The "Two Week Notice" - Just a Formality?

I say do what you have to. My company fires people if they suspect you are going to a competitor. Besides, trust me, most companies aren't loyal to employees any more.

I wouldn't do it on purpose, but if I had to quit with NO NOTICE to take a job I wanted, I would.

This is what I was thinking. It really all depends on where you work. I know at one of my DH's job, as soon as you gave notice -- they immediately have security escort you to your desk and you leave the property. The 2 weeks means nothing -- you would be unemployed for the time between jobs.

On the other hand, it could be a good thing depending on the company. I know I gave my notice at the company I was in before quitting. There was nothing in the handbook but they were a good company. On the other hand, the job I had been working at previously through college, etc... (who always said they wanted to hire me full-time) as soon as I was available full-time I told them and since they couldn't hire me then, I told them I was looking -- they gave ME a 2-week notice. I hadn't told them I wanted to quit as I didn't even have a job then. It would have been better for me to have kept my mouth shut and not even let them know I wanted full-time work.
