The Conservative - Liberal Debate Thread

I think whenever a religious person prays to his/her God for guidance on an issue, then come to a conclusion they believe is correct, they beleive it's an answer from God and they may relate that as "God has spoken" to them.

I don't think people mean it in the most literal sense of an actual conversation.

I think God is telling me to turn off my computer.
 
I never heard him say that. I read that Palestinian leaders claim he said it to them in private, but they certainly aren't a trustworthy source in my opinion. There are quotes from Bob Woodward's book that I suppose could be attempted to be spun either way, just as some might try to do with Obama.

The White House comment on the quote was that it was a "figure of speech" - so isn't that confirmation that he actually said it? They seemed to chalk it up to the 10,000th "what the President meant to say" moment.
 
You've made judgments about where others get their understanding of things. From whence comes your authority? And please don't say God. ;)

no how about the fact Obama has a "has a "personal relationship with Jesus Christ" or just the dogma of his own Church in relationship to their beliefs about prayer not be "passive".

Somehow I think Yeartolate would rather be labeled a left leaning (on social issues) Libertarian. ;) Seemed to me you were stating that Obama's faith should be an issue. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Quotes sometimes seem to meld into the next posters replies here a lot. One "laughie" would have been sufficient, but I can't really tell you how to post, can I. ;)


And about the subject at hand; Faith is a great thing, imho. I have it myself. Having a President of faith is not a problem at all for me, unless said President puts his own personal faith above the wants and needs of his constituents (all of us). Keep the Bible in the bedside table and don't take it into the Oval Office with you. Obama will be quite capable of doing this. Much better than the current occupant is. Again, jmho.

I don't recall the WH confirming that specific quote, "God told me to invade Iraq", as a figure of speech. In fact I remember Scott McClellan denying that Bush said God speaks to him. Even the BBC who tried to blow this all up with hearsay from Palestinian ministers, could not find independent corroboration. If you have a link stating otherwise, I'd be interested in reading it.
 
Well, you listed abortion rights--that's one. Gay marriage is another. The environment, civil rights, pulling out of Iraq, etc.

But I think without government programs, some people's lives would seriously get worse. If we didn't have as many taxes, I don't think people would give that money to charity instead.

1) Gay Marriage - Special interest which pits one group against another

2) Environment - you mean like stopping all development. yea that's a GREAT idea. How about it we were able to tap the oil reserves in ANWR. Do you think that could help with some of our issues with foreign oil?

3) Pulling out of Iraq is not really a liberal/conservative issue. There are many conservatives that don't want to be in Iraq.

4) Civil rights - you mean like quotas, affirmative action which again pits one group (those that get "extra" rights versus the white male)

5) I don't have the link in front of me but states with lower tax burdens do have higher rates of charitable giving.

But you see, not all believe as you suggest. So the President is out of step with some, in step with others. You seem to be upset that he doesn't agree with you.

Good luck to them! What with outsourcing and unemployment, rising fuel prices, astronomical healthcare costs, and greedy lenders, not many in America who can afford to have a large family anymore.
 
I have been active in politics for many years now and I'm wondering why I haven't heard about "God speaking to Pres. Bush" before so I checked the info online, here's what I found.

It's a shame then that not many middle class families qualify for free cheese. Affordable health care, an end to the war, more jobs that stay in America, fair world trade and affordable housing will be sufficient perks for them. Too bad Bush/McCain aren't able to supply it.
 
But GOd does not tell him to go to war. He is talking about faith guiding him. No words to the ear accepting instruction. Very important distinction.

Glad you both were able to have gainful employment. Used to be a family could live on one 40 hour a week salary in this country. Shame it's no longer the case. My neighbor's son told me even the local McDonalds here has a waiting list. My cousin (in a large city) just got the axe recently and will loose his cobra coverage for his family soon. He's gone on countless fruitless interviews. They keep telling him they have more applicants than positions. With a coming recession to make things worse, seems to me the "stay the course" mentality we've had for 7 years is about due for a great big shakeup.
 
Here's the President clearly stating with no ambuguity whatsoever that "God is on our side" at the end of his speech to the American people right after 9/11.
