I have been dreading this day all summer. As the day approached, I grew more and more anxious about it. Silly really- when I run 6.2 or more quite regularly and do it with a decent enough time. However, I still found myself nervous.
Lets do a brief walk down memory lane. Last summer, I was very new to running. I had seriously started running sometime around May 2012. By seriously, I mean I had a C25k program I was following and though I couldn't run a mile at that point in May, I was taking it seriously and following the program to the letter.
A series of unfortunate events led to my having peroneal tendonitis at the time of this race. I also had not yet run 6.2 (I don't think) It was also not only my first 10k, but my first running event/race EVER.
The race was brutal. It was hot and I limped much of the distance. I was so tired that I could not even run the entire distance. My stats...
Out of 208 runners, I finished 206th. In my division, I was 16th out of 16 and of all women I was 82nd out of 83. My finish time was 1:17:10 giving me a pace of 12:27. For 2012, the average finish time was 51:51
Some races or routes, I tend to zone out and not remember clearly moments. However this race, I remember moments. Moments where I truly wondered if I might die. Where on particular points on the course, I remember a specific feeling.
So despite knowing I would be fine, I was seriously apprehensive.
Also, I remember that this was a "fast" race. I remembered it enough to agree with Steve that he would get discouraged if he were to just walk it. I was a tad apprehensive about the "fast" race aspect... but I forgot exactly what that meant.
Well, what it meant is that this race has the status of the Pacific Northwest Track & Field 10k championship, a state-wide honor that typically attracts the best runners in Washington. yeah... see why I was nervous?
I didn't sleep well last night. I had dreams I forgot to wear running shoes. I forgot to bring my gear. I forgot to follow the course. I had dreams all night that I had messed up in some way or another. 6am in some ways couldn't have come to soon, because I needed to get this over with.
So 6am came and I got ready. out the door by 7am, I was to the event well in time to pick up my bib and try and settle in. This turned out to be only more time for me to let my nerves get the best of me. With an hour to go, I attempted some self pics. Most I deleted since they all made me look as though I was on the verge of a panic attack. I was.

This one I posted to facebook since I looked a tad less freaked out. (maybe cause I was sitting down
)
I made sure to make a last biostop and then waited for the race to start. I do have a complaint about this course/event. The 5k and 10k start at the same time. So you are running the same course for about half the race. Then the 10k splits off. This causes quite a bit of congestion for the first couple miles. Despite this, I bobbed and weaved and was able to maintain well under a 9 minute pace for those first few miles.
Then my kidneys started "kicking". I say kicking because it kinda feels like getting punched in the back... well, this wasn't fun so I decided I should slow down a bit.
Side note: During the race, my doctor's office called to let me know that they were calling in an extension of the antibiotics they put me on for the kidney infection. Good timing!!!
As I neared the split, I had to over come a panic moment. Last year, that was a hard spot for me. I had felt ok up till that point and then all the 5k runner left me and I was alone on the course. This made me realize how far behind I was to the 10k runners. This year though, there were lots of people turning along side me for the 10k.
I continued to pass people as I neared my next "panic spot". Last year, I had needed a walk break and reached an all time low on the course. This year, I was feeling pretty good, although the humidity was VERY high and it was starting to really take its tole on me. This is probably where I slowed down this year the most. Not just because mentally it was a hard point, but also because physically I was uncomfortable.
As I came to the end of the race, I knew I was going to be ok. I knew that despite how horrid I had felt last year at the same point I had finished strong (ie. without puking) and this year I wasn't feeling no where near as poor. I sprinted over the finish seeing that the gun time was still under an hour. I knew I was going to be ok.
So my stats this year?
I finished 121st out of 176. While this still puts me very much in the last half. I have to appreciate that this race really has "real runners" in it.
I finished 40th out of 73 women total. Again, some of the first women to finish were CRAZY fast.
I finished 5th out of I think 11 in my division (there may have been a couple more... results are not broken down by division yet... and of those in my age group, I can't tell if some are male or female because I don't recognize the name as being gender specific.) I do wish I hadn't slowed in that one spot. 4th in my division had a finish time of 57:19.
What was my finish time? 57:24 giving me a pace of 9:17 The average finish time this year was 52:19. Still slower than average, but again... this isn't a normal "fun run".
So I shaved about 20 minutes off my time from last year. THAT I can certainly be proud of. There is always next year to shoot for that third place trophy. 3rd in my division finished at 51:11. That would be a lofty goal for me since I would need to shave a minute off my per mile pace in order to get to that. Never say never though...
So this wasn't a PR 10k for me, but considering all the obstacles I placed before me on this race, I am not surprised. I still walk away proud. (and VERY glad it is over and I have a new memory of the race)
Oh, and my favorite quote I heard today.... as someone who was running with an injury came up and was disgusted by her time... "ugh, at least it was under 9 minute per mile pace". This totally shows just how different a running crowd this is when someone looks at something over 9 as being atrocious.
AND in case you are all curious as to what the 10k first finishers time was...
30:37 with a pace of 4:56...
