Tell Me About The Pick A Pearl In Japan

yes go and do it - great fun. A very enthusiastic CM gets you to countdown with them "son" "ni" "ichi" buliding up the suspense as you pick your pearl and have it opened and sized. Have fun with the show that you become a part of. I purchased a cage with Minnie ears off etsy pre trip for short money. One of the best souvenirs you can get at EPCOT. The Japan pavilion and the wonderful CMs are my favorite part of touring EPCOT (they just need to stock more Totoro merchandise ;-)

this is the cage I got from etsy

My daughter and I have done this twice. The first time I picked a blue pearl and had it set into a ring purchased at the store. The stone fell out but I glued it back into the prong. The second time was this year over spring break. We went around noon and the store was not busy at all. The woman was very excited that it was our second time. The production before they open the pearl is fun and it gets people very excited (many impulse purchase result I'm sure). I picked a black/silver pearl. This year I purchased a carriage cage pendent and my daughter purchased the minnie ears(very similar to the one above) on Etsy and brought it with us. They cleaned and sized the pearl and I put it the cage right at the counter. It was $17 for each oyster picked. I would recommend doing this to everyone that asked.

Edit: It is said to pick the ugliest, furriest one to get the rare pearls. Don't know if it's true but we have always gotten the colored pearls by using this tidbit.:hippie:

We love it and have done it 3 years in a row. For the last 2 years my DD has picked twins and DS (who picks for me) has had the largest pearl of the day :) We have so much fun and have nice jewelry out of it and it's fun knowing you have a little bit of Disney on at the time. There are so many different settings and price ranges if you choose to have it done there. Always so much fun! I think this year we are going to do it as gifts for the grandmothers for Christmas

I did it in august and had so much fun decided to do it for grandmothers' Christmas presents in Nov. DS picked the oysters and then we had a cute story to tell the grandmothers. I got cages (sterling) from pearlsisland.com. mine is a carriage but grandmothers got nondisney cages.

Lots of fun.

We did this with my daugther when she was about 4-5 years old. She absolutely loved it. We may do it next week during our trip since its been a while since we last did it.

Have you done this? It seems awesome! Do you have to reserve a time or can you just go? How much does it cost to have it placed on a necklace?
All of them have pearls.
All of them are already dead.
I suggest ordering ahead of time. Like anything you want to go with the pearls. It's too expensive and overpriced. Amazon has cheap prices for the same jewelry. Necklace cages earring and so forth.

I still have my pearl from our trip 3 years ago, I didn't really like any of the settings so it's still in it's baggie. Looks like I need to hit eBay for a carriage necklace. :)

It was a lot of fun, will totally do it if we get there again.

I've gone twice, 3 oysters each trip, and have 6 7-7.5 mm pearls now. :) I keep hoping for something different, but for now I'm going to save them to be strung together into a necklace. It's about $18 each, and a really cool souvenir.

So worth it! My 6 year old daughter picked out three pearls... one for her and two of them for her grandmothers (we purchased the Cinderella cage on amazon as well) and we gave both grandma's their pear and cage for Christmas. They cried and wear them everyday! In fact, they get stopped when out and about regarding their pearl necklaces! My daughter also picked out a "twin" by chance so I ended up with one!

We went last year and my wife and DD each got one. If my wife wants to go this year, and get earrings, do you have to keep picking (and paying) until you get two pearls that are the same size?

I'm really excited about this for our upcoming trip! I want to order Cinderella's carriage ahead of time. Should I get the silver plate ($8) or the sterling ($23)? I know the sterling will be better quality, but won't it tarnish?
