The Running Thread - 2016

THANK GOODNESS for semi-annual sales at my local running store. The Ghost is not to outrageous and often are on sale but the Glycerins are stupid expensive!

I feel your pain. Most high end running shoes are stupid expensive, which is why I stock up at sales at my local store too, as well as at expos and online sales from Running Warehouse or Amazon. I also use http://www.shoekicker.com, a mobile-friendly site which scours the Interwebs to find the lowest price on a particular model.

Keep an eye out on a number of online sites, too. If you're willing to stick with the previous model, Glycerins can be found at relatively reasonable prices (50-60% of retail). The last three pairs I have purchased have been $70 each. Just be prepared not to be too picky about the color.

Wow, over 40 pages since I last checked in. Can't catch up, so I am going to try to jump back in from here.

Life got crazy busy for a while and I ended up with an unfortunate injury. Most annoying part is the injury was not from running, but has me completely out of running. I was moving a bed in a very awkward position where I had to lift it, but remain bent over because of a low ceiling. I got a bad (possibly torn) high hamstring strain. Its been a month and I still can't run. Even walking quickly still hurts. I've been in PT and they tell me these are hard to heal. I am really starting to be concerned I will have to defer my entry into the Marine Corp Marathon. I have about a month until the deferrals open for the race. Its been 4 weeks since I ran and although I am doing some cross training its just not the same. I really miss running and am feeling very out of sorts without my regular runs. It is frustrating because I was really starting to settle in to my training for my first full and had seen some great benefits from heart rate training. So depressing!

ATTQOTD: I race in my long run shoes. I am not super fast, so I feel no need to switch to a lighter shoe for racing. Like others, I have struggled to find shoes I love. I currently have 4 pairs of sneakers. I used to love the Ghost, but hated the 7s, and the 8s are not great for me either. So I use them as cross training and day to day walking around shoes. I love my Saucony Triumph for short runs, but tend to get blisters in them over 6 miles. My long run shoe is the Brooks Defyance. I like it and it doesn't bother me at all, but I don't love it, and I do wish it were a bit lighter. I had been planning on trying the glycerin as my next long run shoe, but with no miles in 28 days, I don't know that I will need to get new shoes soon. I was also considering the NB 1080. I have 680s for cross trainers/day to day, and like those a lot.

Hang in there and, above all else, be patient! Hamstrings take time and rehab work to heal properly and, trust me, it is worth it in the long run even if it means deferring/skipping a race. When I tore mine last year, I was not allowed to run for two months and when I went back I had to use slowly increasing intervals to build the strength back up. It ended up being 8 months from injury to full running again for me. Now, after 3 months I was able to run and run races as long as I stuck to my intervals, so all that time doesn't have to be lost. Above all else, do your stretching and strengthening exercises and if it doesn't feel right when you start back on it, back off and don't reinjure it. The key to the recovery is encouraging the muscle to heal properly and completely. I had a bad habit of "tweaking" mine playing sports and going right back to playing in a week or two. That led to a lot of incomplete healing, scar tissue formation and weakening of the muscle that finally caught up to me in the form of the final tear. Please don't make my mistake by rushing back to running early.

Sorry to hear that. I hope you are able to get back to running soon.

QOTD: Todays question was suggested from one of our fellow posters to this forum. Thank you for the suggestion. If anyone else would like to suggest one, just send me a PM. Todays questions is, "I am running my first challenge this weekend with a Sat & Sun race (non-disney.) For the challenge-veterans out there, What is your picture taking strategy with all those medals on your last day? Do you carry the previous day(s) medals with you or gear check them or have a family member hold onto them or just wait until you've showered and dressed at your hotel to take your big "every medal" pictures?".

ATTQOTD: I do not have any experience in this department, but I like the option of a family member holding on to them for after the race sounds like a good one. You could also do another one after a shower as well. You can never have to many pictures.

For those with a Garmin that has the race predictor, how do you feel about the times it gives you? I had a good laugh, and then said well these are actually near my goals, then laughed again, then thought well at least my watch thinks I can do it.
Below is what the watch says:
5k - 18:48
10k - 39:01
13.1 - 1:26:18
26.2 - 3:00:04

My sig below has my actual current PR's lol. It also claims my VO2max is 55. Perhaps it just doesn't have enough data yet and as I continue to get some runs in, it will adjust.

Mine are a little optimistic, but really not too far off...only a minute quicker than my current PR's (other than the marathon). VO2 is 58 running / 65 cycling.

5K - 17:43/18:44
10K - 36:45/37:44
13.1 - 1:21:15/1:22:15
26.2 - 2:49:43/2:58:20

My 5K is old and I have run 5K splits that fast during HM's, and my marathon time would have likely been closer to 2:55 at Boston if the weather wasn't so blazing hot...I had raced a 30K two weeks before Boston at 1:58 which McMillan predicts at 2:50:45 for 26.2. I'm still a bit bitter as that was a true reflection of my fitness at the time.

Aw, sorry to hear this! Hang in there and hopefully you heal up soon and get to run that marathon!

Am I the only one thinking that @roxymama and @michigandergirl should have some sort of side bet for this one? One involving @michigandergirl wearing a Bears jersey or @roxymama in a Tigers jersey? Of course it would need to be posted on the thread :)

I do a bit of both. For my first GSC in 2014 I had my husband bring my 10k medal to the finish. I took some pictures there with all the medals that year, but skipped that step for GSC 2015 and 2016. I had him bring the 10k to the Avengers finish last year. For all my challenges, after I showered and changed, I wore my challenge medal to the parks and brought the others, and tok pictures with all of them. For my Coast to Coast after Avengers, I had all my GSC medals and IGC medals, plus the Coast to Coast, that was a lot of weight in my backpack, I only took a picture with all of those at the partners statue.

I'm probably the odd one here, but I don't take "every medal" pictures. I take ones with the medal(s) I have at the end of the race. I also only wear one medal during DATW too. One Dopey medal represents the same thing as the six medals, but it's a lot lighter and easier to deal with. ;)

That is what I did for Goofy this year. Wore the Goofy medal and the Marathon shirt/I did It shirt, and was good for the pictures I wanted in the parks.

ATTQOTD: For this years Dark Side Challenge I had my wife bring them to the finish so we could take pictures. The medals from Disney races as many of us know are pretty heavy so I was not going to run with them in my running belt. I think it will depend where you want the pictures taken. If there are a lot of race themed areas near the finish that you want you may want to bring them and cheek them or have someone else hold them.

Same here. We will take an every medal picture after we have showered and before we head back out, but we don't take them with us to the last race. Our group only wears our medal from our longest race completed, most recent race completed, or challenge medal. I mean, I can definitely pull off the Mr. T look but it feels a bit unnecessary to flaunt that glamorous lifestyle.

Yeah, I love to get previous models at Running Warehouse or LeftLane Sports. The Altra Olympus that I stocked up on were from LLS, I got them for $29.98 each!
I'm a big fan of left lane sports. 6pm is another good site for last years model of shoes.

I think it depends on the event venue. From what I've seen at Disney events I didn't see a lot of people with all their medals in the Finish area after the Full Marathon Sunday or after the Disneyland Half. I did see a lot of people talking all medal pics in from the Castle. At Disney I'll usually shove my medals into a backpack and wear only the challenge medal. If I'm meeting a character and have that characters medal I'll wear it for that pic and I might take a castle pic with all my medals. Our running group usually does a celebration dinner on Sunday of marathon weekend before dinner we get a pick from above of the table with each persons medals on their plate.

I've also done challenges at the Flying Pirate in OBX. I didn't see anyone with their prior days medal at the finish.

Seems that we are all "odd" together, as I do the same - only wear the challenge medal.
