The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Todays question is a suggestion from a fellow poster on this thread. Thanks for the suggestion! Have you ever experienced a race mistake: course mismeasured, pace leader taking you off course, obstacle such as a train? Did the race director do anything to rectify the mistake?

ATTQOTD: I have run a 5k that has been .25 miles short while giving a PR effort. I was not happy as that short on a 5k is huge and nothing could really be done about it. The sad thing is, others races keep using the same route, so if I see a 5k that starts from that same area I avoid running it and wait for another one to come along. I've had marathons show up longer on my GPS, but that was mainly from not being able to run the tangents, so not big deal there.
Similar to what happened to you, I was racing a 5K and was on track for a huge PR, and it ended up coming in at 2.8 miles or something. It was a new race and no one said anything about it...I was so bothered by it that I ended up emailing the race director, and he basically said, "yeah, we know...sorry." I'm not sure what I expected, but I wasn't impressed that they basically knew about the course and just didn't say anything, or fix it.

So needless to say, I don't do races put on by that company anymore! :rolleyes2
@scottwvu posted a link to the new balance shoes on the other thread: Toy Story Mania, Mad Tea Party, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain

http://www.newbalance.com/rundisney/?searchSource=Disney
So, anyone else think they switched the labels for the Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain shoes?

The ones labeled "Space Mountain" look like they have the wallpaper eyes, while the ones labeled "Haunted Mansion" have blue streaks that remind me of the "lasers" on the Space Mountain lift hill. :confused3

So it wasn't just me! If mislabeled, the space mountain ones with the "lasers" look pretty cool!

Questions:
1. Can anyone tell me more about the chicken exit for ToT? I am not certain DD will be fully on board with this ride.
2. What is "trophy points" on this site? First time I noticed them was today...

@LSUlakes I have a race to add! I might have the last race of 2016 on this thread:

December 31 - Flossbolna - Nuremberg New Years Eve Run 5k (Nürnberger Silvesterlauf 5km) (35:00 / N/A)

Hope this is the right format for you to copy and paste! Hopefully 2017 will bring a 10k for me! Already have some local races in mind.

Perfect on the format! Thanks.

Yeah, I was excited with the teaser that it would be HM, then I saw the picture and was like "....ok?" Switching them makes more sense to me.

Perfect on the format! Thanks.
1. I believe you do the pre-show in the library and then head to the boiler room. There's a separate elevator you take from the "real" ones - when the bellhops ask how many are in your party I think that's when you indicate you want to take the chicken exit.
2. I feel like it's meaningless (I used to post on a different message board that used this same software and the trophy points maxed out at 117 or something and we all just ignored it)

@LSUlakes - Please add the following race:

December 4 – RunDisneyDad – San Antonio RnR Half Marathon (1:30/NA)

ATTQOTD: I did a 10K a long time ago and one of the early miles (Mile 2) was measured wrong (measured long), so as you were trying to determine your pace (this was before GPS watches) you assumed you were slower because that second mile was taking so long. It wasn’t that big of a deal as it was a fun race.

Both my daughter and son used the chicken exit for ToT a couple years ago. Just let the CMs know when you are in line for the ride "elevators," and they redirect them to the waiting area at the exit.

Hi guys,

Anyone looking for their next marathon? (looking at you @LSUlakes and @DopeyBadger !) I read about a great website (cred to a saltyrunning.com commenter) that has lots of data about typical weather, elevation profiles, what proportion BQ, etc. Lots and lots of stats for @DopeyBadger! They even have rankings of fastest marathons and top BQ marathons. You can also search based on location (including Canada), month, day (Saturday vs Sunday), profile, surface etc:

www.findmymarathon.com

I'm definitely bookmarking it for when I decide to run my first marathon or if I try to BQ! (no other distances on that website).

This website is pretty addictive. You can even look at fastest marathons by year... which would take into consideration actual weather vs. typical weather. For example, the WDW marathon has a PR Score of 99.59 as it's typical/"regular" score (#56 fastest marathon in a typical year). This puts it among the easier marathons. However for this past January's race, WDW had a PR Score of 93.73 (putting it as the #334 "fastest" marathon thus far in 2016)... I'm guessing due to the high humidity.

You can do also what-ifs where you can take a PR from one course and "convert" it to what you'd theoretically run on another.

QOTD: In the 10k I did a few weeks ago, they had accidentally moved some cones in the first 1/4 mile of the race and the first ~10 runners started to head in the wrong direction -- but luckily people realized quickly, they only ran an extra 100yds or so. The organizer apologized profusely at the awards ceremony.

I ran a 10k at the beach a few years ago. It was the most poorly run race from start to finish I have ever encountered. The race included a half, 10k, and 5k which subsequently started in that order. They made an announcement for everyone to come to the start line then no one moved for 20+ minutes. Turns out the volunteer who was supposed to put the "turn here" signs and mile markers never showed up. Each race distance ended up being longer than advertised, especially the people doing the half who ran a half of a mile extra. They also decided to close down the last water stop before the finish line so the people doing the 10k and half went the last four miles without water. To make things even better, I got a certificate in the mail a couple of days later saying I finished top three in my age group. But they were totally wrong and had me running the 10k about 15 minutes faster than I have ever run one. I felt bad because someone had actually earned that and it for sure wasn't me. If it had been just one of these things to happen, I probably would have let it roll off my shoulders because stuff happens but it was just a hot mess.

ATTQOTD: Not really, although at a 10k this year there were only 6 of us (everyone else did the 5K and had done the turn back already) and I was last. The course was not marked well and I had to ask a policeman who was doing traffic control where I was supposed to go. And heading back I wasn't sure if I was on the right route since EVERYONE had already packed up and headed back by the time I got to the turns! I did a 1:17 10k so I didn't think I was THAT slow! But I was DFL and won't be doing that one again! DH and I will do the 5k.

@LSUlakes I used the "chicken exit" last year. The CM was super nice and understanding and took me down in a regular elevator and showed me where to go to wait for the rest of my party - the room where the ride pictures are displayed. I did go back and ride it later though, so I wasn't a "total" chicken. Just was feeling nauseas and had a headache.

ATTQOTDs:
(Yesterday): No bad habits quit yet... I still drink an occasional pop and eat too much sugar. ;) Running has changed my health though.. I used to get terrible stomach pains and haven't had one since I started running regularly.
(Today): Nope! Hoping my race this weekend is correct.

Speaking of my 10K... SO NERVOUS. I don't know where these nerves are coming from, but I struggled to even run 2 miles last night. I feel doomed. I'm sure it will be fine, but I am ready for it to be over! I think it's the POT stress that is making me extra nervous!

It's not as bad as it used to be but I always get nervous before a race(including this weekend ). But once the race starts it goes away because all that's left is the running part. :) Make your plan for the race, try to stick to it, and do your best. All we can do. Some days it goes right, some days it goes off plan. But I bet you'll do great and get an awesome POT. :)

I know that website quite well. Lots and lots and lots and lots of data digging has been conducted on there. :D

I always have terrible training runs before a big race. I question how I will be able to go on. And then I do fine once at the race. But that doesn't stop it from happening every time. So either we are both normal or both weird #solidarity

I wonder if we tried this and DD didn't want to ride the ride, would DW get a child swap FP to ride it after I did? I would think no, but not sure if anyone has had any experience with this...

I have never done the child swap so I don't know. I would think they would?

Apologies - I kind of gave on up on ever catching up on every post here over the days I was away for W&D. Congrats to all who rocked runs and races!!!

QOTD: Do you use back check offered for your races? Why or why not? What items do you check?
Generally only for halfs or fulls at Disney, and only if weather dictates me wanting a change of shoes and/or extra clothes. For some cold races last winter, I packed an extra mylar blanket in case rD didn't give them out and a fleece top: that made the walk back to my car more comfortable. I'll pack a pair of Crocs at minimum for the full in January. I didn't bother with bag check in any race this past weekend for W&D - weather was nice enough not to need it. I will NEVER pack anything of value - I know people whose bags were lost with car keys, wallets, etc. I carry my car key with me during races.

QOTD: What are some things you think about while you are out for a run?
I don't know! Nothing of substance - I kind of just free associate and let thoughts come and go as they please. Running is very zen-like for me.

QOTD: Other than getting your runs in as part of your training for your next big race, what do you think is the next most important thing to having a successful race?
REST. During training and especially in the days of a race weekend. I need lots and lots of downtime.

QOTD: Since today is election day, todays question will focus on that. Did you or are you going to vote? Are you going to have to adjust your running plans to both run and vote today?
Mail-in ballot, baybee! Voted weeks before the election.

QOTD: What bad (unhealthy) habits you had that running helped put a end to?
Smoking. I started running regularly for fitness in my early 20s and it made smoking less fun so I stopped. In all honesty, I really enjoyed smoking and would take it back up in a heartbeat if it wasn't so bad for me.

I have two questions:

1. Ladies (said in my best "Ladies Man" voice) do any of you wear the sport specific underwear? I know UA and Champion both make them. Just wondering if they are worth the price.

2. We are doing Star Wars Dark Side and are contemplating doing one park - Animal Kingdom - likely the day of the 10k. If we have a one day, one park ticket, can we leave for a few hours to nap and come back in on the same ticket?
1. Nope - I wear skorts or capris that are constructed so as not to need underwear so I don't use them. I grew up in the dance world, where underwear is never worn under tights/leotards, so the whole notion of wearing them under exercise gear is foreign to me!
2. Absolutely!

In a local race the course map had us make a left turn at one point, but the volunteers manning that spot had us turn right instead. There were other turns that corrected it and the total distance wasn't changed but it was a little weird.

Questions:
1. Can anyone tell me more about the chicken exit for ToT? I am not certain DD will be fully on board with this ride.
My son always takes the chicken exit, so I'm very familiar! Your DD will wait in the queue with you right up until you get in the ride elevator, but she'll get on a regular elevator that will take her to where you'll exit the ride in the gift shop area.

I wonder if we tried this and DD didn't want to ride the ride, would DW get a child swap FP to ride it after I did? I would think no, but not sure if anyone has had any experience with this...

Yes, you can... ToT is on the available Rider Switch list:

What Is Rider Switch and How Does It Work?

If Guests in your party can’t or don’t want to board an attraction, you don’t have to miss out!

If a child does not meet the height requirement or a Guest does not wish to board a particular attraction, no problem! With Rider Switch, one adult can wait with the non-rider (or riders) while the rest of the party enjoys the attraction. When the other adult returns, they can supervise the non-riding Guests, and the waiting adult can board the attraction without having to wait in the regular line again!

Rider Switch is available at select attractions at all 4 Walt Disney World Resort theme parks.

To Use Rider Switch:

1. First check with a Cast member to see if Rider Switch is offered at the attraction in question.

2. Once at the attraction, approach the greeting Cast Member with your entire party. At least one adult member of your party and the Guests who are not riding will be given a Ride Switch pass and asked to wait in a designated area (usually outside of the attraction). This group is “Party 2.”

3. The other party members (“Party 1”) ride the attraction.

4. After riding the attraction, Party 1 locates Party 2 and gives the Rider Switch pass to the adult member who will be riding. Party 1 takes over supervision of the non-riding children or Guests.

5. Party 2 enters and boards the attraction without having to wait in the regular queue a second time. The Rider Switch Pass must be presented to a Cast Member at this time.

If the person in Party 2 waited alone with the child, he or she may bring one other Guest back to ride the attraction with him or her. Please note that only 2 Guests are allowed per Rider Switch Pass.
