Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

I have read parts of this thread. Some posts say "I'm a nurse and it will be fine" and others say "I'm a nurse, and it won't be fine". Some people know this doctor, or that one; know secret news or results that no one else does...etc. Honestly, I don't know what to believe and I'm not sure anyone does. My family just two weeks ago bought annual passes for Disney and my kids are begging me to go. My husband doesn't see a problem with going and I'm just paranoid about everything health related. It really comes down to every family doing what they think is best. I wish everyone good health in their travels.

I dont wan't to get involved in the flaming so please chill out a little, but I do want to respectfully throw my 2 cents into the discussion.

Today I went out and bought 80 face masks 4 boxes of latex gloves a case of hand sanitizer and a case of clorox dissinfectant wipes. I purchased all of this for my 25 employees (just in case). That being said I highly doubt that any of the stuff I purchased will be needed. Right now I'm taking a wait and see BUT be prepared approach. I'm not changing my everyday life but I'm ready too if need be.

We have no cases of Swine flu reported in my town (and none according to the only pharmacist in town). I'm only 28 but I remember a lot of things in my life that this is very very reminiscent of, namely:
West Nile, SARS, AIDS (when expected to wipe out the human race in the 80s), Anthrax, Smallpox, and the mellinium computer bug. So lets give it time before we start running around like chicken little with her head cut off.

I like your thinking! :thumbsup2

Are we still talking about this?Look everybody is diffrent some people are worried others not so.Do what you think is best!!lets go back to talking about DOLE WHIP!!!!!!This is my 1st time ever to disney is it at every park? How good is it really come on...be honest

The name of the thread is "Swine Flu." There are plenty of threads to discuss Dole Whips.

Local Orlando reporter just reported from Epcot that there is NO hand sanitizer available for sale in the park at this time --- they ran out. Also, the first aid stations have NO hand sanitizer. However, he said you can ask for a "squirt" of hand sanitizer from any cast member who has it for their use. He said that Disney is not telling people this when you enter the park so I thought I would pass it along to anyone who is interested. Best idea would be to bring your own.

I think this is how we all feel. Have a great, safe, healthy trip! :goodvibes

Im from Scotland so only going by what is being reported in the media here, so my apologies. Although in that case she was at a petting zoo which im assuming will have pigs, in a city which is close to mexico.

Possibly, but I don't think I've personally been to a petting zoo in Texas that has piglets.

Was there talk of suspending flights when bird flu was the big threat? I cannot remember...I guess because i wasn't flying at that time.

I just got back from Walmart ~ I had to do some shopping. While there I wanted to pick up a couple extra bottles of hand sanitizer and our walmart was sold out! I even asked. There was a huge empty spot on the shelf.
While checking out I saw 2 bottles of germX next to the gum.
I grabbed them and came home.

Now my 15 year old walks in from school and I told him I bought all the hand sanitizer at walmart. His eyes got huge!!!! He said isn't that going a little overboard mom? :lmao:

The school nurse did visit classrooms today and gave handouts about the flu. Basically telling the kids to wash their hands, no kissing and stuff like that. YEAHHHH teenagers are really going to listen to the NO KISSING rule :rotfl2:

I'am sorry for interupting your conversation please continue. No need to start a new thread got my answer.Ill step back to the corner again and just watch popcorn::

I think I owe you an apology. I am really sorry. My tone of voice does not always come across so well in just typing. Feel free to :surfweb: and popcorn::. I think I was doing too many things at once...work and DIS...so I will stop now and wait till I get home to "talk" again! :)

So I will just :surfweb: and popcorn::.

Not that I recall. They let us fly to Turkey even when they had actual bird flu cases in the city where we were going. I was on the WHO website almost daily that year and they did case reports each day. The bird flu very rarely went from a person to another person. It was bird to person. The WHO rating was always 3 or less.

I'm off to supper and a soccer game and volleyball practice. Anyone think these events will be cancelled by week's end? ;)

:

Is that something you find amusing? Just wondering because of the wink. All high school sports in Texas (and I believe at least one more state) have been canceled indefinitely. Guess it isn't where you live, so it's okay :sad2:

my walmart had empty shelves in the soap aisle where the hand sanitizer usually is also and they were also sold out by the check out lanes (I heard another customer ask). I was buying soap and noticed the empty shelves. I guess people are stockpiling it LOL Good thing I have soap and water;)

My 3 kids go to 3 different school so that triples the risk for us :lmao:

I do have soap and water but wanted to have the sanitizer available as well.
OHHH they were out of lysol but while I was there they got a new box in and were restocking. I grabbed 3 cans of it... but again I have 3 kids :lmao:

Ok...for those of you guys that just listened to the Texas briefing...thoughts?

No hand sanitizer at my Target either. I did find three travel sized bottles of the Target brand, which is the same strength as Purell. There was also a 2-pack of 3-oz. Purell on the rack by the register, so I snatched that up, too.

I wanted to clarify this, because I feel it is misleading. WHO's "phase rating" has not been in effect for very long. If it had been around in 1968, it would have been a level 6, as the Hong Kong flu was in fact a pandemic. Remember that pandemic simply means that a disease is spreading in several parts of the world simultaneously. It does not indicate whether that disease is severe or mild.

A very important fact to point out..

Local labs cannot test for swine flu specifically.

The CDC and WHO is only reporting postitive swine flu tests.

Test kits have been shipped to CA and NY - with an expected arrival date of May 3rd. If they prove to be accurate, other states will receive them as well..

I reside in upstate NY.. Yesterday our area received a large supply of Tamiflu and the other drug - which for the life of me, I can't remember the name of.. LOL..

Medical officials in NYC clearly stressed that all of the cases they had dealt with down there (as of yesterday) were mild - and in most cases medication was started within the 48-hour time frame and patients have responded well.. (Either currently recovering or have already recovered.)

Last night our local news reported that the county my DD and her family live in (one county away from where I am now) had 2 "confirmed" cases and 1 "suspected" case.. Today they recanted and said there were 2 "suspected" cases..

Whatever your concerns are, go to the CDC site (cdc.gov) and follow their precautions - not what your cousins, sisters, brother-in-law's uncle (who happens to be a doctor) has said..

You will find the information is pretty basic - along the same lines of the typical flu or any other contagious disease that you don't particularly want to contract (hand washing; sneezing into your elbow; avoiding exposure to others who are known to be ill; etc.).. The site is updated daily - sometimes twice a day - and an excellent source for reliable information that is pertinent to those living in the United States..

The most important thing to remember is that there in no need to panic.. Stay informed - visit the CDC site on a regular basis - and continue to live your lives according to the advice given there..

The "'media" is far from a reliable source - they change their stories from minute to minute - and as I was quite annoyed to learn this morning, even our own local news can't get their facts straight!!

If you want information that has even a shred of reliability, your best bet is the CDC.. The information is there - it's free - it's unbiased.. Use it! :thumbsup2

And for those heading to WDW - have a great time and tell the "mouse" I said "hello"..:goodvibes

I'm very confused. Just like everyone else here. The gov't says one thing, the health officials say another, the media says another, who is right?

Guess it's just better to be safe than sorry!

I just had a phone conversation with a client who wanted to meet with me, I said no. He said he would come to my office I said no your daughter is home with a flu-like illness. He laughed me off the phone.

Am I the crazy one here? I don't know. The vast consensus on these boards is that I am. I have the city closing schools, cancelling weddings, cancelling all public gatherings over 20 people yet when I refuse to see a client whose dd is sick with a flu, I am the one overreacting?!?!?

I don't know what to think! I just want this all to be OVER! :sad1:
