Just bumping up....we got lost way back there somewhere.

Sorry I can't answer your queen/king bed question.....we have not been lucky enough to stay at the Grand w/out our kids. ;) Somebody can help I am sure!:thumbsup2

Nope...no beach swimming allowed at all at any WDW resorts. The water looks gross and brown and weedy to me anyway. (that's one reason I don't get the whole "lagoon view" thing;) ) There when there are nice clean pools handy. I think there are critters in that water, too - I have seen people post pics of them. I am not sure why people are waterskiing etc & then no swimming allowed. Doesn't make much sense, does it? That brown water just has no appeal to me. I remember wading in the water at the Poly beach 30+ yrs ago, though!:)

Kelly, that was so nice!! Although it's hard to say what time who played what because I think we sat around and chatted for a few hours!!!

Happy planning!

Lives4Disney :)

That is weird that people can be in the water for waterskiing and jetskiing but not swimming :confused3 , I wasn't aware that the water was gross or that there were critters in it....when you say critters do you mean alligators???? 'Cause we were thinking about doing parasailing or some form of watersport....but if there is alligators....I totally won't get in the water  .

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a garden view room with a king size bed (instead of 2 queens)? And if so what building? Also, does anyone know if you can swim on the beach at the GF, you never see anyone in the water in the pics....but you do see people waterskiing etc....just wondering. Thanks!:upsidedow

Hi!

I am by no means a GF or Disney expert... actually this will be my first visit in Sept.

However, I do beelive that GF has rooms with a king instead of 2 queens, as this is what we had originally requested our garden view room type with 1 king and a sofa bed. On second thought though we decided with the kids it would be better for the 2 queens and day bed. I do nt know which building though.

I suggest you call reservations or the GF directly, I am sure that they can confirm this for you.

getting excited..less than 4 months now!!
Does anyone know the probability of getting a King Bed at Sugarloaf?

Well, a while back there was a whole thread of photos of animals people have seen in the waters at WDW. The ones that stand out in my mind (because they freak me out) are alligators and snakes. LOL...I said critters because I didn't remember all the animals and duh to me couldn't remember if they were crocodiles or alligators.:rotfl: They're the same to me.:scared1:

The alligators are probably on the small side, but the snakes are what really gets me. :scared:

I have no clue because we have always had our kids with us, but you could email IPO and ask and request one. That's what I'd do.:thumbsup2

Happy planning!! We have a bit less than 4 months to go, too. Once school starts it will go fast.

jenins,

I know with the parasailing, you are supposed to take off from and land on the boat and never touch the water, but I am still afraid to do it, mostly because of the snakes (oh, and that I am afraid the line will snap and I will fall hundreds of feet into the murky brown water below). :scared1:

My dad is going to do the parasailing on our October trip, and he wouldn't do it if you had to actually touch the water in any way.

I know they have alligators in the water @ WL; I read about somebody seeing some CMs wrangle one back into the water during their stay ... Yikes. My DD would be terrified if she saw that! She flipped on the AK safari ride that goes over the bridge with the crocodiles!

So I sent an e-mail with me ADRs on Monday evening. Yesterday afternoon I called IPO because I wanted to check to make sure they would make them today, and I knew I was cutting it close with the e-mail. I could not wait on hold, so I left a message. I was on hold with IPO again today for 60 minutes. Gave up. Called back just now, and got through. Spoke with Germaine (spelling?!). Explained situation. Got put on hold for 5 minutes. Came back. Asked for e-mail address. Got put on hold for another few minutes. Came back. Said she found e-mail. Put me on hold for another 5 mionutes to go print the e-mail. Came back and said "Let me see what day we can start booking for you." Now, I had already said when I first got on the phone that today is my 180-day mark. I replied with "I believe it is today." DEAD SILENCE. So after several minutes of saying nothing, she tells me that she can only book 1900 Park Fare, Spoodles, and Ohana today and that everything would not be able to be book 'til the 11th. (We will be there from 02/04-02/10). So I said what about CRT? That is on my list. DEAD SILENCE. (Btw, she is looking at the print out of my e-mail so she has all my information right in front of her.) I was really trying to be patient and not condescending at this point and I tell her I was under the impression that because I am staying at a Disney resort, I can book ADRs 180 days out for up to 10 days. She cuts me off and says I need to be "updated" regarding their policy and that 1900 PF, Spoodles, and Ohana can be booked 190 days ahead and that the rest can be booked on the 11th (which includes Fantasmic package and Narcoosee's and Wonderland Tea Party). I say again, "What about CRT?!" I get put on hold for 10 minutes. When she comes back, she says the reservation system "let her put in all my dates" and that she will book them and e-mail me back. I asked when I could expect the e-mail and she said," Well, I have to enter your information. It might take a while." At that point I thanked her for her time, and told her I would look forward to the e-mail because we didn't get CRT last December, and I am really hoping to get it for DD princess: this time around ...
I know I took a chance by not booking myself, and I learned my lesson, but I jsut cannot believe this woman did not know what she was talking about!!! Rates keep going up and service seems to be declining all the time!!! (Sigh.)

Thanks everyone for reading my rant. Now I am "hoping" to get my e-mail with confirmation numbers later today ...

We are back!

About the parasailing, you don't ever touch the water. We didn't even get a single drop of water on us when we went parasailing; our bathing suits were completely superfluous.

We had a marvelous trip - the concierge manager who was assisting us really came through & did a wonderful job - she went above & beyond. After we checked out of the GF, we went back to give her a gift basket from Basin & a thank-you card. We were very impressed. The staff that we actually saw in the concierge area weren't friendly, but the manager who helped us with the planning was great, if that makes sense. She's a backstage person, so stays in an office & isn't one of the concierge people you'll see out & about in the lounge area.

We got the room we requested: 4321. Hurrah! What was weird was that the room we'd originally wanted, 4421, was taken by people staying for a full month in the room. We got a glimpse of them, and it was a group of 3 men. Odd, because it's a room with an occupancy rate of 2 and only one bed. You'd think it would be a fire hazard to put more people in a room than its occupancy rates.

I will be posting pictures & more from our trip when my husband gets them uploaded, but I wanted to say a few things about the renovated rooms, since our room was one of the newly redone ones. Some of these may only apply to the honeymoon rooms.

They've added the armchair & ottoman, but the chair is very hard and unpleasant. They have new alarm clocks/radios that you can just stick your iPod in to play music from it. The shower curtain rod is new, and it's now a curved bar, to better accommodate the garden tub, which was nice. The shower head was also new, and the water pressure with the new heads was much better than the water pressure with the old ones. They've got new wallpaper on part of the room walls, and the curtains and bedspread are new. The desk stayed the same, though I know that I've seen different desks in the photos from the Conch Key rooms. I've actually bought one of those desks! So I don't know whether they're keeping the older desks in all of the RPC rooms or just in the honeymoon rooms.

The armoire is now gone, replaced with a dresser and a nice, big flat-screen LG television. I miss the way that the armoire hid the screen, though. Oh, and Channing, our room had a new refrigerator AND the mini-bar, so there is still hope! They've also replaced some, though not all, of the lightbulbs with compact fluorescents, which is nice. And they've changed out the lamp shades, as well.

I think that's all I remember from the renovations, but I will be posting photos, so probably something will strike you that I've left out.

Cheers!

Good to know you don't touch the water....maybe we will do this instead of waterskiing or jet skiing....since that involves being in the water and god only knows what lives there!!:scared1:

OMG. :sad2:  :guilty: :scared1:

I totally understand. I am right there with ya on this. Our November Thanksgiving stay will be our first ever nonconcierge GF stay. Honestly, I don't mind too much. I will miss the wonderful RPC CMs and the sweet & friendly lounge ladies and maybe the lounge because I love it up there.....BUT I agree big time that certain things about GF concierge (and others as well) have gone down the tubes.

I will be crossing my fingers for you. HOpe it works out.

Heather! Glad it was a good stay! What was your surprise?? Maybe I missed it - read it fast - gotta run to a movie with my girls.....

Lives4Disney :)

So I have had a bitter/sweet day today. I was supposed to have surgery tomorrow...and they called me this am to tell me that my surgery is postponed until next Friday...8/17. Needless to say I was not happy and cried most of the morning:sad2: . But on the other hand today I was lucky enough to score a dinner ressie @ Le Cellier    (someone on the cancelation board unknowingly had 3 ressies for Le cellier in one week and so very graciously gave one to me) So that made my day a little better. I am just concerned now with the surgery being postponed that we may have to delay our trip (we almost had to cancel it before due to this whole mess)...and I really really need this trip....Looking forward to it has been one of the only things getting me through lately. I think I need some magic pixie dust or something to change my luck.

Before I go into the actual anniversary stuff, I wanted to post some photos of our renovated room at the GF, though the two will kind of overlap. When we got into our room on the first day, it had balloons and Happy Anniversary signs all over the place! Very cool. So I have some photos showing the room that also have some of our anniversary surprises.

Here is the armoire:

And the bed, which you can see is the same, but the bedspread is different, and the new armchair is on the side of this photo:

Here is one photo of the curtains:

Here is the renovation sign:

Here is the new wallpaper & curtains in the foyer area of our room (and more balloons!):

Here are the H2O amenities:
270502655.jpg

And when we got into our room, there was also a lovely Mickey vase & bouquet for us, wishing us some anniversary magic:
270502666.jpg

We love being able to see the wedding pavilion from our room; since we were married there, it makes the anniversary more special to have a view of the pavilion from our room:
270502657.jpg

And, last but not least, here is a shot of the gray meat on a stick - our favorite :scared1:

More photos & anniversary recaps to come!
Cheers!

Wow, Heather! I'm so glad to hear you had a wonderful trip. 4321 is the room we stayed in for our vow renewal July 12th. Unfortunately, ours was a less than magical stay and our platinum planner we had while there over Memorial Day weekend was completely non existant. Glad to hear you had better luck since I would definitely like to try the platinum plan (and the included kids bsitting options) in the future!

The room looks great but yuk! that chair!! It looks like it belongs in a hospital somewhere! What a bummer. I guess I no longer need to post photos of 4321 since it is now outdated.

We also tried the parasailing (even though I was completely terrified most of the time!) We actually did it after we'd checked out and went in our clothes and were fine. Amazing views though.

Can't wait to hear more about your trip.

Lisa

Lisa, that chair was so hard & uncomfortable, too. I think a nice, comfy armchair would be a good addition to the room, but this one did not fit the bill.

I'm about to post the anniversary surprises, but I wanted to mention something that I thought was odd. At the end of the trip, I went to the concierge desk to tell the CM on duty (Dan) how much we'd appreciated what they'd done for us on our trip, and to ask who to thank. He said that this is just standard operating procedure, and that they do this for any couple celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon at the GF. I found this so odd, since in all the years we've been staying at the GF, even including our Disney wedding trip, we've never had such royal treatment. I just didn't know why it got brushed aside as nothing special, when it really was, and we were deeply appreciative.

I also forgot to add the different room number plaques:
270516177.jpg

And without further ado, on to the anniversary goodies.

When we got to our room, we were surprised by all of the balloons and Happy Anniversary signs around the room. There was also the Mickey floral arrangement and a signed card from Mickey and Minnie, wishing us a happy anniversary. We were just thrilled, but then it got better.

On August 4th, the night before our anniversary, we came back from dinner to find this in our room:
270516173.jpg

A signed card from Cinderella & the prince, along with a red rose and a half bottle of Korbel sparkling wine.

The concierge manager who took over with helping us plan our trip had cancelled our California Grill dinner reservations and had arranged a surprise anniversary dinner for us. We didn't know when/where/what, but we just trusted her judgment.

On our anniversary, August 5th, we got a card in our room that morning telling us to be out on the marina at 9 pm (Wishes fireworks were at 10). When we got there, they had set up the pontoon boat with a white tablecloth over the table, a blue light, and rose petals leading to the table. Here is the rose petal trail:
270516170.jpg

And here is a blurry photo of the dinner set up on the boat:
270516194.jpg

They'd arranged with Private Dining for us to have dinner on the pontoon boat! Our boat driver was Rex, who was absolutely awesome. He was obviously a huge Disney fan, and he told us lots of interesting factoids and would use his light to point out signs of interest as he drove us around the lagoon. When Rex greeted us, he handed me an orchid corsage that he'd made himself. He said that he grows orchids for a hobby, and he'd wanted to make me an anniversary corsage. Isn't that just wonderfully nice? I would highly recommend requesting Rex as the driver, for anyone who is booking a fireworks cruise.

Here is a photo of the orchid corsage:
270516180.jpg

Our server from Private Dining was Ruth, and she was also very nice. We started with a salad course, then had a lovely salmon with tomatoes over polenta. It was really delicious. Our dessert was a miniature wedding cake, which was great. The inside was filled with pudding, so it was moist and wonderful. We were big fans :)
270516191.jpg

We cruised around the lagoon from 9:00 until 11:00, and then we returned back to our room. I didn't know it, but my gift from my husband was an oil painting of our dog Molly, who'd been killed last year at the kennel where we boarded here. We'd had Molly for 5 years, and she was our baby, so we were devastated when she died. My sneaky husband had driven out to the GF a few days before our trip and had given the painting to the concierge staff with a request for them to set it up in the room on our anniversary night.

When we got back to the room, this is what we saw:
270516178.jpg

There were rose petals everywhere! They'd spread them in a heart shape on the floor around the couch, on the bed, on the table, on the desk - everywhere! Here is the bed with the rose petals and one red rose:
270516188.jpg

On the desk, they'd sent us yet another bottle of sparkling wine, with rose petals all around it:
270516185.jpg

And on the coffee table, they'd set up a white chocolate Mickey & Minnie figure, along with chocolate covered strawberries, on a plate that said, "Happy Anniversary," in chocolate. Throughout the room, there were several brandy snifters filled with red rose petals and glowing ice cubes, and you can kind of see one in this photo:
270516183.jpg

Here is a closeup of the Mickey & Minnie figure:
270516182.jpg

The whole set up was just extremely decadent and luxurious. We've never in our whole lives been treated so fabulously! We were extremely impressed with the Grand Floridian staff for pulling this together; the surprises just kept coming. We had a lovely trip, and I would definitely arrange for some of these surprises in the future, for our anniversary trips. I know that I can order the strawberries and the room decoration in rose petals, so those are definitely possibilities for future celebrations :)

We felt like they went above & beyond to make up to us for the mistakes in planning, and we truly felt the Grand Floridian magic.

Oh, and I wrote a review of our BWI experience and posted it on the Resorts board, if anyone is interested.

Cheers!
Heather W

That is so great! You where so lucky! Did you tell them when you made the reservation that it was your anniv. Did you have a boat cruise booked or did they comp the whole thing?

Hi! We had a lot of issues with IPO, which got resolved when the concierge manager was put in touch with us. We'd booked the pontoon boat when no one returned our calls for booking the Grand One. We kept calling, over a period of weeks, but by the time we got in touch with them, someone else had booked the Grand One for our anniversary.

As it turned out, we were glad that we didn't get the Grand One. Apparently with its newest incarnation, you can't get out on the bow - you can only sit in the back of the boat or inside the boat. In the hot August evenings, sitting on the bow of the yacht is the best part, so we would have been disappointed if we had, indeed, booked the yacht. Go figure!

Cheers!
Heather W

How many nights did you stay at GF? How was the staff? The gray meat looks yummy! This is our 1st time staying there and cant wait

Heather: WOW! Your GF stay looks like it was just perfect. Did you know they had a private dinner planned, or did they pick the menu for you? If that's the norm for people celebrating an anniversary, then I'm there! I must say though, I don't think I remember ever reading anyone receiving all the goodies you did. The pictures are wonderful, thanks for sharing them.
I just read your review of your BWI visit then came over here to read this one. We're also planning a split stay between both resorts with more days at the BWI -- now I'm a little nervous about that part of the trip.

The gray meat looks yummy!

Now that's a phrase I never thought I'd read :rotfl2:

We did a total of 4 nights stay: 2 at the GF and 2 at the BWI. We had originally planned on 4 nights at the GF, but changed our reservations when we started having issues. The concierge staff we met in the lounge were all okay; no one was rude, but no one was remarkably courteous or personable. Just so-so. The concierge manager who helped us with our planning, though, was great.

Cheers!
