~*~ Stick It! A thread for Gymnastics Parents ~*~

Good idea Barb! DD has Judges Cup on Sept. 6. It's in Raleigh, which is about a 4 hour drive. Because of her surgery last year, she will compete level 4 again. There are 2 level 4 sessions. Most of our meets have it completely divided by age, but for Judges Cup, they like to keep all of the girls from one gym in the same level together. So our session is all of the top gyms. You know, the ones that always seem to be on their game at every meet. Our owner told me that that is a huge compliment to us, because our girls are really improving, and we are starting to be a force to contend with. So, it should make for a long day.

Can I join? I am a super gymnastics newbie. I am enrolling my 7 and 4 year olds tomorrow for their first class! My 4 year old will do the preschool class, and my 7 year old will do the beginning gymnastics class. Right now, it's just rec gymnastics, but who knows what could happen? Especially with my 4 year old! My 7 year old..well, not great on the coordination, so we will see with her. (She's like me!)

Welcome Amy! It is a fun sport to watch. A little terrifying with some skills, but when you realize the confidence and discipline those kids have, it's all worth it.

Welcome Amy, I too have a 7 year old DD. She has been in gymnastics since she was 3, she will be competing level 4 this year.

So far this is what our meet schedule in looking like:

Dec 6-7 Peppermint Twist, MN
??Jan 23-25 Sand Dollar Invitational at WDW
Feb 6-8 IGI Chicago Style Meet
Feb 20-21 Salto Invitational Milwaukee, WI
March 6-8 Harley Invitational, Milwaukee, WI

We should get 1 or 2 meets more. We are bypassing our compulsory season in WI and starting to compete in the winter season, so that the girls can up train and be more comfortable with the level that they are in. They will then start the compulsory season in fall of 2009 at the next level. DD is actually doing well up training level 5 she has pretty much everything except the vault on the table, kip(she is so darn close), and cast squat on jump to high bar.

DD and I will be going to the Gymnastics Superstar Tour in Nov at the Bradley Center. Lower level 4 rows up. I cannot wait. I think that I am more excited than DD is.

Good luck to all the gymmies with their upcoming seasons.

Barb

Hi Amy and welcome! Such exciting times for your little ones, I hope they love the sport and stick with it and join all of our kiddos doing team!

My dd will be a level 8 this yr and she will be 12 in Sept. She doesn't start competing until December and I have no idea where her meets will be - at least I have a school yr schedule!

I leave for Disney tomorrow (can't wait  ) and am hoping that when I return I will at least see where they are competing in December, but I won't hold my breath.

I can't believe dd's last day of Summer practice is tomorrow, I felt like she just started yesterday....

Welcome!

I have a couple of questions for everyone.

How many girls are in the same level as your's?

My Level 4 has 11 girls.

My Level 6 has 2 girls and they are the highest level at the gym at the moment. They practice with the Level 5's and they are 2 Level 5's also.

How much of the practice is spent with the team coach?

This summer the coach hasn't spent as much time with the girls as I would like. The lack of supervision by the team coach has caused some of the girls to act out and goof off. They've spent more time with assistants, high school and college girls, then I would like. The head coach also runs practices and other things instead of directly working with the girls. So I'm very curious what happens at other gyms.

Well, it's really hard to say, but last yr she had 6 Level 7 girls with her. This Summer she has been training with anywhere between 6-8 girls. I am not sure how things will fall out yet as to who is doing what level. Some might repeat 8 and be with my dd (a first yr 8) and there are 3 other first yr level 8s too. All depends on if they get their skills or not for 9.

The way our team works is that we have apparatus coaches. So the girls change rotations to different apparatus, but the coaches stay at the same place. We have a total of 5 coaches, if not a 1 or 2 more depending on the day. Our gym considers conditioning a rotation, so that is the need for te 5th coach.

We have 11 level 4s competing at Judges Cup. 5 are repeats and 6 are newbies. We have some other girls that will compete level 4, but won't start until midseason. We have about 7 level 5, 2 level 6 and 2 level 7. We also have a prep-op team and a boys team. I'm not sure how many are on those.
As for the coaches, we have 2 team coaches for compulsory. At least one of them is at every practice. The owners also help coach team, so they are usually around. For my DD, who is homeschooled this year, she is in a day practice of just homeschooled girls. There are never more than 6 girls at that practice, so only one of the team coaches is there.

I have 2 daughters 10, and 7 (almost 8). They have been in gymnastics for 3 years, but our gym is new (open 5 years) and just formed a competition team last year.
My oldest will start competing Level 4 in September. Not sure how long she will compete but she is extremely excited. She does well on most oeverything but the bars....not her best. She is the tallest of the group and just plain tall for her age (4'9" about)
The youngest is still trying to make the team. She can do a round off back handspring, but cannot do her shoot thru 7 front hip circle. Any ideas of things that can help with that? She is is frustrated that this is keeping her back.

Obviously arm strength is not their strong point. We are working on that.

This is a cool thread,I need to get reading.:surfweb:

This year at the gym we will have:
Level 3-3
Level 4-17 Mine is a level 4--one of the youngest of the 17.
Level 5-9
Level 6-1
level 7- 0 or 1
level 8- 1
Boys: 12 or 13
A couple of the 4's are questionable, and may actually do level 3.

How much of the practice is spent with the team coach?
The owner of the gym are really the only ones that work with the team kids. They do have one person that helps them, but this year the preschool and rec kids will have other people coaching them so that the owners can concentrate on the team.

My dd is a level 8 this year SHe has 5 including her starting off the season. However since in NJ we compete level 7 in fall and 8 in spring, there are 9 girls who may or may not move up after 7 states. At least 3 definitely will.

:yay: :yay: :yay: We are definately doing the Sand Dollar at Disney. :yay: :yay: :yay:

I booked hotel, park tickets and flights for DD and myself tonight.

DH and DS are staying home as DH refuses to fly. I am leary on taking DS along because he is in 3rd grade this year and I am dreading the homework, also we are taking at family WDW trip in April so he will miss 6 days then.

Barb

hey Barb that's great. We have been trying to talk our hc into letting us go to this meet for years to no avail.Where are you staying?

All Star Sports. This will be a first for me, as we have always stayed at either WL or the Poly. We will be going back in April to the Poly for our family vacation. HC first choice was a meet in San Diego, but it is the weekend after the Sand Dollar and that won't work into the schedule to well as we are going to Chicago the first week of Feb for the Chicago Style meet. They thought that was too much traveling in a week.

I booked thru WDW sports and did pretty well $665 for 4 nights, and 4 day park hoppers. The regular WDW site the quote for the same was over $1000. DD is so excited to fly. We have non stop from Milwaukee to Orlando and are using magical express. I am also so excited. I hope the team has fun and does well.

There are 12 girls on my daughter's level 4 team. She is the 2nd youngest at 6 years old (the youngest is one month younger than DD). Other than those two, the others are all 8-12 years old.

The girls spend time with the head coach every practice. Usually they rotate through the events and the coaches each stay with one event. So, the girls work with all three coaches every practice. There is some lack of supervision b/c there is only 1 coach at any given time and 12 girls, which leads some of the less focused ones to goof off and play around.

How many girls are in the same level as your's?
WE have 12 girls total on our team (new team in its 2nd year). 5 level 5s and 7 level 4s.
There are also 10 Pre-team girls

How much of the practice is spent with the team coach?
We have 2 official "team " coaches and a pre-team coach and a helper. This season the girls are rotating between the coaches and apparatice. Each coach has their speciality.

Our first competition is September 21st.

Dd's meet season doesn't officially start until November, but we had a great night at gym last night.

She flipped her Yurchenko, did a beautiful L8 bar routine (first one that she really has hit) and last night did a RO-LO with 1/2 twist dismount off of beam. She is not competing this dismount, but she is definitely working towards a full and if she can get that, she will use that for her L8 dismount.

Oh and today is her birthday, so early birthday gifts for herself at the gym! :wizard:

Our first meet....first for season and first for us is this Sunday. My oldest age 10, competing level 4, is so excited and cannot wait. I'm not sure what to hope for scorewise, I just want her to do well and not feel bad in the end. She is tall and thin for her age (almost a head taller that the rest of her teammates) and has really struggled on her bar skills and ROBH. I'm hoping her vault and beam will balance out and she'll do well.

What a GREAT practice! And Happy Birthday to your DD!

My DD had her first meet of the season on Sept. 6th. She is competing level 4 again because of her surgery. Anyway, the meet was our Judge's Cup, and it was a great meet for her. She got her first 9! It was a 9.15 on floor which got her 2nd place. She got 3rd on bars, 4th AA, and 5th on beam (which she had a bad day on, so not sure how she got 5th :confused3 ). Anyway, it was a great day. Our next meet is in a week and a half.
