The crush of humanity... Our first Universal experience

Hi Eddie. Enjoying your report. I always get a little nervous when my name is mentioned in a report ... glad to hear that Sunray worked out for you at least (even if FL Tours dropped the ball on that one!).

Looking forward to reading whether or not you enjoyed the PBH (the GPS comment has me a bit worried!). :goodvibes

P.S. I am also looking forward to what you thought of the rickshaw drivers. ;)

You shouldn't worry because I never would mention a members name if their recommendation had turned out to be bad. You did a good thing in telling me to go with Sun Ray and I will always use them from now on, they were that good and a bargain, IMO. I hope they don't change owners because that's when the service seems to go down hill, at least in my experience.

As for the PBH, no worries there either. It might have been a little too big for me at times, but was a first class resort. You will probably laugh when you read my first experience in getting around. I'll try and finish my report later tonight. All in all, it was a positive experience and I enjoyed myself. I'm going to try and list some tips at the end of my report for fellow Disney fans like me, who are tempted to try Universal for the first time.

More to come......

Hoping to get some tips from you! We will be in Universal on Friday, staying at the Royal Pacific for the first time. :hippie:

Ed hurry hurry I need more! You are a great writer and I can't read this fast enough. Your DHW has been getting me very excited about planning a trip soon and this did not help. I can't wait to go!! Thanks for all of the tips and tricks you guys have been sharing we appreicate it!:yay:

All right, here we go with more of the report.

Wednesday July 25th, our last day at home and we still have ton of stuff to do, even though we have been preparing for our trip for quite sometime. My DW took the day off from work and thank God! I had set the suitcases in the corner of the living room and had started packing since Monday the 23rd. I didn't realise my two wonderful children decided to add what they thought we needed for the trip. When my wife decided to double check what was packed so far, she found the boys had added over 30 more shirts to the suitcase! We waited until Sunday the 22nd to tell them and I wished we had waited until the 25th, to tell the truth. DS 1 was beginning to make us crazy with his way of helping and deciding what he thought should be done. DS2 was right behind him and a willing partner in crime. It was a long 3 days leading up to our departure.:lmao:

Drove dog to the vet for boarding and took my sons along just so my wife could get things finished in peace. Still didn't matter though, because we were still making changes all the way up to an half hour before our limo arrived. I can't completely describe how crazy our day was because it's almost impossible to put into words. I went to work at 5pm and left what little there was to do, in my wife's hands. My good friend Rich who helped take care of my business while I was gone, was beyond helpful that day and because of his extra help, I was able to get home by 10 pm. Which, BTW, is 3hours earlier than I normally do. In retrospect, I would have been better off working my regular later hours, because when I got home my 2 sons were in the death grip of the dreaded "night before vacation syndrome". When I walked in the door, you would have thought my kids had drank a 12 pack of Mountain Dew or something. Now mind you our limo was scheduled to arrive by 4:30 am and it was almost 11 pm and no one in the house was ready for sleep. Yeah, this adventure was going to be fun, with just 2 hours of sleep under our belts.:scared1:

We were all finally were in bed by midnight, but you could hear my kids whispering to themselves and giggling. If I had a dollar for every time I went into their room to get them to settle down, I could book another trip at the Portofino.;) The funny thing was my wife and I are laying in bed and we're just as excited as the kids. My wife looked at the clock and said, it's 12:30 and if we go to sleep right now, will get 3 hours if we're lucky. I think we both tossed and turned until about 1:30 and I remember seeing the alarm clock tell the time. I woke up around 3 am before the alarm went off and started getting ready. My kids had heard me walk downstairs and were like, Dad, is it time? Only if they could get up like this when it's a school day.
Coffee was brewing, showers were going and before you knew it our limo was in the driveway at 4:30 am sharp. Man, those suitcases were heavy! It was so weird driving to the airport in the complete dark and getting to ORD so early.

Once at the airport we used skycap for checking our luggage. (Yeah we don't have to lug the heavy bags to the counter, since we already had our boarding passes. It was worth the 5 buck tip and I said a silent prayer that our luggage would find it's way back to us. Onto security, as some you might remember my new artificial hip might cause a problem, well it did. Thinking I was prepared I had a card and letter from the doctor stating the date and information about the surgery. Well let me just say that was not needed and was completely useless, I might add. They made me stand there with arms in the air like a scarecrow and with my wallet in my hand, while they proceeded to pat me down and run the wand all over me, again and again.. Of course, it still was going off when it went over my left hip though. The security guy would give me the look like maybe I was the first 6ft, 310 pound terrorist he had ever came across. I twice offered all the paper work and the card from my doctor, but decided that it would make better use as toilet paper, if our flight ever got lost and was low on supplies;)

The wife and kids were already through and just waiting until I got the all clear. Then we made it to our departing gate with a lot of time to wait. This was the part I was starting to dread. We all got a little breakfast at McDonald's, yet ate very little and waited until it was time to board the plane.
They did let us board early because of DS2 and that seemed to keep his autistic tendencies in neutral for the time being.. The flight was good to Atlanta, we were very lucky that our departing gate to MCO was just across from the gate we landed at. Too bad the returning flight back to Atlanta a week later wasn't as easy and I was fooled into thinking the Atlanta airport wasn't that bad. More on that later.

We boarded our flight from Atlanta to MCO, all went smooth, when we arrived at MCO and the excitement was building! We proceeded to the baggage claim area where we seen 2 drivers on opposite sides of a column at the end of the escalator, with our name on their boards. (Sun Ray & FL tours). We had cancelled our reservation with FL tours months ago. Talk about FL Tours dropping the ball. I told that driver that I canceled the reservation months ago. He didn't speak, but more of less grumbled something and got on his cell phone. I called FL Tours when I later checked into the Portofino but never heard back from them.

Hurray! We're finally in FL and the whole family was beyond excited. Roger was our driver from Sun Ray, what a really nice guy. The Suburban he had was clean and comfortable. While we're driving he gave us an update on what was new in Orlando. I can't fully describe how professional he was and as long as Bob and Roger own Sun Ray, they will always have my business. A+++ Fantastic service!

When we arrived on Universal property I was absorbed in taking it all in. The property just leading up to the Portofino was a lot bigger than I imagined and was very pretty and well landscaped, IMO. As we pulled up to the entrance of the Portofino, Roger gave us some parting words. "The Portofino is nice, but you might want to get a GPS unit and a guide map after you check in". I found out later how correct he was. This place was enormous, but more on that later!

Next up: Checking in, getting lost in the hallways of the PBH, and finally finding our way.

Great report so far
Thanks
I can relate as we went to Universal for the first time too in July (HRH)

Great trip report so far! How was your limo service from your home to O'Hare? I have been researching and have not yet decided on which we will use.

Arriving and checking in.

Roger from Sun Ray pulled up to the PBH around 3pm and told us to wait and he would open all the doors for us. As soon as I got out of the SUV I started to realise how fancy the PBH really is. While Roger was unloading the luggage a bellhop came right and welcomed us to the PBH and asked if were checking in or just coming in to dine. He was very professional and quickly grabbed our bags and gave me a ticket. He asked if this was our first visit and where we were from and was quite friendly. 2 days later on our check out day, this very same man noticed were getting quite warm trying to load up and depart and gave all 4 of us, some ice cold bottled water, free of charge! I noticed they had Loews hotels printed on the label. Very nice guy and a class thing to do, IMO. I paid Roger in full for our trip and thanked him and would see him in 2 days. He handed us a business card of his with our itinerary neatly written on the back of it. He also called his office and got us FL Tours phone number so we could make sure they weren't going to charge us as well. That is what I call great customer service from Sun Ray and I can't recommend them enough.:thumbsup2

I went into the lobby and was thinking I was really out of my element. This place was definitely a high end resort and the lobby and check in area showed that. We all were a little warm and pretty tired and my wife and kids were walking around and checking out the lobby. I waited in line for about 10 minutes and the female employee behind the desk was friendly enough. She ran through all my information and described the room in the West wing I was getting. No upgrades were available and my room wasn't ready even though it was close to 3:30. This is where I made my mistake in not asking what rooms were available. If one would have been ready, regardless of the location, it would have been in our best interests to get there and unpack. Because we were all starting to feel the effects of 2 hours of sleep. She finished our check in process and didn't ask for my LF card number or my AAA card either. I made sure to offer both so there wouldn't be any problems later and took in all the info. I payed the rest of the $239 AAA rate I owed for the room and declined charging privileges and refused the key to the mini bar.

Note to add:

Having cleaned hotel carpets and drapes and been around the management, I have two policies in place. I don't use the in room phone for anything else than to call the front desk and I don't do mini bars. Those two items are some of the biggest money makers for hotels and the mark up is steep. Plus my kids would have bankrupted us in all the crap they could eat and drinks they could open. I do wish I would have used my "complimentary 30 minute grocery stop" in the beginning of this trip, instead of the middle of it and that's a good tip to share for any newbies.

She then gave me a one time pass to The Mandara Spa so we could change our clothes and go swimming. After taking my cellphone number to call us when our room was ready she then gave us directions and sent us on our way. This is where our adventure begins and where our second mistake was made. In the rush to leave in the morning we threw our swim gear in a separate bag, but put it inside one of the suitcases, Um hello, anyone home? My wife then had to go in the backroom where bell services stored our luggage and find which bag had all of our stuff. It was part comical, part frustrating and the kids were not understanding why both of their parents were so dumb and unprepared.:lmao: In our 4 visits to Disney we have never done this or been this unprepared, but in fairness to Disney our rooms were always ready by 1pm or so and I guess we were just lucky.

On another side note: The front desk gave both of my boys each a fairly nice back pack with bottled water, snacks, and activity books, all free of charge! Take note of that Disney, please!

We finally got our act together and were on our way to the pool. We went out a set of doors in the lobby and down some stairs which led us outside. I could see the Piazza and was amazed at the size of the hotel and we haven't even really gotten started. I was kind of confused, but followed the signs like we were told to do and my wife and kids were completely clueless on where we were going. Since being the dad and architect of the this trip, I acted like I knew what I was doing and that's all that really matters in leadership, right?:rotfl2:

Note to all you Disney resort people: If you think your Disney deluxe resort is spread out, you haven't seen nothing like this and quit your complaining! LOL.

One thing that was kind of bothering me was the intense heat and I was drenched with sweat from walking from the lobby to the spa. I had never been in Florida during July before and it's quite the experience. I was starting to ask myself, why did I come to Orlando in July?

We finally came across our final set of stairs and it overlooked the beautiful Beach Pool. We all paused for a moment and just took everything in. We made our way to the Mandara Spa and went in. Once again I was impressed by the beauty of this place. The ladies at the counter saw my pass and directed us to the locker rooms. The men's locker room in the Mandara Spa is quite impressive and is fully equipped with everything you need. Towels, spa quality soaps and conditioners, Right Guard, etc, etc. Everything you need was on the counter and it felt great to take a quick shower. Sorry, I don't get into any pool without making sure I'm clean first. I threw my kids in there for good measure as well.

My kids were in full vacation mode and trying to get them to calm down while I got their swimsuits out and get them changed, was challenging to say the least. It was like trying to catch two greased pigs and put swim suits on them and my kids were every where it seemed. I couldn't figure out the locker situation and was confused if it was just for spa guests only. A couple of other guys in the locker room were clueless as well. Finally I flagged down a employee and he kindly showed me how to operate it. I lathered my kids down with sunscreen and went out the door. I found my wife confused in the hallway holding all her clothes and informed her how to use the lockers as well and she went back in. We finally made it to the pool and what a great pool it is. I would be willing to say it rivals or matches anything Disney has, with maybe the exception of Storm Along Bay. It felt great and for the first time in a while I was able to relax somewhat. The slide was great and so were the lifeguards who blow a whistle frequently to organise pool side activities for the kids. Very nice touch, IMO. Great pool and even greater staff.

Sorry for being so long and will continue on post below.

Part 2, of long winded post from above and my apologies again.

I got out after about of hour of swimming and checked the phone, no calls yet and it was about 4:45. I ordered a drink for my wife and I from the staff that goes around the tables. There seemed to be plenty of tables and wait staff to go around. I ordered some nachos and two hot dogs for the kids as well. I got to say the food was good, but it's pretty expensive. Those hot dogs were huge, but almost 10 bucks a piece and the drinks were pricey too, but you have to expect that. I went up to the bar a few minutes later and asked for the number to the front desk and the bartender didn't know. I stopped another employee and she was glad to help out and called the front desk. Still my room wasn't ready and it was 5pm and I needed to get settled soon. About 15 to 20 minutes later my room was done and I asked if we needed to come to the front desk and they said no and gave me my room number. I had enough of swimming and told my wife I was going to change and get our room and just stay there for a while and relax.

I showered again in the spa locker room and changed back into my travel clothes, yuck! Oh well, I would be in my room soon anyway, or so I thought. I bundled up me and my boys clothes and off I went. This is where my lack of sleep was starting to get to me. I proceeded to ask an employee where the West wing was and my luck, they were brand new and sent me off in the wrong direction. I finally figured out I was lost and had to collect myself before I got angry over something stupid and ruined the first part of the trip. I looked at a map of the hotel and within moments I had found my hallway and room. I have forgotten my room number but it was at the very end of the West wing on the first floor and three doors down from the exit that leads you to a side path to the boat dock. I turned on the air and opened up the curtains and saw my window looked out over the pool near the kids area and the cabanas. I rested for a minute and took it all in. I have to say the room was nice, but nothing said wow to me, until I opened the bathroom. It was big and I laughed to myself that it was 3/4 the size of a Disney Value resort room and this was a standard room! I went and retrieved my tired family and hiked the back to the room. We all walked into our room and we all looked like death warmed over. I called Bell services to get our luggage and also called the front desk about the stand up lamp in the corner that was broken.

I just wanted to get in some comfy clothes and relax. I heard a knock on the door and thought it was my luggage. Nope, it was maintenance to fix the lamp and I was amazed how quick it was, since I just had called down to report it. The door knocked a few seconds later, no luggage yet, and it was the maid offing us more towels. The door knocked again and I thought, my luggage was finally here. Nope, it was a older man dressed like a English Butler with our LF gift. (At this point we three employees in our room but no luggage. LOL!) The LF welcome gift was a fresh fruit assortment and two bottles of FIGI water. He arranged it nicely on the table by the door with napkins and silverware. What a nice touch and impressive, IMO. A few minutes later my luggage arrived and we unpacked and I thought this day was shot and I would visit the parks tomorrow. How could we get the energy to do the parks after a long day traveling and only on 2 hours sleep? You would think normal people would go to bed, right? Well by now, I guess you figured out me and my family don't fit into the definition of normal.

Up next, my final installment. Our first time in the parks, my thoughts on Universal as a Disney fan and my review of the PBH as well.

This is the one I have used for three trips and never had a problem or complaint. Excellent newer vehicles and very clean. A little on the expensive side compared to others, but well worth it, IMO. Good luck on who ever you choose.:thumbsup2

Yes I am, but I can't give his link on these boards due to the site filter on the DIS. It's not allowed for various reasons and considered an infraction. You just need to Google his name for info. Thank you for the compliment.

Incredible trip report! I love all the details! We are headed back to PB in three weeks and reading this makes me even more excited!
