The Great Leap into Running and DVC Ownership.

I have been dreading this day all summer. As the day approached, I grew more and more anxious about it. Silly really- when I run 6.2 or more quite regularly and do it with a decent enough time. However, I still found myself nervous.

Lets do a brief walk down memory lane. Last summer, I was very new to running. I had seriously started running sometime around May 2012. By seriously, I mean I had a C25k program I was following and though I couldn't run a mile at that point in May, I was taking it seriously and following the program to the letter.

A series of unfortunate events led to my having peroneal tendonitis at the time of this race. I also had not yet run 6.2 (I don't think) It was also not only my first 10k, but my first running event/race EVER.

The race was brutal. It was hot and I limped much of the distance. I was so tired that I could not even run the entire distance. My stats...

Out of 208 runners, I finished 206th. In my division, I was 16th out of 16 and of all women I was 82nd out of 83. My finish time was 1:17:10 giving me a pace of 12:27. For 2012, the average finish time was 51:51

Some races or routes, I tend to zone out and not remember clearly moments. However this race, I remember moments. Moments where I truly wondered if I might die. Where on particular points on the course, I remember a specific feeling.

So despite knowing I would be fine, I was seriously apprehensive.

Also, I remember that this was a "fast" race. I remembered it enough to agree with Steve that he would get discouraged if he were to just walk it. I was a tad apprehensive about the "fast" race aspect... but I forgot exactly what that meant.

Well, what it meant is that this race has the status of the Pacific Northwest Track & Field 10k championship, a state-wide honor that typically attracts the best runners in Washington. yeah... see why I was nervous? :scared:

I didn't sleep well last night. I had dreams I forgot to wear running shoes. I forgot to bring my gear. I forgot to follow the course. I had dreams all night that I had messed up in some way or another. 6am in some ways couldn't have come to soon, because I needed to get this over with.

So 6am came and I got ready. out the door by 7am, I was to the event well in time to pick up my bib and try and settle in. This turned out to be only more time for me to let my nerves get the best of me. With an hour to go, I attempted some self pics. Most I deleted since they all made me look as though I was on the verge of a panic attack. I was.

This one I posted to facebook since I looked a tad less freaked out. (maybe cause I was sitting down :rotfl:)

I made sure to make a last biostop and then waited for the race to start. I do have a complaint about this course/event. The 5k and 10k start at the same time. So you are running the same course for about half the race. Then the 10k splits off. This causes quite a bit of congestion for the first couple miles. Despite this, I bobbed and weaved and was able to maintain well under a 9 minute pace for those first few miles.

Then my kidneys started "kicking". I say kicking because it kinda feels like getting punched in the back... well, this wasn't fun so I decided I should slow down a bit.

Side note: During the race, my doctor's office called to let me know that they were calling in an extension of the antibiotics they put me on for the kidney infection. Good timing!!!

As I neared the split, I had to over come a panic moment. Last year, that was a hard spot for me. I had felt ok up till that point and then all the 5k runner left me and I was alone on the course. This made me realize how far behind I was to the 10k runners. This year though, there were lots of people turning along side me for the 10k.

I continued to pass people as I neared my next "panic spot". Last year, I had needed a walk break and reached an all time low on the course. This year, I was feeling pretty good, although the humidity was VERY high and it was starting to really take its tole on me. This is probably where I slowed down this year the most. Not just because mentally it was a hard point, but also because physically I was uncomfortable.

As I came to the end of the race, I knew I was going to be ok. I knew that despite how horrid I had felt last year at the same point I had finished strong (ie. without puking) and this year I wasn't feeling no where near as poor. I sprinted over the finish seeing that the gun time was still under an hour. I knew I was going to be ok. :cool1:

So my stats this year?

I finished 121st out of 176. While this still puts me very much in the last half. I have to appreciate that this race really has "real runners" in it.

I finished 40th out of 73 women total. Again, some of the first women to finish were CRAZY fast.

I finished 5th out of I think 11 in my division (there may have been a couple more... results are not broken down by division yet... and of those in my age group, I can't tell if some are male or female because I don't recognize the name as being gender specific.) I do wish I hadn't slowed in that one spot. 4th in my division had a finish time of 57:19.

What was my finish time? 57:24 giving me a pace of 9:17 The average finish time this year was 52:19. Still slower than average, but again... this isn't a normal "fun run".

So I shaved about 20 minutes off my time from last year. THAT I can certainly be proud of. There is always next year to shoot for that third place trophy. 3rd in my division finished at 51:11. That would be a lofty goal for me since I would need to shave a minute off my per mile pace in order to get to that. Never say never though...

So this wasn't a PR 10k for me, but considering all the obstacles I placed before me on this race, I am not surprised. I still walk away proud. (and VERY glad it is over and I have a new memory of the race)

Oh, and my favorite quote I heard today.... as someone who was running with an injury came up and was disgusted by her time... "ugh, at least it was under 9 minute per mile pace". This totally shows just how different a running crowd this is when someone looks at something over 9 as being atrocious.

AND in case you are all curious as to what the 10k first finishers time was...

30:37 with a pace of 4:56... :faint:

Well the benefit to the cross training is overall strength training which can help avoid injuries, plus giving the body a day of rest on the running. But it isn't the speedwork you are doing on your 2 mile day so who knows. Clearly it's been great for your pace. We run 3, cross train 2.

I guess we all have to do what works best for us, don't we. I just am thinking I might want to throw something else into the mix.

A tenth I get but it can be as much as .75 miles and all of a sudden it is showing elevation when there wasn't any. I may try to re-calibrate the gps on the phone but need to be somewhere with a decent signal (which is NOT my house lol). I actually sent in a report on it today. The watch did map what I thought the route really was and my pace came in about what I thought it would be so at least thanks to my going online and editing everything after each run, instead of believing what it said, it's about where I thought it was. Which is of course not where I want it to be :rotfl2: Then again it was 82 degrees out and humid as heck. LOL!

That is very frustrating! I am glad you got a watch. I bet it will work much better for you. And the heat and humidity is REALLY taking its tole on me. (or maybe it is the fact that I have been sick for the last month..ack)

It's funny, I know I could try other aps but I do like the RK log system quite a bit and how it works with my playlists/music so really don't want to try a different one. I have tried a couple of others but haven't liked the interface nearly as well.

I think is is why I keep it and accept it isn't exact, but.. I think it is closer for me than what you are seeing. I think if I were having those same sorts of issues I would be more likely to figure out my watch.

Something tells me that was your pace on that 9 mile run last weekend...maybe not so generous after all. :rolleyes1 If it were princess I bet you'd be in A...donald probably B if it matches up with the DL 1/2.

Was it? :rotfl2: I had to go back and look. Yeah.. I guess RK had me with a 9:39 pace. Course... who knows how accurate that was. :lmao: Plus... that would be another 4 miles... I am sure I would slow by at least 10 seconds per mile over the course of 4 more miles.

You put a lot of pressure on yourself! Just have fun. And...it went well!!! Which race (where) was it? No more till ToT, right?

I was totally silly about it for sure! It was the Snoqualmie railroad days 10k. Such a beautiful course. I just LOVE this promoters races. They are truly the best outside of disney. Nice shirt, well labeled course and accurate results. Plus he is great about picking the best locations in the N. Bend/snoqualmie area.

As for no more till Tot... well, Tot is in October. That leaves September to do an event (since I try to do one a month). Since mid September I will work into a taper, I might look for a 5k.... we will see.

That sucks that it hasn't cleared up more yet.

Very nice stats! That is a fast race, I'm intimidated to even try running with that kind of crowd. I'd be happy at under an hour. I think/hope I can pull it off but it will be close.

Oh, and my favorite quote I heard today.... as someone who was running with an injury came up and was disgusted by her time... "ugh, at least it was under 9 minute per mile pace". I think it's a good idea, can't hurt!

That is very frustrating! I am glad you got a watch. I bet it will work much better for you. And the heat and humidity is REALLY taking its tole on me. (or maybe it is the fact that I have been sick for the last month..ack)

well if it's taking a toll, it's not showing in your pace lately

I think is is why I keep it and accept it isn't exact, but.. I think it is closer for me than what you are seeing. I think if I were having those same sorts of issues I would be more likely to figure out my watch.

I am glad I got it, still will likely use RK as my log though and then adjust to match. Although last nights run, RK will not let me adjust which really peeves me. I keep getting this Oh Noes message.

Was it? :rotfl2: I had to go back and look. Yeah.. I guess RK had me with a 9:39 pace. Course... who knows how accurate that was. :lmao: Plus... that would be another 4 miles... I am sure I would slow by at least 10 seconds per mile over the course of 4 more miles.

yeah but race adrenaline will likely chop off 5 seconds of that.

I was totally silly about it for sure! It was the Snoqualmie railroad days 10k. Such a beautiful course. I just LOVE this promoters races. They are truly the best outside of disney. I love it up there, but the fastness of that is a bit freaky to me.

As for no more till Tot... well, Tot is in October. That leaves September to do an event (since I try to do one a month). Since mid September I will work into a taper, I might look for a 5k.... we will see.

One a month, that's a lot! Good for you though.

Wow, Ann! Congratulations. Even though it wasn't a PR, you overcame some fears from the first time. I have done a couple of jogs lately and am well over 11 min miles. That's why I call them jogs. Yesterday I did a short mile with Sandy (dog) and we did it in just under 12 minutes, with a short period of walking. But it was hot in Austin, there were hills, and there was humidity.

You inspire me to see how much I could improve if I would jog/run more consistently. I do get bored with my roads here, so I'd need to find somewhere else to try to jog. I'm not very motivated to get into a car to find a place to jog though.

Congrats again! I love watching your running journey!

And by the way, I can't do a 5k in the time that winner did his/her 10k! Wow!

Ok clearly not the best race for a first one. Yikes!

Yes and no. It was a very nice course. Flat...elevation was good...etc. It is just hard to be the last one to finish.

yeah... not sure what is up with my dreams. Last night I dreamt I went to work without shoes. :rotfl2:

That sucks that it hasn't cleared up more yet.

Yeah, by last night I was really hurting and kept getting the chills so I figure my temp was going up and down. Yay for more antibiotics though cause waking, my back pain is gone again.

Very nice stats! That is a fast race, I'm intimidated to even try running with that kind of crowd. I'd be happy at under an hour. I think/hope I can pull it off but it will be close.

As fast as that crowd is, I shouldn't make it sound like they are bad to run around. Even that gal who scoffed at her time... well, she was scoffing at HER time. Not mine... I just found it funny. That is one thing I love about events is everyone - no matter how fast - is so welcoming and accepting.

You will totally be able to pull of a sub hour 10k!

well if it's taking a toll, it's not showing in your pace lately

I feel it... and I do see it in my pace. My pace from last month is faster than this month. Not a lot faster, and I suppose that even could be attributed to heat. Mainly though, I can feel how much harder this last month has been for me.

I am glad I got it, still will likely use RK as my log though and then adjust to match. Although last nights run, RK will not let me adjust which really peeves me. I keep getting this Oh Noes message.

I didn't even know you could adjust. I know I have an online account too... but the ap and the online dont synch up for me. (online has me with no activities) I do like RK for logging. It works well for that. I can see at a glance (roughly) what I have done for the last year.

yeah but race adrenaline will likely chop off 5 seconds of that.

:rotfl: You have too much faith in me.

I love it up there, but the fastness of that is a bit freaky to me.

Don't let me scare you with it. I really do like the events there. It is only the railroad days that is the championship race. The turkey trot was geared toward families... and while the course was a tad hilly and didn't run along the river... it was still nice enough. Plus last year it included a huge pancake breakfast! YUM!!!! I am so funny... terrified to redo the railroad days, but the turkey trot I am super excited for. Course... that one was fun. Ran it with Zach... had a good amount of us up there for the event. AND I was fed right after. It was one of my all time favorite events.

One a month, that's a lot! Good for you though.

Well, I am trying to attend each adventure run in Kent. (that was thursday, I should recap that as well) Then I try and do something. Last month was the color in motion 5k. We live in such a great area. There are SO many events to choose from.

Wow, Ann! Congratulations. Even though it wasn't a PR, you overcame some fears from the first time.

Thanks so much, Susan. :goodvibes This has been a hard month for my running and I think all my original fears were just compounded by other garbage. I am just happy that I got it over with.

I have done a couple of jogs lately and am well over 11 min miles. That's why I call them jogs. Yesterday I did a short mile with Sandy (dog) and we did it in just under 12 minutes, with a short period of walking. But it was hot in Austin, there were hills, and there was humidity.

Jogging...running.... you are MOVING! That is what matters. Good for you for getting out there. I bet Sandy enjoyed it too, yes? (and yes, I knew Sandy was your dog ;))

You inspire me to see how much I could improve if I would jog/run more consistently. I do get bored with my roads here, so I'd need to find somewhere else to try to jog. I'm not very motivated to get into a car to find a place to jog though.

I am sure you could. I know that it may not sound good to some when I say it... but truly I feel if I can do this - then just about anyone can! You do need to find a place that will be fun for you to run though. Getting bored with anything doesn't tend to make us want to do it over an over again. So that will be important to overcome in the event you are trying to get a regular routine going.

Congrats again! I love watching your running journey!

Thank you again, it means a lot to me to have you say that. I tend to be an over sharer... and that can rub some people the wrong way.

And by the way, I can't do a 5k in the time that winner did his/her 10k! Wow!

Right!!!???!!! It was funny, cause I was probably around mile 3 where I could see across a field to about where mile 4.5 was. (maybe even closer to 5) and I saw a series of orange tanked men fly by. They looked to be in full sprint. ZOOM!

Yes and no. It was a very nice course. Flat...elevation was good...etc. It is just hard to be the last one to finish.

Exactly, ok for a later race in the adventure but maybe not the first...it does sound pretty. I am hoping we will finally make it up there over labor day weekend, it's been too long and I am missing my mountain and river big time. We've actually been up there for RR days before, just not the run lol.

Impressed you did a 10K for your first, not a 5K.

yeah... not sure what is up with my dreams. Last night I dreamt I went to work without shoes. :rotfl2:

well you have had shoe drama....just don't go to work with shoes that are different colored from each other :rotfl2: blue and black can look exactly the same if you get dressed in the dark...

Yeah, by last night I was really hurting and kept getting the chills so I figure my temp was going up and down. Yay for more antibiotics though cause waking, my back pain is gone again.

REST ok???? you need to kick this.

That's good, I think I've been around too many running snobs...like my brother...his ex-GF, and Jeff's ex friends (a couple) who I SWEAR "dropped" us because I wasn't a runner and as a result, Jeff didn't work out enough for their tastes. That kind of arrogance and ultra competitiveness I do not need in my life. My co worker and his wife that are doing the DDD this year are both hoping for PR's. She is fast...like did a 1:40 at Tink last year. AND got pictures. I hate her. :rotfl: not really. But he is cool about it, he's not nearly as fast (or as young as she is) he is just out there having a blast and that's what counts. He's hoping for 2:10 at the half, which for a guy his size...is pretty darn fast if you ask me.

You will totally be able to pull of a sub hour 10k!

Hope so. We will find out in October. I've only run that distance twice so far. 1st time was 6.31 at 1:00:47, 2nd time was 6.3 at 1:03:31. Both times were not remotely flat (about 500-525 in elevation gain) and the 2nd one was at a mile high elevation and I was not pushing myself (other than to finish and feel good....abiding by the whole "long run can't be too slow" thing...which doesn't make me go slower but also doesn't really make me go fast either). In Denver I did have one short walk break too.

So...it's possible I think but not a for sure yet. I need to get more runs in at that distance and further. I'd really like to get my "normal" pace down just a little, consistently at that 4-6 mile distance, to really feel good about it. Right now there's no wiggle room lol. I've got over 2 months so we will see. Selfishly too, I'm glad it will be cooler then as that should help :lmao:

I feel it... and I do see it in my pace. My pace from last month is faster than this month. Not a lot faster, and I suppose that even could be attributed to heat. Mainly though, I can feel how much harder this last month has been for me.

You can't adjust on the app but usually you can online, it's how I knew things were off. Sometimes horribly, sometimes not. But that assumes it's synching. You should see if you can get yours to synch. I did try to recalibrate my phone's gps last night, we will see if that pays off on tonights run as I plan to use both RK and the watch to see.

:rotfl: You have too much faith in me.

Oh you are pretty motivated...I have faith in that. :lmao:

Don't let me scare you with it. I really do like the events there. It is only the railroad days that is the championship race. If I didn't host turkey day at my house each year, that would honestly be super tempting. But I'm always up doing prep the night before, then up early to make pies and watch the parade and get the bird in the oven. It's only 45 min to get there from our house so not bad at all. Only way I could manage it is if I put Evan in charge of both the pie and the turkey. Which he could probably do but....I'd be a bit of a wreck!

Well, I am trying to attend each adventure run in Kent. (that was thursday, I should recap that as well) Then I try and do something. Last month was the color in motion 5k. We live in such a great area. There are SO many events to choose from.

You did an adventure run on Thursday AND the 10K yesterday...AND are still fighting a Kidney Infection. And you wonder why you had chills last night. REST!!!!

Had to jump in on that one...me too :goodvibes

Impressed you did a 10K for your first, not a 5K.

I needed it for POT for the TOT last year. It was pushing it to get that 10k in and yes, a 5k might have been an easier race.

well you have had shoe drama....just don't go to work with shoes that are different colored from each other :rotfl2: blue and black can look exactly the same if you get dressed in the dark...

:lmao: so do black and brown. so ::yes:: I know what you mean!!!

REST ok???? you need to kick this.

I am trying. I slept in a bit... trying not to putter around my very messy house. Trying to keep my but planted either watching tv or playing at the computer...AND hydrating. Maybe if I push enough fluids today that will help too.

That's good, I think I've been around too many running snobs...like my brother...his ex-GF, and Jeff's ex friends (a couple) who I SWEAR "dropped" us because I wasn't a runner and as a result, Jeff didn't work out enough for their tastes. I bet there is always the exception to the friendly runners. It is also easy to push people away when you don't mean to. I know I have to be careful. I tend to like to say if I can do this anyone can... but... I was corrected recently that not everyone can. So while I am just trying to be encouraging, I come across as pushy and a know it all.

Your coworkers wife, btw... that is CRAZY fast!!! She must run like a 7 minute mile pace (or a tad less if she is stopping for pics)

Hope so. We will find out in October. I've only run that distance twice so far. 1st time was 6.31 at 1:00:47, 2nd time was 6.3 at 1:03:31. In Denver I did have one short walk break too.

You are so close. I would think it won't take too much more training (and or a better route) and you will be there.

So...it's possible I think but not a for sure yet. I need to get more runs in at that distance and further. I'd really like to get my "normal" pace down just a little, consistently at that 4-6 mile distance, to really feel good about it. Right now there's no wiggle room lol. I am so looking forward to some cooler temps to run in. Maybe not as cold as on the days where freezing rain hit my face... but definitely would take cool enough to wear a jacket. It helps with pace, I am sure. So you should have some good times come fall!

Looks like this year will be on 11/9 . I will definitely be doing it. It is actually the only one of theirs that I will be doing for the rest of the year.
Here is a link to their races. I don't think it really lists details other than dates.

You did an adventure run on Thursday AND the 10K yesterday...AND are still fighting a Kidney Infection. And you wonder why you had chills last night. REST!!!!

Well, adventure runs are not that big of a deal. More fun than anything else. I even cut my miles back that day in anticipation for that night and yesterday.

Had to jump in on that one...me too :goodvibes

I am so glad I am not alone in that!!!

True. Although that candy/ice cream shop is yummy, even solo!

I needed it for POT for the TOT last year. It was pushing it to get that 10k in and yes, a 5k might have been an easier race.

Ah, that makes sense and probably at least got you out of the last corrall didn't it?

:lmao: so do black and brown. so ::yes:: I know what you mean!!!

Yes, I've learned NOT to buy almost identical shoes in different colors. It helps avoid the issue.

I am trying. I slept in a bit... trying not to putter around my very messy house. Trying to keep my but planted either watching tv or playing at the computer...AND hydrating. Maybe if I push enough fluids today that will help too.

Hydrating will definitely help and is something I really need to work on in general.

Mental challenges are as real as physical ones and both can turn into a can't for whatever reason. And, it's real to that person even if hard to understand at times. It is hard for me not to put how I would handle something on someone else but the bottom line is I am not them and they have to do what is right for them even if it seems wrong to me and if I care about them, I have to support them no matter what. Which isn't always easy. Honestly I think Jeff still believes I can ride my bike. I "can" but I shouldn't. I will pay for it if I do it and it's not worth it. For very real physical reasons that he knows...but I think deep down doesn't really believe.

Then again there is "can" versus "want". I've always known I could run, I just didn't want to. I didn't like it, it wasn't easy, it wasn't fun and I wasn't invested enough to want to turn those things around. And while I (and you I suspect lol) am a strong believer in mind over matter, it just isn't how everyone works.

Your coworkers wife, btw... that is CRAZY fast!!! She must run like a 7 minute mile pace (or a tad less if she is stopping for pics)

Well she is a good couple of decades younger than me so...:lmao: but I do think she has always run and heaven knows it's cool that her DH is on board with it, he did his first marathon this summer and is clearly having a blast without being crazy about it so it's cute. I've never met her but I adore him.

You are so close. I would think it won't take too much more training (and or a better route) and you will be there.

Honestly I suspect the real issue is that I am more motivated by distance than by speed. I am increasing the miles but confess to really not trying on the speed at all, or pushing it while I am out. Ever. :lmao: At some point I really should, just not sure when that will be. Even though I know that is the way to increase the speed I think a huge part of me just hopes that over time with simply upping the mileage a little and consistency, the speed increase will come. But in reality it's a different kind of training and I do know that. I "can" do it. At the moment don't really "want" to. :rotfl: I'd rather just run 7 miles, or 8 instead to know I can. However, not sure I "want" to run more than 8 until I "have" to. Hee hee.

Funny side note though about training plans as I'd love your thoughts. General rule seems to be not to try to increase your miles by more than 10% a week. Yet some of the plans will up the long run but a mile each week. Which early on is obviously more than 10%!

I am so looking forward to some cooler temps to run in. Maybe not as cold as on the days where freezing rain hit my face... but definitely would take cool enough to wear a jacket. It helps with pace, I am sure. So you should have some good times come fall!

Yes, the cooler weather will likely help and I did take advantage of a recent sale to at least get a couple of tops for that to run in.

Looks like this year will be on 11/9 . I will definitely be doing it. It is actually the only one of theirs that I will be doing for the rest of the year.
Here is a link to their races. I don't think it really lists details other than dates.

Hmmn. I will think about it. The 10K we are doing is 10/27 so that might be a bit close. But it's a 5K so could be good one to do with my sister.

Well, adventure runs are not that big of a deal. More fun than anything else. I even cut my miles back that day in anticipation for that night and yesterday.

uh huh. So you ran regular miles (less but still) and did the adventure run and then the 6K.:sad2: you crack me up (and make me look lazy!). Although I have been pretty lazy outside of the normal workouts this weekend. Hadn't really planned to be but had a bit of a bizarre injury yesterday I broke a bowl while doing dishes and cut my wrist. Really dodged a bullet on it but we were pretty paranoid about it yesterday as it was quite deep so I laid very low.

I am so glad I am not alone in that!!!

nope

Ah, that makes sense and probably at least got you out of the last corrall didn't it?

It did. When we got to the expo and showed the POT, we were each moved from D (our placement without POT) to C. Honestly, I doubt we would have finished the race had we remained in D. With our pace, we were over the requirement so I am sure the sweepers would have nabbed us.

Yes, I've learned NOT to buy almost identical shoes in different colors. It helps avoid the issue.

See, I like to tend to find a shoe and like it...then buy it in other colors. It does cause me to really have to make sure that I am wearing a matched set.

I definitely need to work on this. I do attempt to see things through the eyes of others, but there is still room for improvement. Especially when it comes to just taking what they say or feel at face value and not still having my own interpretation.

See and that is where I get into trouble with my own interpretation. Someone tells me they can't... and I appreciate where they sit and how they would feel that way, but ultimately I might think that they don't want to. I need to not do that!!!

And yes, you are correct... I am a strong believer in mind over matter. :goodvibes

Honestly I suspect the real issue is that I am more motivated by distance than by speed. I am increasing the miles but confess to really not trying on the speed at all, or pushing it while I am out. Ever. :lmao: At some point I really should, just not sure when that will be. Actually, I think this is a good plan! I think that speed will come after you are comfortable with a distance. I even agree with the not wanting to go more miles until you have to. I run a routine mileage (in theory...when I am feeling well) So in doing that... I get accustom to a distance and in theory, my time for those distances improves.

Funny side note though about training plans as I'd love your thoughts. General rule seems to be not to try to increase your miles by more than 10% a week. Yet some of the plans will up the long run but a mile each week. Which early on is obviously more than 10%!

I know! :confused3 I have always wondered about that. It seems like a rule that is never actually followed in training plans. I mean... mile for mile it would only be a tenth of a mile increase. So run five miles and increase by a half a mile. Yet... yeah... often plans go up MUCH faster than that. If you run one mile on week one... going to 2 miles on week two breaks that rule. Increasing by a mile means you will have had to have been running 10... and believe me... if you run ten... adding the mile is nothing. I think you have to increase by what you are comfortable with. For me a half mile seems to be ok to add to each of my runs.

Hmmn. I will think about it. The 10K we are doing is 10/27 so that might be a bit close. But it's a 5K so could be good one to do with my sister.

Do think about it. I mean...especially if there is the breakfast again. :rotfl2: I realize it probably isn't actually great food. But after a run any and all food is so amazing to me. So my memory of the breakfast is that it was SOOOO good!

uh huh. So you ran regular miles (less but still) and did the adventure run and then the 6K.:sad2: you crack me up (and make me look lazy!).

Ok, so maybe I really did need to take a down day today. But.. thursday really was in total what I was scheduled for and then saturday was less.... so while it may seem like a lot it really wasn't.

I have been pretty lazy outside of the normal workouts this weekend. Hadn't really planned to be but had a bit of a bizarre injury yesterday I broke a bowl while doing dishes and cut my wrist. Really dodged a bullet on it but we were pretty paranoid about it yesterday as it was quite deep so I laid very low.

Oh my! That is not good! I hope it is ok and didn't require stitches.

Actually I think it's ok that you think that but the thing is that even if it is true (and they don't realize it is) it's ok for them not to want to. I think the hard part is admitting even to yourself, and then others, that you really don't want to. Much easier to say I can't as it's an out. It can be a real out, even if the "can't" is a bit subjective. Lord knows I've used it!

And yes, you are correct... I am a strong believer in mind over matter. :goodvibes

The challenge is figuring out what really matters and whether it's worth putting you mind to. LOL!

I hope so. It's been slowly creeping up so I'm not really at a standard/routine mileage yet but am really getting close to it. I was kind of hoping for a long run today but poor Jeff has been working his tail off on his plane and is worn out so I agreed to move our run to tomorrow instead. Which means it will be a bit shorter esp as it will be a new route (Evan has TKD outside tomorrow at a local park so we will run from that location) so will be winging it a bit. I will beat last months mileage so that's cool. But then beating it after that...I have a feeling it will probably stay pretty stable for some time, 60-70 mile range per month until I actually start training for the DL half which would be the end of April.

Yeah, it's definitely just been a "gut" thing so far and certainly the jump to 6 was straight from 5. I figure I've averaged about a 16% increase on a weekly basis since I started but am pretty close to topping out at what will likely be my weekly average...unless I get faster. The monthly numbers are much larger but will be closer to the 10% this month and the likely flattening out. But that may be ok to just be at a set mileage for a bit and see how (if) it improves.

Some of it (the training plans) seem counter intuitive. Like having a long run one week and then it drops back down to 3 miles the next, and then up again the next....in theory if I was really following the plan I have I should have done 7 miles last week, but 6.3 is what fit based on being on vacation and it should be 8 next weekend. I figure I'll go for something a bit over 7 but not all the way to 8.

Do think about it. I mean...especially if there is the breakfast again. :rotfl2: I realize it probably isn't actually great food. But after a run any and all food is so amazing to me. So my memory of the breakfast is that it was SOOOO good!

I will, that could be fun and sounds like something my sister would be into and since it's a 5K it could work. Funny though, I am SO not hungry after a run (though admittedly only have the 6 mile ones as true references). About 45 min to hour after I'm starving but right away, not at all.

Ok, so maybe I really did need to take a down day today. But.. thursday really was in total what I was scheduled for and then saturday was less.... so while it may seem like a lot it really wasn't.

You need to get better. As long as that takes.

No, we didn't go in, but were afraid we'd have to. Very bad spot, very lucky.

Hi! Joining in on your PTR. I've been trying to find some running oriented ones as I am new to runDisney and its been a while since I've done much running (plantar fasciitis years ago stopped me). I am signed up for the ToT and the GSC although I will do a walk/run method to make it through them!

Read through your whole PTR so far...sounds like you have a full plate and are doing a great job juggling it all.

Definitely!

Your mileage is very very impressive! 60 to 70 a month is substantial enough...enough that you are gonna burn through shoes... :rotfl: at least that is the reason I give for going through so many!

I am just doing a set mileage... I wonder if I need to actually start a legit training plan... I like to think it is working ok for me right now.

I agree, some times I just don't understand the plans... they do seem counterintuitive I feel it is best to do what works for you... but then again, I am no expert and if the experts say something..even if I don't understand it... maybe I am wrong.

I am not so hungry right away either... but about in time it takes me to drink my powerade, I am famished.

You need to get better. As long as that takes.

I am actually feeling close to normal today. So thank you! :goodvibes

No, we didn't go in, but were afraid we'd have to. Very bad spot, very lucky.

I am sorry..that sounds like it was probably scary!

:welcome: I am glad you were able to find my PTR. It is bound to be run heavy... with a pinch of my whining and being dramatic about life. But thank you for your kind words. I pretend to juggle everything well. ;)

How exciting to be doing your first RD events! ToT was my first too. (I have a TR from that trip) RD events are super fun!! Sorry about the PF.... I have heard that can be extremely painful!!!

The crazy thing about running is there are so many different levels and so many different abilities. Mother nature gave those fast people the right genes. For us average souls its just for a love of the freedom that running brings. :thumbsup2

Sounds like you did really well with your race. congrats!

So for those of you who have read ANY of my PTRs, you will not be surprised when I throw in a little airfare drama. :rotfl:

I have yet to nail down airfare and while I still have time, I noticed something yesterday.

My preference for airfare is one of two carriers. SW or Alaska. Often SW is the cheaper and the fact that they have 2 free bags has been putting them ahead of Alaska. However, I have a companion fare on Alaska that I thought would average the cost of two tickets less than that of SW.

Well, I noticed that airfare on alaska had come down to what I wanted...so I went to take a closer look at the fare. WELL... the companion fare is now subject to full taxes. (is that new for all carriers? Makes me wonder if I am using points is there going to be a hefty fee?) Anyway, it took the cost of two fares up by almost $100 more than I was anticipating. Ok... not the END of the world. That is just $50 more pp...so I can get over that. Then I noticed something else.

Schedules. Because of a special ADR we HAVE to arrive early enough for dinner. Yet, the flight that is affordable on either carrier puts us getting in too late. EXCEPT, Alaska now has some strange flights from SEA to SFO and then SFO to MCO. I could... take a flight to SFO the night before we are currently planning. Stay in a hotel that night in San Fran... and then have a nice morning breakfast before flying a direct flight from SFO to MCO. This flight would get us in on time. It is tempting....and I was surprised when Steve thought it would be easy and fun. This option would increase our expenses slightly since we will add a hotel night in sanfran. However, it is one of the cheapest options for a flight down to MCO

Does that sound like a crazy idea? (to stay the night in San Fran) I also am going to wait a bit and see what the flight I was actually hoping to get drops. I think right now it is something over $400 just for the one way. If that dropped, it would be the best option since it would get us in at the right time. SW is kinda out unless they add more flights to that day. (currently there is two) So does it sound silly that I would hope for fares to drop just a slight bit more?

So there is my airfare drama for the day. I am sure there will be more to come. ;)

I think a night in San Francisco would be nice! Change of scenery! Especially if Steve is down with the idea!

The airfare stalking queen is back in full force! We were just texting about this... When? Day before yesterday lol!

Is this the new route where you two got a bit off track? ;)

:lmao: it was SO funny! It should have been a simple route. About 2 blocks, take a right, run 2 miles down, turn around and come back. The down was easy, a route we know, goes down by a golf course, lake, soccer fields we've spent plenty of time at. Though honestly a bit hillier than I realized...funny how different things are in your car. :rotfl2: Coming back...neither of us remembered which street to turn left on. Jeff passed me just before the turn around, which is normal. Coming back he turned way too early, went way too far left and doubled back. The streets don't go through in many spots so it's a bit tricky. Me, I turned too early, then turned the wrong way, realized it, turned back, stopped, checked my phone for a map, headed back the right way and then still turned right when I should have gone left. I'd have figured it out about a block after he caught me but it was pretty funny that he saw me, saw me turn the wrong way and chased me down. That's love for you.

Should have been a little 4 mile run, was a bit over 5 for both of us, with all of our turn arounds we both went equally too far. I was happy for the mileage but stressed a little about the time. Thankfully despite it all, we made it back to the park on time, right when Evan's class ended.

Funny thing is, part of my distraction was that I didn't lock the gps signal on the watch before starting. So was trying to get it to lock while running. Gave up. RK actually was pretty dead on for once though. I recalibrated the GPS on Sunday, we will see if it is better on the normal routes or not. However, I was still VERY glad I had the watch on as I could see the time for Evan's class and gauge whether I'd run into an issue or not and knew I'd likely be just fine despite all my directional challenges.. I'd have been very stressed without it and trying to read time on my phone while running and I"m too much of a klutz for that.

It does bug me though that Jeff doesn't run with a phone, I'd have had no way to find or track him.

Your mileage is very very impressive! 60 to 70 a month is substantial enough...enough that you are gonna burn through shoes... :rotfl: at least that is the reason I give for going through so many!

I'm a bit worried about September. It is looking like I have 3 trips (2 work and one personal) and it's going to be a bit of a challenge, I'm going to have to really plan as I do NOT want to get on that darn treadmill. October is almost as bad. Sigh. Busy time for work for sure.

Jeff is cheap, he will only do one pair of shoes a year. He knows he should probably do more but it's the principle of the thing. Then again he never has foot issues or really any other running related aches so apparently it works for him.

I am just doing a set mileage... I wonder if I need to actually start a legit training plan... I like to think it is working ok for me right now.

It seems like it is working great for you, why mess with it?

I agree, some times I just don't understand the plans... they do seem counterintuitive I feel it is best to do what works for you... but then again, I am no expert and if the experts say something..even if I don't understand it... maybe I am wrong.

I agree, Jeff is pretty anti training plan. And really if there was a magic plan...there wouldn't be so many out there!

I am not so hungry right away either... but about in time it takes me to drink my powerade, I am famished.

Ugh, I can't drink that stuff. Water. I know at some point I'll have to try and find something I like but ugh, I can't stand any of it.

I am actually feeling close to normal today. So thank you! :goodvibes

YAY!

So for those of you who have read ANY of my PTRs, you will not be surprised when I throw in a little airfare drama. :rotfl:

I have yet to nail down airfare and while I still have time, I noticed something yesterday.

Ok... not the END of the world. That is just $50 more pp...so I can get over that. Then I noticed something else.

How much are the taxes? I can tell you if booking Alaska on miles it's just a $2.50 fee.

It is tempting....and I was surprised when Steve thought it would be easy and fun. This option would increase our expenses slightly since we will add a hotel night in sanfran. However, it is one of the cheapest options for a flight down to MCO

So would you be buying 2 tickets? That would seem like it would cost more. The SF layovers aren't long enough for a whole night are they? Delta has a red eye through SFO at a decent price usually but I think it's only a 3 hour layover, which just makes the whole thing painful.

I'd look at the hotel cost versus the direct ticket difference. Not so sure about easy and fun. Unless you stay right at SFO you are talking about getting luggage, getting to a hotel, getting back to the airport etc. BART is easy but still it will take some time.

Does that sound like a crazy idea? (to stay the night in San Fran) I also am going to wait a bit and see what the flight I was actually hoping to get drops. I think right now it is something over $400 just for the one way. If that dropped, it would be the best option since it would get us in at the right time. So there is my airfare drama for the day. I am sure there will be more to come. ;)

The flights are tough at that time, I'm tracking a ton for my family. We got a great rate for the return (well great enough for that time, $171) and it seems like there are several at that price on SW, it is the outbound that is tough. The reality is though, even with a direct it's next to impossible to get there early enough for an ADR before say, 7 to be safe. Darn time change!

Too bad you can't convince your gang to do the red eye...

I think a night in San Francisco would be nice! Change of scenery! Especially if Steve is down with the idea!

I am not sure I totally like the idea. Steve may like it... but I think he is just thinking of how he may be able to fit in a trip to his favorite breakfast restaurant.

The airfare stalking queen is back in full force! We were just texting about this... When? Day before yesterday lol!

I am ALWAYS stalking airfare!! :rotfl:

I guess new routes can be tricky... I try and drive them first, but you are totally right...things look different from the car. I am just glad you made it back safe and sound. :goodvibes

Man, that can really lessen the enjoyment of a run when you are worried you will get back in time for something. I am glad you made it back in time.

Yeah, don't look at your phone and run. At least not in a serious way. maybe a glimpse. However if you eyes are like mine and your phone is as well...the time is hard to see on the phone while running. And... before I switched to a smart phone... I actually broke my hand when I was out running and chose to look at my phone. Long story short... Steve said I shouldn't get a smart phone..just use my reg. one and set a stop watch. Well, looked at the watch on the phone and BLAM! Down I went. Good tumble...hit the pavement hard. Ended up facing the direction I had just come from. With skinned knees and what I later learned was a broken hand (well, kinda it was boxers fracture) I walked nearly the mile home.

So yeah... don't look at your phone while running.... No good comes from it ;)

It does bug me though that Jeff doesn't run with a phone, I'd have had no way to find or track him.

What is it with guys and doing this? I mean... Steve is pretty good now, but the first time he went out for a long distance, he had no phone with him. and I couldn't figure out why it was taking him so long. I ended up driving around to try and find him.

I'm a bit worried about September. It is looking like I have 3 trips (2 work and one personal) and it's going to be a bit of a challenge, I'm going to have to really plan as I do NOT want to get on that darn treadmill. October is almost as bad. Sigh. Busy time for work for sure.

That is rough! I am lucky that I mostly can find the time somewhere to get out and run. However I have had to resort to a treadmill once and :sad2: So not fun. I know there are some who really like them... but I am just not one of them. Course, I dont watch tv while on it... and those I know who like theirs do. Maybe if I had something to watch it would make it better....

Jeff is cheap, he will only do one pair of shoes a year. He knows he should probably do more but it's the principle of the thing. Then again he never has foot issues or really any other running related aches so apparently it works for him.

I think I probably suffer a tad quicker than most do. If I wear the bottoms down... I start to feel aches and pains. The upper of my shoes look great... so it is such a shame that they get retired. I mean, I can still wear them for other activities... I am hoping that I can get to a point where I can get 400 miles out of a pair of shoes. (the nikes are good for like 100)

It seems like it is working great for you, why mess with it?

I don't know. I probably shouldn't. I just something worry that what I think I know isn't actually what I should know. (if that makes any sense.)

I agree, Jeff is pretty anti training plan. And really if there was a magic plan...there wouldn't be so many out there!

That is true... so probably the idea that you have to do what works best for you is totally a legitimate notion.

Ugh, I can't drink that stuff. Water. I know at some point I'll have to try and find something I like but ugh, I can't stand any of it.

I drink water while I run... but after some sort of electrolyte drink. Have you tried Nuun? They have some pretty good flavors...but kinda do have a vitamin taste.

How much are the taxes? I can tell you if booking Alaska on miles it's just a $2.50 fee.

Yeah, I booked my return flight for next months trip on miles...and only had to spend $2.50. The taxes on the companion fare are almost $50. Kinda irritates me. I mean... it was one thing to have the card and pay an annual fee when the oop companion fare was $50. Then it went to $99 (plus maybe under $10 for taxes) Now this takes it up to about $150...and with the annual fee and the fact usually the fares are higher than SW anyway... we are not saving anything.

So would you be buying 2 tickets? That would seem like it would cost more. The SF layovers aren't long enough for a whole night are they? Delta has a red eye through SFO at a decent price usually but I think it's only a 3 hour layover, which just makes the whole thing painful.

I know it is going to sound bad...but Steve and I each have an alaska card. So we each have a companion fare we can use... Works out perfect in theory. We buy two tickets... and get two companions. The layover in SF is actually like 13 hours. Flight lands around 9pm and takes off the next morning at about 10am. I am reconsidering this option though. It seems like it might be just too much of a head ache.

I'd look at the hotel cost versus the direct ticket difference. Not so sure about easy and fun. Unless you stay right at SFO you are talking about getting luggage, getting to a hotel, getting back to the airport etc. BART is easy but still it will take some time.

EXACTLY

The flights are tough at that time, I'm tracking a ton for my family. We got a great rate for the return (well great enough for that time, $171) and it seems like there are several at that price on SW, it is the outbound that is tough. The reality is though, even with a direct it's next to impossible to get there early enough for an ADR before say, 7 to be safe. Darn time change!

Too bad you can't convince your gang to do the red eye...

Given that Steve is planning to run the half... I KNOW he will not be up for a red eye. In fact, I wonder if this is contributing to him liking the Sanfran idea. We wouldn't lose sleep going down. Then we could actually sleep in until maybe 6 or so before needing to get back to the airport. Unlike here where we will have to get up by 3am.

Oh no! Did you end up in cast? Evan had a boxer break...cast for 6 weeks!

I actually run with RX sunglasses on so I can read the phone. However, I'm more worried about it slipping out of my hand so rarely rarely take it out mid run.

Jeff's position is that he's been doing this for over 30 years without a phone or an ipod and doesn't want one now. And now that I'm running with him at least I'll have a general idea where to look if something happens.

Gee, thanks honey.

You switched though right so what you have now should last longer?

I don't know. I probably shouldn't. I just something worry that what I think I know isn't actually what I should know. (if that makes any sense.)

Oh sure, I know what you mean. I read something last night that said "for general fitness" you should be running 30 miles a week.

HAH! Who has that kind of time? I mean I suppose if you did no other workout and ran 4-5 times it would be totally doable but on a 3x a week schedule with cross training...yeah, that doesn't exactly fit into my life. I barely make what I do fit now. And that is just for "general fitness". So I guess I am not fit.

I drink water while I run... but after some sort of electrolyte drink. Have you tried Nuun? They have some pretty good flavors...but kinda do have a vitamin taste.

No, I haven't tried any of them. Allegedly until I go past an hour of running, I don't have to. :lmao: Another reason to keep it at 7-8 miles max right now. :rotfl2: I drink water after. I don't care for vitamin water either. I did drink lemonade a couple of times...does that count? I figured it was kind of close...though not something I'd want to run with. I did get a small water bottle to use on longer runs, may try it on Sunday. Depending on my long run route though, there are a few water fountains. However, the one time I did have a sip mid run, (only b/c I really had to use the restroom and well, the water fountain was right there and well..if I stop to go to the bathroom, the cool down sweats start so I was thristy lol!) I felt like it slowed me down. I'd rather just do water and try some of the "fuel" although I strongly suspect I won't like those at all but I know at some point I am supposed to have a sports drink in there for electrolytes. YUCK.

Ok for that, I'd use them on the daytime direct flight. If you have to pay $150 on a companion fare anyway, I'd use it on a more expensive one! Realistically if you do the overnight, you won't get to your hotel until around 10 and then have to be on the road by 7am. Doable but not restful and not really sure it leaves time for breakfast at a favorite restaurant. Heck, in Jan, it could be dark when you land and leave!

Given that Steve is planning to run the half... I KNOW he will not be up for a red eye. In fact, I wonder if this is contributing to him liking the Sanfran idea. We wouldn't lose sleep going down. 3am to make the 8am direct flight?

Oh no! Did you end up in cast? Evan had a boxer break...cast for 6 weeks!

It had a half cast that was wrapped then. I can't remember how long I had to wear it. 4 weeks seems likely..but it may have been 6.

I actually run with RX sunglasses on so I can read the phone. However, I'm more worried about it slipping out of my hand so rarely rarely take it out mid run.

I am so afraid to drop my phone running too! I have it in an armband....and can tip it. Seems to work well for me except for the fact my band needs to be replaced. I got a new one..but it chaffs. My old one had lost the velcro on one side so I am actually using a safety pin to secure it. It is so comfy and stretchy... I haven't been able to find one like it that I liked so I keep falling back to my safety pinned one.

Jeff's position is that he's been doing this for over 30 years without a phone or an ipod and doesn't want one now. And now that I'm running with him at least I'll have a general idea where to look if something happens.

Gee, thanks honey.

At least you kinda know where he is. I get his point though... if he has been doing this for so long... he has his "grove". I can see not wanting to mess with it.

You switched though right so what you have now should last longer?

::yes:: I did switch and it should last longer. Course I looked at the bottoms yesterday and there is a spot worn down to the midsole :headache: I probably will get another couple months with them. And..since I have had them for about 2 months... 4 months is pretty good. I think they are rated between 300 and 500 miles... so that does put me on the lower end. However, I had hoped to get 400 miles on them... and it will be close.

Oh sure, I know what you mean. I read something last night that said "for general fitness" you should be running 30 miles a week.

That is CRAZY! I mean... I know people do it. However...for "general fitness"?

I run 4 times a week and don't do any cross training (I know I should... sometimes when I am at work and moving heavy things though...I think ::yes:: this is my cross training ;))

All that being said... it is hard for me to get the time in. having been sick so much of July and August cut down my total miles for the months. I hope to hit 100 for this month, but that would be a stretch. 120 is out of my reach.

YUCK.

What about coconut water? I LOVE something I get in a can at Safeway called "real coconut" ( at least that is what I think it is) It is kinda near the soda... but where the bottled teas and such are. Usually top shelf. in a green can. It use to come in a bottle and there was the option of having pulp in it...don't get that kind. I won't say what the pulp reminds me of in consistency...but suffice it to say the flavor is fine, but the sudden "thick" parts of the drink are just enough to make you gag. :crazy2: I wonder if other people thought the same since I am seeing less and less of the "with pulp" on the shelves. Short of having protein in it.. it is the perfect electrolye drink. Nothing added. I try to only have that after a REALLY long run (like over 7 miles) because it does have natural sugars.

Ok for that, I'd use them on the daytime direct flight. If you have to pay $150 on a companion fare anyway, I'd use it on a more expensive one! I haven't seen what the direct flight cost is today. Yesterday was just over $400 for one way. :scared: I do think I am trashing the san fran idea. Everything you mentioned... we will have to be up early... not really time for that favorite breakfast. (Dotty's true blue... very good. You have to get there early and line up before they open and that line can take hours)

3am to make the 8am direct flight?

No, if it is an 8am flight then we can sleep a bit more. We would need to leave the house by 5am for that 8am flight. Get up an hour earlier... and it is 4am we need to be up by. (like for my flight next month)
