I went up to Minneapolis to see my friends one year in July. I asked them what the metal sticks (about 3 ft long) were on the fire hydrants. They said that's so they can find them in the Winter.
Also the first place I saw support braces on the legs of the big highway signs. Apparently the snow plows were throwing snow at them and knocking them down.
Here's a little one, but the big ones have it too. I've since seen this out West too
