Southern pride gone wrong!

+1 :thumbsup2

Hmmmm, wasn't a burning cross a southern thing, too? Maybe she needs one in her own yard to truly round out her "Southern Pride". ;)

Uh, no. I can trace my lineage to the earliest European settlers of SC and can tell you that I have never burned a cross, don't know anyone who has ever burned a cross, nor have ever seen a cross burning.

This woman is a complete idiot----and that isn't a southern thing. Rednecks are universal.

So, now the woman warrants a burning cross in her front yard for daring to fly a flag?

Good to know we've come such a long way.

That is your interpretation of what that flag represents, but that doesn't mean everyone interprets it the same.
Right! Every person can interpret the flag how they like. For instance, most people associate the swastika with nazis and genocide. Yet there are people in this country that display it and claim that they are not racists, and only fly that flag because they are proud of their aryan race.

Personally, I think that people that choose to fly the confederate flag are mostly ignorant/insensitive at best, racist at worst. That good ole' southern rebelliousness that the flag represents harkens back to a time when southerners were openly owning other humans, committing crimes against humanity, and fighting a war so that all men would not be created equal. Yep, that is something to be proud of.;)

The Confederate flag does represent slavery just as much as the flag of Nazi Germany represents genocide. Both groups were fighting for other things - Confederates wanted increased state rights. Nazis wanted increased social welfare for their middle class. However, due to the atrocities that both groups were engaged in, their flags have come to represent those most heinous of ideals. I don't interpret Nazi Germany's flag as a symbol of German pride and the fight for middle class rights any more than I interpret the Confederate Flag as a symbol of Southern Pride and the fight for state rights. Others may interpret it differently, and fortunately since the North did win, everyone does have the freedom to interpret and fly whichever flag they choose. this would not have been the case if the South had won.

... Confederates wanted increased state rights...

They wanted to secede from the nation - something that was totally legal at the time. They went through the legal process and made it happen. Then the Union decided to change the rules. The Southern states never would have considered joining the union without the right to secede. In fact, none of the states would have.

Too many Americans are simply ignorant when it comes to American history.

She needs to take the stupid thing down, and probably move.

THIS.

Racism needs to GO AWAY. And she needs to get over her stupid ignorance of what she's doing is affecting other people. And "other people" need to stop letting childish foolishness get the better of them. I'll bet Dr. King is rolling in his grave at how his fellows are acting.

The KKK might have started in the south but the state they held the most power in was Indiana in the early 20th century. They are equal-opportunity racists which is kind of ironic when you think about it.

So are the neo nazis. I had to wonder how Judiasm (to them) became a race.... :confused3

I still can't take anyone that dresses up like a tampon seriously.

:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I personally would fight for her right to fly that flag. (On paper, I'm not a physical person. :) ) As distasteful as the thing is, taking away her right to fly whatever flag she wishes is at this time even worse.

Of course very few things are as horrible as slavery. Racism itself is bad but something that will hopefully continue to disappear.

Actually to some the swastika is an important symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism or other religions. Certainly, it's a symbol of racism/anti-Semitism to most people these days, but that doesn't mean that those who view it as symbolic of something else are wrong. To most people, the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism - but that doesn't make the opinions of those who feel differently any less valid.

Slavery was also legal at that time.

:lmao:You must mean "ignorant to your narrow comprehension of American history."

Yes, the southern states did want to secede from the union. Part of the reason they wanted to secede was because they felt that the federal government was ignoring state rights. They wanted increased state rights.

Let me put it another way in case you're still confused. The southern states desire for increased state rights led to their desire to secede from the union, which eventually led to war.

I hope this more detailed explanation of my statement has helped you to understand one of the reasons for the Civil War.:thumbsup2

I agree. I was just stating my personal feelings when I see either flag.

In the woman's case from the article, I do not believe it to simply be southern pride. This woman is going to extremes to shove that flag down her neighbor's throats. Had she simply left the flags hanging on her porch, I might agree that maybe she is proud of her southern heritage, however misguided I personally feel about that. But now she has chosen to get a flagpole and raise it higher than her neighbor's fences forcing them to look at it. This woman is just a low class scumbag (in my opinion).

Exactly - to judge those in the past by todays standards goes way beyond arrogance.

Yeah, that is what I meant. Keep writing. You make my point clearer with every post. :thumbsup2

MS has the Confederate flag as it's state flag. The state voted to keep it a few years ago. Every government building in MS has that flag flying in front of it.

Well, I must admit that at best she sounds like to total insensitive jerk. But maybe her neighbors approached her angrily instead of politely about the flag at first, and she reacted badly and decided that she wasn't going to cooperate with what they wanted, and things escalated from there. I'm not saying she's completely right to display the flag the way she is - forcing her neighbors to see something that she knows makes them uncomfortable isn't at all polite - but it could be that she felt they were trying to take away her right to express herself and the situation has now hit the point where neither side is willing to let the other one win.

My family is from South Carolina (Dillon County). We are as southern as they come. Everyone is moving or planning to move there once we retire. None of us take pride in the confederate flag and do not view it as part of our heritage.

I wouldn't consider South Carolina "as southern as they come" by any stretch. I would call Mississippi and Alabama about as southern as they come.

Ahhh! Now I understand. It is beyond arrogant for me to judge people that owned other people, because at the time it was legal. Thanks for clearing that up for me. What an arrogant jerk I am... judging slave owners and advocates of slavery from the past. It was perfectly legal at that time. So, that puts their behavior off limits to judgment. Now I feel bad about judging the Nazis. Under German law, they were acting legally. I just feel awful about my arrogant attitudes towards genocide and slavery. Thank you! Thank you BamaFan for putting a mirror to my face so I could see myself for the ignorant and arrogant jerk that I am.
