Tell Me About The Pick A Pearl In Japan

Have you done this? It seems awesome! Do you have to reserve a time or can you just go? How much does it cost to have it placed on a necklace?

Aww I did this a few years ago! It was so much fun! I think it was around $18 for the pearl (probably more now). No reservation was required. You just walk up and pay. I think I had to wait a bit because it was so crowded though. Once you select an oyster, the CMs do this super cute little drum ceremony and size the pearl. I had it set in a necklace, but i cannot for the life of me remember what it cost. I think the jewelry prices are pretty inflated though. Sidenote - I really really wanted the Cinderella carriage necklace, but it only fits pearls on the smaller side and mine ended up being too big.

Our DD did it about 5 years ago and her oyster had two pearls. She is a twin and thought it was so cool to get two. (Her brother is her twin and he wasn't interested in the other pearl.) She ended up getting earrings. We didn't pay more than $40 at the time for the earrings. The prices were reasonable then - we haven't done it since.

DW finally did this on our last visit in 2015 after years of watching others.

And don't forget - it's "san", "ni", "ichi".

OMG a Cinderella's carriage necklace!!! I am so excited to do this during our next visit!

This is one of my DD13's must do's! She absolutely loves it. I think last year she bought herself 4 pearls, I got 2 (1 had twins). It is fun and the CM's that do it are some of our favorites! We head there as soon as WS opens and the only thing we have to wait for is the CM to get the register going. If we're walking in the WS we'll usually swing by Japan and watch other people pick pearls, too. It's almost as much fun as doing it ourselves!

We saw someone do this when we were at Epcot last week. The Japanese CM who did the little "ceremony" was very animated and fun. I think the price was around $16.95.

My daughter was chanting "Sun! Knee! Itchy!" for the rest of the night.

My good friend checked into it last week and was quoted somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 - $60 bucks for the pearl and necklace. She opted not to indulge.

It's $20ish for the pearl, and the settings are inflated at $35+ as far as I saw. My daughter actually didn't love any of the setting we saw (also quite crowded and hard to get a good look around at the time) so she just brought the pearl home. Santa brought her the carriage "cage" necklace off Etsy and I think it was less than $10. Great idea to look for "pick a pearl cage" online before your trip. Even if you can't decide and choose 2, you still come out ahead! The finish on hers is still shiny and in tact. The process is really cute and fun - great keepsake.

I'm very happy with it. I don't know what size pearl it will fit but I'm going to surprise my DD with it the morning of our Epcot day. It's the Cinderella carriage.

I think most of the online ones state they hold up to 9-10 mm, which would be a pretty good-sized pearl. If you're so lucky that your pearl is bigger, at least you're only out $11!

My daughter and I did it in 2010. We had the pearl cages from eBay. They tarnished and the coating came off very quickly. At that time Disney didn't offer the carriages.
When we went back in 2012, they did. I purchased is two carriages at that time. They are sterling silver and well worth the money. I haven't taken mine off since then.

I did it in 2014 and it was awesome! I picked 2 oysters. The first one had a 7.5mm pearl, and the second had twins!!! I bought carriage cages on Etsy for $8.50 before the trip and brought them with me. I kept the 7.5mm for myself, and gave each of the twins to my 2 nieces, so it worked out perfect! I would do it again. There is a location in Japan, Disney Springs and Beach Club.. but Japan is the best for the experience!

We had heard about this for years, but finally decided to do it last year. I bought my DD a Cinderella's carriage cage necklace on Etsy for like $8 and took it with us. She really enjoyed he experience of picking her oyster and seeing how big it was. She wore the necklace the rest of the trip, it was so cute.

It's a really great experience. As others have said, I'd purchase a setting online to avoid paying a high price when you can get something similar and/or better elsewhere. The CMs that work there are incredibly enthusiastic and really make the experience.

it was fun! my boyfriend picked out the pearl and he had it set on a ring for me i wear it every day!

side note: there is also a pick a pearl place at Disney Springs in the marketplace. If you don't like the big show and attention of the one in Japan, the one in DS is a great alternative! in my opinion, the pearls were bigger there too, and they had a WAY better selection of settings that were better overall quality

Does anyone know if they will just drill a hole in the pearl for you? My DD has an add a pearl bracelet and I think it'd be fun to do this as a little tradition to add to her bracelet.

We do it several times each trip! I always end up getting a silver pearl! Once it was silver twins!

It's addictive!
