Hurray, my membership finally came through and I was able to book 5 nights at SSR in October (replacing part of our Wilderness Lodge vacation plans).

Is there anything particular I should ask for besides a non-smoking room? What views are available? A water view might be nice, should I ask for a particular building?

What does everyone else like about SSR?

Congress Park has the water view and is far away from themed pool and checkin area with food service but has its own pool. It has a wonderful view

the area right next to the themed pool is called spring something or another and it is by far our favorite because of the short walk to bus stop, themed pool and food.

The newest area ( which opened in the last couple of months) would be our least favorite.

It looks like the Spring is the closest for parking too, if you have a car.

The parking was just fine around any of the areas. I would not let that influence your decision. Have a wonderful time. We did.

If you want to have a view of DTD at night and be very close to DTD, go with Congress Park. There are four buildings at CP, each with an elevator in the center of the building. The leisure pool at CP is very nice with a view of DTD.

If you want to be close to the main pool and Artist's Palette, go with The Springs. There are three buildings at the Springs. THere is no leisure pool at the Springs, just the main themed pool. The large central laundry room is also near the main pool. So if you have a studio, that could be a benefit. More washers and dryers in this location.

Parking is no problem at SSR. Lots of parking in each area.

We just returned from a week at Saratoga. We stayed in the Springs room 3610. Although this is a view of the parking lot, your close to main pool, resturant and bus stop....

we returned today from a 6 week vacation on site. 3 weeks in a studio at OKW.. Fantastic can never fault anything about OKW we love it. 1 week in BCV 2 bed when rest of the family came to join us. Absolutely plush, Great cast fantastic room overlooking villa pool We were in heaven
Then we moved to SSR for first visit. Hated it absolutely hated it We were told at check in (9 a.m) we would be in Congress park and that we had a pool and downtown disney view. Boy were we impressed. We hadn't made any request apart from non-smoking a must for me as after 2 serious pulmonary embolisms I have only 1 good lung and asthma.. We went out for the day as obviously the room wasn't ready and returned at 9 pm Pool view? we could see a slither of blue that might have been a pool Downtown view? we could see a strip of white belonging to Cirque. That in itself would not have affected our time at SSR as we are a very upbeat family and enjoy ourselves spending time together and although the promised views would have been lovely they were not our main concern
Our main gripes were the miniscule balcony for a family of 8. 2 people filled it so no night time balcony chats for us. Opening my bedroom curtains to see 2 guys on their balcony which looked directly into our bedroom People smoking on their balconies above us and below us so actually not just stopping me from sitting out but even leaving us no chance of opening the tiny balcony door. I was seriosly unimpressed with the stairwells which were dingy and which had cigarette ends lying in them every evening . They reminded me of the rundown areas of the town I live in. Certainly not somewhere I'd pay thousands of pounds to stay in.
When we got into our room the first night the trash bins were full and there was no toilet paper or washing powder. What a let down. I tried everything that night and next morning to move back to OKW or BCV or anywhere but was told no 2 beds available We did make the very best of our trip and it hasn't put me off ownership Just SSR
All that said the pools were great and the landscaping is all right.Everything is too spread out and although the walk to the main pool didn't bother us and there were plenty of buses we just never felt at home the way we do at other resorts. Would never stay there again
We weren't impressed by the artists pallette either.

We had a nice room at Congress park...dead on view of Fultons and DTD..balcony was large enough for 4 and walking distance to DTD. Nice quiet pool nearby and laundry close too (we were in a stuido)...Just wish I could remember the room number I do remember we were on the 3rd floor.

The past 2 times we have stayed at SSR we requested non-smoking and a DTD view. Both times our requests were met and we were able to watch the fireworks from the balcony.

oh dear and we have just bought at SSR :(

I wouldn't panic - there are those that love it, like it, and even those that hate it. We bought sight unseen, before it was built, and have stayed there twice so far. We love it so much! I'm surprised about the small balcony comment - they all seem to be the same size to me. We stayed at BCV this past June with friends who are BCV owners and we weren't impressed - walking to Epcot was cool, and I liked the covered walkways, but the villa building was very sterile and maze-like.

Congress Park is kinda far from the themed pool and food, but has its own pool which is nice. The Springs look like an ideal location for the themed pool, food, and buses. I haven't seen the Paddocks yet, so I'm not sure where they are in relation to the others.

pheew thanks
My son is paralised and was hoping to see DTD fireworks at night from say a first floor (we need a 2br handicapped unit). how likely or lucky :) do you think we would be to ask and get such a thing baring mind we are coming from the UK and our flight doesn't land until 17.30 :(

Well, I would think they have to honor your request for a handicapped unit, and just ask for the DTD view - they will do their best to help you out. Sometimes you may have to wait for it though.

I make all the ressie's in this house and when we got there in June, DH suddenly wants to upgrade to a 1 bdrm with a DTD view - AT CHECK IN! And we were able to do it, so anything is possible!

You will LOVE the themed pool for your son! It has a zero entry area and there's a water-wheelchair so you just roll right in. I thought I saw one of the hot tubs with a handicapped helping arm to lower people in - that can be very theraputic.

SSR has elevators so you may get a room on an upper level with a better DTD view.

Have a great trip!

You will love SSR. It is a beautiful resort. You can park relatively close to your villa. Each building has an elevator. The leisure pool at Congress Park is beautiful as is the themed main pool. SSR is spread out a bit, but you actually feel like you are coming home to a community instead of staying in a hotel.

:sunny:
I bought in 2004 and saw SSR for the first time in April 2005...
I'll NEVER regret buying there @ SSR!
1st, let me tell you the resort is far from being completed!
2nd, I see 2 choices right now for you...
1:Congress Park...view of DTD with fireworks @ 12 midnight(30 secs)
2:The Springs(where I stayed)close to theme pool,Artist Palette,
registration, bus stop and boat dock to OKW and DTD.
3rd,although there's only one restaurant now, there is definite plans for a
sit-down eatery...it'll be behind the Artist Palette's building occupying
an area where there's a awning/patio area
Just for your info...every morning I went out for a walk around SSR at 6:30-
7a.m. and loved the peacefulness of the resort and it's colors...I covered
every inch of that place...I had to pinch myself...owning a piece of the Mouse! You've made a good choice in SSR! It only gets better...CONGRATS!

:rotfl: You sound exactly like me! I also bought in '04 and went for the 1st time in April. And have 3 more trips by the end of '06 in the works :cheer2:
I went for walks there every morning and/or evening, too! I knew the minute I got there, it felt like ''home''.

Ali, you have nothing to worry about, you're going to enjoy SSR, hopefully as much as I do! I was in your same situation, I was afraid I'd hate it because so many other people disliked it. I'm so glad I was wrong!

Ask for either Congress Park or The Springs sections. The Paddock (the new section) is partially open or may be fully open by now. I didn't think to ask for a section when I booked and we got stuck in The Paddock which isn't close to anything..everything is a good walk. I like to walk, but not with a 2 year old on very hot days.

Don't worry about others opinions of SSR, it's best to see it yourself and make up your own mind :)

We went for 2 weeks last October/November and loved it.

I can appreciate how annoying it would be to have an unclean room and feel misled about the view you will have. I imagine that they just made a mistake not cleaning the room, which could happen anywhere. People smoking on their balconies could also happen anywhere, it's not really SSR's fault. I must admit I'd find that annoying too though, shame people don't think about others more.

Others have posted that they didn't like the outside hallways, but we found them fine. To us it's just a walkway to your room, and I prefer it to the hotel corridor feel of some places.

It's all down to personal preference, I know we would rather stay at SSR than any of the other DVC resorts because it feels more like staying in your own holiday apartment rather than staying in a hotel (OKW excluded), and the theming and location is perfect for us.

I think they should build another themed pool in those outlying sections. Otherwise, no one is ever going to want to stay in those. Everyone will always be requesting the other ones, and invariably a bunch of people will be starting their vacations disappointed. Another themed pool - maybe even nicer than the one already there - is just the carrot SSR needs to get people into those outlying sections.

I can see your point, I really can. But I don't think that some people will 'never' stay in those sections due to not having a themed pool. It's not important to everyone. I could care less about a themed pool. I actually prefer the quiet pools, because they are that, quiet. Maybe when I have kids it will be important, but it's a non issue with me now.
