Looks like the candidates are racheting down their rhetoric, perhaps the trickle down will come soon enough.

Former congressman announces for president

The presidential field just grew by one.

Former US Representative Bob Barr of Georgia announced that he will run as a Libertarian this year. He first must win that party's nomination at its national convention that begins May 22.

A conservative former Republican, Barr could end up hurting presumptive GOP nominee John McCain -- just as some Democrats fear that Ralph Nader's independent candidacy could bleed votes from the Democratic nominee.

Barr, 59, who served in Congress from 1995 to 2003, helped lead Bill Clinton's impeachment. He quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism.

In a news conference, Barr said "only a fool" would specify a date and timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. But he said it's "extremely important" and in the best interest of national defense to draw down dramatically the US troop presence in Iraq and decrease the military and political footprint in Iraq.

And the cons thought Nader was funny...

Whilst reading the Conservative Thread (yah, I'm a dirty spy), I came across this joke outlining the areas of the brain as per political affiliation.

Read it here: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=25064566&postcount=1675

It got me thinking about something I'd learnt - casually - a few years back. Apparently, right and left wing people have slightly different makeups.

A quick Google search found me this:

Some provocative research covered by the Chicago Tribune has proposed that the brains of liberals and conservatives work differently.

David Amodio, the primary investigator, found that the anterior cingulate cortex for liberals performs differently, allowing them to think more flexibly.

The work grew out of decades of previous research suggesting that political orientation is linked to certain personality traits or styles of thinking. A review of that research published in 2003 found that conservatives tend to be more rigid and closed-minded, less tolerant of ambiguity and less open to new experiences.

It appears that conservatives have not responded well to this work, and some have taken offense. I personally think this kind of work is a fascinating way to try and understand political orientation, but I wonder how much effect this really has.

Furthermore, it would be even more interesting to find out how this brain region could be influences by environmental factors. Like could learning flexibility as a child create more of this ability structurally as an adult? No matter what, this certainly won’t be the last study on politics and psychobiology.

Interesting to say the least. Search for yourself on Google!

It strikes me that the most potent (if I may use the term) Democratic candidate can be determined by the number of attacks made upon them by Conservatives in general - pre-emptive strikes, as it were.

How is it I finally found this thread? Let's get this party started!

Do a little dance...

Where'd this tired old thread come from? I haven't seen it since we Obama supporters started hating Hillary supporters and vice versa. ;)

Anyone, without getting to crazy, hear anything new about Hillary getting the nod to be Obama's vice president? Would that placate some of the Hillary supporters to vote for Obama or has the Obama campaign and/or the DNC gone too far to alienate you?

Having an Obama/Clinton ticket could be immense - both are superb politicians in their own ways and, I think, could complement each other :)

But, then again, I'm not fully up to speed on the subject.

I like Obama/Clinton ticket! I think the GOP would be scared at that ticket.

In my best Tim "the tool man" Taylor voice: "Crush um like a bug".

I still like that ticket, I think it would be the GOP's worst nightmare. I think that the right wing has been doing a lot behind the scenes to help exacerbate the division of the democratic party. Divide and conquer.

I swear...I have gone back and forth (and back again) on that ticket, and I still don't know how I feel about it. It's hard to imagine bringing Hillary onto the ticket considering some of the things said during this campaign. However...this is politics, not playtime in the Romper Room (anybody else remember that show? ;) ), so there is a big part of me saying, "screw it...we'd win by such a landslide that the neocons would be crying in their Schlitz for the next 4 years". :lmao: I mean...as someone that has defended her for an awful long time on these boards, I have to admit that I'd get a kick outta seeing the reaction from the extreme right to "Vice President Hillary Clinton".

At the same time, I do think there are others that could be better strategic picks in certain ways...but I'm not expert enough in the process to be able to guess which of the possibilities would really bring the most to the table, other than Hillary.

Should be an interesting thing to watch as we go forward. If Hillary drops out after tomorrow's primaries, I think it's a distinct possibility. If she doesn't, then the chances of that ticket probably start going down...rapidly.

I'm not crazy about an Obama/Clinton ticket, but I would support it. The main reason is because I've always thought that whichever Dem won needed to find a very complementary VP. Conservatives would go after either Dem about a lack of military experience, foreign policy experience, and experience in general, so I think the VP should be strong in those areas.

You just found "The Liberal Thread"? You mean you didn't know about 1 and 2?

Welcome aboard. Have fun.

Pick a Republican politician, aim, and fire a stink bomb. :goodvibes

Dream on.....

Pelosi again rules out joint ticket

Pelosi again said a joint ticket with Obama and Clinton won't happen.

(CNN) – The Democratic presidential ticket will be a "Dream Team," Nancy Pelosi said Thursday, it just won’t have both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama's name on it.

Speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, the House Speaker reiterated comments she made earlier in the week that the two presidential candidates will not end up sharing a ticket.

"I do think we will have a dream team, it just won't be those two names," She said. "Whoever our nominee is and whoever he or she is and whoever he or she chooses, will be a dream team as the Democrats go forward.”

When pressed further about the possibility of a joint ticket, Pelosi stated flatly, "Take it from me, that won't be the ticket."

The comments echoed remarks the Speaker made Tuesday, when she emphatically told a Boston television station that a joint ticket with Clinton and Obama is "impossible."

"I think that ticket either way is impossible," she said. "I think that the Clinton administration has fairly ruled that out by proclaiming that Senator McCain would be a better commander-in-Chief than Obama."
