Something About Nothing............ #14

January 1st once again!!

Slept late, weather is at least a little better so hopefully Kyle`s run this morning went well, there`s usually around 400 of them on a Saturday so the same folks turn up for the Christmas and New years runs too. Least it`s been dry and he did well and really enjoyed it.

We still have plenty of food and drinks available for drop ins today, had a couple already, couple of drinks, a few snacks and on to someone else, but not too many for dinner later, Tom is on cooking the steaks, I`m doing everything else, I`ve probably made too many sides, but they never go wrong.

As we had Eggs Royale for breakfast around 10am, we haven`t needed any food till we eat later, but snacking is allowed all day of course!! One of the Christmas presents Kyle got me was a lovely tea service, beautiful bone china teapot and accessories, so we had that with breakfast this morning, very elegant indeed.

I think we`re ready to get back to normal soon, back to healthier foods and hopefully walking again as soon as the weather improves.

Time for a quick cuppa....champagne later when others arrive!!!

Have a lovely New Years Day 🥂

Ah, that was quite the lightning and very loud thunder, and at times, heavy pouring rain, early last evening. But the neighbors did fireworks for about 20 minutes around midnight, in a no rain sky. Today, that rain is gone, and a good wind blowing. Like blowing by, seeing this guy:

IMG_4071.jpeg

Yep, the time of year, this year, we get two mid week holidays for a camel reminder.

Ah yes, that ever happy hump day, when a holiday one, where like today, many are lazy due to this welcoming the first day of a new year in our time keeping jargon in lazy mode. Like me. Woot!

But as all Wednesdays are, it’s a feel like a hump of a day to get over, to enjoy a fabulous Friday then only a day away. And be thirsty when you wake up tomorrow.

One kid is up, and wants to do a Target run. Most retail places around here, are open, including the local hospital, as that ambulance very loudly going down the main drag a block from our home was just heard.

Good morning all. Have a Most Wonderful Wednesday this first day of 2025.

Lo & behold, half of my previous attempts @ quotes decided to populate. Better than nothing

Have been baking for good portion of the day & my pulled pork is done, waiting to be sauced tomorrow; all in anticipation of the NYE festivities. Will get the pork roast going in the late AM to suitably brown the kraut by 6 pm. Then, the meat sauce needs to start simmering. House is going to smell divine :) :) :)

We enjoy having the family over and bit of an open house. At the point where pajamas vs sequins tend to be the favored dress

Has she tried support knee highs? I resisted them until I had the baker’s cyst issue a year ago. I kept being told I “had” to wear them & could go with the lower pressure ones that nurses and runners wear.

Going forward I was thunderstruck how comfortable they were when training for the 5K and then in the amusement parks & when flying or long drives.

Found some on amazon that are well-made, reasonably priced and, dare I say it; actually not that bad as in colors and different prints, etc.

I season my ricotta in the lasagna to make it more palatable. I also tend to do a thin layer and add some smoked mozzarella to it.

I have done cannolis & cheesecakes with it. came out good, long as tempered with cream cheese & lots of sugar lol

Woohoo to your running man!

Aw, glad it turned out as well as can be expected. Sounds as though it was cathartic, start to healing trip for all.

Can’t say I’ve seen that word used in ages, however, it surely sounds spot on in this instance. Good to hear things went so well.
Thanks!! She has done the same on Amazon, prints and plain support hose thigh high.

Happy New Years from Sunny Florida. Woke up too late for the Polar Plunge at the beach again, for like 40 years now. We did surf, scuba dive and kayak year round so it never had a real attraction.
Hope everyone's year is full of blessings, peace and love.

Happy 2025! I spent most of yesterday trying to get rid of a headache. I think it was a sinus headache. The evening was a quiet one spent at home. Today was an exciting trip to the grocery store.
I have nothing special planned this week. I have to go back to work tomorrow. Tuesday I can start making Disney reservations.

Is that similar to what happens all over the UK on beaches? On Boxing Day and New Years Day, many, many beaches offer a Dip....where hundreds of folks get into the sea regardless of the weather and usually in aid of charity. I gave money to my hairdresser, 2 godchildren and one friend who all do it in different areas. Good idea but too darn cold for me to even consider it!!!!

Hope the headache is better, yes they can be really miserable. Quiet nights at home are quite nice after a busy festive season we find.

Hope work passes quickly today.

Famous last words that we won`t have too many folks visiting today!!!!

We had a few pop in, then we had a lovely New Year`s Day dinner with Kyle, steaks were very nice indeed and seems I didn`t make too many sides, they were all gone, so I was glad I had made them all.

Kyle went home as he was going to see friends, then we had more folks than expected, but nice all the same and the last one left just before midnight which wasn`t too bad and I think most of the food was eaten too which again I`m glad about as it would have been thrown out today if it was still there. Tom did all the clearing up last night before he came to bed which is his thing, we both hate coming down in the morning to any dishes from the day before, so just had to pop the kettle on this morning and make my first pot of tea for the day.

But, doing Dry January again, we have Kyle`s birthday this month and another friends birthday and a special one for her!!!! But, will try!!

Usual breakfast for me, it`s going to be a very cold few days ahead so I think some nice winter warming dishes ahead, lunch will be home made turkey noodle soup, our turkey made the most beautiful stock and rosemary/garlic bread and dinner will be chicken casserole with lots of garlic and rosemary with some parmentier potatoes and some very healthy veg!!!

Won`t be going out today, all the decorations and trees have to come down, our gardener is doing the outdoor ones but will take us most of the day. We usually have wine or sparkly putting them all up.....tea will be on offer taking them all down, not the same when they`re all coming down!

But, Happy Thursday and time to start getting back to normality after a lovely Festive Season!!!

Finally getting around to posting!!!! It's been a hot minute. It's been a busy holiday season.

I'm finally feeling better, but it took me long enough. All that is left is a nasty cough/bark. That seems to come and go at different times of the day.

Christmas was great! It was 2 days of games, food and laughter. I didn't take any extra time off this year - so it's been working all these odd days here and there.

Our weather was amazingly mild over Xmas. We are now back in the deep freeze for a few days again. I pulled out the new coat dh got me for Christmas - and that sucker is amazing! I don't feel the least bit of cold in it. So that's a win - when I'm having to get my butt to work and I don't want to leave my nice warm house and go out into the cold.

New Years Eve, we had our gd. It was her first official sleepover since they moved here. We had a fun evening of movies, teasing grandpa and playing little games. She even let us sleep in yesterday!!!! I consider it a win! Grammie slept with her in the spare room, as I didn't want her to wake up and be scared not knowing where she was. She didn't even wake up during the night. she slept straight through.

It was a quieter day yesterday. I whipped up a couple loaves of bread using the new bread pans I got. I also made a tomato/red pepper bisque for our BYOB (Bring your own bowl) lunch. It was my turn to bring something for lunch. So a nice creamy tomato bisque with cheddar cheese biscuits will help people warm up over lunch today.

Even though Nov and Dec came through in the blink of an eye, I'm glad the holiday season is now over. Now I'm on the countdown until winter is done. We are hoping to pick and book our winter vacation soon. We talked to brother-in-law last night. The dates are their ballcourt as they have some things happening that they need to attend before they head away for a week long frolic in warmer weather.

@disneyseniors Ruth  I am sending you many hugs.

wait….janet that does make sense but with my family members gone, l am the last of the family that is alive.
All blood members I had, are deceased now.
It’s just me and Mr Mac and the 4 sons
Being the youngest and only sibling left is hard! Both my parents will be that person. Sending you many tight hugs too
one is 4 months old and the other is 6 months
Awwwwww Such fun ages!!!!!!
It has only been 6 weeks since my brother in law passed away, but we knew how much he loved Christmas and loved us all getting together for that time, so we did him proud.
 tight hugs to all of you as well. It is never easy celebrating the holidays when a loved one is gone.

I found the "2nds" were harder than the " 1sts ". After dh's mom passed away VERY unexpectedly and at young age - that first year we were all kind of in a fog and went through the motions of celebrating holidays and things, but the 2nd year was incredibly hard.
Dh is still processing everything, but happy to have some information on his biological family.
It is great to hear it went well - and the family is accepting of your dh coming into the family. I can not even fathom the feelings he is experiencing.

I have a gf who has a VERY similar story. She has reconnected with both her birth parents - and regularly goes to visit her sisters in another province and vice versa. she has talked about her feelings and how she processed it. Not only her - but her daughters as well.
I season my ricotta in the lasagna to make it more palatable. I also tend to do a thin layer and add some smoked mozzarella to it.
i do as well! The smoked mozza sounds 👩‍🍳 delicious!!!!!! I love a good lasagna....now I want to whip one up for this weekend!
Hello,
I thought that it would be more efficient to intrude on this active thread for a referral question than starting a new one.
:wave2: I have found a few youtubers that helped me plan our most recent trip. Rixflix is great, The Park Podigy, and Molly with Mammoth club are all great to tips and tricks.

Well, I should get going, and get some work done.

Have a great day everyone!!!!!

Hi Pumpkin, Thanks for the references. I stumbled upon The Park Prodigy (I tried to ignore the Yankees hat!) and will look at the others. We are no longer commandos, but I want to minimize the standing, wandering, and phone staring.

Chicken wings will be oven baked today in time for the game, not sure which kiddos, if any, will stop by as a work day for two of them. Reminds me to check before I make too many. Lots of leftovers still from NYE & NY despite sending it home with family. Even sent care package to my ex MiL. Going to freeze up some packages today for rainy day/alternative menu choices
Woke up too late for the Polar Plunge at the beach again
Darn it, me too, missed the annual one in the river. How people don’t get hypothermia is beyond me as our water temp is currently 39 degrees

My ‘lil did a 5K yesterday am, barely in the teens…1st place woohoo. Was supposed to do a big indoor invitational @ university 1/2 hour from Lake Erie. They cancelled as a foot of snow dumped down in the snow belt. We only have a couple of inches, a bit more tonight. No biggie, it’s the nice friendly, fluffy stuff.

This blast of cold air has the mr & I doing some serious travel tweaking & new planning as the perfect nose thumb to winter lol
doing Dry January again
So many I know doing it this year, good for you! Just watched an old twilight zone episode that featured the song “how dry I am” as part of plot line

One of the best parts of being a grandparent :)
I whipped up a couple loaves of bread using the new bread pans I got.
Isn’t it nice when new stuff performs as expected? I made my carrot cake in two of them, freezing one. Think I’ll make it that way going forward.

I’m still waiting for my all clad set I ordered on Black Friday. starting to get nervous. Called once and they said backed up over a month. Wah Will give a holler end of next week I suppose.
that first year we were all kind of in a fog and went through the motions of celebrating holidays and things, but the 2nd year was incredibly hard.
Yes, had same experience. Every year, even close to four decades for my Dad, I still have a hurt in my heart. Thankfully, the good memories far outweigh the sadness

Thirsty I am. Kids picked me up iced coffee, and drank a little bit of it and then gave it to DH. I didn’t really like it. But DH drinks any kind of coffee hot or iced, so he drank the rest of it.

Of the large office I’m in, only 5 of us are in. I actually don’t mind week day routine this week. It’s been mostly very quiet, given many are still on holiday leave, as use or loose is good until two Fridays from tomorrow, as end of the 2024 pay schedule that has 26 pay Fridays. Sometimes it ends more into January than most of the time, very early January.

Glad it’s Friday tomorrow. Shortest day, double large lunchtime break, and pay day too. Woot!

Yay for Charade, as glad headache gone, and making your selections soon. Good luck with getting the times and places you want.

Pumpkin, so nice to have GD time. And still sending some mummy dust well wishes to you, as glad to hear at least feeling better today. And good luck with that late Winter trip planning. Don’t blame ya, with the Gulf Stream dipping so low, giving us that Arctic air starting Saturday.

Weather. We are to get around 3 inches of snow next week, with a clipper from the North that is also bringing us that frigid cold air. 25 the high predicted next Thursday. When it’s 38 this Thursday.

Kids are watching a ball game this weekend, and with the high temp so near freezing that day, they will be bundled up. And they can bring blankets into the outdoor stadium.

Ack, time of year, can complain of the cold. But hey, Spring is only 77 days away. Woot!

Good Afternoon all. This 2nd day of 2025.

Welcome back Pumpkin....glad you had such a lovely festive season and spending time with your GD must have been so lovely. But, hope your cough disappears soon, it is miserable having that.

Yes, I did wonder that the first Christmas was very close to his passing, my sisters birthday is this month so that`s another first out of the way relatively quickly. It`s tough for sure.

Good luck with choosing your next vacation, always fun!!!

What happened in NO was truly awful, it was quite surreal and so horrific to see it all unfold.

I like the friendly fluffy snow, slushy icy stuff, not so much!! Your GD did amazingly well, she is a future star, amazing runner already!

You lost me at carrot cake lol

Yes, the memories should outweigh the sadness.

Seems some folks are back to work today, some I thought that said they were off till next Monday, I must have misunderstood, most folks we know don`t go back till Monday. I`m back to volunteering next week in school, Tuesday, but got a call today from one of the teachers, I was surprised she was at work.

Busy, busy day....managed to get every tree down, all the decorations removed, carefully wrapped and put away in boxes till next time. Took forever, but we did it, Kyle came over to help too which was nice and the gardener and Tom removed all the outdoor stuff. And not one bauble or decoration got broken or damaged again, glad to say.

Baltic outside, glad I`ve been hibernating in here all day, lots of tea and treats for the helpers, our gardener can drink his body weight in tea, he has his own huge mug we keep here for him and refill it often, especially in this cold weather.

Grocery shopping in the morning, friend coming in the afternoon for a good old chin wag and tea then hunker down in case we do get snow.....I`m ready for summer already!!

Almost bedtime here, feel like an early night, this day has just vanished!!

Good morning, I`m sure it`s Friday, but feels like a Tuesday somehow! Maybe next week when everyone is back at work it`ll feel a little more normal.

Went out very early this morning and went to a few places for groceries hopefully got everything we need for the next few days, it`s going to be cold and maybe snow, so will hibernate for a couple of days.

We did walk a little in the woods behind us, it was gorgeous but very cold. My phone is playing up today too, for some reason all my pictures were refiled by an update, going to have to reorganise them again! Technology.

i-HbKbDNP-S.jpg

So, back home and warmed up early lunch as Tom is out volunteering this afternoon, I have a friend coming round for a cuppa and a chat, look forward to that as always. And maybe not too many goodies as we are both trying to be good, we can but try!!!

The other half of the chicken casserole for dinner tonight, some lovely fresh veg to go with it, but first a winter warming butternut squash soup made with home made chicken stock, gorgeous!!! Last of the soups, so will need to get the big cauldron out next week to make some more batches of soup for us for the next month.

But, beautiful, sunny and crisp winter`s day here, it is lovely seeing the sun, despite being below zero!!

Have a lovely Friday and weekend 😊

Good morning everyone. I am the only one awake right now. Unusually busy day at work yesterday. I ended up staying an hour and a half longer than usual and still left unfinished work.

Wednesday I sort of locked myself out of the house. Dh and I were bringing in groceries. I went to take something to the neighbors and asked dh to close the garage door to keep the cat from getting out. When I went back home the keypad for the garage wouldn’t work. I didn’t have my phone or keys with me, so I had to ring the doorbell to get dh to let me back in. He went to change the battery in the keypad and discovered that the battery terminal was disintegrating. (We haven’t replaced the battery in the 8 years we’ve lived here.) He went to Loew’s yesterday and we now have a brand new keypad that will be installed today.

Is that similar to what happens all over the UK on beaches? That would be a huge no for me. A combination of 2 of my least favorite things - cold and water.

I'm finally feeling better, but it took me long enough. All that is left is a nasty cough/bark. That seems to come and go at different times of the day.
Glad you are feeling better. Hope the cough goes away soon.

Chicken wings will be oven baked today in time for the game,
Do you have a team you are rooting for? Dh has been watching all of the playoffs games but doesn’t have a dog in the fight.

Yay for Charade, as glad headache gone, and making your selections soon. Good luck with getting the times and places you want.
Thanks. I’m only making a few selections this time. I’m scheduling one tour, one special event, and only one ADR.

Weather. We are to get around 3 inches of snow next week, with a clipper from the North that is also bringing us that frigid cold air. 25 the high predicted next Thursday. When it’s 38 this Thursday.
We are expecting snow and ice Sunday and Monday. B is very happy that she doesn’t have to work Saturday and Sunday.

I am still the only one awake. Sometime later today I think we are going to start taking the Christmas decorations down.

TGIF :cheer2: I am ready for the weekend!!! I kept hitting the snooze button this morning and dozing off.

I don't think there will be sleeping in tomorrow. I need to see about my cell phone. My plan is almost done - and with work, I get an awesome deal on a new one. So going to take advantage of that. Then dh put a deposit on a new mattress. So I want to try it out before we make the final payment on it. We loved our current one. This is the " replacement" of the one we currently have. So that will be my Saturday. Sunday will have some grocery shopping, tidying the house and maybe a little baking if I have the energy.

Quiet night last night. Whipped up some supper, then sat in my chair and didn't really move. It cold right now - and I feel like an old lady. My hip and knee were killing me last night. It was a night of sitting with the heating pad on and huddled under a blanket.

I am not sure what is on the agenda tonight - but it probably won't be much with the cold weather that is here right now.
.I`m ready for summer already!!
I hear you....I'm ready for spring /summer to come now. My body is NOT liking the weather this year. Everything aches.
Sounds like you have a great day planned. A little busy, but nothing pressing, and
I had to ring the doorbell to get dh to let me back in
It's good you were not locked out!!!! Getting 8 years out of it is amazing!!!!!! I hope you don't get too much snow.

Well...off to get some tasks done.

Have a great day everyone:wave2:

Glad you`re sorted, and yes that is a good battery life!!

Yep, me too, no col and no water but put them together and it`s even worse. I have two younger family members, well, one is a Godchild, but they`re both life guards part time, in pools and in the summer they do beaches too, not for me.

How is your daughter enjoying her work? Is she planning to stay put now?

Have a nice weekend with your daughter, taking all the Christmas stuff down is never fun.

Charade, 8 years before you need to replace the battery is great!

Ain`t that the truth!!

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday, hope the mattress is comfy, a wonderful mattress is one of life`s essentials.

Yes, it`s baltic here, but hopefully rain now on Sunday, we are in the minuses and it feels like it out there. Aches and pains are no fun!

Had a lovely afternoon with my friend J, we talked our heads off and had a nice little afternoon tea, not too much as she and her husband were going out for dinner, but nice all the same, I brought out my new tea set which is so pretty. We also decided to go to Salsa dance classes next week, it starts back up on Wednesday night, no dance experience necessary, thank goodness I have two left feet and so does J. We heard it was a very friendly class for beginners. I doubt the husbands will join us, can`t see it somehow.

Then Kyle surprised us and appeared, so we enjoyed dinner with him tonight which was lovely. He was in 2 hours and the car was pure white with frost when he left, it is cold!!

Plan to stay in tomorrow, lazy day watching tv and not much else.

TV and pineapple/cranberry juice with fizzy lemonade tonight for us.

Retired or not, still love that Friday night feeling 😊

Mr Mac went out for a walk and asked me to join him.

Told him I would take a pass as it’s too darn cold for me outside today.

When I lived in Chicago, weather would be bitter cold this time of year.
We would take walks all the time being bundled up and got used to it.

Times have changed for me since I moved south some years back.

I need it to be warmer than 50 before I do walks in the battlefield area near our house.

Watching game shows on tv to pass the time.
It’s something I haven’t done in years.

snow plow down the street almost a doz times already Mostly throwing salt. They pretreated most of last night. something to be said for having two councilmen as neighbors lol

spent most of day updating various medical related websites with new insurance info. I'm a good patient lol, even upload pics of the insurance cards Know the gals have enough to do beginning of each year verifying new coverage. Oddly, the pharmacy apps i use don't have that capability

picked out the sail date for my 'xmas present', in DCL treasure...in April...of 2026 :faint: Seems so far away, now to find a TA who will give a bit of love with an OBC.

did request quote from the site's sponsor, Dreams Unlimited Can't say I know anyone who has used them

We haven’t replaced the battery in the 8 years we’ve lived here.
i have started to worry about the batteries in two of our exterior lock sets Reminds me to ask the mr to change them once it warms up a bit
Do you have a team you are rooting for?
I think it's a law that Catholics are compelled to root for Notre Dame 🥴

the mr is a die-hard Penn state fan, even when so many shunned them during the scandal

will be an interesting game in my house

how about you? know not your home team, have a favorite?
Thanks. I’m only making a few selections this time. I’m scheduling one tour, one special event, and only one ADR.
curious minds need to know :)

i just renewed my AP today Need to make park res starting 2/1 Probably eat most meals offsite this time, have a ton of various GC I should use
My plan is almost done - and with work, I get an awesome deal on a new one. So going to take advantage of that
that's awesome It's so much fun to have a nice, new phone
We loved our current one.
ours died early on during covid We settled for one of those compressed foam hybrid ones, pricier than I had expected but, less than traditional sort

figured we'd use for a few years and replace It's still as comfy as day one shocked
We also decided to go to Salsa dance classes next week,
oh, that sounds like fun salsa looks tricky to me, classes sound like a good idea
Then Kyle surprised us and appeared, so we enjoyed dinner with him tonight which was lovely.
nice, youngest DS stopped unexpectedly too Brightens up the day
Told him I would take a pass as it’s too darn cold for me outside today.
i actually like walking when it's in 40's & 50's as long as wind isn't blowing

First it was 2-4 inches, now saying 4 to 6 inches starting in the wee hours of Monday morning. Joy. Not. But snow shovels are at the front of our garage, ready for that Monday dig out.

Went out very late afternoon, and snow showers left snow on grassy areas, and saw more than a few salt trucks in our errand runs. One of the items we picked up was windshield wiper fluid. Time of year, if you are not the lead dog on the road, you get that brine filled slush splash on your windshield. Hence, refill that fluid at least once a winter.

Eh, DH went to bed over two hours ago. With the alarm turned off, I’m more of a night owl. Kids will be in bed way after me though.

Friday night with a throw and the big tv. Yay.

And woot!

🖐️ Me!

Hope all have a good night, and have a wonderful weekend. The first one in January.

Ooh took a look outside. Clear sky, and Orion shooting his arrow seen. Seems like this time of the year, best to see that constellation.
