The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

Just saw a statement from the LAPD on twitter via a local news site:

LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report.

I have a feeling Chris Rock won't press charges. He's got more class. Sometimes bad jokes, but more class.

There is video of Denzel and Tyler Perry comforting WILL SMITH after the punch. Again... what a world.
i saw that video. I’m not quite sure about “comforting” him though. Denzel and Sam could have been giving him a “Fool, what is wrong with you?” kind of talk and laying him out. Then hugged him up so he would keep it together 🤷🏼‍♀️ Will was a dang fool for his actions, that’s for sure 👍🏾 Denzel and Sam have been married for years and could have been scolding him and advising him on his next steps. I could imagine them saying “Man up and apologize and handle this thing later like a man.”

Okay, I finally saw the video. Both Denzel and Tyler Perry are strong directors and problem solvers. They could have been trying to do immediate damage control. They could have been telling Will Smith to pull it together and shake it off because he will attract even more attention to himself (and derail the show further,) if Will keeps crying. That he and Chris Rock can talk it out later, fight it out later, and hopefully hug it out later. But, right now, the audience is on edge, social media has blown up, and they have their Best Actor category coming up. Denzel & Tyler might not have agreed with what Will did, so much as their director's instincts kicked in to get everyone through it.

That's not really a thing, so called "pressing charges". Rock did decline to ask for a police report, so that might reduce the chance of a prosecution. They'd like to have a cooperative victim and a police report, but it's really up to the Los Angeles City Attorney (in this case) to prosecute or not. Everything needed to secure a guilty verdict is right on camera.

If this went to trial I'd think it would be an easy conviction. But something like this probably wouldn't get that far. Maybe a guilty plea, no jail time, and probation plus community service.

Last time Will got into a little fight his momma got scared and sent him to live with auntie and uncle in Bell Aire. I wonder what she'll do this time??? Lol.

Seriously, Will is teetering on Kayne territory. He needs some mental help. I believe that Jada brings out the worst in him.

Oh for heavens sake. What a ridiculous display of childishness and privilege. When I think of the things that are going on in the world right now and this is even a headline? I’m so over the Pinkett / Smiths and how deep and important they think they all are 🙄

While the physical altercation is awful, the joke was in bad taste. To make fun of Jada’s medical conduction? I saw a husband supporting his wife.
I imagine if I had to shave my head because of bald spots I would be sensitive too.
And I’m surprised at the comments about their cheating- if their relationship works for them - good for them.

Oh boy. That was not good.

Honestly, I have always had a soft spot for Will Smith. Yeah, I heard about his open marriage, but I never paid close attention to it because hey whatever floats your boat, who am I to judge.

But this ... ugh! Will, WILL!! :sad2: Not good. We always want to protect our loved ones, but this is not the way to handle it. Way over the top for bad joke. It was just that, a joke. Sure, it may have hit a vulnerable spot (did Chris even know about her alopecia?), but assault isn't the answer. Will is human, and we all make mistakes. But, this one was BIG. And to hear he hasn't apologized to Chris leads me to believe his back peddle was not 100% genuine. He needs to apologize to Chris.

Chris Rock handled it like a gentleman with class. And it is absolutely no surprise he is not pressing charges. Why social media doesn't have his back is beyond me.

Depends on the social media, perhaps. In my circles all I see is people who have the same opinion as you.

The reaction from the Academy is just as shocking. Letting him stay and party, and then later a strange apology that violence isn't condoned.... yeah.

I read about it this morning. Seems to me that Chris mad a joke in pretty poor taste, though likely unintentionally. Will got upset and defended her - not that it was right for him to slap Chris. Chris also understood that he had it coming and isn't making a big stink about it. Will apologized afterward. It's a real old-school way of handling it. As long as the parties involved are all satisfied, then I am too.

Gotta love the Academy’s response-
We don’t condone violence.

We’ll just let it happen on stage, not remove the assaulter, then when he wins we’ll let him get up on stage and “apologize” and all the sheep in the audience will give a standing ovation.

Oh wait maybe we actually do condone violence.

I saw an unstable man get violent over a (bad) joke.

Should high schoolers be allowed to walk around hitting people because they are angry over words? Is this acceptable behavior?

And Will did not apologize to Chris in his speech.

I am in the camp that Will laughed until he realized Jada was ticked. He overcompensated with a mad reaction when he realized he shouldn't be laughing. I don't agree with some on social media that his laughing was just a carry over from the previous joke

This action only knows losers. No one is winning here.

Will Smith has now shown himself as a man who cannot control his emotions, and cannot apologize. Regardless whether Chris Rock knew about the alopecia. Will Smith will have to deal for the coming 8-10 years with his first Oscar win and this assault.

Good parts for older, coloured male actors are not coming by that frequently. Will future producers want to work with him?

No one is talking about King Richard now, his producers will not be happy.

The academy won't be happy. They might not take away his Oscar, but his membership to the Academy might be in jeopardy. They are under pressure to do more than they did until now.

With Coda, Troy and Ariana making unique wins, they are all overshadowed now.

I can't imagine Jada being happy. But no doubt they will discuss it on her talkshow soon.

I am sure he is very insecure after his wife was dating a college aged young adult. That had to hurt. He wants to compensate in some way.

That entire Smith family is all kinds of messed up. This is what happens when you crave attention 24/7.
