Actually a burning cross was a Scottish thing used to call clans to war way before there was a United States of America or a KKK.

The lady really shouldn't do what she is doing and I think it is more out of stubbornness than out of southern pride but at the same time her neighbors are letting her get to them. Anything (a symbol, a word, a picture, or whatever) only has the power you choose to give it and they are letting her and her flag have too much power in my opinion. In the end you really can't control what other people do but you can control how you let it effect you.

Love it! (the bless her heart thing not the flag). I live nearby and have read about this lady before. I was always baffled about why she is in the news because you see these flags flying all over the place. My neighbor flies one sometimes and our neighborhood is probaby 60% white/40% black.

Now, whatever she claims it means to her (ancestry, heritage, blah, blah, blah) she KNOWS how others are taking it. She is upsetting people and causing trouble, and it seems she is LOVING the attention. She needs to take the stupid thing down, and probably move.

HAYDEN, Idaho -- While most see the holiday season as one of joy and merrymaking, at least one Hayden, Idaho, resident is taking the opportunity to spread a little hate courtesy of a noose-carrying, KKK hood-wearing snowman on their front lawn.

The KKK might have started in the south but the state they held the most power in was Indiana in the early 20th century. They are equal-opportunity racists which is kind of ironic when you think about it.

There is still a vocal minority in Italy that would like a return to Fascism. I imagine something similar exists in many other places, as well.

The cross on their flag is an "X" (Cross of St. Andrews) but I was talking about literally burning crosses. I am not an expert on Scottish history but I watched a special once on the subject and the way the different clans would make their members and other clans aware of a pending battle or war was to burn crosses in the countryside. It was a call to arms.

The burning of a cross wasn't originated with the KKK anymore than the swastika was invented by the Nazis.

The first Klan groups may have started in the south, but since then other chapters have started all over the place - including New Jersey.


In case you included that second symbol in your post because you think it's a burning cross - it isn't. It's a cross and two tongued flame, which is the symbol of a particular denomination. (I took a class on world religions and their symbols in college and would hate for anyone to mistakenly believe that the symbol means something that it doesn't.)

I don't buy the pride argument at all. How can you be PROUD of losing a war fought because people wanted to own other people?! I'm southern, too. Now this is all personal anecdote of course, but in my life I've never met a person that wore/flew that flag that didn't come off as an ignorant redneck in public and a racist in private. I doubt I ever will.

If we can't stop those radical idiots that keep showing up at military funerals to be disrespectful and just downright mean, what makes people think they are going to stop a woman from flying a flag?

Get a grip. I suppose there was a huge boycott of Dukes of Hazard because their car had the Confederate flag painted on the hood? She is IN the south and wants to fly the Confederate flag, she can fly the flag if she wants to. Japanese flags still fly. German flags still fly. Italian flags still fly. We disintegrated how many Japanese citizens with a bomb and we still fly our flag. Let her fly the darn flag and ignore her if she's bothering you.

If you have a problem with her flying the flag because of what it "stood for" then take a good, long look around at what still flies and what they have stood for in the course of history as well.
