Sometimes this really ticks me off!

"go after the people that have been using their accountants and tax shelters to pay a fraction of what the rest of us has had to pay for the last eight years."

I can think of many senators, some from my own state, who are in this bracket. I hope Obama goes after them too.

This is a very touchy subject, I have no answers. I just wish everything was fair for everyone, but however, it is not. Life is not fair..

I'm not sure how things are in indivdual states. Here you have to work The only way you are able to stay home and not work if you have kids under. Even then one spouse has to work atleast 30 hours a week.

What I seen is the person with food stamps buy a $1.50 half gallon of milk, hand the cashier a $20.00 food stamp, she gives the person change who in turn buys the beer and cigarettes.

Isn't that called working the system?
There hasn't been money food stamps in about 20 years. They have debit cards now

Maybe these wives belong to a church that takes a dim view on abortion? It doesn't sound like there's health insurance being offered so maybe they can't afford b/c pills? If they're struggling to put food on the table and diapers on the babies, buying condoms seems like an luxury, doesn't it? Or, if they're Catholic, b/c is also a sin so their choices dwindle with every waking moment.

Or maybe the new rule is that anyone, even married people, shouldn't be having sex if they can't afford b/c, sterilization or children. That sounds more like it. We'd have more "I think my husband is cheating on me" threads here to entertain ourselves with.

(sorry in advance. I'll feel better soon)

Then they shouldn't be having sex. If they can't afford children and have all of those reasons not to have sex safely.

Birth control is free from 3 or 4 places within 15 minutes in this town.

OP, I hope your day is better today. It is tough not to feel resentful when you are working your butt off while others look for the easy way out.

It is tough not to feel resentful when you are working your butt off while others look for the easy way out.
I agree that it's tough not to feel resentful when we work our butts off while others take the easy way out.

But I find that counting my blessings help if/when I ever feel that way. By the time I get done with my list of everything I have to be thankful for, somehow that other person's life doesn't look quite so rosy.

:rotfl:

Why? Because I would actually expect somebody to be able to afford to feed a child that they chose to bring into this world? Or because I listed alternatives for people that choose to have baby after baby (after baby) and are unable to feed them without the help of the government?

I'm curious if you are including posters on these boards whose kids get free or reduced price school lunch? :confused3

ETA, my kids have never gotten that.

You seen that? Really? How long ago?

Would you be surprised to know that all states use EBT, not paper "stamps?"

I think you are fabricating a story.

When the states switched to EBT cards, the cheats had to step up their game. Now, they just go shopping with the person they are giving the "stamps" to.

Person A receives stamps. He heads to the grocery store with person B. persons A uses his EBT card to purchase $100.00 worth of items for B. When they leave the store B gives a $50.00 in cash.

Same scam as before only now it requires extra work.

I don't care if you are a single mom living in the projects or a married couple living in the burbs. If you can't afford to support your children without help from the government , then you need to stop having them.

If you can't afford 1 on your own, how the heck are you going to afford 2 or more?:confused3

More often then not people are taking advantage of the system. My brother in law's friend from school is proud to be getting section 8 housing and other goverment benefits. (trust me he bragged to everyone who would listen and even those who didn't want to listen) That way they have more money for their pill habit - yeah after he got caught with prescription pills not prescribed to him the only thing he was worried about was losing his section 8 - kind of messed up when they have 2 children that should be top priority. Then he goes out and gets cought dr shopping to get pills. People never learn and they still end up getting money from the government. If Obama wins these kinds of people will get even more money to do even more illegal things with. I feel bad for those individuals who are truly down on their luck and trying to work to get themselves out of the situation they are in. The bad ones truly ruin it for everyone.

Flame away!!!! I'm getting tired of having to fill out proof of income forms for employees to get food stamps, help w housing and free insurance for their kids. Yeah I'm in a pissy mood. These guys wives don't work come in here with a kid on their hip another one in the car and usually one on the way. I don't wish ill on these children I just get fed up with working full time and my DH works full time and he has a side business and I'm working a part-time job. I want to scream at these young women GET A JOB!!! STOP HAVING BABIES!!! I'd rather you get free/or reduced birth control than all this other crap your getting. My kids have insurance and it is costing my husband an arm and a leg. My employer covers me so he doesn't have that expense. I'm sorry but we're busting our butts off to make ends meet and too many people aren't doing their share. There I said it.

I understand your frustration. I am assuming that you fill out the forms honestly..so are you telling me that someone who works full time at your company qualifies for food stamps, housing subsidy, and free insurance from the state? I'm curious what kind of company is it, what kind of jobs the workers do, and what do they earn?

I'm curious if you are including posters on these boards whose kids get free or reduced price school lunch? :confused3

I'll bite. If you can't pay for your kid's lunch and have internet, cable, vacations, etc., you (not you specifically) are just another user. If you don't have time to make lunch, but have time to sit on your butt and Dis all day, you have screwed up priorities.

not true, one of my neighbors about 6 yrs ago was on food stamps 800.00 a month for 2 kids! she has the paper stamps...I had given her a ride to the store so I saw this with my own eyes..also she could have seen this happen with the wic checks and thought they were the food stamps...the wic checks are still paper.I am also tired of seeing people load up two buggies of steak and soda and drive away in a new suv with perfect nails and a coach purse while I am buying chicken and driving a mini van! It does get old...I also agree if you cant afford them do Not keep having babies!I would LOVE to have more kids but I know money would be tight so I do not do it.

KWYM. My aunt used to work for social services. It peeved her that people would come in with older relatives and apply for social services. These are people who never worked a day in their lives in the US. Yes their son/daughter might be working in the US and paying taxes and social security but they themselves never did. Their son/daughter agrees to "sponsor" them to come to the US--accepting full financial responsibility for them--and then BAM after they are here a little while they start asking for and usually receiving benefits.

Not Hentob, but I'll respond:flower3:

I think it depends.

There was thread on the budget board last spring about free/reduce lunch. The was a DVC member who posted that her children receive free or reduce lunch. There was another DISers (planning a trip to WDW:sad2: ) who said her children were in the program.

Sorry, but I believe if you can afford a trip to WDW and DVC, then you should be responsible for providing lunch for your child.

Just to clarify--my kids have never gotten free/reduced lunch!! Can I please keep Dis-ing?!! :lmao: ;)

:rotfl: That was why I clarified. People can choose what they want to do, but I don't understand the idea that it is ok to have others take care of yours, when you can.

When I was a kid (growing up in poor rural area) there were 2 or 3 kids that received the free lunches. Now, the same kids that are getting food stamps at home are being fed free lunches at school.

People think that someone owes them, rather than taking care of the their own. I see a lot of this as I work with high risk students.

Welfare had/has a purpose as a hand up. I know many honorable people who have hit hard times, and had to look towards these programs. It was never meant, nor do I think it should be just another money maker.

Lunches are not expensive to make. Especially if you don't put in junk. People have wants that they choose to fulfill before their needs. That is backwards.

You might be right, all I know is in my state they have been gone for since mid 80's

Friends brother has never worked a day in his life (legitimately at least).

He is in his mid 40's. Severly overweight. Collects disablilty etc. Needs leg surgery so he can walk better...caused by the fact he weighs 500lbs. State pays for gastric surgery. Loser drops about 80 lbs in 6 months. Can walk better, looks better etc. He then realizes that if he gets the joint surgery, the state may decide he should work and cut him off so he sabotages his diet, keeps gorging himself, gains some weight back, ends up getting sick and having the gastric surgery reversed all of which the taxpayers are forking over the $$ for.

He lives at home, sleeps about 14 hours a day but manages to go shopping, buys all sorts of crap at the Dollar Stores, deals drugs and is a loser. Now he wants to sue the drs because they "did a bad job with the surgery" according to him. :scared1:

Not only is he a serial welfare cheat, he is a serial lawsuit creep.

These are the people that make my blood boil. I agree with the OP. Sometimes I wonder why dh and I work so hard. People make terrible choices and expect everyone else to bail them out. DH and I have worked since we were 14 years old and never once taken a dime from anyone. There are a lot of things that I would love to have but being responsible, we either go without or defer for a while so we can actually afford them.

Off my soap box now. Some people really do know how to work the system and the system really needs to be overhauled.

According to the USDA website, you get $700 for a family of five. You can include children up to 22 in that figure:eek: 22 :scared: Please go to work and help your family :headache: That doesn’t include WIC, which is also given to the children five and under n the household.

Not true. You can buy anything with food stamps, except for prepared foods. So, you can go and buy steaks and soda and lobster. Many of us have witnessed this in our local grocery store.

Again, not true. Every doctor I know will accept Medicaid. They are guaranteed to get paid, as it comes from the government.

I think the programs are WONDERFUL for people who need a step up. The ones that have fallen on bad times:hug:

I think when you make a career out of the welfare system (like MANY generations do around these parts) it is beyond atrocious. I think people who are on welfare and have baby after baby should have to attend a meeting where it is explained to them that no more monies will be handed to them, as they are irresponsible leeches on our society:thumbsup2

according to the usda website the MAXIMUM family grant is $698 for a family of 5-that is not what a family of 5 receives. on average the monthly allocation is less than $100 per person. food stamps entails one of the most complex budgeting formulas and grants are based not just on household size, but consider income (all sources), housing costs (and free or subsidized reduces benefits), utility costs and a variety of other factors. it would be the rare exception of families of 5 that recived the max grant (i administered the program for over a decade an never encountered a household of 5 receive anywhere near that-generaly it was in the high 200 range).

wic is not just given to all families with children under a certain age-there is a medical requirement that doctors must verify which is submitted along with the income verification.

there is a lifetime limit to how much an adult can receive on "welfare" (cash assistance). subsequent children born into recipeint families are not automaticaly aided (maximum family grants were initiatiated several years ago under the welfare reform act). there are work requirements for all adults in aided households, and there is a school attendance requirement for their children (exceed the number of absences your district permits and see your benefits or that of your parent if it's a younger child get taken away).

you're fortunate to live in an area where there is apparantly a wealth of health professionals willing to take medicaid. it's not the case everywhere. in the region i live in, despite a wealth of medical providers, a medicaid or medicare participant can be on a waiting list for a minimum of 6 months to get one of the highly coveted slots individual doctors who do accept these programs allocate to their practice (the practice i use had a waiting list for 8 months in anticipation of a new doctor they were hiring who would open up a handful of additional slots within the practice for medicare patients-medicaid? even if you are one of the few they have within the practice, if you have a subsequent child you'll be looking for a new doctor because they've reached their cap on how many they will serve).

op-why are the employees asking you for a wage verification? they should have to present their wage stubbs for the past 3 months and in absence of that you would be sent a form that you could either fill out or attach a print out to. by providing these the eligibility staff can get a clear picture of what their real wages are including average overtime and any other compensation they receive.

Sorry, but I believe if you can afford a trip to WDW and DVC, then you should be responsible for providing lunch for your child.

Of course you should:thumbsup2

What kind of person would allow the government to feed their children even though they take luxury vacations? It is so wrong. No pride. No shame.

It happens EVERYDAY here on the DIS.

Hi. I can't afford to feed my children. My children that I chose to have. I can't pay bills. I can't pay for the doctor. Oh. But I can afford to buy DVC. I can afford to vacation. I can afford luxury items:headache:

I'm curious if you are including posters on these boards whose kids get free or reduced price school lunch? :confused3

Yes. If they can afford to vacation, they can afford to feed their children.
