Marathon Weekend 2026

This morning I snagged a Poly Studio for MW! Today is my 7 months and I figured I was getting a SSR one bedroom, which was totally fine. But I saw it there, watched the world clock count down to 5AM AZ time and crossed my fingers. I can’t believe I got it! It’s a preferred view so I put in a waitlist for standard to save some points, but I’m thrilled!
Just got the email that my waitlist came through! It was Jan 9-13 at Poly for a resort view studio!

Good afternoon RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). Happy Father's Day to everyone! In honor of the day, do you have a Disney story involving your father?

SAFD: Disney trips were not a thing for me growing up. Our family vacations consisted of trips to the NC mountains or coast. As an adult, I was privileged to introduce my parents to Walt Disney Worldas part of vacations with their grandchildren. Unfortunately, in his second, and final, trip to Disney my father was fighting advanced breast cancer. The experimental meds he was on were giving him sores in his mouth, so it was difficult to eat. One of the first nights we were there, we went to MVMCP and were having dinner. He couldn't find anything at Pinocchio Village Haus, so he and my mother wandered over to the ice cream shop at the Hundred Acres Wood. They chatted with the CMs about what was going on and when they brought out his milkshake, he was told that "it was on Tigger". It was a small thing, but it's always stuck with me how much that little bit of pixie dust meant to him and our family. It doesn't seem like there's nearly as much of that happening these days.

SAFD: I have three things that stand out about my dad at WDW with us...

  • My family went to Disney World in 1988 (I was 7). We have a number of home movies from this trip. This was during the era of large cameras, which means my dad -- in July -- was lugging around a giant camera on his shoulder for the entire trip. Impressive!

  • My dad joined me and my wife (as a spectator) at WDW for my first half marathon in 2013. I will never forget the bus pulling up to Epcot and him seeing how many people and buses were there. I think it finally hit him why we were getting up at 2 a.m.

  • My mom and dad joined my wife and I on a WDW trip in 2014. During a meet and greet with Chip and Dale my dad told them he had some of their cousins under his front porch. This from a man who says they are just 20-year-olds wearing costumes.

SAFD: Happy Father’s Day all! My father never took us to WDW. Vacations were always to visit family. He did introduce me to running back during the runners boom of the late 70s and early 80s. The introduction has stuck with me enough to keep me running. I suppose in some strange way he’s playing a part in every WDW race.

I think there was some talk of the shirts running a little small. Should we size up? I typically wear an XL.

I would stick with the same size. At the Springtime Surprise I found out that the men’s large was similar to the old men’s large. I tried the new XL and was too big. You can always try them on and trade at the expo

SAFD: My dad is not a WDW kind of person. I’m not sure he would deem much of anything worth waiting more than 10 minutes for, leave alone amusement park rides, so a day at the parks is not his cup of tea and would not have been at the top of his list for a vacation. But, he loves my sister, brother, and I very much and, growing up in the early 90s, going to Disney World was the platonic ideal of a vacation for a middle-class midwestern family so he and my mom made it happen.

We went twice when we were all between the ages of 9 and 14. Those were amazing vacations and are some of the most vivid memories I have from my childhood. Maybe it’s why I continue to enjoy going to Disney so much.

He has softened somewhat now that he’s a grandpa going with his grandkids to the park. He has even run a 5k and 10k during Marathon Weekend. I don’t think the dollar signs are flashing in his mind anymore the way they were when we were kids. I think that also makes it much easier for him to enjoy a day where he only goes on the attractions he wants and can relax a lot more throughout the day.

SAFD: My dad had an annual work conference at the Dolphin since the early 90s. In those days, we would take a boat to the very quiet International Gateway entrance (you couldn't walk), or a small mini-bus to the other parks for rope drop, and actually be the only people there. Dad would get so much delight out of that.

Dad and I did our first marathon together using the Galloway method in NY in 2003. His shirt said DAD, and he was surrounding by KID 1, KID 2, and KID 3. I'll never forget the city of New York cheering for Dad all the way through Central Park. He's not running marathons these days but still cheering us on.

SAFD: I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house where we made several trips to Disneyland in my youth. My mom is a Disney fan, so my dad was along for the ride. As he got into retirement and he had more time to "research", he really got into how everything worked at the theme parks. So for a few years, his birthday and Father's Day gifts were books that pulled back the curtain on a lot of things Disney. As I got home from college and made trips to Disneyland a frequent thing, they also would go to Disneyland more often. When I got married and had kids, my parents would often join us on our trips. So I have numerous great memories of the parks with my dad. My most recent favorite memories are that my wife and I were able to treat my parents to their first ever trip to Disney World for MW2024. Seeing how they took in the parks and how they compared everything to Disneyland was pretty cool. Having them at the marathon finish line was awesome. I remember hearing them yelling as I came down the straight away to the finish line.

So, I popped onto the WDW Weekend website last night, and all the events had reverted to "Registration Opening Soon" from "Sold Out". I decided recently that I regret not signing up for the 5k (space theme), so I refreshed llke crazy for an hour. Starting to realize that change in status doesn't mean anything because this morning all the races still say "Registration Opening Soon"! Wine & Dine does also so it must be due to some other unrelated activity over there.
Edited to update: Finally back to Sold Out
