Thanksgiving Food

My favorite is my mom’s stuffing (she makes it) and my corn pudding.
They are my favorite since we only have both dishes once a year. Everything else I make throughout the year, so they are not something that’s a favorite for Thanksgiving.

Several years ago we started cooking a mini thanksgiving dinner once a week leading up to thanksgiving.

So far this season we have done it twice.

We cook a simple green bean casserole, stovetop stuffing, jellied cranberry sauce, and either cook a turkey breast or buy some slices of ham from the Honey Baked Ham store.

All in it only takes 10-15 minutes of prep and 90 minutes or so for the turkey breast.

It makes our dinner and 4 lunches.

We always have to travel for thanksgiving and never get leftovers so this is our way to get some more thanksgiving food during the season.

Typically I get up late (I had enough 5 am "start cooking to serve it all at lunchtime" Thanksgiving mornings in my childhood to last me until death; so we don't eat the turkey until the sun is well over the yardarm here.)

I can appreciate that so much!

Now, Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday and I enjoy every aspect of doing all the cooking. I just enjoy the day start to finish. Husband and kids usually hunting in the AM, so I enjoy a leisurely morning w/ the Parade on while I re-read my lists and timetables
Nibbles go out around 1 or 1:30, dinner is on the table about 4 PM. We have 11 confirmed attendees for dinner this year, and a possible additional 9 people joining us. I LOVE a full, boisterous house on Thanksgiving, and I'm quite looking forward to the day this year.

I'm 100% team stuff the turkey!

What’s your opinion about gravy? I like the yellowish turkey gravy. My father said the sight of it made him sick and insisted on brown gravy. My kids also prefer brown.

I’ll use brown gravy If that’s all that is offered at someone’s house, but when we host we provide both kinds.

Sweet potato souffle
Cracker Barrel knock off hash browns so I can tamper down the salt
Baked chunked carrots with rosemary
Green beans I saute' in butter with lightly browned almonds
Pecan pie
Pumpkin pie

Trying to decide if I want to add sausage stuffing stuffed mushroom caps this year

Sorry, not a gravy person at all.

Oh, do it!!!

I am not a fan of Turkey at all - but Ill eat it. Its pretty good fried but a little too much work for me to bother.
I much prefer the stuffing - needs to have spicy sausage in it.
Also cranberry sauce - and it needs to come from a can no doubt - get rid of that fancy homemade stuff- dont need it.

The best thanksgiving meal I had was one year when we went to a restaurant and everyone got the standard turkey plate - I got the lobster - which is the most authentic thanksgiving meal item - it was at the first thanksgiving in 1621.
So I say go with lobster every time.

We also Pear with Brie and pistachios - that is really good

Hmmm, so do they get crispy everywhere? This could be the start of a beautiful new addition. Box or home made?
Homemade. Everything is done on cooktop to start. (I use a large loaf of plain white bread that I ripped into pieces the day before). Then formed into balls and baked in oven. Not exactly crispy all over but in some places. I guess it could get crispier if cooked longer. Let me know if you want the recipe.

We make gravy from scratch and neither our turkey gravy or chicken gravy is typically yellow. Turkey gravy requires turkey stock (sometimes available to purchase) but we make our stock from turkey wings and thighs that we usually start buying, preparing and freezing in September so we have plenty on hand for Thanksgiving & Christmas. I have never liked gravy from a jar or the mix packets so we figured out how to make it years ago.

I love all the food at Thanksgiving...it's also the only time of year I get cranberry sauce...and if it isn't canned shaped-it ain't right 🤣

I think of turkey gravy as being a lighter brown as opposed to beef gravy which is a darker brown. I like both. I’ve never thought of turkey gravy as yellowish.

Corn pudding is such a lovely dish and I miss having it on T Day. Thanks for keeping up the tradition.

Cream gravy with giblets which is a light beige color once the cream goes in. I could drink that stuff, LOL
