The Ultimate Stomach Bug @ Disney Thread

We just got back this evening and DH got the bug too! We spent the day in the room yesterday. He was still not feeling great as we flew home today. Thankfully we didn't have much planned for yesterday anyway.

Sorry you were sick.It has been down there for several weeks. Many of the other boards have huge threads devoted to the noro virus. It actually is pretty much all over the USA.I know here in PA we have had a lot of people in the ED with it.My advice to all is WASH WASH WASH your hands with soap and water, use friction , and wash for as long as it takes to sing the alphabet song.

Silly question - Do you rub and rinse as long as it takes to sing the alphabet song, or wash that long and rinse that long (so you do the song twice)?

Just got back & we're still feeling yucky. DH & I both came down with a gastrointestinal "thing" after just 1 night in Disney...first him, then me. Upon arrival, I cleaned the room with Lysol & Clorox wipes, plus we had anti-microbial hand soap. I don't know for sure, but I think it may have been after our dinner at Biergarten (our fave buffet restaurant). But, we also rode many rides & rode the Disney buses, so anything ride/attraction could have held the culprit. We're very healthy people that NEVER get sick (we're also AP holders that have stayed & played at WDW many times this year w/o any problems), so it was a little disappointing to be so ill on our "romantic" vacation.

Remember, the bug that we're all talking about is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibacterials do NOTHING to kill the virus. Not the hand soap, not the wipes. The only thing that works against this type of virus is soap & water, or bleach. While the antibacterials may be a good idea for some purposes, they won't help with the Norwalk or the norovirus.

So sorry so many of you got sick; we're going right after the New Year, and hope that it will have died off by then! :worship:

We are here right now...got here on 12/14 and things were great until DH started to feel "icky" at about 4pm on the 21st. The worst thing about this was that it was our 12th anniversary!!! We had dinner at Narcoossee's and the poor guy ate very little! Then just as me and DD were getting dessert served he excused himself to the restroom. He said his stomach was really upset and hit the bathroom several times in the next hour. Now...we had a Wishes Cruise booked to celebrate our anniversary and I kept telling him we should cancel and maybe even find a family to give our cruise to. But...since it was our anniversary he said we "needed" to go. So...he survived the whole cruise and then like it was choreographed the vomitting started at the last firework...right over the side of the boat into the Seven Seas Lagoon! Poor guy! Me and DD stuck him in a cab back to Saratoga Springs (one of the 3 resorts that this virus is reported to be the worst at) since we thought that was the quickest way back...vs. taking the monorail to the MK and then a bus to SS. Needless to say he has been in bed ALL day today. He said he is feeling better, the vomitting has stopped but the diarrhea is still there and it's been rough and he wishes this on no-one.

Let's hope we make it home tomorrow!!!

I am so sorry for all of you that got sick. I sure hope, the stomach bug is not going around as much in January.

The norovirus can survive heat and freezing temps and can survive bleach. It is passed through uncooked vegatables or feces which you can see why kids pass it after going to the bathroom and not washing hands. It can also be passed through water that has feces. There isn't a whole lot you can do to prevent it. Wash your hands throughly but if someone has touched something they made your salad with you can't do anything about it. The other thing that you have to think about with buffets is that people hold the tongs/spoons and then drop them back in the food (sometimes the handle is in the food) If there is feces on the spoon handle because hands weren't washed or they touched something infected it is now in the food.... That is why it is important to wash your hands and teach kids how to wash hands good!!!

OMGoodness Ditto on this one!!! :scared1:

2) If it is like what my DH had, a sip of water made him vomit. So, start with ice. (A healthy person can get ice from the ice machine in the resort or food court)

Be careful of ice... this can also have the norovirus... it can survive in freezing temps and ice is really dirty. Sometimes ice is how it is spread

I'm really scared now. Going January 21-27 and I am terrified and I mean TERRIFIED of throwing up.

We got it; we there from 12/14 to 12/20. Middle DD was down and out Thursday through Saturday and now DS has it. We all have had a touch of it..

The stomach virus is undoubtedly everywhere that there are people, larger crouds of people make contact with you more possible.

MY DOCS CAME TODAY!!!!! yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaawwwww:banana:

"The best way to avoid spreading Norovirus is to wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before fixing or eating food," said Dr. Monroe. "People can prevent spreading the virus by limiting contact while they're sick with symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea."

There is no treatment for Norovirus, although most people get better in one or two days and suffer no long-term health effects. It is important that people avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids.

Other steps to prevent the spread of these illnesses:

--Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces, such as bathroom fixtures and toys, with a bleach-based cleaner or other disinfectant.

--Immediately remove and wash clothing and linens with soap and hot water after being soiled.

--Avoid preparing food or caring for others if you have diarrhea or vomiting.

We didn't use any anti-bacterial items- DH is a med school graduate, so we know that won't kill the really bad stuff. We had hospital-strength anti-microbial cleansers; they kill microbes, viruses, fungus, & bacteria. We also washed our hands with microbial soap constantly- especially before eating anything & after any restroom trips.

I third the posters who said they hope it is gone by January! That said, I have seen a number of posts like this before prior trips and we have never gotten a stomach bug, and we eat at plenty of buffets. (Then again, we also stay offsite and drive a rental car...)

Someone posted a thread recently about what would be your "deal breaker" to stop going to Disney and I have to say, I think this would be it for us.

We were there this same week, the 14th -19th and we are all fine. I have an 8 yr. old and a 6 yr old and I tried keeping hands washed and sanitized, we ate at plenty of buffets, and stayed at AKL. Saw no vomiting masses of people until we were in a restroom in GA on the way home. Whew. Sorry for those of you that had to deal with this. It was pretty crowded there, compared to last year.

We were there the 7th thru the 14th and we saw the beginnings of the virus. We were at Wishes on the 13th and in all that large crowd, a child began throwing up right in the middle of the crowd and the parent then hurried the child over to the edge of the railing at the garden in front of the Castle. So, there was this child throwing up and exposing everyone around them. I was glad to be leaving as it began to show up, but we were still exposed, we got home on Sunday night, and DD threw up Monday am at 6:00, even with trying to avoid getting sick one of us got sick.

We just left WDW Friday morning, after being there almost 3 weeks. We stayed at FW, ate at buffets twice (Trail's End) and toured all 4 parks many times, riding just about everything. Aside from me having a scratchy throat (that a few days of AirBorne seemed to clear up) and a sinus issue that DH gets EVERY time we go to Florida (huh?) we were both totally fine.

That being said, we tried our best not to touch handles, doors, railings, etc., ...even ride bars (yes you CAN lower a lap bar with your arms! <LOL>) and I carried hand sanitizer with us which we used frequently. We also try to remember not to touch our faces with our hands, just in case. And speaking of hands... we washed ours - a lot! Especially before eating.

So don't panic, folks. Take as many precautions as you can - rest and eat well, take your vitamins (if you're a vitamin person), drink plenty of water and most importantly... WASH-YOUR-HANDS! :thumbsup2

YIKES!!!! We are going down Saturday for a week!!! And the rest of our group over 80 people will be down on the 30th...... We are dancing at Downtown disney the first lets pray our girls dont get sick!!!

Does alcohol do anything to this virus? The reason I ask is because the Bath & Bodyworks antibacterial hand gel is 60% alcohol. We're going to use it and hope for the best!
