Pepe's Pizza. Wooster Street, New Haven CT. Look it up.

Best. Pizza. Ever.

About 2 months ago we ate at Pepes in Manchester because we were up there (we live shoreline ct) and it was so bad. We have eaten it a handful of times before and it was good. It was really burnt, in fact they burnt my sons (no cheese due to allergy) and told us they were cleaning the cutter. I kept looking and did not see them cleaning a darn thing. As his pizza came out about 15 min later (we had the rest of our pizza) the waiter said it was burnt. Now why not tell us that.

Add to the fact that he and I got bacon and it wasn't cooked which made the whole pizza greasy. Gag!

But pizza depends on my mood. I like our local Davincis here in my town but the town next to us makes a crappy pizza from that same name/chain. It's thin crust and the gravy, aka sauce is pretty good.

When I was a young adult a friends family opened a pizza place and what made their pizza yummy was the gravy as it tasted like my grandmothers.

We have pizza made by Greeks here and it isn't my fav but sometimes I am in the mood. And there is another local place made by not Italians, I am thinking they are from South America, and it's ok but I like their feta and spinach whit pizza.

My sisters love this place called colony, I am not a fan maybe because our first time there we had over an hour wait.

I can't find a pic but here in Upstate NY there is a thing called "Tomato Pie". It's cold pizza sans mozzarella cheese but sprinkled with parm(yeah yeah I can't spell the whole word). The crust and sauce have to be delicious for it to be right but when it is... OMG.

There's a place near Manayunk PA that has the best tomato pie. One of the ladies I worked with would bring it in every few months as a treat for the office. I forget the name of the lace but it is sooooooooooo good. Maybe Marchiano's or Sarcone's???

It's so good right?
I get mine from Perecca's in Schenectady.

This is literally my kids favorite pizza.

The fact that it is "hot and ready" makes it even better. We can just stop in and have a pizza on the way home without any planning. Very convenient!

New York is the only place that has good pizza . I don't know if it is something in the water around here but pizza in other places is not good
I'm going to say the NYC metro area - much better pizza in areas of NJ and CT than upstate NY. Forget about PA.

We were in CT this past weekend. A doctor I work with who spent eight years at Yale/New Haven (but is originally from the South) told me we HAD to try Modern Apizza. Turns out we weren't close enough to New Haven so we didn't get to go. But I thought I'd just throw that in here for this thread. It does look good to me!

Ok I have to give a shout-out to this company as it's a favorite of our family. A little background. A couple of years ago we'd arrived in NJ after a long ride, checked into our hotel, then went back out looking for a quick bite to eat. We were in what seemed to be primarily a residential area, and there weren't many choices of restaurants, plus none of us could really agree on what we wanted to eat. We drove around for quite a while, sort of in the middle of nowhere, lol (aside from lots of houses with multiple deer grazing in front yards, which sort of blew our minds). Finally we came upon a little plaza that had a small pizza place so we threw up our hands and said lets just go here. Turned out it was a hidden gem, and we had one of the best "pizza experiences" we'd ever had anywhere - from the BYOB, to the come -as-you-are-yet-nice-ambiance inside, with metal picnic tables and candles, lol, to the brick oven where the pizzas fired up in just a few minutes, to the nice salads, friendly staff, and omg the pizzas! So delicious! We've tried to get back there for the past two years and haven't made it - the second time just a couple of weeks ago when we were nearby they were closed on a Monday, bummer. Anyway, give this place a try!

They have trucks, too.

We did discover a local place that has pizzas that are similar to LPC, thankfully!

The thing I have found with Pepe's, is that the newer satellite restaurants don't seem to be as good. I live in Guilford which is only about 20 minutes from New Haven so the original location is convenient for me. My family lives in Fairfield County so we've eaten at the Fairfield location and it's ok, but not as good as New Haven. Likewise with the restaurant at Mohegan Sun Casino. I don't know if it's a quality control issue, because the New Haven location still has family working there, or the ovens or what. Maybe it's because I've been going to Pepe's since before I could remember...

Modern is excellent also, and if the Pepe's line is too long I go there. On occasion I will go directly there.--some family members prefer it. Modern often has quite a line as well.

These two places are my favorite places for pizza, hands down.

I haven't been to Pepes in NH in quite a few years (I live in Deep River and grew up in FFld county) and it was good. I have been to Mohegan sun as well and it was good but we were up at buck land hills dicks and decided to go there...biggest mistake ever!

I still haven't been to modern. Our son has a dairy allergy so going out for pizza isn't something we have been able to do for his first 12 years, now we can since he can tolerate cooked dairy but I still order him a chees free pizza and don't have to worry about it cooking in the same oven as one with cheese.

My family that lives in Ffld county loves Colony.

I am partial to ham and green peppers on my pizza, but my kids only like black olives (yuck!).

I make pizza from scratch at least twice a month and I like to use onion powder and dry milk in my crust and leave it in the fridge for a few days so it develops a bit of a sourdough taste and extra elasticity. Plenty of garlic, ground rosemary and basil, and red pepper flakes in the sauce. And a blend of cheeses that includes Swiss, Parmesan, provolone, low-fat mozzarella, and sharp cheddar. Before placing it in the oven I spread a generous amount of good olive oil on the baking sheet and over the crust.

We don't eat out much so I have no idea where the best pizza is locally; if we're ordering out for a party or something I'll order from any place that has a good coupon deal. I don't think Pittsburgh is know for their pizza anyway.

When I was in college we used to eat at the O (a Pittsburgh landmark) a lot and some of my friends loved their pizza, but I was never impressed, it drew a big college crowd because it was the cheapest place around and had huge portions. If I recall, if you folded the pizza you could actually pour the grease off it.

All these pizza pics are making me really hungry and I'm supposed to be on a diet. Thanks guys.

Giovanni's Pizza, multiple locations in eastern Kentucky and West Virginia:

It's a weird, weird thing. I've had pizza everywhere throughout the country, and I subconsciously compare them all to the pizza I ate growing up and find those others wanting. And talking with fellow expatriates who live around the country, they do the same. Maybe (probably) it's not the best, but it is to me.

Bonus weirdness: they serve a flavor of dressing called "red." As in "Chef's Salad with red dressing, please." It's hard to describe what it tastes like--a little tangy, a lot sweet, not creamy, but not really a vinaigrette, either. The best way to describe it is that it tastes "red." It probably has enough additives in it to qualify as a chemical weapon, but I guarantee the next time I go home I'll get a Giovanni's pizza and salad with red dressing.

The best pizza is a local place, but their service is so bad I refuse to name them!

It's the same here. the good pizza places all seem to have just terrible service.

I am a Chicago style guy myself, and I used to say my favorite was Gino's, but once in Orlando I had the deep dish from Giordano's and it was probably the best pizza I ever had. There is ONE place to get that kind of pizza around here, and you guessed it, the service stinks.

Sorry, I don't have pics.
