice". She went through a period where she loved the book "Chicken Soup with Rice." However, when I made her chicken soup with rice, she hated it. So, we came up with this risotto.

I have to run! Hope everyone has a good day! My prayers and pixie dust are with you all!

I am so excited DH just picked up our mail that was held while we were away. My DM sent me the Food Network Magazine as a surprise!!!I have not read it all yet but so far I think I am going to really like it!!!!

This weather is so miserable to come back to. Rain, rain go away!!!!

I'm very jealous! I really want to get this magazine! I think I'll ask Alan to get me a subscription for our anniversary in May! Cross your fingers!

Wow, that is great! I hope her recovery continues to go well.

 We had the same experience here with Liam. However, I have not found a suitable replacement food.

Becky Just how many people do you cook for? That food looks like it could feed a small army.
 Six adults...five if my brother is working. She does always make too much! It drives my mom crazy.

It seems like the rain has stopped here. There was a scary moment at the school this afternoon. I was waiting in the drop-off/pick-up loop, and all the kids had come out of the school and were waiting. It was pouring rain, so they were all drenched. Suddenly, there was a bright flash of light followed by a huge boom of thunder. The kids all screamed and ran back into the school. No one was hurt, thankfully, but everyone was a bit shaken. Maybe the school will come up with a better plan for what to do when there is bad weather.

I had the leftover meatballs, Liam had leftover sausage, and Caili had leftover fried chicken. You're going to hear a lot about leftovers here this week.

She went through a period where she loved the book "Chicken Soup with Rice."

I have that book in my classroom. One of my girls loves it. (It's the same author, Maurice Sendak, of Where the Wild Things Are) EVERY DAY she reads me the August poem. (WHY August? :confused3)

It goes:
In August it will be so hot
I will become a cooking pot
Cooking soup of course-why not?
Cooking once, cooking twice
Cooking chicken soup with rice

The first time she read it to me she's like "You're going to be so hot this summer! It's HOT in summer!" No lie...:scared:

Here's a link for all 12 months of Chicken Soup with Rice. I like February and March also. http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Chicken-Soup-With-Rice-lyrics-Carole-King/34EA6D70D9A2E1D9482570D9002A5803

April is poetry month! :lovestruc
