Can you gag me?We never buy spam unless I have to get together a gag gift!
We had a friend in CA who used to eat a lot of spam with mac and cheese while he was single. The first meal he cooked for his (now) wife was mac and cheese with spam.....
I don't eat meat anyway, so spam would be even grosser. We also have cut out most processed foods completely (no soda, no soups, and such) other than chips....my family loves potato chips. I figure that is that is their only vice, we are doing fairly well.
Yes, it is expensive, but it also isn't a meat that you typically eat alone. It goes on a sandwich, in a casserole, or is mixed with eggs or noodles or whatever, so that cuts cost over serving a chicken breast whole on a plate.
Dawn
I love Spam (freid spam, egg and cheese on toast.. omg yummy), but the first thing I thought when I saw that mentioned somewhere was "Spam ain't cheap". I can buy a pack of tofu for 2 or 2.50 and it is enough for 2-3 days, so that has become my replacement meat. Our chicken here has gotten outragous. 3-4 bucks for one meal!!! I don't plan on buying any chicken this month... its tofu and burger all theway. The Spam is a treat. And Treat is the cheapo version of Spam and it is not nearly as yummy.
This just brings up memories of what we do around a campfire. We would cube Spam, put it in aluminum foil, add, potatoes, onions, and carrots in with it. Put a little olive oil in there so it doesn't stick to the foil. Wrap it closed, then put a grate over the fire and throw it on. It would cook till it sizzles, then we would open it up and eat it for dinner around the camp. Good campground fare!
Sometimes at home the kids ask for it. Then, I do the same thing and throw it on the gas grill.
No matter what I have tried with tofu, it is gross..can't figure out a way to make it good! Now..SPAM..as long as you fry it crispy like bacon, cubed or sliced, it's great!
I'm sure Spam is cheaper in Minnesota but it is on my list of meats that don't enter the house. It keeps Vienna Sausage, sardines, canned oysters, and canned salmon company on my list. What is that congealed stuff in Vienna sausage anyway?[/QUOTE]
Any meat that comes in a can is on my stay-away list. I tried Vienna sausage once because it was on sale at a really low price. An ex used to eat them all the time straight from the can so I thought I would give the little sausages a chance. Big mistake. They were nasty. I even tried washing off the congealed stuff but that just made them worse.
What is Treat?
Maybe I will re-visit Spam & do it thin & crispy. I'm still a little skeered of it.![]()

So just wondering do you know how much a can of Spam is going for in Hawaii? I wonder with it being used much more than back here in the main states what the price difference is. When I was there in 1999 I went into one of the store and I saw a bag of shrimp chips that I love(and can get here in VA) but it was like $4 for this little bag and it cost me about $3 here for a family size bag, really yummy stuff. Not a Spam eater here but Spam is crazy popular here in HI and used in a very popular finger food (like sushi) called Spam Musabi (it's basically sticky white rice, spam w/a seaweed wrapper.)
Yes, McDonald's has it on the breakfast menu. It's called the Local breakfast plate and has rice too (sticky white), we also have a deluxe version w/portuguese sausage.
