Precious is based on a book. My ds14 read it in class with a wonderful teacher who made an effort to open the eyes and hearts of all her students.. sadly she died at the beginning of Christmas break this school year, coroner listed cause as "unknown" as she was a healthy young (40) woman.
I have the movie on my Netflix list, hoping by summer it will be available and maybe both my DS will be ready to watch it. Worried about my 14 yo for awhile, but he has adjusted well.
I agree about school lunch, the boys make their own lunches because to me they are too expensive and just gross! My sis read that there are groups trying to change school lunch guidelines, make it healthier food and change the calorie counts. The school lunch program is suppose to provide 1/3 of child's daily calories at a very low cost point.. which is why they have lots of high fat, high carb items.. cheap food, abundance of calories.. just plain nasty food!
At my dh's school, all of the meals are made off site and trucked in to be reheated at the school. He said it looks disgusting. I feel bad for his students because 85% are free lunch, no brown baggers there.
They do have one student in middle school that has kidney disease, the parents wouldn't provide him a renal diet lunch and the nurse said he couldn't eat anything on school menu.. too salty, too high in phosphorus and potassium. One of the teachers volunteered to pack him a healthy lunch.
He should be listed with UNOS for transplant but his parents are non-compliant for his care... didn't show up to sign papers to get him listed. It's so sad and unfair.
There was a big court case last summer where a family refused chemo for their son's highly treatable cancer, citing religious beliefs and using natural methods. Eventually the court said they had to do chemo or lose custody of the child.
Yet, here we have a child declining in health, his parents say "he's in charge of his own illness" (he's only 12!!) and his doctors haven't called it in as medical neglect. And really, it is!! They can stave off complete failure for years if they followed diet and meds. Or at least get him listed or find a family donor..
