The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: Bad habits that running has ended for me... Well when I run a lot, I eat more because I seem to always be hungry. I sleep a little less because I am either getting up super early to run or staying up late to catch up on e-mail I missed during an evening run. I spend way too much money on shoes, gear, race registration and travel. So not sure running has improved my bad habits! But I love running, I feel more connected to myself and accomplished and my doctor says I have a great resting heart rate; so I got that going for me!

Quite a list of folks running races this weekend. Great races to you all!!! Go get 'em!

And Toy Story Mania, and Space Mountain or Star Wars (not really sure on the last one).

Toy Story

So is this Space Mountain then?

Edit: I saw the NB shoe thread and looks like you all figured out it was. What type of New Balance shoe do they usually release these in? I've never really paid attention to the Disney shoes but these might get me interested.

They've changed up the models a bit each year. Not sure which model the Disney shoes will be this year.

QOTD: Todays question is a suggestion from a fellow poster on this thread. Thanks for the suggestion! Have you ever experienced a race mistake: course mismeasured, pace leader taking you off course, obstacle such as a train? Did the race director do anything to rectify the mistake?

ATTQOTD: I have run a 5k that has been .25 miles short while giving a PR effort. I was not happy as that short on a 5k is huge and nothing could really be done about it. The sad thing is, others races keep using the same route, so if I see a 5k that starts from that same area I avoid running it and wait for another one to come along. I've had marathons show up longer on my GPS, but that was mainly from not being able to run the tangents, so not big deal there.

@LSUlakes - please change my goal down to 1:43:00. I am hoping my PR effort last weekend didn't hurt my legs too much for this weekends race.

ATTPQOTD: I think I probably eat more now then when I did before running, especially as the miles ramp up in the training plan.

ATTQOTD: I had a 10 mile race last year that ended up being a 10.5 miler where the out and back section ended up being marked about .125 long for the course, and it was a 2 lap race.

ATTQOTD: I once ran past the finish line (which was two cones set together about one and a half humans apart) on the very side of the street with a guy with a stopwatch yelling a number and a lady writing in pencil your time on your bib. I had to run back once I figured it out...since I was running for the start line inflatable off in the distance. That was mostly user-error on my part but still I found it very odd. I didn't complain cause it was still a PR for me at the time so I was so excited (my third race I think.)

SIDENOTE ON NB SHOES!: I posted in the NB shoe thread that I hoped one day they'd have t-cup shoes... and then I saw someone post literally at the same time that they HAVE T-CUP SHOES this year!!! AHHHHH! I think I may need a more zoomed in view of the shoe but it seems maybe the N has teeny t-cups on it. So bye bye money, fly away.

Hi guys,

Anyone looking for their next marathon? (looking at you @LSUlakes and @DopeyBadger !) I read about a great website (cred to a saltyrunning.com commenter) that has lots of data about typical weather, elevation profiles, what proportion BQ, etc. Lots and lots of stats for @DopeyBadger! They even have rankings of fastest marathons and top BQ marathons. You can also search based on location (including Canada), month, day (Saturday vs Sunday), profile, surface etc:

www.findmymarathon.com

I'm definitely bookmarking it for when I decide to run my first marathon or if I try to BQ! (no other distances on that website).

ATYQOTD: My habits haven't changed too much, I kicked a lot of the worse ones when I got pregnant. But I did meet someone who said he used to smoke 3-5 packs a day and was in bars til 3am and stopped cold turkey once he started running.

ATTQOTD: My last half was sparsely staffed, so at one fork I followed the guy in front of me into a dead end (phew! what if it wasn't a dead end?). Luckily it didn't add much. The crowd support wasn't much (though my husband was there!), but the goodies at the end were pretty amazing - including free massages! Like the opposite of a rD event.

ATTQOTD:Fortunately not.

After having to stop a long due to bad shin splints back on 10/1, I'm finally back to running. I've done 1, 2, and 3 miles this week. I'm taking a recovery day today, but hope that there won't be any negative consequences. Now to figure out how to salvage a training plan that'll get me in shape for LS Half in January.

I have in the inaugural Cream Puff 5K I ran this summer. The course was short! It was only like 2.8 miles instead of 3.1. The race director emailed everyone and said that would be fixed for next year but did not offer anything else.

Some volunteers at a small, local (inaugural) 5k were sending people straight at an intersection where the course was suppose to turn left (at about mile 2.5). I was the first person in the race to realize this, so I told them, and then I continued by making the correct turn and finished the 5k according to the race map. I ended up being the first person to cross the finish line since all the folks ahead of me went straight with no further direction since, at that point, they were off course. At the finish, I immediately told the race director what had happened, and they went into full panic mode. There wasn't much they could do except to go out and find all the lost runners. Needless to say, the race results were never posted, and this race has never been run since. I talked to one of the race leaders after he eventually found his way back to the starting area, and he said there were three of them at the front, and they continued going straight (including across a very busy road) until they realized they had gone about 3.5 miles and something wasn't right. Since none of them were from the immediate area, they had no idea how to get back to the start, so they eventually knocked on someone's door to get directions.

Don't know what the race director learned, but I learned that you should always have a pace car (or bicycle) regardless of how small the race is.

I'll definitely bookmark that site. Another good one is

http://www.runningintheusa.com/Race/Default

Lots of information about everything from 5k's to ultras.

ATTQOTD: 5k race at Outer Banks was a measured too long but they told us before the race started so at least it wasn't a surprise.

Nice Find!

I will say that just about every Chicago race = messed up GPS, so I hear people all the time complaining afterwards about the course being long. EVERY RACE! And I was one of them last year until I was educated on all the reasons GPS just don't work downtown. I can't read yelp reviews anymore because every race is people complaining that the course length was wrong.
I often joke about how I'd have these unrealistic PR's if Chicago would just measure their courses right :)

@LSUlakes I have a race to add! I might have the last race of 2016 on this thread:

December 31 - Flossbolna - Nuremberg New Years Eve Run 5k (Nürnberger Silvesterlauf 5km) (35:00 / N/A)

Hope this is the right format for you to copy and paste! Hopefully 2017 will bring a 10k for me! Already have some local races in mind.
