The Running Thread - 2016

I second the idea!

Oh no! Ack!

Mark me down for my 5k goal as to be my slowest 5k of the year. I'm literally trying to have a slow 5k with my husband...running at our long-run training pace on purpose together. What is the opposite of a P.R.? A P.U.?
The 10k I would like to PR from my 1:07 but just not too sure with the weather. I could change my mind mid-way through or even at the start. I literally went for a 2 mile easy run last night in the high 80 degree weather and was like "I need a pep-talk, someone talk me back into this crazy 5k/10k nonsense I have coming up" I'm hoping that was just a one and done moment of self-doubt.

If @michigandergirl beats my 10k (which I'm feeling very confident that she will if it stays high 87's) then my kiddo and I will post a congratulations message in all our Tigger finery since we own no actual Tiger paraphenalia :)

Oh and we need to figure out how to get a pic together! I will be corral 6 on Saturday and 29 on Sunday with a 6'3" bearded dude and will post what I'm wearing soon. Ice cream skirt on sunday for sure. Probably hot pink under-armour hat.

The bet doesn't necessarily have to be on the fastest time. To make it more fair, you could each put forth a predicted finishing time, and whoever is closest to their goal time wins.

Or it could be a ratio based on each of your 10k PRs. For example, let's say your 10k PR is 67 minutes and @michigandergirl's is 50 minutes (I'm making this up - don't know her actual 10k PR). When you finish, you divide your race time by 67 minutes, and @michigandergirl divides her race time by her 10k PR, then the one with the lowest ratio wins. Fair and fun!

Only if @Keels does the math.
Or we could just see who can chug their post-race free beer the fastest? (I kid!)

I was just going to post the same thing Jon...running is such an individual sport, it isn't always fair to just run straight up against someone else (unless it's the elites, which I'm pretty sure none of us are). Best to just handicap times based off of race goals.

Seems that we are all "odd" together, as I do the same - only wear the challenge medal.
Same here...I am not a fan of the windchime effect that accompanies multiple medals.

QOTD: Todays question was suggested from one of our fellow posters to this forum. Thank you for the suggestion. If anyone else would like to suggest one, just send me a PM. Todays questions is, "I am running my first challenge this weekend with a Sat & Sun race (non-disney.) For the challenge-veterans out there, What is your picture taking strategy with all those medals on your last day? Do you carry the previous day(s) medals with you or gear check them or have a family member hold onto them or just wait until you've showered and dressed at your hotel to take your big "every medal" pictures?".
I have no experience with a challenge yet but I have run the 5k and half at WDW weekend. I took pictures after the half with my half medal but then went back showered and took photos around the parks with both medals. I know you are doing a non-Disney race so I'm not sure what would work best for you.

35 is absolutely still young! I am 35!
61 is still young! Running keeps you young if you listen to your body and have reasonable expectations!

Started running 3 years ago in Asics Gel 1000s from Rack Room because they felt good. Got fitted later and moved to Kayanos. Rotate 2-3 pairs which allows one pair to dry completely before they come up again. Also, if it rains during a challenge I don't have to worry about drying out a pair.

Medals: I take a picture with current medal and wear the latest or challenge medal to the parks. Had to decide last year what to do with DDD and CTC medals. Ended up wearing coast to coast shirt with DDD medal! I take very few pictures of myself because I didn't grow up in the selfie-generation!

ATTQOTD: Our friends at Dark Side brought their Light Side half medals with them, so they could get all three pictured at the end. DW and I just wait and get changed up.

We saw someone at Disneyland come up with a good solution to the 2 medal clanging problem: tie up one of the ribbons and place them one on top of the other. It works! Usually it's one medal at a time, though.

I am even odder... I hardly ever take post race pics and never wear my medals. :)

Is this even for Disney races? Because it should be illegal NOT to wear them to the parks! In fact... We noticed after Dark Side, we were about the only ones still sporting ours by Tuesday. TUESDAY! WAKE UP, AMERICA! We ran into a few people who just left them in the room! What is this madness! (We won't be leaving Dopey until Thursday. I'll probably be sleeping in the danged thing.)

Some shoes I'm looking at possibly trying are the Saucony Triumph and Hoka Claytons. The Hokas still don't come in a D width, but I've seen some mention that they are wider than the other models, so it might work. I don't know if I'd like Hokas though if the cushioning is really soft.
I tried the Hoka Claytons - they wound up being too stiff for me, but I can attest that they're a very different fit form other Hokas. They are, indeed, wider through the forefoot - I loved the original Cliftons, but that narrow forefoot created way too many blisters! I'm at the wide end of normal width in the front, but have very narrow heels: I had plenty of space in the Clayton's forefoot, but the heel cinched down decently. The cushion is definitely more bouncy than squishy, which I liked. That had been my other issue with the CLiftons: too marshmallowy after a while.

ATTQOTD: I won't bring my extra medals to the race because I'd have to check them at bag check, and I never trust that anything going into bag check will come back out. But I do wear them all to wherever I go after the race (yep, I'm a Clanger lol!), so I usually wind up taking a pic with them at some point.

Are pokemon stops during runs acceptable breaks? :) Almost all of my running routes go through downtown, there are so many pokemons and stops down there.
I made 3 Poke stops between my car and the treadmill at the rec center last night, lol![/QUOTE]

This is why I love this thread...I would have never thought of the clanging issue. And that will BUG ME! So I think I'm going to take my pics with my 10k & remix medal somewhere fun near the race after-party. And then my guess is that one of them will be pocketed if the clanging does annoy me. If we don't have a personal 5k medal holder while we run I will just wait until we are showered and dressed after to take a 3 medal pic somewhere fun in Chicago. Maybe I can convince the family to trek out to Navy Pier since the 10k medal is the ferris wheel...Oooooh maybe take the pic ON the ferris wheel. hmmmmm

Any particular reason you would have to check them? I'm paranoid about them getting lost, as well, and have always kept them with me in my backpack/carry-on. Haven't had any issues going through security with them.

After the Dark Side weekend, TSA took a good amount of time looking at each of the medals I had in my carry-on. They did let me through, but not until after a pretty thorough check.

I'm probably the odd one here, but I don't take "every medal" pictures. I take ones with the medal(s) I have at the end of the race. I also only wear one medal during DATW too. One Dopey medal represents the same thing as the six medals, but it's a lot lighter and easier to deal with. ;)

Same here. I think I tried wearing the three medals from Goofy to the park that night and didn't even make it to our car before I realized that would drive me nuts. So, we just wore the Goofy medal and called it good. I do love those #allthemedals pictures in front of the castle though, so I may have to plan something like that out after finishing Dopey 2018, but I would not wear them around like that.

Am I the only one thinking that @roxymama and @michigandergirl should have some sort of side bet for this one? One involving @michigandergirl wearing a Bears jersey or @roxymama in a Tigers jersey? Of course it would need to be posted on the thread :)

HA! Funny! I'm game for anything as long as someone else does the math...I'm with @Keels, I hate math.

I have no idea how I'm going to run these races yet. It is completely dependent on the amount of beers consumed the nights before. I'd like to think I will behave, but I'm traveling with two of my besties and we have a history of being over-served. :P

@roxymama how did you find out what corrals your in?

ATTQOTD: I'm going to wait until after I've showered to take a pic with all my medals.

I wore my Tink medal to the park but took it off after an hour or so. It was heavy and I didn't like it hanging around my neck. :)

For W&D, I can't even remember what I did. I know I didn't wear them (W&D and C2C) to the after party because it was so hot and I was drenched and I don't like getting the ribbons all wet and I didn't want them to be clanging around. I did have them with me for the next day at least in my bag, but I didn't end up wearing it that I can remember, other than to take a picture for my mom with them.

ATTQOTD: I did the Glass Slipper challenge back in February and didn't bring my 10k medal with me. I did bring all three to the parks that day and took some pictures with all three. The thought of wearing all the medals lasted about 10 seconds after the clanging of all three up against eachother became really annoying. I was wearing my challenge tshirt that day so I just wore the challenge medal along with it.

My first thought was to put the first medal in your checked bag if you want a picture at the finish and someone can't be there to keep it for you or you don't have room in a running belt?

Go to this link http://www.runrocknroll.com/chicago/the-races/confirm-entry

Enter your name & birthdate and hit enter. Then hit the button to get your confirmation sheet. The 10k corral will be on the top. Scroll down a little bit for your 5k. I submitted pretty conservative times last year when I signed up so our corrals are pretty far back in the pack.
Make sure to print that confirmation page for packet pick up for race morning/expo!

I 100% agree with you on no idea how I will run my 10k. I'm going to Duck Duck Goat with friends the night before and am going to TRY to behave myself....also it's July. But I will cross those finish lines!

We're talking about different things, I think! I'm talking about bringing medals from the same race weekend to the final race of the challenge - say, bringing the 10K medal earned on Sat to the Sun race so as to take pics immediately after finishing with all 3 challenge medals. I won't do that because I'm not going to carry that first medal all through the next race, and bags are lost all the time in race bag check, so I won't leave it there, either. I thought that was what was being asked, but maybe I misunderstood?
