What?? Did I scare everyone away with my crabiness? :confused3

I promise I'll play nice. ::yes::

I'm still here, most people are enjoying the champagne over by the hot tub!
So what do you think of my kids possibly becoming TV 'stars'?

Hey, TB, what are you paying for private school. If I tell him that and multiply it times two kids, maybe he'll realize that $5,500 a year in property taxes is NOT the end of the world.
... The county is going to raise sales tax from 7 percent to 8.25 percent.

We pay $2,600 a year for Daniel, Holly is in public school.

Your county can raise sales tax? Our state sales tax is 6%. Our house is assessed for a little more than yours and our yearly prop. tax is $1300 or so.

QOTD - How much do these things cost where you live?

gallon of milk

gallon of gas

movie ticket (after 6:00)

Happy Meal at McDonalds

2 liter of Coke

sales tax

Not sure exactly the price of the items. However our sales tax is 17.5%!!!! I know my Harry Potter ticket (for a saturday at 7pm in the superior seating) was £6.40. Not sure what it is in $$.

Hmmmmmmmmm, dinner will be something quick for Tye then we will rush out for groceries. {He must be fed before 6 or it isn't pretty. Ok, he's only 15mo's. Give him a break. If you have kids, do you rememeber those days?} THEN....try to get back by 7:30 to get him in bed by 7:45. The only reason I take him with is to spend some of the waking day with him. Great fun gadzooks...............grocery shopping.

When I get back, maybe I will make some spaghetti for the rest of us.....with a nice salad. OR I could make some fajitas in honor of Cinco De Mayo. Mmmmmmmmm, chicken fajitas minus the green pepper sounds yummy. What should go with that? Mad4's ranch beans. Yes, that's it.

gallon of milk - $2.69 but I usually get it for $1.69 with shoppers club-type discounts

gallon of gas I just paid $1.84 a gallon this morning

movie ticket (after 6:00) Yikes! Haven't been to a movie in the evening in ages. Probably $8.00

Happy Meal at McDonalds Another good question. Probably around $2.29?

2 liter of Coke Not a big soda purchaser. I could tell ya what a six pack of Amstel Light costs! ;0)

sales tax
7.25 percent right now soon to be 8.25 percent

I just spoke with my neighbor. They raised her assessed value up another $12,000. Misery loves company.

I think I'll move to Kentucky. Do they dislike Yankee's there? :teeth:

But don't forget you (or your employer) doesn't have to pay $10,000 a year for insurance for a family. It all has to come from somewhere, I guess.

How can you not know the price of any of these items? Lucky girl....your DH must do the shopping and fill the tank?::yes::

True, thats why I am glad we have a national health service. However funding for this does not come from the 17.5% sales tax it comes from the national insurance that comes out of our wages each month. Every month I have £790 deducted from my wage (DH has slightly more) in taxes. Plus to drive a car we have to pay seperate road tax each year (although this is getting better as they have introduced a system where as the smaller cars have to pay less tax). Our national health service is not what it used to be so we choose to have private health and dental insurance. Oh I forgot each month we have to pay council tax as well which pays for the up keep of roads, rubbish collected, water and sewage services etc.

So the tax $$ you have to pay, what does that cover and what do you have to pay privately?

I don't know the petrol price as I only fill up every 5 weeks as my drive to work is only 5 minutes. Plus I don't really look at the price on the pump as I need the fuel so have to pay what ever. As for grocery shopping. We do all our food shopping via the internet which the supermarket then delivers. I have a standard order each month which I only change slightly so I don't really pay attention to the price on the screen!! I just click away and add the items into my virtual basket!

We have road/wheel taxes where I am too. We also have water, sewage, and rubbish bills.

I used to fill up every 5 weeks....I miss that. I would watch to get lower prices and the timing fluctuated sometimes to every 4 weeks. You can save.

Internet food shopping and delivery? We can shop online and then pick it up, but there are fees for that. Who'd have thunk it?

Like I said, lucky girl. ::yes::

I love my internet food delivery. The food comes in a van. Frozen stuff comes in the freezer part of the van so is still frozen, same with the stuff for the fridge. We have to get lots of cat food each month so now our driver leaves us the tray from the van they put the shopping bags in and takes back the empty one from last month. They deliver from 6am - midnight and it only costs a few £. The time it saves us though is worth it.

gallon of milk - last week it was $2.69, when I went to the store yesterday it was - gasp - $3.75, can anyone tell me what's up with dat?

gallon of gas - $1.80

movie ticket (after 6:00) - $6.50

Happy Meal at McDonalds - $2.29, cheeseburger, $2.69 chicken nuggets

2 liter of Coke - $1.29 and up

sales tax - 6%

In Kentucky we have property tax, yearly auto. tax, and of course all the various types of income taxes.

Barb, do you live in city limits? We don't pay city property tax, we are about 1/2 mile past city limits.

Oh and we pay $500 a month for the worst health insurance money can buy.

Sounds like the cost of living here is about the same as Barb, a little higher than Lewski.

I am very sad..:(

I got the quote for the Summer 2005 cruise and it is BIG Very Big $$$$$.. so no summer cruise for us...

I am going to the kitchen and make bread and chocolate chip oreo cheesecake,,

Yup, I confirmed it.

Here's a hypothetical:

If you make: $100,000
Living in: Georgetown, KY

Then
You would
need to make: $99,600
Living in: Syracuse, NY

You would
need to make: $95,274
Living in: South Bend, Indiana

and my personal fav.
Kissimmee, FL $101,130

 I'm shattered so time for
Have a great evening everyone. :thewave:

TB, do you have a link to that calculator?

I live just east of the city of Syracuse--in the Town of Manlius. So I pay Town taxes. We have our own police force, highway department, etc. I don't live in a "village" (thankfully 'cause that would make taxes even higher).

Skyrocketing state and local employee pension costs have been a major factor in the fiscal crisis affecting every level of government in New York State. Taxpayer financed public pension contributions have soared by more than $2.3 billion dollars over the past two years—and are projected to rise even more in 2004. In New York City alone, the rise in pension costs will consume every dollar raised by Mayor Bloomberg’s record property tax increase.

The defined benefit (DB) pension plans used by state and local governments guarantee employees a fixed percentage of retirement income based on their peak salaries and career longevity. This requires those governments to invest money each year to cover future pension payments. But their contributions vary depending on complex actuarial assumptions and market fluctuations. As a result, the DB system is crisis prone because earnings during bull markets cover employer contributions, while losses during bear markets force governments to drastically increase contributions. Since bear markets usually coincide with recessions, DB pension plans force governments to spend more when they are least able to afford it.

---------
And herein lies the problem--at least a big part of it. Well, unless of course you work for the State. ;)
