The Ultimate Stomach Bug @ Disney Thread

Some stuff I pulled - basically, bleach for surfaces, aggresive soap and water handwashing for people.

"Norovirus is rapidly killed by chlorine-based disinfectants, but because the virus particle does not have a lipid envelope, it is less susceptible to alcohols and detergents.

Prevention of foodborne norovirus disease is based on the provision of safe food and water. Noroviruses are relatively resistant to environmental challenge: they are able to survive freezing, temperatures as high as 60°C, and have even been associated with illness after being steamed in shellfish. Moreover, noroviruses can survive in up to 10 ppm chlorine, well in excess of levels routinely present in public water systems.

Despite these features, it is likely that relatively simple measures, such as correct handling of cold foods, strict hand washing after using the bathroom and before handling food items, and paid sick leave, may substantially reduce foodborne transmission of noroviruses.

Prevention of norovirus disease spread via droplets from vomitus (person to person transmission) should focus on methods to limit transmission including isolation precautions (e.g., cohort sick patients in a healthcare facility) and environmental disinfection.

Quaternary ammonium compounds are often used for sanitizing food preparation surfaces or disinfecting large surfaces (e.g., countertops and floors). However, because noroviruses are non-enveloped virus particles, most quaternary ammonium compounds (which act by disrupting viral envelopes) do not have significant activity against them.

Phenolic-based disinfectants (lysol) have been shown to be active against noroviruses in the laboratory. However, this activity may require concentrations 2- to 4-fold higher than manufacturer recommendations for routine use.

Heat disinfection (i.e., pasteurization to 60°C (140°F)) has been suggested, and used successfully under laboratory conditions, for items that cannot be subjected to chemical disinfectants such as chlorine bleach."

We just got back from a great trip to Disney. I have to say I was a bit nervous about reading the threads before we went. I had read about the horrible crowds and of course, the stomach bug. We arrived on Thursday at AKL, which I have to say I LOVE! We had very managable crowds on Thursday night and Friday. We were able to get on Toy Story Mania in Hollywood studios Friday night with a 25 minute wait. Saturday, things went down hill. It was very busy in my opinion. We went to Epcot in the morning, went back to the pool to swim, and then went to MK on Saturday night. I thought Saturday night was pretty busy. We were on the way back to the resort and I had both kids sound asleep in my lap. I just took some time to thank God for such a great trip. We truly had a great time. No one was sick, it wasn't insanely busy, and we had a lot of fun. Anyway about 2 am it hit. The vomiting. It was horrible. It only hit two of us. We were both sick the whole way home in the car. We just had the stomach bug in November, so I thought we would be good to go. Anyway as we were leaving I saw and spoke to the family staying next door to us. They had the bug too. I stopped and told house keeping to please clean our room really good for the next family coming in. She told me that she had 4 reports of the virus just that morning alone. Don't worry yourself sick about it if you are on the way to Disney, just be prepared that it is going around.

IT must be everywhere because it is ripping through our house here in NJ .

To the poster who asked, you lather and scrub your hands for the length of the ABC song, than rinse.Hand sanitizers are not totally ineffective. If you are faced with the choice of not washing or using hand sanitizer...obviously use the sanitizer.I see alot of people incorrectly using the sanitizer too.you need ti rub it all over your hands vigourously till it drys.I see many people wipe once than dry their hands on a towel or their pants.

Thanks for that link - I just ordered them, too! It'll be easier to bring the wipes than the Clorox Cleanup I was going to take!

This is a downer kind of post, but one of the quickest ways for a stomach virus to be spread at Disney is on the characters. Especially at a character breakfast, or in a meet & greet line.

Think of Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, pretty much any character with a huge plastic head. Many people whose young children have the virus bring them to the parks anyway, and when those kids meet the characters they grab the noses, whiskers, ears, etc. of the characters (using fingers pretty recently in their mouths). They kiss the character's faces, leaving pretty infectious saliva on poor Mickey's nose.

Then Mickey goes to the next table (or is greeted by the next child on line), who then immediately does the same combination of touching and kissing. Generally there's only a few seconds between each child's character interaction -- not even enough time for a particularly wet kiss to dry. (EEEEW!)

It's direct contact, and it's the fastest way for these lousy stomach illnesses to spread.

I was reading a TR earlier describing a child with a stomach virus vomiting at their seat at during their character breakfast, and then remaining to meet all the characters just a few minutes later. I felt awful for the poor child, but I couldn't help also feeling equally awful for all the other children further down the line from the one who was sick, since they all probably got a good dose of the virus from their Mickey hugs.

(And just think of the poor people wearing those costumes, by the way -- they must have immune systems of steel by now!)

I'm sorry - but the parents of that child should have been told to take him/her back to their room. Seriously - who wants to eat with someone vomiting and spreading germs all over the place!!!!

Yes, yes, yes! I don't know why this should be news to people. Our daughter knows this is a no-no and now with the baby, we have had to forcibly pull him away from characters (while in our arms) who want to kiss him. Yuck!

Excellent reminder - I see lots of characters kissing adults and kids alike (there are a few photos in this thread) and although it might be cute, it's yucky! We don't kiss on the mouth in our household, so I don't want a character to do it to us at all!

I must say this makes me feel ridiculously lucky. We were there 14-19 and the worst I suffered was a bit of a sinus infection. (Since my job requires me to talk loudly, slowly, and clearly for eight and a half hours a day, I've now lost my voice after four days at home.)

We did see someone running into the bathroom at Tony's Town Square the
14th at MVMCP, so...

I'm a germaphobe but I have a tiny bladder so I was in and out of bathrooms constantly. I feel really blessed to have survived.

So sorry for those of you who were sick!

Sometimes it's worth the kisses on the mouth!

What is happening at WDW right now is what is happening EVERYWHERE! I teach 3rd grade and this is the time of year when it hits!

The weather has gotten cold, people are inside more = more germs passing. It was passing through my classroom last week. So, when all of those people/kids are in new places touching/breathing, they take the grossness with them - even to Disney!

Sorry for your touch of the grossness! Best health wishes to all!!

We just got back today. DD began throwing up at 6am on Sunday and threw up once more at 8am. By late afternoon she was feeling better, thank goodness. Looking back, she didn't eat much on Saturday so I'm guessing that is when she began coming down with it. I'm grateful that DH and I didn't come down with it too. We were staying at POFQ by the way.

Does alcohol do anything to this virus? The reason I ask is because the Bath & Bodyworks antibacterial hand gel is 60% alcohol. We're going to use it and hope for the best!

I don't know about the hand gel, but I think drinking the alcohol might work.:drinking1 We were there 12/6-12/13 and enjoyed many adult beverages. Didn't get sick at all.:ssst:

There are always TONS of bugs at WDW. Not because it's not cleanly... I am sure we can all agree that CMs are very good at keeping the park clean. But there are just too many people there, from all over the country and world, who are out of their element, most of them travel in germ incubators (aka airplanes), lots of kids around who aren't the cleanest demographic, etc.

Every year, my one cold or flu I get is always at WDW.

Merged these threads on Disney and the stomach bug.

Same here, got back Friday night 12/19. Did not get sick and did not see anyone get sick. I WAS sick here at home with the stomach bug the week of 12/6 though and was thanking my lucky stars that I was getting it before leaving on the 13th.
