switching room type mid-vacation

Our AKL trip is quickly approaching. When we originally decided to upgrade from POR to AKL, all that was available was a standard room. We booked it, just happy to get a room, but I had hoped that once the cut off date came and went we would have a chance to upgrade to savannah, pool room or even a bunk room. Doesn't seem like that's in the cards this time. Has anyone asked at check in to be switched to a different type of room at some point during your stay if a better room comes available? No matter what, I know we'll love AKL.

IMO, unless the switch is to the Savannah view room, I don't think I would do it. I like to get in the room and get settled, and not have to worry until time to go home. I think packing, switching rooms, and unpacking again would take a lot of time out of my vacation. Enjoy AKL!

Make sure you ask if an upgrade is available when checking in... if no, I would add that you really would like a savannah (or whichever) room and if someone doesn't show for their reservation, could you be informed. I would also call the desk after about 10pm to see if someone didn't show up (I wouldn't depend on the front desk to inform you). It couldn't hurt... and you might get the room you want.

Also.. call everyday before you leave! Remember, you have up to 3 days before your reservation to cancel without penalties, and some people wait until then before cancelling.

One year I was surprising my dd on her bday with a trip to the world. Because it was so last minute when I decided I could afford it, ALL I could get was SSR. I wanted AKL sooo bad. I called every day... and about a week before our departure day I got a poolview room! I did ask about upgrading to a savannah upon checkin, but they were pretty full. I was just thrilled to be able to get a room there at all!!

So don't give up!

I kept thinking that ppl had to cxl 45 days out, just because the balance was due then. I've been checking online availablility but will start calling, just in case someone cxls. I'll make sure ask if there were any last minute cancellations again at check in. (and if not, I'm sure we'll love AKL anyway.
