~The BOT Battalion~ BOTS On The Run

Jodi
Hardly injury free. I developed "runners knee" during training for my second WDW Full when I decided to run a Cross Country marathon instead of a schedule 18 miler. Learned lesson number one: Don't run 26.2 miles through woods grass and sand if you only train on pavement. My knee went out at 18 miles and I had to walk the rest of the way to finish. I kept training on the injured knee with runs until the pain started which was usually less than 8 miles, since that was when the knee seemed to go out. At the 2007 WDW Full I got in 16 miles running before the knee gave up and had to walk the rest of the way.

Early training for 2007 MCM was interrupted following double hernia surgery and recovery.

That was followed by a pain in my left hip while training for 2008 Goofy. The pain would start after I got up from sitting for long periods of time. I would usually go away after a mile or so. I kept training on it and it eventually went away.

While for 2008 Philly, I had abdominal pains that felt like a hernia but weren't. The Doc said it was an adhesion and to rest. So, I kept running since it would always seem to go away within 20 minutes of running.

Now I have a pain in my right heel, especially when I wake up in the morning. It is also noticeable after sitting for extended periods of time. It usually goes away very quickly once I'm up and about. It has never bothered me while running, so I keep on running.

I occasionally have miscellaneous pains that crop up while running but I "Chi" them away.

Ooooookay, I stand corrected. :rotfl: Wow, you're falling apart like me. ;) Dude, that heel pain sounds like what I've got....be careful, that's the Plantar Peanut thing - don't mess up your foot!:scared1: You've got way too many races to run!

Back home to reality. Heavy sigh...:sad1:

Mike Did you win the powerball jackpot and not tell us? Seems like you have been on vacation for months now. I'm jealous
Matt - No Powerball. Just better than expected profit margins shipping homeless pets overseas to the kung pao factory.;)

MikeHave you run @ ALL???. You're starting to sound like me...what a slug!
Jodi - If by "run" you mean rush to the concierge lounge before they stop serving beer and/or cookies, hell yes! I've "run" a bunch!

As far as the new car, we heard that it might take as long as January to arrive, we are waiting for better news and hope it comes a lot sooner than that. It is being made in Germany, then it comes over by ship.
Cam and Howard - Hopefully you won't regret ordering a car from a bunch of Germans at the start of Oktoberfest!

Chester - That's a pretty impressive list of ailments. Should we start calling you Steve Austin?

Colleen -How was the massage?

Jen - 90, 100. What's the difference?;) Good luck and I hope it's a good race for you and Butch.

Lou - You and Jodi should publish a no plan running plan book.

Well, as stated above we are home, safe and sound and I actually got out for a 6 mile run this evening. I didn't bother unpacking the Garmin so I didn't worry about my pace. My hips and back are more than a little sore from the 15 hour car ride home last night and my center of gravity is a bit shifted :confused3 but it went alright. More tomorrow.

Chester::scared1: so many injuries, I'm glad things are a bit better now, good job on avoiding the rain

Mike: Welcome home, it's really tough coming back from vacation. I'm trying to pretend we get to stay in CA for several more weeks instead of only a few days.

Today was again really nice but hot-- officially 95 so things are cooling off a bit. We had a great time swimming and going down the water slide a billion times.

Injuries, aches and pains are all part of the game. Hopefully I've learned enough over the last 4 years that I can eliminate the injuries and just deal with the aches and pains that come with the aging process.

So far, I've never had shin splints - but I do get "sympathetic" shin splint phantom pains every time I have a run after reading about someone elses problems.

About the Plantar Peanut thing - so far it hasn't hampered my running. It is just really annoying when getting up or after inactivity. If I take a minute and stretch by pointing my toes up before getting up, then I can move about fairly pain free.

My latest issue of concern is heart rate during warm-up miles. during this time my pace is typically between 10:30 and 12:00 mpm. For about a month now my heart rate during the first 10 - 12 minutes hits some pretty high spikes - like over 200 bpm. My perceived effort is normal and I don't feel like my heart is racing that fast. After the first mile or so my heart rate settles down to where it should be. I've got an appointment with my Doc on the 14th and will see what she says about this.

Mike
Welcome back! It's been quite a while since I've done a 15 hour car ride, but I don't miss them one bit, considering I can get pretty sore form a 4 hour ride now.

Jen
Sounds like DL is hotter this year than last. Any issues from the smoke? Tell butch to remember me when he passes the water station just beyond Angels Stadium. If I recall, this is where he blew past me last year:worship:

I've got 6 miles scheduled for Saturday and 11 on Sunday.

Happy Labor Day Botness to all.

Chester
Neander-runner of the first degree

Lou - You and Jodi should publish a no plan running plan book.

Mike - I like the idea. It's kind of like the Seinfeld "book about nothing" approach. In my book you just run a lot whenever you can and make sure to carb up before and after runs with Philly soft pretzels and water ice. Avoid vegetables at all cost and don't be afraid to knock down a shot of tequila the night before a real long run.

Chester - Sounds like you are held together by duct tape. You're the bionic man of running.

Colleen - Is this a post run massage or just pure self indulgence? I'm not even sure if I know what I mean.

Jodi - I have no idea what I'll run this weekend. Read my book.

Hey everybody that I missed!!

MAN...what a freakin week!! What happened to this being an easy week with everyone on vacation? I worked my butt off all week and only got in 3 miles on Monday. Heading out now to run as long as I can.

I'll share a nasty story with you guys (for no reason). My company was hired to survey a sewer/stormwater outfall on the Delaware River. I go out with my survey crew today and what a day. First, the area around the outfall is a make shift hobo camp filled with trash and dozens of stray cats, cat food and kitty litter. One of my guys goes out in a kayak because we need to take depth measurements of the water in front of the outfall. Well, at one point he decides to get out of the boat to get a measurement where the water looked shallow. He ends up falling into the water because it was about 8 feet deep. It looks like the scene from Star Wars where Luke gets pulled under water in the trash compactor. I mean this guy swallows a mouth full of river punch and comes out covered with muck and film. I thought of a line from the movie Apocalypse Now..."never get out of the boat." That's my day. Hope you guys had as much fun as I did.

Lou

Colleen - Is this a post run massage or just pure self indulgence? I'm not even sure if I know what I mean.

Lou

Indulgence?:rotfl:Absolutely not, in fact, it hurt so much, I kept asking myself why I was paying this guy to do this to me. Today I feel like I have been hit by a truck, VERY sore. But, I needed it. It "hurt so good" I am going back on Tuesday for more.:lmao:I did manage to get 3.5 miles in walking this morning and a few weights today. Icing tonight and we will see what tomorrow brings.

Hi Mikey! WELCOME BACK!! I hear there is a 12 step program to acclimate your family back to the real world. BTW, we are having Chinese tonight for dinner, I hope this helps pay for your vacation.

Chester, nice having you back posting!

Good luck to Jen and everyone doing DL this weekend.

HI Howard, Cam, CindyLouWho, Dave, Sara, etc. Have a great Labor Day Weekend.

Wow, what a difference a week and some better weather make. Last week I was supposed to do 17 miles with 13 miles at marathon goal pace. I scrapped that idea within the first mile and barely struggled through my run. I felt like I was going to die and I spent the rest of the day on the couch drinking beer.

This morning with temps in the 60s and low humidity I nailed a 15.25 mile run in 2:07:42. My average pace was 8:23 and I felt strong the entire time (well except for the fact that my shin hurt a bit, but it always hurts lately). Good luck with the runs this weekend bots!

Umm, I ran 4 miles this a.m. & had a bit of heel pain afterwards, but I'm sick of trying to baby this thing. Eff it! :rotfl: That week off from running killed me, played it safe this morning & still felt like poop!

Chester - Glad you're having that heart thing checked out! Let us know how you make out.

OK, I need to post before the thread runs away without me. I'm doing the ice, ibuprofen, and rest thing with my shins. I ran 3x this week and biked on the off days. Yesterday we drove down to Keuka Lake and I did a 60 min run. I probably did 6 slow and easy miles. My legs felt OK, not great, a little sore, but I'm tired of talking about it. Afterwards, I swam with the girls, and hung out with DW people watching at the park.

Chester- I hope all is OK with your heart. That's a little scary. Is Miranda having fun here in Rochester? I saw some DCA people practicing at a park near my house. What color is Miranda's corps?

Chester: Definitely check with you doctor about this, but it could also just be that your heart rate monitor is a bit flaky. I've had problems with my heart rate monitor doing this in the first few miles also. I think that once I got sweaty enough (after the first few miles) the monitor made better contact with my chest and the flaky high heart rate stuff stopped. Another thing you might do is check your pulse when the heart rate monitor is reading 200+ bpm to compare.

I agree with Matt, you should get that checked out!

DH and I went out for a leisurely 8 mile walk this morning, it took us 2:01 but it is in the books. Knee still doesn't feel ready to run, so at this point, I will get the steps in and try and make it to start line for NYC.:thumbsup2 A little disappointed I can't run much, but I guess I just need to play the hand I was dealt and make the best of it.

Mike, we need to hear details of Universal, are you a convert or a Disney for fan for life?

Chester - Be careful, be smart.

Colleen - Good for you gettin' those 8 in. We'll get to the NYC start if it kills us!:rotfl: Which it might. Disney blows Universal awy, IMHO. However, they DO need to get some of those cool rides over to Disney. Spider Man, the ride, is hands down, the best ride I've ever been on!

Dave - Good job getting those 6 done, go easy. Sounds like you had fun @ the lake. Long weekend, right?

Mindy - How'd the training go this weekend??

Ran 3 today. Heel hurts, but I'm sick of not running. Time to just suck it up & go. Go get some needles stuck in my heel.

OK, serious question. I need new headphones for my Ipod, but apparently, either the rest of the free world has gaping earholes, or mine are tiny beyond belief. Anyone know of small ear buds? And no, the "small" size that come in regular packs don't work.

Jodi~ Check with Cam.. she has a similar issue and she's found something that works. I even sprung for the Bose earphones and those were too big..even the smallest size.

I am finally caught up reading everyone's posts.

Chester~ Please take care of yourself. I am sure Tracy has told you to get moving to the Doc, just in case. Please keep all of us Bots posted.

Colleen~ Keep getting the steps in young lady. I think I could use one of those "hurts so good" moments right now. :rolleyes1

Lou~ That story about your worker dude sounds gross. I've been along the river on the Spirit of Philadelphia and the areas along the banks are heinous. Glad he didn't drown and that you didn't have to dive in after him. I though about you while I was out on my run earlier today. Wish I had been in Philly running with you.

I ran this morning... a bonafide LR, can you believe it?

Miles: 15.0
Time: 2:54:19
Pace: 11:37
Splits: 9:30, 16:15 (w), 9:34, 10:48, 9:47, 10:54, 11:24, 11:11, 13:01, 9:26, 11:22, 10:37, 12:10, 13:16, and 14:59 (w).

I made sure to look at my time at 13.1 miles - 2:26:51. Not great, but for all the non-training, non-running I've been doing, I'll take it. I literally walked the second and last miles. I had plenty of walking sprinkled in the run too, but not too much. I gu'ed, power bar'ed and took G2 along for the run.

I feel pretty good, just general soreness. The knee is fine (for now) as is the left foot. The knee didn't give me any problems out on the run, for which I am very happy.

The last time I ran a double digit distance was the Walt Disney World Marathon on January 11. The closest since then was on June 24 when I ran 7.12 miles.

I think Jodi and Lou might be able to use me writing that book about not training. :thumbsup2

Hi to everyone else! Dave, Matt, Cindy, Jen, Butch, Kathy, Mike, Sara, CindyLou, etc!

Have a great (short) week!

:grouphug:

Howard

Howard - :worship::hug:Good for you!!!!:thumbsup2 That's a terrific time, great run. I'm really happy that you were able to get those miles in. You've been dealing with a lot of crap injury-wise & you deserve all the good stuff coming your way!

Cam - Talk to me about the ear-hole issues!:confused3 What the eff? What are we, like, "little ear" people or something?

Hey to everyone else! Took the day off from running, but did have to work a few hours :headache:. Did some CT on the trampoline :jumping3:

Cam - Talk to me about the ear-hole issues!:confused3 What the eff? What are we, like, "little ear" people or something?

You know what they say, "Little Ears, Big Hearts":thumbsup2

OK, obviously I just made that up, but if the shoe fits...

ALERT ALERT

I bought new shoes today!!:dance3:

I can't wait to try them out tomorrow. Hope everyone had a good long weekend. We love this long weekend, we always try and keep it low key because the kids have already been in school for 2 weeks and they are usually pretty tired. But after a nice restful weekend they are SO ready to go back to school. The next few months are going to fly by. Keep healthy in your training friends.

Mike, where are you? Trying to find the concierge lounge in your house?

I am now the proud owner of a TEENAGE daughter. DD's birthday was yesterday. Wish me luck!

Jodi - I was all set to say that your freakishly small ear holes must be the reason your are such a hot head. You know, less venting and all. :furious:But then Howard blew that theory to bits by saying Cam had the same issue.:confused3

Howard - Congrats for going double digits! It's been a tough road for you this year.

Mike, we need to hear details of Universal, are you a convert or a Disney for fan for life?
Colleen - We did enjoy Universal but I wouldn't say we're converts. They're just 2 different experiences. Universal definitely has better thrill rides and you can plan on getting TOTALLY soaked on the water rides but the shows are a little cheesey and it's just not Disney.

Jodi - Spiderman was a big hit with most of us too but I think I liked The Simpsons ride a little better. You gotta love a ride where Homer yells "My bosoms are slapping me in the face!".

ETA: Still looking for the concierge lounge!

Well....I can't argue with that :sad2:.

Congrats on the DD being a teen! :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: I mean, things will be fine, really.:rolleyes1popcorn::. Don't worry, Kathy'll take care of it!:thumbsup2

Colleen - New shoes, eh? Good luck with them. Glad you had a nice relaxing weekend.

Quickie tonight...

Ugggg, too much homework! What's the deal with teachers nowadays??

I got 4 miles in today with my new shoes, jury's still out on them.:confused3
