Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Hi, gang...

Just wanted to pop in with a couple of words of advice I have taken to heart:

For general life, I was told when I was 16 years old, while buying candy at the local drugstore and feeling like a little kid, "Never grow up" by the old lady working the register. That has stuck with me for 30 years now...and it pays off when people think I'm 10 years younger than I am (that, and the exercise thing). :goodvibes

For endurance events, one of the best pieces of advice my coach has given me is: "When you feel bad, Eat." So true...sometimes being down on calorie intake in a long effort (over 2 hours) is enough to make you cranky, not perform well, etc. A gel is a good idea at that time.

Happy training!!

The most memorable advice I've ever received was from my best friend to wise up and stop acting like a jerk with reference to my former girlfriend. This was somewhere around mid-1987, less than 3 years later the former girlfriend was my DW and the rest of the story is still going strong :lovestruc !

Richard, it's guys like you that ruin it for the rest us! :lmao:

Only kidding; sounds like karma to me.

Jack

Okay, I'm sure I've received good advice on running, health, and etc., of which has made me a better person and, dare I say, athlete? One example is similar to Sandi's comment about hydration. Once I started thinking about drinking water as hydration lots of good things happened. I stopped having a lot of headaches (turns out that dehydration triggers mild headaches). I lost weight easier. My skin and hair are in better condition. Sure, I need to use the facilities more often, but the trade-off is worth it.

But in the strange life advice, I offer you this conflicting dating advice my parents gave me when I was a teen:

  • "Always be able to pay your own way." (My father, worried about my dating safety.)
  • "You're never too good to say no to a free meal." (My mother, trying to encourage me to date nice boys.)

You can see how these two bits of advice might work nicely as an overall approach to life--being independent and trying new experiences. On the other hand, they do seem a bit contradictory as a guide to personal relationships. :lmao:

It's all about options eh?

Hey guys! I am here! YAAAY! Late but here. So here is my best advice:

"Don't get discouraged when the results don't happen as fast as you would like!"

We all want the results but we all want them right now. Reep what you sow and the results will come. (I guess I could keep adding more pieces of advice, couldn't I?)

Sorry for being so late but hope everyone is having an awesome week so far.

Bryan:yay::cheer2:

Waiting for my time at the Genius bar...wish me and my MacBook luck.... Of course, now I really want one of these new babies. :cloud9:

Anyway, Jack, you are such a card! Always make me laugh. You're doing Disney in January, right?

Richard: Your BF really stepped up to the plate. I love that the advice was simple AND yet had such tremendous impact. I'm sure there's much more to the story.

Betsy: I love that advice--never heard it, but am working on living it.

Maria: That's the kind of teacher who earns your respect over and over as you age.

Bryan: Uplifting as usual. You should be a life coach.

JenB: Actually, this one's the reason I'm online. Have you seen the Muppet Whatnot Workshop? Great reason to visit the FAO Schwartz in NYC! :woohoo:

Okay, have to logout for now. I hope everyone's having a great day!

It's been a really interesting week and it's only Tuesday...

Sorry I missed yesterday but I don't have great advice other than the cliche of "listen to your body" which usually is right-- if something hurts, back off for a bit, eat only if you are really hungry, when you are tired, take a rest break, etc... seems like good advice to me

The other interesting advice I got during med school and residency was "eat when you can, sleep when you can" It was fairly good survival advice at the time but creates bad habits and goes against the advice above.

My other favored tidbit was spoken prior to the start of last year's Minnie 15K-- if you think are are going to too fast, you are; if you think you are going the right pace, you are going too fast... I laughed at the time, but it is really true.

As for my weekend, the Broad Street Run was fun--wet, but fun. I had set the goal of less than 2 hours for myself for an overall pace of 12 min miles, slow and steady. The race is a ten mile run straight down Broad Street through Philia-- almost no turns in the whole thing other then to jog around City Hall. The course if also pretty flat with an overall downhill elevation and only a few really gentle uphill protions. You park at the end of the race and take the subway to the race start then basically run back to your car (kind of gives "race you to the car" a new meaning :rotfl:). We parked and it was steadily raining. By the time we got to the start the rain had stopped and it was just very overcast but not too cold. Light rain started when the race began and continued for about an hour or so then got steadily heavier. Considering the weather, I thought the crowd support was really good. There were more than enough water stations and people were generally really friendly. This was my first run in the rain as I usually train indoors on the TM and it went pretty well.

I managed to make it in 1:58 which was pretty good. The only flaw was that my garmin got all waterlogged at mile 8 and stopped being useful. My phone got pretty wet too and did work to find my husband at the end of the race then promptly died and has not worked since. DH did well too with a time of 1:31 (he wanted less than 1:30 but his watch died too and he lost track a bit). The real fun started after the race because I had to go to a meeting in Princeton, NJ and be there by 1:00-- the place was about 1-1.5 hours away and I really wanted to shower-- although I was getting heavily rain on during the mile walk back to the car so that sort of counted as a shower (and probably finished off my phone). We got stuck in the parking lot for an hour trying to leave which gave me no time to circle past home and shower.:scared1: I wound up changing into dry clothes at the local mall bathroom and putting on lots of deodorant-- my friend did actually save me a seat and claimed I smelled ok for the meeting. After the meeting I went home, showered and went to a friends' first communion party then got home at around 11pm and passed out.

Thanks for hanging in for the long story. Yesterday was a recovery day and today I'm heading back to the TM for some exercise.

Hi Cousins -

Jeanne - I hope you are healing up well. :scared: When I saw you Saturday afternoon after the race I didn't know you were in pain. That really sounds like it was awful.

Richard - congrats on finishing your first tri. It's great that you exceeded your goals! :woohoo:

Debra - how was the Star Trek movie?

Jackie - sorry that Sienna was sick. It's no fun cleaning up after a sick dog. :sad2: I hope she's feeling better. She was probably just sad that you were gone for the day.

JenB, Butch, Corinna, DOOD -:banana::banana: congrats on your races too!!! It seems like there have been a lot of cousins out there racing over the last few weeks.

As for me ... I've kind of taken it easy over the last week. I was a little sore coming home from the CMM. I went for a couple short walks last week and have been to the gym this week. I'll slowly get back into a routine - I hope! I don't have any races in the near future so I need to come up with a plan to keep me motivated. The next race I'm registered for is the Goofy. I might sign up for a half marathon in the fall.

I'll try to get back here soon to post a little about my CMM experience.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! :sunny:

JenB -- You should get some type of award for taking your soggy self to that meeting when I'm sure you just wanted a hot shower and your bed! It does sound like you had a really good time at the race!

Debra -- Say it isn't so! We need your daily missives to keep us chatty and smiling! :thumbsup2

Bryan -- That was just the advice I needed to see. You must be psychic! :wave2:

Richard -- Yep, sounds like there's a story there. You should share if you feel inclined. :surfweb:

Jackie -- I'm so sorry about the sick puppy! I hope everything is back to normal :thumbsup2

Debra -- Looks like we're going to make seeing Star Trek a family affair this weekend. Dennis didn't get a sitter (one of his household chores, which doesn't happen often ;))for Friday night, despite the fact it is our 16th wedding anniversary. So, we're all going. I checked out a review and it said, "sci-fi violence and mild sexual content". I'm hoping that's ok for an 11 yr. old. If not, Daddy can take him out in the hall, Momma is watching the movie! :lmao:

Ok, so here's my story -- how I made lemonade out of big yellow lemons.

Since school never, and I mean never starts here before Labor Day, I went ahead and booked our summer vacation at Universal and bought the airline tickets for the end of Aug/Beg of Sept. You can see where this is going. School starts on Sept. 1 next year, four days into our proposed trip. We can't have ds miss the first 3 days of 6th grade...so back to the drawing table. Where an intriguing possibility occurs to me -- school ends June 17th, camp doesn't start until June 29th. I have to do something with ds those days, or we both have to take time off. Hmmm. We'd have to move from the Hard Rock Hotel to the Portofino Bay, but we'd still be able to stay onsite and with the great deal, it's not much more for more space and 3 pools. There are indeed flights available! So then I just had to break it to Dennis that we'd have to pay to change the airfare (the actual fares only went up $10 each), and a bit more for a much nice hotel -- actually it would be more to stay at the Hard Rock, which didn't have any more rooms at the great deal, so I'm saving money ;) . Once he realized what a great deal we were getting (i.e. I was not giving up this vacation after last year's staycation unless someone was unemployed), it's left to me to make all the arrangements.

So that's been keeping me busy. I changed the hotel and flights, and now I'm looking at rental cars and I need to get park tickets. In my odd family, we are going to both Universal parks, Busch Gardens (Dennis's sister lives in Tampa, so we'll be there a few days), and Aquatica. Both my fellas have expressed a keen aversion to another visit to SeaWorld :confused3 so I guess we'll get Flexitickets, but who knows?

Anyway, I'm thrilled to be going, just trying to come up with all the things I thought I had all summer to figure out. It's a good kind of busy! :yay:

Hola, Feliz Cinco de Mayo

Debra- YES! I'm in for the 01-10-10. I signed up the first day so Now I have to go!:woohoo:

Jack

I'm a late arriving Duck and have enjoyed the advice.

I have two that never fail me:

Live as if your life depends on it.
and
Look back, but don't stare.

Have a great rest of the week everyone.
Ronda

Oh, no...I'm sorry I killed the thread. :sad1:

Ok, no more vacation tales, I promise.

Do we need to send out a search party for the Cousins? :confused3

All by myself, I don't wanna be, all by myself....pathetic isn't it? Makes you want to post, I hope!

It's almost Friday -- I know you have weekend plans to share! ;)

Maria :upsidedow

Hi Cousins!

Just a quick drive-by for now:car:, but I'll be back soon to catch up with everyone. We've been back from Disney for a week, but things have just been so busy!

Debra, I promise I'll have my April #'s to you very soon.

Maria - I even sang along! :)

Debra - Star Trek tonight?

JenB - Great job on the Broad Street run. Has the cell phone revived? Our Galloway leader (who just happens to work for Verizon) gave us little ziploc bags for our phones. Don't know if it will actually keep out rain in a steady downpour, but it does help!

Okay, okay, even though I have no activity to report - don't even remember the last time I ran, but I have committed to run tomorrow with my group as long as the storms hold off...

Sienna was sick again yesterday - repeat of Friday, crate had to be hosed out, dog bathed, then dropped off at vet. Vet thinks it's just a bug, maybe picked up something when she drank water out of the creek last week. Gave her lots of meds, sent her home on a bland diet for the rest of the week. Keeping our fingers crossed that this will work.

DD's soccer team has 2 games this weekend, then one more next weekend and her season is over - FOREVER! Then all the graduation activities start - end of year band banquet, senior dinner at church... it's going to be absolutely crazy for the next month. Galloway season begins 5/23 when Jeff comes to town - then we're off and running - pun intended! :lmao:

Must get back to work - thought I'd at least try to help revive the thread!

Jackie

Hi Team,

Just a quick note to say I made a last-minute decision to run a YMCA 5K Trail run this weekend, plus I'll be trying to see Star Trek if I can get DW to go with. I'll buy the popcorn for anyone wanting to fly down and come with me.:happytv:

Jackie: a ziploc would have been great if I had thought of it, but alas... the phone had not been functional, although I briefly thought it might turn on when the Verizon logo showed up. DH's phone is a bit the worse for wear too, so we just got new ones-- it was more than 2 years so the phones were pretty cheap to replace. Fortunatly, my Garmin does seem to have fully recovered.

I figured everyone was quiet on the boards due to massive hangovers from the Corona and lime :rotfl:

Have fun Star Trekking tonight for all who chose to go-- let us know how the movie is. popcorn::

We are off to FL this evening with a visit to my in-laws followed by some Disneying. We are pretty psyched for this trip and will be staying in a new studio at Kidani Villlage at the Animal Kingdom Lodge--- can't wait. I'll try to check in through the week.

Debra: I promise I'll eventually get my miles in.

I'm back, and asking for thoughts and prayers. DD has been on the same soccer team since she was 9, and most of the girls have been together for many years. One of her teammates lost her mom to cancer over Christmas, and we already knew then that her dad had cancer as well. Her dad was the nicest guy I've ever met, and generally took care of the team. We got word tonight that he passed away today, so his daughter (DD's teammate) now faces her high school graduation without either parent. She does have an older brother, and aunts, uncles, and grandparents, but I can't imagine what these kids are feeling now.

Please keep this family in your prayers this weekend, and through the weeks ahead!

Jackie

Jackie,

I feel for you, your DD and your DD's friend in this time. I will surely include all of you in my prayers during this time.:grouphug:

To my fellow Star Trek fans, I saw the movie and rate it :thumbsup2.
There were a few things I was less happy about, but I can live with them in a "re-envisioned" movie.
