The Running Thread - 2021

I am reading and digesting everything you wrote, which is incredibly helpful -- THANK YOU!

I admit that this is breaking my brain a bit. I've wanted to train at faster than my target pace, on the theory that I will be slower at longer distances. But I do feel like I've overexerted myself (last week I was EXHAUSTED all day after a run, which is why I started paying more attention to HR).

I will try running at a slower pace, and if I can't be disciplined about keeping my speed down, try run/walk.

Thanks again!!

Training slow to race fast isn't intuitive but I promise you it works. I started to really look into this in 2018 and did some research on it and since then have been running much slower most of the time. I went by heart rate at first and it was painfully slow to run with my heart rate around 140 but after giving it a few years I'm now running almost 3:00/mile faster than I was at that same heart rate.

I recommend Primal Endurance which talks about not only the slower training concept but also about how diet will influence your ability to run faster longer. If you can burn fat insted of glucose at higher speeds (which is what the real benefit of running faster with a lower heart rate is) you can run longer races faster.

30km des Rives de Boucherville, 5k race report

Background and race organization

In August, I asked DD if she was going to do a second triathlon in 2021 and she said that she preferred to concentrate on running. A race from a local series suddenly appeared, and we signed up.

I had the privilege to talk to the race director (he answered my online question by “call me!”) two days prior. Between that conversation and the emails he published before and after the race, we understand that: They were allowed by health authorities to host events with more than 25 people in July, knew it was too late to order anything but decided to put together the best event they could because they knew runners needed to get back into races. They were nervous (so many constraints) and excited. Kudos to all who helped, it was great!

After exactly 20 months since my last race (runDisney Marathon 2020), I was so anticipating the starting line. Unfortunately, a small injury made it so that I had to take it easy because of my upcoming marathon. DD was therefore going to race in front of me.

Race morning
Weather forecast was 70% rain so we prepared for the worst and brought every change of clothes and shoes we could. It was really dark grey when we left the house.

We entered the event hosting area, after presenting our compulsory vaccination passport. We picked up our bibs and received a surprise, T-shirts from previous years and various events were given out. DD and I lucked out with very nice ones.

We sent a picture of us in our new T-shirts to my mom. She replied that she was sending us the sun and BAM! suddenly it shows up as we read her text. Of course the one thing I had not brought was sunscreen.

It took me a good while to figure out how to best attach my bib to my hydration belt. Better with time to spare before a 5k than before my goal marathon in three weeks.

DD (yes, she is 13 years old) explained to me the plan for the morning:
9:45 Eat snack
10:15 Porta-potty stop
10:20 Warm up for 10 minutes
10:30 Walk to start area
10:45 Start race

Go!
I left DD behind a row of Elite that are all a foot taller than her and took my place between the 25min and the 30min pacers, determined to take it reasonably slow to preserve my legs for my upcoming marathon. I put my phone in my pocket. Not surprisingly, after the start, the pictures, the excitement, I am shoulder to shoulder to the 25 min pacer, super comfortable. He turns to see who is around and there is only one other person and me. He says, sorry, we have 15s of advance after the first km. So then I understand, at a 4min45s/km pace, my brain and legs naturally concluded that they were there to do what they were trained for (my 5k training pace is 4:40). I stayed with the pacer to prevent myself from exaggerating any more. I slightly picked up the pace in the last 200m, not even sprinting. I did beat my official PR by 2s even though I was really not trying to. I am glad I did because that race shows how much I improved over the last years. I am 2/50 on my age group!

As for DD, she also started too fast at 3:50 on her first km. Adjusted her pace at around 4:30 for the next 3k. And sprinted at the end for an average 4:10 last km. She came in first female overall with a 22:08 time. What a wonderful learning and self confidence experience she had! I am beyond impressed by her as a runner, she knows how to manage her energy, her expectations, her mental state like not many other athletes.

After the race
We walked back to the event hosting area, which is separate from the course due to restrictions. We had to take a medal from a table. They were all from other events so we choose the shiniest ones 🏅 Then we took a lunch bag and left to find a park bench to eat it.

Even though the event was not what it would have been in normal times, it was our first in so long and it was the best for so many reasons. I cannot say enough how grateful we are to the organizers, volunteers and other runners who decided to make it happen.

@flav Great racing by both of you. It’s such an inventive idea by the organizers to use t-shirts and medals from other events! They get rid of stock and you still get some swag with a funny story!

22 miler in the books - now taper time for the Boston Virtual Marathon. :cool1:

I sprained my ankle 30 minutes into my peak long run yesterday while training for this. Grrrr. I was running on a trail. I will stick to paved surfaces for the rest of training so that will be fine, but I haven't decided if I should try to adjust my taper.

Oh nooooo! Not again?! I’m so sorry. 😩

As you've seen, there are a LOT of us run-walkers here, so you're going to get a lot of support and NO judgment whatsoever! Due to some health issues, I literally cannot run continuously more than maybe 1/2 a mile, but using run/walk intervals, I've completed Dopey 3 times and 5 marathons. Run/walk is the only way I can do this.

If it is recommended, how do folks track their run/walk time when the intervals are so dang short? Just constantly look at a stopwatch? Use some other app? Count in your head and get so used to it that you just have an internal clock for it?
I listen to music from my iPhone when I run, so I use an app on my phone for intervals. I started with free Runkeeper, which works great, but switched to iSmoothRun for some of its more advanced features. Both allow you to play music (or podcasts) and the app's voice will break in to say "run" or "walk" based on whatever intervals you set up. I also have my app remind me when it's time for nutrition, tell me my time/distance/avg pace every 1/2 mile, and it tracks my shoe mileage.

How does this work on race day? I'd be afraid I'd get run down by the folks behind me if I'm constantly changing pace.
At WDW especially, you'll find most of the field is doing run/walk intervals; you will not be alone. But this is why it's important to start in a corral that mostly matches your overall pace - you won't be mowed down by the 6:00/mi runners if you start with the 12:00/mi runners. I generally prefer to start at the back of a corral because it gives me more space over the first mile or so: more space to do my own intervals and pace without getting stuck behind bunches of people slower than me, and more space to not be in the way of people moving faster behind me. Raising an arm in the air to signal when you're about to change from run to walk is very, very helpful to people behind you, and trying to stay to one side or the other leaves the middle more clear for faster folks to move through. And I suggest a mindset of being okay with needing to skip some intervals here and there - rather than spend time and energy weaving through slower people for a short stretch, just walk through a couple run intervals, or if a short open space opens up, skip a walk or two to enjoy a little running stretch. Be flexible and it's all very easy!

I appreciate everybody's advice over the past week!

I went out with a much slower pace for my long run this weekend, and definitely felt better for it. It was brutally hot -- 82 when I started, and 90 by the time I finished -- so I adjusted my time even slower to about 16 minutes of continuous running, and ended up trimming my route to 7 miles instead of the planned 9. Other than water breaks I was able to keep a fairly consistent pace and felt pretty great the next day.

I've got a real training plan now, focused on slow and consistent conditioning and then pre-race taper. I feel a lot more confident about getting through the next 16 weeks and across the finish line.

I definitely appreciate all the advice and support! <3

Happiness is realizing a week and a half before a marathon that your less used shoes have 425km on them … And celebrate Fall with putting a new pair in rotation. Meet Jafar, the shoe at the bottom of this picture. He will add to the Vilains.

And here I thought I was possibly being excessive considering a 3rd pair of running shoes 😂😂

Can't find the picture at the moment, but at one time I had 19 pairs of shoes going through some stages of use. These are old pics from over the last nine years. I can't even fathom how many pairs I've gone through over the last 13,000 or so miles. Some lasting as little as 150 miles (Saucony Kinvara) and others as much as 1000 miles (Nike Next%). Can't say I name mine though @flav. Mine are just numbered on the back.

Nice! I think the most shoes I’ve ever had going at one time was 5. And I give my shoes nicknames too. But my shoe nicknames are more along the lines phrase, such as: On the Road to Victory (an Eagles show when Nike and the NFL collaborated giving every team a show), Cloud 9 (a blue and white color shoe), Trail Fire (my trail shoe which which are brown and orange) & Dopey Quest (the shoe I wore for the Dopey Challenge).
