The Official DIS Oscars LIVE Watch Party Thread! The Afterparty continues. . .

His “win” will forever be tarnished by his actions. I hope he is banned by the Academy and that any project he is involved with will never qualify for an award.

While the physical altercation is awful, the joke was in bad taste. To make fun of Jada’s medical conduction? I saw a husband supporting his wife.
I imagine if I had to shave my head because of bald spots I would be sensitive too.
And I’m surprised at the comments about their cheating- if their relationship works for them - good for them.

Will was laughing at the joke until he looked over at Jada. There were dozens of other ways he could have supported his wife that would have been more affective. But in the end, it looks like he knew he was in trouble with her and picked the worst possible way.
I read about it this morning. Seems to me that Chris mad a joke in pretty poor taste, though likely unintentionally. Will got upset and defended her - not that it was right for him to slap Chris. Chris also understood that he had it coming and isn't making a big stink about it. Will apologized afterward. It's a real old-school way of handling it. As long as the parties involved are all satisfied, then I am too.
He did not apologize. He excused it.

Right now it's only available on Apple+. I'm hoping the Oscar buzz will encourage a push for additional platforms.
I don't see that happening since it is an Apple movie. They do have free trials, if someone wants to watch it. It is so worth it!

There have been so many rude, offensive jokes made on the Oscars over the years. No one else has had such a reaction. It annoys me to no end, how he has overshadowed all of the other winners that deserved attention.
I had King Richard on my HBO list, I have removed it.

I really hope the Smith family will never be included in the Oscars or any event again. Shameful behavior, then to preach about "love" during his speech... he should've taken a few moments and called to Chris Rock and said "sorry man". Then his reputation would've been redeemed. Instead he looks like a thug. Too bad. He also could've taken time to explain Jadas condition. Brought light to the entire thing.

If Chris Rock knew Jada had alopecia, then the joke was in poor taste, but it was still just a joke. I did not know that about her but do know that she has often worn a short hairstyle.

I understand the people who say he was defending his wife, but he went about it in the wrong way. If he had mentioned that the joke wasn't funny and he supported his wife with words, I think he would have found much more support. Of course, since the audience at the ceremony gave him a standing ovation, maybe they thought an adult hitting another person was fine.

The cover of the NY Post today. (It is is a rag of a newspaper, but always good for great sensational covers.)

I don’t believe Chris Rock knew about her medical condition. He appeared genuinely in shock when replying back it was a joke about GI Jane. The Academy vetted it.

Will Smith was laughing, until he wasn’t supposed to.

That hit was hard enough for Chris’ face to begin swelling on that side. Wouldn’t be surprised if legal is being discussed.

The entire situation from how it was handled it to reactions/responses was something to behold. I guess Ricky Gervais was right; they are a protected class.

I agree with both your points. You should never make a joke about a person’s medical condition. It’s something they can’t help, and it’s cruel.

However, Will could have handled it so much better. Ideally, he could have waited until his acceptance speech, and honored his wife then. But, of course, he didn’t know he had won at the time. Even if he felt a need to publicly censure Chris for the joke, there is a time and a place for everything. Why not simply call him out on Twitter, where the rest of Hollywood fights their battles? He could have defended his wife and let Chris know the joke was in poor taste, and we would have been on his side.

Violence was certainly not the appropriate response, and neither was his yelling and cursing. There are so many other ways he could have made his displeasure known that would have allowed him to maintain his dignity. He will pay for this for a long time.

Sad, as I liked Will before. Everything about this just stinks, especially that he is a role model to many young people. I guess we can look forward to more slapping incidents over minor transgressions since Will made it ok and many others in power in our society condoned it.

Will was absolutely wrong to do it, but, you know, sometimes with guys, they get in a fight and someone gets smacked. Then you buy him a drink and that's the end of it. It's certainly not an ideal way to handle a situation, but it's also not that big of a deal either, other than this being on a very public stage. It's between Chris Rock and Will Smith - that's good enough for me.

The Academy vetted and had a rehearsal with the joke in it, with Will Smith in the audience. He already knew the joke was coming. He had not issue with it until the live broadcast.

Most likely, Chris didn't even write that joke. The Oscars has an army of comedy writers who write the jokes. Chris was likely just reading from the prompter. So yes, the joke was dumb and in bad taste but it's highly possible some other goofy comedian wrote it.

So, honestly, knowing that, makes me wonder if it was indeed staged. I mean, people are talking about the Oscars this morning - how often does that happen anymore? They can say it wasn't, but do we really know?

I also don't think Chris knew about her condition. I think he was just comparing her to the iconic Demi Moore character who was totally bad ***. Jada does not look sick, or weak. It's quite the opposite, she looks fierce and strong and I thought her head was shaved because the wanted it that way. If she did look sick or feeble, then Chris would be wrong for picking on an ill person.

If Will just sat in his seat and yelled "Hey Chris, keep my wife's name out of your mouth!" Then everyone would have chuckled and slapped each other on the back and moved on and it would have looked like part of the gig, but Will would have gotten his point across. But to do what he did on live tv in front of millions was just mind boggling. He tainted his win and now all everyone can talk about is Will and Chris. What a shame. He could have called Chris out later on social media or something.

Also, comedians picking on the celebrities is kind of expected at these lavish award shows. It's ridiculous, these millionaires are dressed in dresses worth thousands of dollars and wearing jewelry that is so expensive some have guards following them to protect the jewlery. They are given swag bags worth hundreds of thousands of dollars while the regular people sit at home in sweat pants eating all the extravagance up. The comedians have been poking fun at the awards shows and celebs for years, and they should expect it by now. Most just chuckle when the camera pans to them and comedian moves on, and everybody forgets about it. Will should have done that and nobody would be talking about it.

And Will did not apologize to Chris in his speech.

I am in the camp that Will laughed until he realized Jada was ticked. He overcompensated with a mad reaction when he realized he shouldn't be laughing. I don't agree with some on social media that his laughing was just a carry over from the previous joke

Yeah, he definitely laughed at the GI Jane 2 joke!

Will could be seen laughing at the joke until Jada had a reaction and said something like, "There he goes after me AGAIN." Reminding Will that this is the second time that Chris has made jokes about Jada. That's when he went into hyper-drive, feeling he had to do something to defend his wife.

Here is the clip when Chris was hosting the Oscars in 2016:

Just saw a statement from the LAPD on twitter via a local news site:

LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report.
It shouldn't matter. This is what drives me nuts...especially in DV situations (obviously not this,) but it's NOT UP TO the victim or shouldn't be. If you commit a crime you shouldn't hope or have the chance to persuade or intimidate your victim into you not having to face consequences. He assaulted someone on national tv with the world watching. No, it shouldn't be up to Chris Rock, it's THE PEOPLE v. the defendant, not the victim v. defendant in a criminal case. For heaven sake they don't even need Chris nor any testimony, you can clearly see what was done...the end.
