Spam sales up on BUDGET concerns?

We never buy spam unless I have to get together a gag gift!

We had a friend in CA who used to eat a lot of spam with mac and cheese while he was single. The first meal he cooked for his (now) wife was mac and cheese with spam.....

I don't eat meat anyway, so spam would be even grosser. We also have cut out most processed foods completely (no soda, no soups, and such) other than chips....my family loves potato chips. I figure that is that is their only vice, we are doing fairly well.

Yes, it is expensive, but it also isn't a meat that you typically eat alone. It goes on a sandwich, in a casserole, or is mixed with eggs or noodles or whatever, so that cuts cost over serving a chicken breast whole on a plate.

Dawn
Can you gag me? I love spam! :lovestruc

Our local news is doing a story on Spam and processed food and eating cheap but trying to make it healthy. Spam profits are up 14% since last financial report. I know I did not contribute to it because I can't see paying $3 or $2.50 a can

I love Spam (freid spam, egg and cheese on toast.. omg yummy), but the first thing I thought when I saw that mentioned somewhere was "Spam ain't cheap". I can buy a pack of tofu for 2 or 2.50 and it is enough for 2-3 days, so that has become my replacement meat. Our chicken here has gotten outragous. 3-4 bucks for one meal!!! I don't plan on buying any chicken this month... its tofu and burger all theway. The Spam is a treat. And Treat is the cheapo version of Spam and it is not nearly as yummy.

No matter what I have tried with tofu, it is gross..can't figure out a way to make it good! Now..SPAM..as long as you fry it crispy like bacon, cubed or sliced, it's great!

This just brings up memories of what we do around a campfire. We would cube Spam, put it in aluminum foil, add, potatoes, onions, and carrots in with it. Put a little olive oil in there so it doesn't stick to the foil. Wrap it closed, then put a grate over the fire and throw it on. It would cook till it sizzles, then we would open it up and eat it for dinner around the camp. Good campground fare!

Sometimes at home the kids ask for it. Then, I do the same thing and throw it on the gas grill.

Holy cow! You totally made my mouth water with that recipe. Now I know what I want for dinner!

Do the same thing with your tofu! Cube it, fry it in some olive oil and garlic. At the very end sprinkle it with parmesan cheese. My vegetarian friend brings me some sort of nutritional yeast stuff to sprinkle on it as well. It makes the house smell to high heaven when you cook it, but it's really tasty.

Spam could be free and I would not eat it. It is discusting.

I'm sure Spam is cheaper in Minnesota but it is on my list of meats that don't enter the house. It keeps Vienna Sausage, sardines, canned oysters, and canned salmon company on my list. :faint: What is that congealed stuff in Vienna sausage anyway?[/QUOTE]

Any meat that comes in a can is on my stay-away list. I tried Vienna sausage once because it was on sale at a really low price. An ex used to eat them all the time straight from the can so I thought I would give the little sausages a chance. Big mistake. They were nasty. I even tried washing off the congealed stuff but that just made them worse.

What is Treat?
Maybe I will re-visit Spam & do it thin & crispy. I'm still a little skeered of it.:scared1:

It is made by Armour and comes in a blue can.
There is also a reduced fat version

The thing about it to me is that you have to fry the stuff until it is crisp.
And slice it pretty thin.

It was really good in those salads my mom used to make.

And it is handy to have a few cans around in case of emergency.

Like my DS, who last summer when camping and somehow his car slid off a mountain road and damaged his radiator.

Anyway, he got it to a mechanic in the little town and he got back to the campgrounds, but his buddies had to go back to work and it took a week to get his car taken care of.
So, he was down in a valley in the campgrounds.
He had arranged for his grandfather to pick him up in a few days, but he ran out of food.
And where he was there were not even coke machines...
And a 10 mile walk uphill to the little store.
He did have water.

I imagine that he would have enjoyed some Treat about then.

:scared: :scared: :crazy2: :crazy2: Ok that's just too gross! I have never tried the sausages and now I never will!

I'm not a fan of spam either. If I have to eat it fried to crisp is the only way though.

How we eat Spam...We cut it into cubes, fry it with a tbls of butter. We mix up some eggs with a little milk and add it to the pan. We cook until eggs are done, turn off heat and sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese. We make these into Breakfast Burritos. One can of Spam makes 2 meals for 4 people. Sometimes we first cube up some potatoes and fry them with tomatoe and onion, then the spam and eggs. YUMMMY!!!

Not a Spam eater here but Spam is crazy popular here in HI and used in a very popular finger food (like sushi) called Spam Musabi (it's basically sticky white rice, spam w/a seaweed wrapper.)

Yes, McDonald's has it on the breakfast menu. It's called the Local breakfast plate and has rice too (sticky white), we also have a deluxe version w/portuguese sausage.

So just wondering do you know how much a can of Spam is going for in Hawaii? I wonder with it being used much more than back here in the main states what the price difference is. When I was there in 1999 I went into one of the store and I saw a bag of shrimp chips that I love(and can get here in VA) but it was like $4 for this little bag and it cost me about $3 here for a family size bag, really yummy stuff.

Oh man, I just came from Walmart! I'll check the price of Spam next time I'm in! LOL
You like the shrimp chips---ewwwwww!! LOL...

I just saw that our Giant food has Treet on sale 5 for $5 this week. I just might have to try it.

Just wanted to chime in...I love Spam! I don't eat it every week but once in a while, it is the best & b/c, like some of you, it was a staple of childhood, it is a comfort food for me...reminds me of home. Ahhhh Spam :thumbsup2

I checked on a can of Spam for you guys, LOL...$1.89 on base (which is at COST!) so probably 50% more out in town?

I have to say, I lived in HI for almost 6 years when I was a kid and never ate SPAM. Probably b/c my parents were from NY and knew better. ;)
