Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

My 3 kids go to 3 different school so that triples the risk for us

I do have soap and water but wanted to have the sanitizer available as well.
OHHH they were out of lysol but while I was there they got a new box in and were restocking. I grabbed 3 cans of it... but again I have 3 kids

I have 3 kids too and they all have mini bottles of purell in their school boxes but that was before this - always
I guess my point is everyone is running out there buying this stuff in excess (not 1 or 2 bottles, but 10!), kinda like when the weather reports a snow storm might be coming and everyone runs out to buy milk, bread and toilet paper (or maybe that is just a crazy Maryland thing ) . I hope if anything it makes people start to wash and/or sanitize their hands b/c way too many people don't on a regular basis

Sounded to me like the head of tourism came in and gave the governor a good talking to. Several times he stressed that all people can come down to conventions in Dallas, or San Antonio, or Houston, or East Middle Of Nowhere........

I also learned that he has a degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M.

Seriously it was more of the same. If anything, it seems like Texas this morning was more on the panic side of the spectrum and now the pendulum has swung... for whatever reason.

I just had a phone conversation with a client who wanted to meet with me, I said no. He said he would come to my office I said no your daughter is home with a flu-like illness. He laughed me off the phone.

Am I the crazy one here? I don't know. The vast consensus on these boards is that I am. I have the city closing schools, cancelling weddings, cancelling all public gatherings over 20 people yet when I refuse to see a client whose dd is sick with a flu, I am the one overreacting?!?!?

I don't know what to think! I just want this all to be OVER!

I think we all want it to be over. Personally i think you are sane for not seeing someone whose child is sick right now. I would not listen to the media, JMO. I am listening to the CDC personally. I think if people follow recommendations and use common sense it will be okay. Too many people are either one extreme or the other though. As far as our trip in a couple weeks - we are going as of right now.

I know what you mean. In this area, swine flu still hasn't been "confirmed" (though I'm starting to wonder why Central FL is apparently the only area in the country where it's taken 72 hours and counting to confirm or deny). But I know what I'm seeing and hearing from those I have no choice but to trust (local health care professionals), and I'm definitely getting the same reaction on these boards that you are. Maybe we're both crazy I'm ready for all this to be over with too. It's a horrible time we're all going through, and there are so many unknowns, even for those who are supposed to be protecting us. Keep the faith, it will get better eventually.

Oops! Sorry, I missed that you were the one who posed the question No pygmy pigs either. I've been to a lot of petting zoos around Texas, both with my children and grandchildren, and I honestly don't remember a single one with pigs (although there may have been a pot-belly at one or two).

So, do the math here: you don't know you are sick while you're contagious and the CDC says go out about your business and travel as usual unless you show symptoms. See a problem here?

Guys: they CAN'T tell you not to fly or go to WDW. They WON'T do that! Do you know what that would do to an already destabilized economy????

Use your brain. Don't believe everything you hear. Common sense says going about your business as usual with confirmed cases in your town is the WRONG thing to do!

My town may go down in history as overreacting, and yeah I was VERY mad when they cancelled school til May 12th. But now that everyone is falling ill, I'm ok with keeping myself safe and making my OWN decisions taking all the facts into consideration. The government lying to it's people? Huh-that's a novel idea. They CAN'T create a nationwide panic! That would be irresponsible!

I completely agree!!! If you live somewhere where there are confirmed cases of Swine Flu then you have no idea if you have been exposed! And to help avoid spreading the flu, should consider postponing your travel plans! The problem is, most people won't do this if they are healthy. I live in NJ where I have heard of no confirmed cases so I am confident with my families plans to head to Disney tomorrow but we are taking extra precautions. Healthy vibes to all!

It's not a personal attack on you at all. It's following the premise that YOU presented out to its logical extreme. I'm tired of the "more people die from drunk drivers" argument. I would hope that everyone on these boards uses the good sense not to BE the drunk driver. Yet very few seem to realize that they could, potentially, be the infection carrier that causes someone immunocompromised to ultimately lose their life. It's the socially responsible thing to do, to try to minimize risk to not only yourself, but the greater community. Or maybe that's too hippie an ideal for modern society.

At any rate, I know that you and everyone else are trying to do the best you can as you see fit. And that's all anyone can do. You have a Disney Day as well.

Disney Cruise Line joined several other cruise lines in altering its Mexican itinerary due to Swine Flu fears. Its May 2 Western Caribbean cruise on the Disney Magic (pictured at right), originally slated to visit Cozumel on May 6, will go to Nassau in the Bahamas as an alternate. Click here for the USA Today article. Disney only visits Mexico once every other week, as the Magic alternates between Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, so plans are still up in the air for its next Western sailing, which doesn't leave until May 16, with its Cozumel stop slated for May 20.

Other cruise lines joining the mass exodus from Mexican ports include Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess, Norwegian, and Celebrity. Because a cruise ship is basically a closed environment in which thousands of people share close quarters while eating, watching shows, and enjoying other recreation, it can be a danger zone if even one passenger brings aboard a contagious virus. I recall that you write on phobias. It sounds as if you have one yourself. I'm not saying don't be concerned, but to ask healthy people to stay isolated because they "may" be infected is unrealistic. The world can't stop turning. If you are ill, stay at home. If you're not, be cautious, but go on with life.

Of course the world can't stop turning. I don't see anything wrong with people going about their basic daily routines within their own communities. I do, however, think that continually mixing entirely different demographic groups in a confined place that has nearly 100% weekly turnover, with virtually all of those people having traveled on enclosed aircraft with entirely different demographics, virtually ensures that some of those people are going to be infected with this virus. And once they're infected, they then become carriers. They go home and pass it to their previously uninfected communities (after they get on a plane and infect a few more people who will then return to their own communities).

There's only one way to break a cycle, and that's to simply break it. How does this not make sense???

We are supposed to leave for the World tomorrow and will be there on Saturday. My husband and I are both taking our limited vacations next week....that is a "done deal". I have three children that have been pulling links off of a paper chain for months. I have been waking them up singing zip-a-dee-do-dah and then while they are eating breakfast we broadcast a Disney song of the day through the house. We have been planning and packing and I have done everything I can to get them stoked and excited about this trip...spreading the pixie dust. Now, the week before, things have changed. I have been telling myself that we can clorox wipe, germ-x, keep our hands away from our faces, and it will all be ok...especially since there were no cases in Florida, let alone Disney. I get the feeling that by the time we arrive, that will change.

What is everyone else doing? I know there was thread after thread about so many DIS'ers going the first week of May. Everyone still going?
Just out of curiosity, if I call tomorrow...the day before we are scheduled to check-in (and I have already checked in online) can we still get a refund with the exception of a fee that I would expect?

I am sooooo upset. I feel like I could throw-up. To top it off, I called my family doctor and she said to use my own judgment, but that she personally would not go.
While I would know that I would be canceling out of love and concern...an 8 year old that has been pumped up for months is not going to understand.

I need help here.

Be prepared for 80% of the people to tell you how much of an idiot your doctor is. My uncle, who runs a hospital network in the northeast, recommended the same. If you read through several pages you will see that about 85% are still going. 10% are up in the air and 5% cancelling.

In your particular situation, NO.. His child is home with a "flu-like" illness.. As I said previously, even the CDC will tell you to avoid people who have known illnesses.. Granted - "he" doesn't have it - but "he" is in close contact with her daily.. I'm not one to panic at all - nor do I think you did - and I would have refused to see him as well..

However, on the other hand, I don't feel the need to isolate myself from the entire population right now.. Again - my circumstances are different than yours - we don't have all of the closings and cancellations that you do - so that's a different scenario..

For those who don't have circumstances similar to yours, I don't personally think it's necessary to go into isolation at this point in time..

Hope things take a turn for the better in your area soon!
