We went out to dinner to celebrate my new job. I wanted to order a drink. The server was a bit pushy and obviously in a hurry. I told him I needed a minute to look over the drink menu, he huffed a little. He ran off and came back with a drink that he said he knew I would love. I never ordered it, I told him no thank you (I dont drink tequila) and told him what I wanted. He left his drink suggestion on the table, but did go get what I ordered. I told him we didnt want the suggested drink & he could take it away. He just left it and said not to worry about it. It sat there for the whole meal, untouched.

Anyway when the bill arrived we were charged 12 bucks for his suggested drink, which was still sitting on the table. I called him over & thought it was a mistake since we obviously didnt order or drink it. He said drinks were not returnable and he could NOT take it off. He said it is not his fault I didnt drink it, and someone had to pay for it.This really ticked me off, since I didnt order it and didnt want it. I asked to speak to the manager. We waited over 20 minutes and the server came back and told us the manager was too busy. At this point I was getting more angry.

I went to the hostess & asked for the manager. The manager came right over, advised he was not asked to come see us by our server. I showed him the full drink and explained what had happened. He took it off the bill and apologized for the mix up. He didnt really seem to care all that much.

Now here is the debate. I did not leave a tip. My other half thought I should have left something. I was so angry I didnt even want to pay for dinner, but obviously I did.

First time I have ever not tipped in my life. Would you have tipped this little twerp?

No. He was obviously rude. I know he needs to make a living, but not when he's doing something that's obviously wrong. I'm betting this little debacle did NOT win him points with the manager either.

Nope. I am with you. Let the little twerp learn his lesson.

there is NO WAY I would have left a tip. I used to be a server, and I understand things get busy. I understand it is not the server's fault if there is bad food. I always tip well. That being said...this guy seemed like a jerk, who clearly wasn't doing his job, and I would have not left anything either.

Wow! I would not have left a tip either. Also, if that restaurant was part of a chain, I would write to their corporate office and fill them in on your experience. That is awful!

Congrats on the new job though! :thumbsup2

It's really rare that I don't leace a tip, but in this case. . .NO! Well, I might have left him a penny, :) which I've been told is even more insulting...

Don't feel bad. I don't tip for poor service or rudeness. I know the difference when they're busy and really trying to get to you as much as possible and when they're just being lazy and unenthusiastic. Him huffing and bringing you something you didn't ask for then refusing to take it off the bill is grounds for no tip. What if it were food and you were allergic to it? Not cool at all.

You did the RIGHT thing by not leaving a tip! What a moron that guy was! If I were you, I would never eat at that restaurant again.

you were right. A tip is based on the servers attitude and he had a bad one. The drink should have been gone and never on the bill. I wouldn't have left anything either. I also would have let the manager know that I was unsure that I would be coming back if I had servers like that.

Wow, you were right! I was a server in college, and it take a lot to make me downsize my tip, but I wouldn't have left one in that case!

Wow, I totally agree, I would not have left a tip! I would make sure the manager knew I was not leaving a tip, and fully explain why, including the fact that he did NOT get the manager as you asked him to do.

I would not have tipped.

I would not have left a tip in this situation.

Wow! That server had a lot of nerve! He would NOT have received a tip from me either. Not only did he bring you something you didn't order, he refused to remove it, then charged you for it, then lied about trying to get a manager...what a jerk!

Now why in the world would you write to corporate? All you would do is get the manager in trouble, who actually took care of it as soon as they knew about it. What more do you want them to do? The server never told the manager. they can't solve a problem unless they know there is one.

And we don't know what the manager did or didn't do to the server, they may have disciplined them for the incident already.

I would have given a penny to the Manager to give to the server......

I hate rude servers. He may have had a large party which he knew that he would get a large tip (dislike that rule as well of set tip for larger parties but I can understand it).

Wow, what a jerk. You were right not to tip, he was way out of line charging you for a drink you did not order, then ignoring your request to see a manager. In fact, he was wrong to even bring you the drink, he doesn't know you, who is he to decide what you would or would not like?
I do, however, agree with the poster who suggested you should have left a penny. It would have sent a clear message to this jerk... and had you charged your bill and tip, management would have seen the clear message sent that the server is rude.
