~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

Welcome to the team, Rafiki X 3 !!!!!

DD had her third meet of the year Saturday ( and the first one I've ever missed, pout, pout ). She got her best bars score (1st place, 9.075) ever. The other scores were good for her, but not her best. Still, she ended up beating her best prior AA by .625. She got a 35.475! She was so excited!

We are going to see the Olympic Tour of Champions this Saturday.

Nastia Liukin is from the Dallas area, but we didn't go see her when she came to town. We should have. The girls loved watching gymnastics during the Olympics.

As for me, you can just bring me Michael Phelps.

Just wanted to post about the Gymnastics Tour of Superstars. It was FANTASTIC! We had a group from our gym go, so we bought group tickets which allowed us in early for Chalk Talk. We were under the impression from the paperwork that it would be limited to a couple of hundred people, but it turned out to be many more. Nastia, Shawn, Kevin Tan, and Sasha Artemev were the speakers. They talked about the tour and life on the road, as well as what the Olympics were like, then they answered some questions. After that we moved out to our regular seats and waited for the show to start.
The show was very good. The men, I think, really stole the show. As much as all of our girls loved seeing Shawn and Nastia, the men were much more entertaining. Shannon Miller is still amazing after all of these years, and the rhythmic gymnasts were very impressive.
After the show, there were 6 of us (3 moms and 3 girls) walking around. We had a couple of girls who really wanted an autograph. They were hoping for Shawn, but would have been happy with anyone. We found the buses, but we were up in a parking lot that looked 20 feet down on them and we weren't allowed near the railing. After about 15 minutes or so of standing there, we realized that we could go around (a good ways around) and some of the gymnasts would come out to the road and sign autographs. We RAN down there just in time to miss Shawn and Jonathan Horton. The girls were devastated. Well, thanks to the running, I had an asthma attack. Of course the guest services guy was a jerk, which is a long story that I won't get into, but it is relevant in a minute.
When we walked back up to the parking lot overlooking the buses, I found out that the jerk's boss was nearby and went to complain. At this point the others were allowed over to the railing. After I complained I walked up to the rest of my party just in time to see Shawn Johnson walk off of her bus which was just under the railing. She very graciously agreed to give autographs if we threw things down and she threw them back up to us. So, if I hadn't had to complain, we would have missed her.
After an hour of waiting, walking, etc. the girls were ECSTATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
And let me say that Shawn Johnson is an absolute sweetheart. She answered a couple of questions and truly made an impression on the girls and this mom.
As for the show, if you have a chance to go, please do. It was very good and of course much of the music if from the Radio Disney album Girls Rock.

3 more to go. DD made STATE!!! She is so excited. She did very well yesterday. She fell on her bar dismount, but recovered quickly to continue. She got her best scores of the season on everything but bars (darn fall...LOL)

Vault: 8.95
Bars: 8.2
Beam: 8.825
Floor: 8.625
All Around: 34.6

& the Team placed 3rd. Yeah!!!!!

Exactly one year ago tomorrow, DD was in surgery having part of her intestine removed. How did she commemorate this anniversary? With her first ever First Place AA! She also got first on beam and bars. Needless to say, she is walking on clouds! She truly has made a remarkable comeback.

Her team got 3rd AA! We are soooooo proud of all of them!

Congratulations to your dd - what a difference a year makes!!! :wizard:

DD was a gymnast for 8 years - retired last spring as a Level 7 - didn't look back. Until this week...now she says she misses gymnstics. She misses her friends from the gym (some of whom she's known since preschool) and misses the discipline and commitment. She'd go back if she could just do floor and vault.;)

She's filled her time with cheer and athletics but she still misses having a "thing" that no one else at school was as good at.

I can see where you are coming from. I think the kids like having that "something" that they excel at. Is she planning to go back to team?

My dd started her season a few weeks ago and now we are about to hit the season full force, she has a meet this Saturday, then 2 weeks after that, then another 1 week after that and so on and so on. Busy, busy, busy!

Good luck to everyone who is starting their season! We had state for compulsory season a couple of weeks before Christmas. DD's age group had 24 girls (all born within 5 months of each other). Scores, particularly on vault, were crazy high. Anyway, DD finished 4th AA and 2nd on bars. She bested her AA by over half a point. She is so excited about working her level 5 skills now.
Best of luck to everyone!

I am glad to see this thread come back to life. DD started her season at the beginning of the month. She was 24/65 AA all ages for level 4. She had a fall on beam and 2 falls on bars, but her floor she was 4/65 with a 9.2. One week from Sunday is her next meet, hoping she does well.

The best part of the upcoming season is my ticker. We are spending a week at WDW for her to compete in the Sand Dollar Invite.

Nice to see you, Missypie. Is DD going to try to come back. Can she be an event specialist and just do the 2 events?

DS had his first meet at WOGA in Dec. They have changed the scoring for the boys this year. Now all scores start at a 15.20 and you can earn up to .8 in bonus. I didn't have high hopes for this meet but I was pleasantly surprised.

DS only had .4 bonus on Pommel and .4 on Floor. He left out his back tuck on floor and he fell on his front tuck and his front handspring. The first time he ever made it over the vault was at this meet, not even during warm-up, and boys only get one vault. He was spotted on his back uprise on Rings (1.5 deduction).

DS ended up placing 4th on Pommels, 7th on rings, 8th on P-Bars and 9th All Around. With all the skills he is missing and the falls I was so proud with how he did. He is very strong so he does well on the strength events but he has no rhythm, which makes it hard to run. This affects his tumbling and vault.

His next meet is next week-end so I can't wait to see how he does. The meet is the Ricky Deci meet. It is men's and women's all levels. It is put on by our gym. Is anyone here coming?

Hey all,

Anybody going to the Presidential Classic Feb 20-22 at the Wide World of Sports?

Nice to see some fellow Disers at at meet. :thumbsup2

Nope, good luck though. I'd love to go to a meet in Disney, but it's not happening this yr (obviously, I do not pick the meets for our team ;) )

We will be at the Chicago Style meet Feb. 6-8, which is a really big one - anyone else?
