That is not entirely accurate. Synthetic oils, such as mobil 1, will provide more protection to the engine, because of the oil's ability to "stay on the parts" which then reduces the friction in the engine Thus, it reduces some heat in the engine, and reduces damage caused by the friction that takes place when the parts move without adequate protection. Synthetic oil will always be better for an engine, as opposed to regular oils. However, if you switch to a full synthetic from a regular oil, the synthetic will break down deposits in your engine. Your engine has an increase in buildup over time. This buildup assits in sealing places where small pin holes may develop over time, i.e. older engine. If you switch over to a synthetic from regular at high miles, you may experience small leaks because the synthetic oil will break down the deposits. Some times this is good, sometimes it is bad. You may want the increased protection that comes with the oil, and less work for the engine, and live with or replace the gasket etc. that may develop a leak.
If changing from a regular oil to a synthetic, try going to a synthetic blend first, and then move on to the fully synthetic, so as to ease the engine into the change. Of course, at low miles, a switch can be made without problem.
The synthetics will last longer, and, arguably, require less changes. When I played with cars, before the truck I have now, my HP with the synthetics was higher than regulars, but, nothing scientific about it, as the tests took place at different times in the engine, etc.
