Sun warning - no apologies

Note to everyone. Don't forget to cream/spray the tops of your feet!!!!!

DH has burnt his feet before from forgetting to sunscreen them - and they are usually the least resistant part of him as they are usually in socks & shoes!! I never think about it as I am usually in sandals all summer long so my feet are usually tanned too :)

And as crazy as it sounds...tops of your ears :rotfl2: I forgot this in FL last time and ended up with sore/peeling ears for a couple of days...could have kicked myself! Cream everywhere else, except my ears! D'uh!

And don't forget the parting in your hair, if like me you just don't get on with wearing a hat.

Nothing worse than a burnt scalp :headache:

I also use P20 i swear by it. I hate using suncream especially when you start sweating and you feel all greasy and sticky but I find once you put P20 on and let it dry you can't tell its on the rest of the day.

I have dark hair but skin that would give snow white a run for her money but never burn with P20 :)

The other thing that makes a difference in this conversation is the time of year you visit Orlando. At the moment the sun is so much stronger than say October/November.

Good point!

The sign with the minimum SPF is up at the water parks for a reason :)

Do you know, until reading your post, I was completely unaware that there were even signs up with this advice

:rotfl: Oh yes! Even with a good SPF, I still sport my sandal tan lines for months after each trip :rolleyes1

Something else I do out of habit (or rather out of a lesson in my late teens of ultimate stupidity, lol) is rub some sun cream under my arms ..... I must have been about 15 or so and was lying outside by the pool in the sun and fell asleep with my hands behind my head. I had dutifully smothered myself with suncream - just on under my arms. I had to run in a cross country event the next day .... I say no more :rolleyes1:lmao:

Hi , we are first timers going in October this year . Me and DS never really burn but DS never has less than factor 30 but my DH does burn Quite easily . What sort of factor do you recommend in October time ? We are doing DC but not really planned a water park but might do pool at hotel on rest days . I know one of the water parks is closed at that time but might fit one in .

We all used SPF50 for this entire trip.
Water parks we still had to be mindful of not burning and in truth thought not burned needed a day or so to let our skins recover.

Our days of using SPF 15 and less are no more :goodvibes

As you'll see from other posts, it's so individual. I use factor 50 on faces or if less, never lower than a 30. You should get by with a 15 for October for those who tan easily, but perhaps a little higher for fairer skin.

I do agree that the sun is different depending when you go, but we have got nicely toasted on a couple of October trips (first half of Oct). The thing with October is that the humidity drops significantly from what it is in late September so it FEELS cooler, but that sun is still pretty warm.

I have bought factor 50 because I have fair skin and when we're at the water parks DBF will use 50, but the rest of the time probably 30. I was wondering about discovery cove though, I read they give you factor 30, anyone got any experience of this??

I had also been worrying about this.. esp as we have a 10 month old with us... He and Ds1 who is 5 never go anywhere in the heat we've been having here in less than 50.. It really worries me

Got burned at Castaway Cay last year using factor 20, I am not fair skinned. Using factor 30+ for our upcoming trip in three weeks. The children get factor 70.

I didn't know factor 70 was even available? Recently read reviews after a big convo on fb about suncream. Apparently a f30 protects from 96% of rays and a f50 from 98% so it doesn't make a big difference. Really important to check the UVA * rating though... I have a f50 for the baby with 4*, a f30 for me and dh which has 4* and a factor 50 kids one for ds1 which is only 3*.. he'd be better off in our f30... very weird :confused3

It was a few years back when we went to DC but I remember they gave us sunscreen from these big pots was quite thick but safe for the marine life. Plus you can also opt for a wetsuit.

How much of you does the wetsuit cover? Is it just half arms and legs or full body? Also what age are they from? Although I have a f50 sun suit for baby which is full arm and leg...

I use factor 50 on myself and my daughters. I am still worried about my baby getting burnt even with sun cream. I cover her with a cellular blanket when she's in her pushchair and keep her out of the sun still. She won't wear a hat so I have been keeping her indoors during the heatwave during the hottest part of the day. plus Sun stroke is horrible.

I'm worried about my 10 month old too... totally paranoid... but we plan to only be in parks in the mornings and in hotel / restaurants from 11-3 and then pool after that... so hoping that will help

Note to everyone. Don't forget to cream/spray the tops of your feet!!!!!

And the soles of baby feet...

Thanks for all the interesting thoughts folks! Can my boys really burn after a few hours in f50 at TL? we will most likely be there at opening or for a couple of hours before closing, so not in the heat of the day. Please help me feel better about this trip xx

I know what you mean - the only time I have ever been sunburned in Florida was in December! Did not appreciate the strength of the sun at that time of year and hadn't used sunscreen.

With a baby I'd really be thinking a lot more about covering up than sunscreen. Obviously you'd need both, but what I did was use the buggy shade when he was in the stroller. It was like this one, but I can't remember the brand:

And when he was in the carrier I used a parasol like this one:

Or the cute ones you can buy at WDW - but we lost ours!

Thanks Sundancer :) I have a hood extender thing like that, so will make sure I pack it. We're also hiring the double buggy from city strollers (?) which seems to have super large hoods... he's going to want to play in the pool etc though... need to try and figure out how to get him to keep a hat on ;)

We bought our baby a UV protective swimsuit at Blizzard Beach :) It's also where we bought the spray on sun protection which I really can't rate high enough! Every morning we'd tell our children to stand still with arms out to their sides like a T and spray them all over - it was done in seconds and gave a long time of protection.

With regards to hats - I work with just keep putting it back on with as little fuss as possible. It's a pain in the bum for me but it works when they finally get bored of it! Of course if I get annoyed at the hat removal then it becomes a game...
But if baby is *really* determined, then I'd get a tie-on one like this:
http://polarnopyret.co.uk/wide-brimmed-uv-baby-sunhat

In fact, that's a really good price for a POP product, I might have to buy one for my baby's trip next year!

I have an all in one long sleeve and leg sun suit for him too... which is a good point... just his face to worry about. I will cover him in f50 and I guess his length of time in the water will be fairly short, so we can seek out some shade...

haven't got any spray cream.. will look at it when we are there. Thanks :)

Don't underestimate the power of the sun in the water parks.

I used SPF30, waterproof, and applied it every hour - still ended up mildly burning my shoulders and back. When I sunbathe I used to use tanning oil in Europe - never again.

Be VERY careful in the water parks!

I would echo this. My 11 year old DD is very fair skinned and has a face full of freckles. As a result I still insist on her wearing a sun safe short sleeve top in the water parks. She'd rather be flaunting her stuff in a bikini but I insist. Anyway. They have some quite nice ones in the next directory. Not too babyish. This has stopped her getting burnt ever in Florida. She learnt her lesson last week getting a bit burnt locally in a paddling pool! Now she knows mum knows best ;)

Your post made me chuckle :) I also have an 11 year old daughter so we could probably relate a lot of similar stories, lol. DD asked me a couple of weeks ago, while applying her sun cream, "Does sunburn hurt?" My initially reaction was "Well YES!!" as though it was a silly question. It later occurred to me that DD has never been sunburned so she's never experienced it. What is a sun safe shirt?

Sorry badly described. One of those UV sun safe swimming costumes. They do 3 piece sets in Next so you get swim shorts, a bikini top and a total cover short sleeve top. She hates those tops!!!!!!!!!!

I spoke to someone at DC today, and asked about sunblock. I can take my own f50 for our baby and also we can choose to have full body arm and leg wetsuits so that only leaves faces. The lady was very helpful and helped to ease my worries about our day at DC :)
